International travel with babies?

Planning on flying from the US to South East Asia with a 3 year old and a year old. Sigh.... what can I do to make this trip easier? It'll be Washington DC - NY - Frankfurt - Singapore - Surabaya, Indonesia with SQ (Singapore Airlines). Has anyone made a similar trip? How do you handle the babies?
Thanks in advance.

Answer
I had to do a lot of plane hopping with my little ones when I flew to Ireland (four planes to get there, five planes to get home). They were a bit older - but we also take frequent trips, and have been flying with the kids since they were infants.

I disagree with the other commenter. I never check my luggage. When jumping that many planes, there is a greater chance the airline will "lose" your bags. It is also a pain to wait for the luggage to come around when you have little ones who may be cranky or overstimulated. But if you are traveling alone, then checking it may be your best option, as you won't have to struggle with kids and bags through the airport. Just makes sure you pack a backpack or small carryon bag with extra clothes (at least one set for every person traveling) and any and ALL important supplies - diapers, medication, money, passports... Keep that with you, so if your luggage is lost, you are not stuck with nothing.

For the baby, make sure you have a pacifier or bottle, or something they can suck on while the plane is ascending or descending. The air pressure can hurt their ears, and the sucking will cause that pressure to pop. Some suckers might also be good, if the older child complains about the pressure.

Bring snack foods - granola bars, fruit, crackers... And a water bottle. Fill the water bottle before you get on the plane. But be careful not to let the kids eat and eat and eat out of boredom. There is nothing worse than a kid barfing on a plane.

Bring activities and toys - but nothing noisy that will disturb other flyers or make a mess (it's not easy cleaning up a tiny space with babies in the way). Coloring books and crayons for the older child. If your youngest is going to be a lap baby, then be prepared for another passenger being seated with you. If possible, try to keep the aisle seat, so you can get your kids to the bathroom without having to inconvenience anyone else.

Oh, and try not to stress out if your kids do get cranky and make a fuss. I can't recall any flights I have ever been on that there wasn't a baby crying or a child whining. It happens, and most people will be understanding. Those who aren't, well, ignore them. Just concentrate on your children.

Q. LOL i have a stupid question but im sure some of you moms have a solution so. Well since im still a teenager im still in school. But i also have a baby. So i go to a school for teen-parents. Anywho my question is how am i going to be able to carry my purse,diaper-bag, backpack & of course my daughter. Like i have my backpack for school, diaper bag for my girl, purse for my stuff & then of course my baby how can i carry all of this stuff ( well my daughters a human not stuff :)). Do you think i should put my stuff in my daughters diaper-bag? I know this is a stupid question but i just cant figure it out ( im really tired lol) Does anybody have a solution? Thanks :)
I already have a stroller :)

Answer
Put your purse in your backpack that will help with one bag. Is there a spot in the care center that you can leave some extra baby items so you don't have to carry them everyday? I know most day cares have a special cubby for each child that they keep their extra stuff in maybe your school with have something similar. Or If you have a locker there you can leave some extra baby items there.

What do I need to pack in my babies diaper bag?

zackncats

I am having a baby girl and I need to know what to pack in her diaper bag.

Answer
The other people gave a good list of items. One lifesaver for me was a container with small disposable bags for when a poop happens at a friends house.

Advice: Make an emergency bag and throw it in the trunk of your car. I filled up a backpack with water, individual formula packets, a couple bottles, diapers, wipes, a roll of paper towels (trust me, it comes in handy) extra clothes, sunscreen, snacks, ect. Unless you have a diaper bag the size of a shopping cart, you just can't carry everything around. My advice, take a small diaper bag with just the essentials and have the other bag for backup. Afterall, you will forget things from time to time.

What is the best double stroller out there?

What is the best double stroller out of these options::::

Phil & Teds
Baby Jogger City Select Double
Kolcraft Contours
Graco DuoGlider

Any reviews?

Answer
Most definitely the Baby Jogger City Select! I have one myself and I love it for several reasons

1. Can be used as double, or single when one gets too big for it (and then back again if you have another!
2. the option of the bassinet casing for a seat, which later converts back, also love the carseat adapters... very easy to use and remove.
3. Super easy to fold up, and fold FLAT. All in one simple motion
4. Lots of storage options. The storage area underneath expands, and the handlebars have lots of accessory options, including full size backpacks. And, they don't tip even when you have a lot of weight on the handle bars.
5. Very maneuverable. I live in Boston with legendarily uneven sidewalks. I can get around just fine, and without too much bouncing.
6. Accessories: a self leveling drink holder (you have no idea how great that is on hilly roads). Storage cover- compact enough to use as carry-on on international flights. Belly bar- instead of food tray (also available) the belly bar gives something for kids to grab onto and allows them to lean out more. This was perfect for the zoo and watching the duckies go by.
7. Adorable! It does not look like any other stroller out there, yet has a nearly old world charm in the dark colors (I got black). I get questions all the time on it.
8. great if you baby wear- I wore my infant in a wrap while pushing my twins in the stroller. The handlebar was just the right height for me not to struggle.

