What website allows you to order individual family reunion tshirts?

We are having a family reunion next year. In order to take some of the stress off of the planners, I would like for individuals to be able to go online to order their own shirts. Similar to going online and ordering items for a child's school (logo shirts, jackets, socks, backpacks, etc.). The problem is, I don't' know where to look. Can someone please give me a website that would allow me to design the shirt and post it so other family members can purchase it?

Answer
Logochefs.com can provide you the solution of your question.

What is necessary now a days in a BASIC backpack for school? ?

Salmon

I work in a NON profit and we give to some of our clients (the ones in most financial need) some backpacks for their children) it is basic stuff, but what are some of the items REALLY necessary for elementary school age backpacks.

and for Teenager years backpacks.

Answer
For elementary school kids: lined paper (probably wide ruled would be best), a simple box of crayons or colored pencils (small boxes, they don't need 64 different crayons), scissors, and some pencils.

For teenagers: college ruled paper, mechanical pencils, extra lead, and pens (probably red, blue, and black)

Also you could get a simple one-dollar pencil case, a few folders, and maybe a few binders if you can. An extra eraser is helpful but not absolutely needed. Highlighters can be given but they are not necessary, as most teachers will let students underline as oppose to highlight.

Hope this helped, I tried to list just the bare necessities. Good luck.

hello everyone, i am 18 weeks pregnant now. I went to IKEA today to see what would I need when the child is born. I must confess, I had no idea how to use half of the stuff available there for babies. I got really depressed. I didnt know what to buy and what not. I have never been around newborn babies, and here i am, a single mom with no clues. dont know how to handle them. Please give me the minimum list of the things I would need immediately after the child is born and until the child is 6 months. Also, please help me if there is something I need to be extra careful about.

Answer
well, your motherly instincts will kick in, unless u are taking medications or drugs. If you have money to spend i would get a baby harness (attaches to you so u can carry baby hands free with backpack like straps, i got mine from walmart by infantino for 30 bux, it is a LIFESAVER newborns like to be really close to you and held all the time, mine did atleast, sometimes the only way i could sleep was with my baby sleeping on my chest and my arms would be right there making sure she didnt roll off, im a light sleeper. I used the harness for her because i couldnt even get dishes done without her screaming to be held. id always rush to shower because she was crying. Nurses at the hospital will teach you how to swaddle your baby in a blanket and dont be shy to ask for tips. I did, because i had no clue either till i had my own, no one told me ANYTHING, I did LOTS of research online about EVERYTHING i could think of and still needed tips. heres what i do, i bought 3 packs of gerber plain white prefold cloth diapers and also 3 packs of birdseye flatfold. I fold the flatfold and use it as a diaper doubler cause shes a heavy wetter, DIAPER pins because they LOCK in place so they cant come undone and stab the baby. ordered them from amazon pack of 36 pins and i really dont need that many pins. I use VIVA paper towels for wipes and also i put them in the cloth diaper as a liner so when its a poopy diaper u just take the liner out for easy cleanup. I used winter fleece sleepers to keep her warm. Newborns can not hold their heads very well so u need to make sure she doesnt sleep with blankets or anywhere where she can suffocate. This is VERY important many babies die because of this neglect. So if u DO cosleep make sure u have a tight fitting sheet and that there is nothing plushy or cushiony nearby. the mattress should be firm and flat. if u cant get a bassinet i heard someone can use a dresser drawer as a bassinet so they dont roll out and onto the floor. i think some yoga mats are pretty firm and flat yet soft enough to provide more comfort than something cold and hard. u need a nose syringe bulb thing to suck snot out of the nose so they can breathe. be ready and have a bottle and formula just incase if breastfeeding doesnt work out. but keep in mind breastfeeding is way healthier and is a once in a lifetime thing that will boost her and keep her healthier throughout her entire life. I switched to burt bees tearless baby wash because i found out all the others had formaldehyde releasers, and my baby got cradlecap (eczema) i believe from that johnson crud which looks like scabs. also my baby had a weak trachea and u could hear noise when she breathes and i would get scarred because it seems like she had a hard time breathing took her to ER and said she would grow out of it and she has. but always call 911 if u think somethings not right. some babies have crying spells where they cry and turn blue cause they stop breathing. they poop every 2 hrs when newborns and eat every 2 hrs, they also need to get patted on the back to burp every 2 hrs because it will help prevent colic. Colic is like a gassy tummy that hurts, remember baby is new to everything and the world so any discomfort will make it cry. if u have extra money get some toys with lights and a mobil they love lights.Youtube has different cloth diaper folds to teach u, thats where i learned some techniques and then developed my own that suited her needs best. 12 diapers a day is expensive. i started solids at 6 months which is recomended by pediatrics because this is when they are able to digest 'solids' so u need baby spoons bibs and lots of washrags. burprags cause they spit up from time to time. a bouncer, a swing, and a johnny jump up are the best babysitters lol - also my baby i gave her a binky most of the time from 2months on because she would suck on it and it would make her throat muscles stronger since her windpipe flap was floppy. also it pacified her and relieved some stress from me so she wouldnt be pacified by me all the time. i needed LOTS of towels because i had so much milk for months when i was engorged leaking out everywhere i bought avent phillips reusable cloth nursing pads from amazon.com and also nursing tank tops for 5 dollars at walmart easy to take ur boob out and not be half naked trying to feed wherever u were baby gets hungry at the grocery store too. Kellymom.com is the best breastfeeding info site and so is dr.greene for different advice on things that may surprise u. such as green poop, for me the green poop was because at first ur milk u produce more foremilk than hindmilk and if baby gets to much foremilk it gives colic sometimes and also green poop. so i would express on a towel to get some of that foremilk out so baby would get more hindmilk and her poop would be more mustard like, sometimes it would be green tho, at 12weeks is when the hormone to produce well mixed milk. fenugreek tea increases supply. do not take aspirin it passes into ur milk and can cause reyes syndrome. at first u will have contractions when baby feeds on breasts but dont give up this is good for the both of u so ur uterus contracts quicker to its normal size. HAVE A BIRTHPLAN READY i wanted the belly button cord to be completely pulsed out till it was white, CORD BLOOD BANKING has healed 82-84 diseases. i could sit here and write a book lol. i'll keep this on watch incase if u want more information. my baby is 8months old and i had a normal birth no complications besides pain and she did not have any shots. especially hep. B shot that is ridiculous to give to a newborn who is developing brain (sorry but my baby will not be on the streets shootin up or havin sex as an infant so therefore the hep. b shot can either wait because of all the toxins or not get it at all), read the vaccine insert ask for it before u give baby anything in a needle. utube bill gates vaccines.