Downsides? Can be costly to get new accessories, not the best 'jogger' but will do ok, not usually on sale.

tell me what the first 3 months of twins is like?

Who am I?

Can someone truthfully tell me what the first 3 months of twins is like? And the first year? Is it crazy and insane always? When do you (and when do they!) settle into the routine? Do you always feel stressed and like there is not enough of you to go around? What about if there is an older sibling to care for as well? Details details, please!!! :-)
And also, at what point can you go out and about and not feel like the effort of packing strollers and diaper bags is not worth the errand?

Answer
Well. my b/g twins will be 3 months next week and it hasn't been to terrible. The first 6-7 weeks were like I was in a fog! Sleep deprivation is a terrible thing! They were eating every hour and one was ALWAYS awake! I took to feeding them in bed with me just so I could grab a few minutes of sleep before the other woke up! About the two month mark they started sleeping about 4 hrs a night and I felt like a new woman! Now they have regulated to where they are mostly awake at the same time though they do have slightly different day time nap schedules and sleep at night at the same time. :)! I have a daughter that is 17 and she and my husband are a big help! All the kids tend to rotate so everyone gets special mommy time. My twins are funny how they do it! One will wake up from their nap about 1/2 hour before the other and my daughter gets me all to herself after my husband has left for work and the twins are down for the night. When we run an errend we just keep them in their car seats. The seats fit right into shopping carts and if we go to the mall we don't take a stroller (even though we leave one in the van) we just strap them into snuggies for our walk. We don't take a big diaper bag with us if we are just running around town-we have a couple of bags that look like backpacks and we just have a few diapers and wipes in them-just enough for a quick change as needed. If we go out of town then we take one of the big bags that have a couple of clothing changes and the med kits and such. As we haven't gotten though the 1st year yet I can't answer that but I hope it stays kinda like it is now! Its so much fun! Our new favorite game is "pass the baby". You get extra points if you can pass a baby with a "special" surprise and make a clean getaway!

What should I bring when travelling with my baby?

Gal in red

My baby will be five months old when I travel and I will be out of the conuntry for a month. What should I bring with me?

Answer
Hopefully you are nursing. Then you don't have to deal with worrying about water quality or hauling formula.

If you us formula- use POWDER...and only bottled water....and insist the bottles be brought to you UNOPENED so you can see the seal....then you know they weren't refilled.

Bring orajel and baby tylenol...and any over the counter medication you use for baby. You don't want to need to rely on meds in another language.

Carry diapers for a week and wipes. Don't drag a months worth. Every country has diapers. Lay in your stock as soon as you get there. Put the wipes in a ziploc bag- less space.

Disposable bibs.

Only 2-3 SIMPLE toys.

Car seat. This can double as a "highchair." I've even hauled car seats into movie theaters. The weight holds the seat down, and my kids were always happy to sit in their carseat if they were watching a movie.

Umbrella stroller and a baby backpack. Backpacks are easier than slings when they are that age- and when you have luggage.

Baby will be on cereal by then....depending on where you are going, you should be able to get dry cereals. Again....watch the water!

A blanket or toy baby associates with their bed. this will make the sleeping arrangements seem more homey.

If you will be travelling across more than 1 time zone...start adjusting baby to the new schedule 2 days for every time zone you are crossing (30 minutes a day)...so your travel day is the second to last day of adjustment......don't forget to reverse it on your way back.....it's good for you, too----you won't lose time to jet lag.

Keep with you on travel days.....a bag with EVERYTHING baby would need for 3 days...and then a few more diapers. When our 3rd was a month old, my husband and I tok her across the country with us on a business trip....and rest trip for me. She nursed, so no problem there....but the airline LOST the bag with her "gear." I was so glad I had 3 days supplies for her....it took that long to get her bag back!

You find bits of hay in your shoes...
your diary has i luv ___ (ur horses name)
your gloves smell of horses
you dream horses
your bedroom is full of rosettes
you dont mind getting up at 6am to muck him out
your bookmark is a pic of you and your horse
your horse always comes first
you will get up at 5am to bath your horse before a show
you tack clean on your kitchen table
you keep that bit of tail that you cut

this is just a bit of fun, does anyone else have any other comments or suggestions?

Answer
WHEN YOU TWO-POINT SPEED BUMPS WHILE ON THE ROAD!!!
--I've done this all my life and started the trend at my stables when we all go out to lunch...I yell "two-point" then we all two-point, including crest release, then count "strides" to the next speed bump

When you walk into a grocery store, and a random old man sniffs the air and says "Wooo-Wee! Smells like a horse here!" and you quietly sneak away to the next aisle.

When you're usually dressed in breeches, a polo, and tall boots when eating in a restaurant or seeing a movie.

When you have to be DRAGGED (literally) to your Hawaiian vacation by your family.

When you think your parents are serious when they ask "Why don't you just spend the night at the barn"?

When you use your horse's pulled mane hair as a prop for drama.

When you whinny to your horse as a greeting (I've taught myself how to, and horses sometimes respond!).

When you and your friends make a horsey rap
(for example: whinny nicker nicker snort, whinny nicker nicker snort....makes a great game when on a long drive in the car...little did we know, our instructor and the other cars were listening on the opposite end of the walkie-talkies)

When someone says "...horse" and you scream "WHERE!!!!" and just about jump out of the moving vehicle.

When you go to Seaworld to see the clydesdales.

When you're on a tour of a castle, see some horses, and never get to the castle because you're too busy taking pics of the horses on the trail leading to it.

When you're main concern when choosing a vacation location is how close are the nearest stables.

When you keep an extra set of clothes at the barn in case you're staying at a friend's place closer to the stables.

When half your wardrobe is breeches and polo shirts.

When your HORSE has more designer clothes than you.

When you refer to your horse as your "boy/baby" around non-horsey people, and they look at you with "isn't she a little too young" written on their foreheads.

When you'll make a birthday poster, throw a party, and make a cake for your horse, but you just go to the barn as usual for your 16th birthday.

When you can usually say your horses age before you can remember your own.

When you want a Eskadrons and a saddle for your sweet sixteen instead of a car.

When you read your horse a bedtime story.

When you take a lock of horsehair you found caught in a fence as a souvenir (shampoo it, rinse it, braid it into a pretty souvenir)

When you fall off a horse into a bank full of water and get stepped on and jump up saying "I LOVE CROSS-COUNTRY!!!"

When you pass out yourself because you were too busy brushing/refilling the buckets of your horse to get yourself a drink of water (been there...a few times)

When your sixteen years old and still watch the Saddle Club.

When you have accounts on all sorts of horse websites, but don't have a myspace

When your AIM username is your horse's name

When, instead of a pic of your boyfriend in your wallet/on your binder, you have a collage of your horse.

When you still play human hunters, at sixteen years old.

When you use a little bit of alfalfa as a bookmark in your schoolbook.

When your backpack usually contains horse magazines and your riding jacket.

When you go to school in a jacket covered with dust and horsehair, and wonder what the smell is that people around you are complaining about.

when your school friends say, "I like horses, but they smell!" And you reply "but that's one of the best parts!!!"

When your friends have french manicures while you have dirt shoved under your nails and calluses from holding reins and lunge lines.

When each stable-related scar you have is a treasure:
(this is where Danny bit me when he was little, this is from when I was breaking in my tall boots, this is from when my toe got stepped on so hard that it bled)

When your first thought when tripping or falling over something is "heels down! Shoulders back! GRAB MANE!!!"

When you wear Paddock boots with your homecoming dress...

***I can go on and on, and these are all things that I've done/do!!!!***

What's the one must have baby item for new parents?

baby backpack carrier what age
on ... Baby Carrier Top Baby Infant Sling Toddler wrap Rider Grey Canvas Baby
baby backpack carrier what age image

verdict

My wife and I are having a baby boy in April and I wanted to know what is your opinion of the must have baby gear/item for new parents. I'm not talking about a crib, or a bottle or things like that, I want something that new parents wouldn't think of.