I just found out that I am expecting my 4th. I have a 2 1/2 year old that'll be 3 shortly before the baby is due.

What kind of stroller would you recommend for the infant & toddler?
Obviously, I know a double stroller.... which one?

Answer
My two year old hates strollers always had so I hadn't bothered with a double stroller. I kept playing with the idea of a sit 'n' stand but if the toddler is in the stroller its either because he's sleeping OR he is misbehaving.

Then I finally had to go grocery shopping without my hubby or car and I wasn't up to putting my 10 month old in the backpack carrier so I dragged the double stroller I got for free up from the basement. It was a death trap (jolly jumper) but my toddler *loved* being in a stroller with is brother. And of course winter is coming.

I hear great things about the BOB strollers but they just aren't in the budget. So it came down to the Graco DuoGlider or the Graco Quattro. The Quattro is a bit nicer and it is a bit less long when folder (but I think the 20% claim is pretty far wrong) but its thicker when folded). The Quattro has shocks and a couple of extra cup holders but no tray for the front seat (two cup holder OR a thin padded bar but not both). The DuoGilder was on sale and the Quattro was just not "twice the price" nicer.

The only complaint to so far with the DuoGlider is that the handle is a tiny bit high but then again I'm 5'2". Some people prefer the quattro because the handle dips in the middle so you can sort of pick your handle height (then again you can't lean on it). Oh and the quattro is 10lbs heavier (29 lbs vs 19 I think)

The Quattro gets slightly better review but some reviews who have had both prefer the DuoGlider.

Anyway in the US the DuoGlider is I think about $100 normal price and I don't think you can beat that for a double stroller with a cup holder for everyone and lots of other neat features.

whats a good sling for a summer baby?

two july b

What's a good baby sling to use for a summer baby?
comfy and cool...i also have a 2 yr old so ill need something sturdy while im chasing my first kid. is the sling the same as a carrier? should i get one of each or one that can hold a newborn and an older baby?
thank you were about the same height but i weigh more..

Answer
the two most important things to ensure a good carrier/sling is: SIze of the Parent, and Weight of the Child. A great sling will be of no use if it doesn't fit.

price was not an issue to me so I can't remember what I paid for what, but you can find most of these on eBay if you are not picky regarding the color.

I have purchased (and been given) a total of maybe 6 slings and carriers. Heres my review of them
btw my Post partum weight /height is 126# 5'7"
(I will rank them at the end)

HOTSLING - I got size 3 (way too big for me) and my son hate it, always did, from 8 wks old, at 4 months old, he freakin hates it. My sister is very small (5'1" and about 110#, she bought size 1 and her son enjoyed the ride there). pros - very compact for travel, lightweight. cons - one adult arm is constrained so your are limited (can't fold laundry etc); and my son hated it but it was the wrong size and he fell too low.

MY BABY NEST (available at www.babiesrus.com online) - this uses the concept of a wrap around tie sling but you don't have to tie it. you just slip your arms though and wrap the waist belt around you and under your babies bum. (I got a medium, and even called the company rep and she told me she was the same size as me and she uses a medium). Again, I needed the small. My son sinks too low and it pulls on my shoulders and back. THIS IS PROBABLY THE BEST TYPE WRAP SLING THAT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE TIED OR WRAPPED EACH TIME. It's a pretty amazing little invention, just get a size smaller than you think you are b/c the spandex material is very very stretchy. Pros - comfortable for both mommy and baby if you get the right size, baby can be worn front, back and hip. cons - material stretches out after about 10 minutes of wearing. My husband also says it looks gay and he won't wear it.