Answer
so I'll list my favorites in order of recommendation:

A baby sling - assuming this is your first child (or even if it's not), you'll probably go through at least a short stage of wanting to have your baby constantly with you. A baby sling is the perfect solution. You can hold your baby right next to you, be completely comfortable, and still have both hands free. The other great use for a sling is if your wife wants to breastfeed. I was able to nurse my daughter in a sling while sitting or standing, and my version actually had a cloth attachment that maintained my privacy during (while I personally have no problems with women nursing in public, some places do - and not all nursing moms are comfortable exposing themselves). My best advice if you get a sling is to go somewhere that you can actually try them on. While some brands are more reputable than others, this is definitely something you want made to fit you. And when your baby's older (at least able to hold their head up), I would suggest switching to a backpack style carrier (front/back or both) since these do a better job of distributing their higher weight.

A travel crib/playpen - I plan on skipping a real crib altogether with my next child and using one of these instead. It works just as well for sleeping up to the age when you'd typically buy a toddler bed anyway, it's smaller, it's portable (Grandma's willing to babysit? Great, we're all ready!), and higher end models even have a relatively high changing table and bassinet for babies up to around 20 lbs (which is great when you're a new mom and your back constantly hurts anyway). Plus, you can get a very nice model for under $100, as opposed to the hefty price of a new crib.

A diaper pail - unless you're planning to take out trash ever day, religiously, these really do make a huge difference. You may not notice any smells at first, but as soon as you start feeding that little one real foods, expect to need noseplugs. A high quality diaper pail helps with this problem tremendously (though don't expect miracles - I've never heard of one that completely eliminates odors, but they do make a huge difference). I'm sure someone out there would disagree with me, but my biggest advice on buying one of these is to skip the Genie!! I have known numerous people who got one and they have all been extremely disappointed. Plus it takes specialty bags which are pretty expensive. I'd stick with the cheaper Diaper Champ, or if you want something nicer for a fancy nursery, the Diaper Decor.

A carrier carseat - ok, so I know a carseat qualifies as "required items" (aka not what you're looking for), but I can't even begin to count the number of times that my daughter fell asleep in the car, just to wake up when we got to wherever we were going because I had to unstrap her from the carseat. With a carrier, you can remove the carseat from the base, leaving your child still safely strapped in place - and blissfully asleep. (Trust me, there's nothing worse than a baby who's cranky from being woken up but too well rested to go back to sleep. This was especially horrible when trying to keep her quiet someplace like church.)

How can i stop my baby from crying?

Maria

I just came back from meeting my inlaws i was with them one month. Now my 10 month baby girl is crying so badly because she wants me to carry her since she was carried all the time over there how can i stop this its starting to get overwhelming because i cant get anything done around my house

Answer
Get a good soft structured or unstructured backpack carrier. This is normal at her age. there is no way to teach her to not want to be carried, you have to feed her needs.

Help Choosing Backpack for School?

Ken

Okay, my case with choosing a backpack is somewhat weird. I am known to pack more than just the casual school essentials. Sometimes, I will bring food, much more than just a common lunch-time snack. I might bring extra clothing. A thick book. Even sometimes toys and electronics. And by electronics, I mean not just a handheld. One time, I brought my Wii to school for a party using my old backpack(now ripped and has holes).

My casual school supplies are:
3-4 Notebooks
1 3in. Binder
Book (ranging from less than half an inch to 3 inches)
Lunch
2 Folder
Pencil Box (which holds all my basic writing essentials)
Laptop

So can any of you please tell me which one of these backpacks would be the best for school?

My husband is 6'2" and 290lbs and I'm 5'8" and 185---we are not small people. I don't want our daughter to have to do a split in order to sit in the carrier. We want a backpack one because she doesn't like to be right up against us either. We are starting to go hiking regularly and would love to be able to take her with us. She is 2 but only 22 pounds. We'd love for her to be able to move around.

Planning honeymoon trip would like a few suggestions about location, whales, secrets (if willing to share)?

Mad Lu

Hi, My fiance and I are planing to go to the islands, Hilo is where he has some family but we are not in touch with them at this moment.
We want to spend 2 weeks 1 week for a cruise around the island and the last week at 1 or 2 locations to really soak it up.
When would be a good time to take the cruise so it will increase our odds to see a whale? or what months are they more active?

What about some state and local parks. are their any main island rules that one should know about prior to hiking or even backpacking?

What other suggestions do you have for a couple that loves the outdoors, and the true culture of Hawaii? Historical sites?

Really i guess i could of summed this up by tell me what you know? any unique locations for a morning picnic. (yeah i'm that corny) lol
any help is appreciated thank you for your time.

Answer
The humpback whales come to Hawaii from the coast of Alaska and British Columbia during the winter and have their babies, then migrate back there in spring. They can not eat while in Hawaii, the mothers lose a huge amount of weight producing milk for the babies, and have to go back to feed as soon as the weather warms up further north.

Backpacking and hiking: I LOVE to hike in the tropical forest. Do watch out for "Kapu" (Tabu) signs and steer clear of private lands, as many locals and native hawaiians frown on tourists. Make sure to wear strong Tevas or flip-flops if you go. Regular sports shoes will be so muddy and wet, will be unsable afterwards. I see a lot of broken cheap rubber flip-flops along the trails, have no idea how people walk through the jungle barefoot! Wear repellent.
http://www.trails.com/toptrails.aspx?area=10015

The most glamorous archeological site is on the Big Island, south of Kailua-Kona (on the west side of the island, opposite from Hilo) in Kealakekua Bay, the City of Refuge. Amazing and exotic site.
http://hawaii.aloha-hawaii.com/tours/city+of+refuge/

Also near Kailua-Kona in Keauhou, the manta rays come to shore at night at the Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort...they shine light on the water and as there is no coral to protect the shoreline, deep-sea wildlife comes right to shore attracted to the plankton attracted to the lights. You can also do a night-time "torch" dive to swim with the mantas now.
http://www.fair-wind.com/mantasnorkeldive.asp

You should stop at the cloud-forest town above Kailua-Kona of Holoalua. It is an artist's colony with a great B&B, but also interesting because this is the center of the Kona Coffee cooperative.
http://www.konalea.com/

North of Kailua-Kona is the Kohala Coast where a lot of the 5-star luxury resorts are. It is also the location of a boat ditch ride which is both historical and fun, has GREAT reviews:
http://www.flumindaditch.com/
(Note: the ditch suffered some damage in the 2006 earthquake, check to make sure it is operational again).

Are you going to Maui? They have a new line of guided adventures cal the "zipline" where you jump off the cliffs tethered to a line. You hike up into the mountains, they start you off easy and cliffs become progressively higher.
http://www.zipline.com/

And while we are at it, since you are on your honeymoon, if you are in Maui, drive the beautiful road to Hana through the jungle and stay at one of their great beach resorts. Very isolated, beautiful.
http://www.hotelhanamaui.com/index.php

You should be able to take a helicopter to the Na Pali coast of Kauai and have a private picnic in a inaccessible spot of paradise. They pick you up later.

My 1 month baby boy sleeps less than normal. When he's awake, he moves his hands and legs, and always kicks his blanket off. He cries, yells, and moves vigorously when sensing light contacts. I always wait until he wakes up (not very long) to move him to another place, otherwise he yells out. He can already lift his head up when lying on his stomach, and tries to flip. Some references point that this is an active-type baby.

I wonder what will this type of baby be good at, later on during teens and adulthood? Sports? Being sociable? What kind of treatments that would stimulate the baby (or later on toddler) to sharpen his strength?

Answer
Yes, I know what you mean.

My daughter was like that, always in motion. I made sure to tire her out pretty well before nap and bedtimes to make sure she got enough solid hours of sleep.

Otherwise, she was a great kid to have around. I put her in a front pack facing outward until she was too big to carry like that, and then in a backpack peeking over my shoulder.

She loved being with me as I cooked, rolled out dough, ironed, worked in the garden, etc. and I wasn't spastic worried that she was going to kill herself because she could climb out of anything (crib, playpen, whatever) from four or five months old and up.

She swam like a fish from a very young age, enjoyed ballet from age 3, and ran triathalons (swim, bicycle, run) untill age 12, when she took up field hockey and tennis.

She's grown now, but goes rock climbing, still dances professionally sometimes, and is in med school, which is physically gruelling along with the mental side.

Just try to get the training in with him BEFORE he goes off recklessly--I had her in swim lessons before she could walk, taught her to drive at age 12 with LOTS of rules to make sure she'd be well in control of a vehicle before that superactive body of hers took over.

I think it paid off because she seeks out the 'proper' way to do things and takes lessons before going into frantic activity . . . LOL.

Are you nervous about taking your baby out with all the flus/colds right now?

francesca2

I am a stay at home Mom, so I am a little biased because I dont have to take my baby out. But I am increasingly nervous about taking her out (she is 4 months old) because of how many people are getting sick.

Do you keep your baby home because of illnesses, or do you still take him/her out?

Answer
No, i do not take my baby out during cold/flu season, with the exception of doctors appointments, visiting family that we know have no illnesses and the occasional walk around our neighbourhood. I do not feel it is necessary to expose my child to high populated areas (malls, stores, parks, etc) at such a young age (he is 3 months) and risk him getting ill, he is not missing out on anything by not going out! I also have a school aged daughter so have enough to worry about with concerns to what she can pick up at school and bring home!! We do our best to prevent illness through vaccinating both my children and using lots of hand sanitizer, my daughter has some in her locker at school and attached to her backpack as well as we have it readily available in our home! Yes, children will get sick it is natural and common but as a parent i feel i can at least do my best to prevent it!

What is your favorite "baby-wearing" sling?

baby backpack carriers kelty image

Elliott's

I am looking into getting a new one, my son is almost 1. I have gone through three different slings/carriers, he outgrew some of them, the others were hard on my back. Had a front carrier sling when he was an infant, then switched to the backpack styles (like Bjorn), but now I am looking at maybe a Moby, Peanut Shell, K'Tan, Kangaroo Carrier, etc...

I am kind of sick of wasting money on ones that don't work/hurt.

Advice, tips, especially for older babies? Which carrier do you prefer?

Answer
We had some issues with hating carriers after a short time (especially since our son, born tiny, has ended up being rather large.) It's only recently that I figured out that if you GO to Baby's R Us and ask a manager, they will send someone over to the carrier aisle to unpack and let you try any carrier they sell. It takes a while, obviously, but we brought our son and really took our time over it this last time.

We were looking for a backpack and ended up buying the Kelty TC 2.1 and could not be happier with it - I know you're not looking for a backpack style carrier, but if your baby is getting over 20-22 pounds, it's worth checking out. It is very adjustable, and acts basically exactly like a hiking pack, except with a space for a baby.

I'm looking for a hiking baby carrier?

Alice

My daughter is 13 months - 22 lbs and still isn't walking. But, my husband and I love to hike. We are looking for a good/inexpensive hiking baby carrier. Preferably one for the back. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Answer
We had a Kelty Pathfinder Carrier that we got at REI eons ago. We loved that in addition to being adjustable for the child, it was really easy to switch the torso length of the backpack so my husband and i could trade off carrying. Walk around a store with your child in tow and see how it feels. A padded hipbelt and auto kickstand are must-haves, but other features we liked were the removable/easily foldable sunshade (great for wind and minor drizzle too), a padded front bar - you'd be amazed how easily your child will sleep back there, zippered pockets on the belt and shoulder straps so we could easily access items on the trail without removing the backpack (snacks, gps, phone), The zip off backpack for storage worked great so when we were hiking together we could each carry some of the load, but if either of us was hiking alone with the child (or the other one was carrying gear as we backpacked) we could have the essentials (diaper, change of clothes, food, first aid kit) with the baby. I'd search Craigslist for a good one at a discount rather than buy a new one that has less features or is cheaper.

Hints: A small hand mirror in the front hipbelt is great for checking on the baby while hiking (Is she still wearing her hat? Is she sleeping?) Sometimes you want the sunshade as a barrier to prevent hair pulling... if your little lady is anything like my second (not a problem with my first).

I am picking up a used backpack carrier tomorrow. Its the nylon material kind on a metal frame. I want to clean and sanitize it before I put my baby in it. Any suggestions on the best way to clean it?

Answer
Clorox wipes first...over anything you can. After it dries completely, go over it with a baby-safe cleaner, like baby wipes.

Any suggestions for a backpack baby carrier?

jveryrad

I have a very active 15month old daughter. She likes to grab objects and destroy them. She is difficult to bring to a store. Yesterday, I had to hold her while shopping in hardware stores because she insisted on opening packages or bottles if I let her down. The shopping carts can be very dirty in a hardware store.

Does anyone use a backpack baby carrier for their toddlers for shopping? I don't do much hiking, and I use a stroller to take her on walks. So I would just use it to take her where I don't want her to run around.

Is it safe to get into? Is there a risk of dropping her while putting the backpack on? Any other uses for this? Any suggestions for brands? I heard Tough Traveler is good. Thanks.

Answer
I love my backpack for shopping, and I can still carry my soon to be 3 year old. This is the one I have http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441776409&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302735239&bmUID=1160421939450 . We bought it almost 5 years ago when our oldest was the right size for it. It still looks brand new. I used it for shopping and long walks, my husband uses it for hiking. Have fun!

Does anyone else ever put their baby on their back when they go jogging?

I see the carriers they make to do this but I never see anyone use them. I figure people have more than one kid so it would not be feasable.

I just wondered if I'm the only person consideing this.

Answer
I use a backpack carrier when hiking, I don't jog (since I was a teen *lol*, I was a long distance runner on the track team *lol*)

If the baby can sit well without support then any backpack carrier will do. If they aren't that developed then you need to take special care, generally you need to use a soft carrier (like a wrap) and swaddle the baby. Because of the stress it causes the hips its not recommended to use a swaddle board anymore.

PS Oi people using a proper baby carrier is incredibly comfortable for mom and baby, it does not stress mom's back. You can *easily* wear up to 20-30% of your bodyweight which for a 150lbs woman is 30-45lbs which is about a 2-4 year old.

And in case you haven't noticed babies like being bounced. Ever heard of the "colic drop", then there's all those bouncers and jumpers on the market. Daddy throwing the baby into the air, etc. I know lots of moms that end up on their yoga ball bouncing up and down vigorously to soothe a tiny baby, if jogging is your thing than go for it, its not like baby won't tell you if they don't enjoy it.

Get a good soft structured or unstructured backpack carrier. This is normal at her age. there is no way to teach her to not want to be carried, you have to feed her needs.

I bought a backpack that looked baby pink but when I got it it was really bright. I don't like it and I can't return it so I'm thinking of colouring the front in in black sharpie. Will it bleed off onto my clothes if it rains?

Have any of you ever done this??
Oh and the bag is polyester I think

Answer
Buy some colored fabric markets at a craft store like Michael's and forget the Sharpies.

Sharpie is fairly permanent on paper, but not so much on other materials. I know this from experience.

Baby wearing mamas, do they make a carrier for babies over 25 lbs?

best infant backpack carrier image
Q. My son has a snuggli infant carrier and the weight limit is 25 lbs. I really like wearing him and I would like to keep doing it, but he just hit 23 lbs.

So, do you have any recommendations?

Answer
My Moby Wrap goes to 35lbs, but now that he is about 25lbs he is really starting to get too heavy for it when I do anything other then carry him around the house.

We use an Ergo when we are out and about, though its not the most attractive looking carrier, it gets the job done. It works a lot like a hiking backpack, to distribute the weight.

I had to give up the front carrier when he was around 10lbs because it killed my shoulders.

Is it hard to take Babies/Toddlers to Disneyworld? Any tips on waiting in lines and how to make it?

Holly

Were taking our 6 month old, almost 2 year old and 3 older girls to DisneyWorld. Im nervous we wont have any fun and it will be Im trying to decide on how to wait in lines with them, should I bring a backpack carrier they sit in and a stroller or one of the other? Can you wait in line with a carrier on? Tips please or should I postpone it. Thanks

Answer
Every ride (just about) you can't have a stroller, they have stroller parking close to each ride. Every ride has a height restriction, some may allow infants while others may not. One of the best thing I learned is the "baby pass". What it is, you ask a Disney cast member standing at the front of the line for a Baby Pass, the first part of your family goes into the 'normal' line of the ride - while the other person waits with the baby. When they get done riding the ride, you can use the baby pass which is good for 3 people and helps you skip the normal line! There are "family" restrooms everywhere and we take our whole family in there if you need to change the babies diaper, a feeding etc. They also have at the front of every park (if you're close to that) a nursing station, with high chairs, cribs, tv's for the kids, snacks for purchase, gliders for breast feeding or bottle feeding your baby, as well as a microwave. It's always very quiet and a great place to get 'away' if you need a little break for a bit.

As for the backpack carrier, you can use it while standing in any line - but for the ride, they will usually ask you to hold the infant in your lap for safety.

Just remember, Florida is hot and lines can be long and both kids and adults can get very cranky! Just try to have a great time and don't worry if the kids get a little fussy here and there! B/c Disney is A LOT of fun and your kids are going to have the time of their lives! :)

Good luck!!

My husband is not close with the baby.?

Q. Okay I have a baby that is a few mts old and my husband was really close to her at first and now he says he can't stand to be around her. He says she is really getting to him with her crying all the time and I am having to do everything myself. Can someone plz give me advice on what to do, I had a bad experience with labor and have not fully recovered and it is hard when I have to do everything. Also any advice on how to get my hubby close to her again

Answer
I sat my hubby down and we talked about things he would be expected to do, rituals. I explained that while his love and support was wonderful, he had to have a special little "just daddy" thing he did. Bathtime was perfect. He could play with her, have toys, I didn't care if she didn't get very clean or if it took a while, the point was just to have daddy-connection time.

Other good times are like morning running time, her in a jogging stroller and going for a ride. Or Daddy's a mule time where he can carry her in a backpack and play. Or every day while you make dinner he sits on the floor and tries to play with her. It's not very easy... at first anyway, they cry and have to get used to it. But it helps build a relationship with time.

Answer
I don't know if I'm an attachment parent or not, but from the very little I know about AP I can safely say that I at least share similar views on most things.

These are things we use regularly, if not daily:
Infant car seat
Play yard (although not so much now that my son has outgrown the bassinet part and isn't quite mobile enough to need it again yet)
Sling or wrap carrier (this has been absolutely invaluable to us, we wouldn't want to live without at least one)
Diaper bag; admittedly a small one, and mostly just for daycare and day long trips
Crib, Bassinet; we used the bassinet for the first four months, after that he moved into the crib
Swing, Bouncer/bouncy seat; we only have a travel swing at home, but he does seem to enjoy the bouncy seat at daycare
Bottles and nipples, Bottle brush; I really wanted to breastfeed but was unable to, plus he needs to take a bottle at daycare while I'm at work
Hamper
Baby towel with hood, Baby washcloths, Infant bathtub; admittedly a regular towel would work just as well, but we got a bunch of hooded towels as gifts
Diaper pail; we use a reusable liner (cloth diapers)
Humidifier; this is really more for us than the baby, we've always had to use one during winter
Safety gates; currently being used mostly for the dogs, but I would consider these essential for any house once the baby is mobile
Pacifiers; we use these on and off, he goes through stages where he really likes them and stages where he won't take them
Baby nail clippers; probably not essential, but I do find them easier to control than regular clippers
Changing table; a lot of people say it's a waste of money, but I use mine every single day and it doubles as storage for diapers, wipes, burp rags, and blankets
Glider or rocker; again, not essential, but I LOVE mine and found it very worth the money (we bought it used for about $40)
Bibs; we didn't use them much until we started solids, but now we go through several a day.

Birth announcements, Baby book or scrapbook, Coordinated crib bedding set, Mobile; these are all just fluff, but they are things I wanted and enjoy anyway. And my son really enjoys "talking" to his mobile. We also have a soft-bristled baby brush that we do use occasionally, but if we suddenly lost it I don't think I'd worry about replacing it.

We don't have a dresser because our nursery is just too small. Instead we either hang his clothes or put them in canvas baskets on shelves in the closet.

We do have a stroller that works with the car seat. But since we have the slings we generally find it easier to use that than fight with the stroller. The sling is more maneuverable (I can go anywhere with it) and takes up no space in the car. I do anticipate using it more when our son is older and when I have more than one child. But for now it's just sitting in his closet.

Hello :)
every time i carry or hold a baby i get 100 degrees and
I just want to get away from the kid, also every kid
i carry or hold weights like a 15 pounds!! heavy!!
I just wanna get him/her away from me...
whats wrong with me?

Answer
Babies tend to be little furnaces. My husband also gets sweaty when he holds babies. For me, they are nice little portable heaters, but I run cold.

As for the weight, it's not that heavy, but babies are balanced differently than a backpack or a bag of flour. Plus they squirm more.

If you don't want to hold babies, don't hold them. Or ask the parent if you can hold them for five minutes because you have to go to the bathroom really badly. That way, you can hand them back without feeling pressured. Or just be honest and say "I feel awkward holding your baby. Can I give him back?"

Good luck!

These two models appear to be the same despite the bag. Looking for opinions on shoulder bag vs. the backpack. I'm going to return to work and will be using it a lot while there.

Answer
I just think it depends on which style you prefer. Would you carry the backpack on your back? Or just want to sling the bag over your shoulder? I have also been looking at the pumps for when I have this baby in August. I think I will be going with the shoulder bag, just because that is the style I prefer.

Sling vs. Carrier, the sling just isn't working out, help?

Hillbilly

I have a sling and a carrier (kinda like a back pack that goes in front). I tried to put my baby in the sling because I left the carrier in the car. I had it all the way tightened but she just drooped all the way down to my knees almost. It was very uncomfortable and heavy on my back. Is it because my baby is too big for a sling now, or maybe because I'm just so short (5'even)? Does anyone else use a carrier vs. a sling? All I see people on here talk about are slings.

Answer
I hated my sling, and my front carrier, and so did my daughter. The moment she could sit with support I started using a proper child-carrying backpack (it was a Macpac, designed for carrying toddlers up mountains). Best thing I ever bought. I almost never even used a pushchair.

If that photo in your avatar is the baby you are talking about, she'd be fine in that style of backpack. She needs full head and neck control, but not to be able to sit alone.

I'm 5'2, btw.