SLEEPY WRAP - also a great wrap and my son actually likes this one. It's not that difficult to tie but does take some practice. The pros: comfortable for baby, can wear front/back/side, and one size fits all. Can accommodate toddlers as well as infants cons - also stretchy material, cant' really wear more than 30 min

SlingLing - nice and cool. some babies/parents don't feel secure with it

BABY BJORN - structured type carrier, pros - simple on/off. I can do it without other adult helping. my husband will wear it. baby worn in front but can face parent or outward. cons - not as comfortable for parent when baby weighs 20 pounds or more. can't wear on back. has metal in the clips so you have to take it off when you go through metal detectors at airport.

DEUTER - a great concept if you are over 5'7" tall. I am right on the borderline of this being comfortable. it's basically a backpack that has a seated compartment for an infant/up to maybe a 24month old. Pros - don't have to carry a separate diaper bag, Baby sits in more of a seat like position, good for Disneyland / going on long hikes where you don't want to carry a purse/other bags. Cons - not for short people, or even average height person, also remember it has a full back pack built in. This is a bit of overkill for just puttering around the house.

AND THE WINNER IS:
Ergo Baby Carrier.

Pros - baby can be worn front side and back, newborns (with special insert) and 3 yr olds fit comfortably in it. can purchase a separate small backpack to attatch to the carrier
very comfortable to both parent and baby

cons- it's kinda thick but that's what makes it comfortable. They were designed in hawaii and it's pretty hot there so I think it's ok for summer use.

some people complain about the price. I say better to buy one good one than go through 5 others before you find this one (but in all honesty the My Baby Nest one is awesome but I was just told the wrong size to buy - mis informed by customer service employee).

Why do people home school there children?

Ive never been home schooled and neither will my sons, but I just wanted to know what is the big deal for a child to go to public/private school?

I've noticed that numerous people on this forum have stated children who are homeschooled have a social disadvantage. Then SOME parents were on the defensive by saying "There child has friends that they interact with on a daily basis." What?? 5-10 children from the neighborhood? Please. Whats wrong with having different friends from different neighborhoods?

As a child, there is NO experience like a walk/bus to school with your friends, LEARNING IN A CLASSROOM SETTING(even if it includes a little classroom banter, thats what kids do), playing @ recess with your friends, walking home from school, doing homework/class projects with your parents. For those who had a traditional public/private school education who have decided to NOT allow your child to have the joyous experiences you had as a child, WHY? Did you NOT enjoy "being a kid
Yes, I understand there CAN BE distractions in the classroom(other kids, fire drills), but whats wrong with a traditional school setting? Do you want your children to be up under you all the time without having experience to respect authority other than you and OTHER adult family members? Believe it or not, there is a discipline factor in a traditional classroom. I think teachers HAVE THE HARDEST JOB IN THE WORLD(and are VERY underpaid) because they have to deal with 20-30 different personalities on a daily basis. With the country being MORE diverse than ever, school is the foundation in learning other cultures and traditions. It is a start so when you are older and you come into contact with different ethnicities, you know not to believe the different stereotypes society has placed on different nationalities.

As a child in grammar/middle/1st 2 yrs of HS , 95% of my friends/classmates(we were ALL friends) were afro american. I had NEVER seen a hispanic other than puerto rican.
As a child in grammar/middle/1st 2 yrs of HS , 98% of my friends/classmates were afro american/west indian(haitian, jamaican, guyanese, trini, etc). I had NEVER seen a hispanic other than puerto rican. When I transferred high schools my JR year, I had met dominican/brazilian/ecuadorian/
panamanian/peruvian/colombian people. Im glad i did go to public school because I WOULD HAVE NEVER met any other people than afro-american.
Its funny NO one said that public school would be good for learning different ethnicities/cultures. Maybe because here in NJ the culture is VERY diverse, I appreciate it a little more.

Yes, I did spell their wrong, but when you use "homeschool" in the form that you used it in, it is written "home school", not "homeschool"
I understand that SOME of the U.S. education isnt up to par and kids can get bored when they learn @ a faster pace than the rest of the class(I was one of those children)

I enjoyed going to school. Yeah there were bullys and troublemakers, but hey, it happens. I fel sorry for the children who have to sit for an hr or 2 o the school bus. I didnt have to experience that because here in NJ because MOST of the urban area schools are in the same neighborhood as our homes, unlike in rural areas.
I say teachers are underpaid because youve got people who all they do is play sports and they are getting paid millions of dollars, while the people who count in the "real world" like teachers, social workers, police & firemen(who risk there lives daily), make good money, but not as much as these glorified athletes. Dont get me wrong, I LOVE sports, but i live in the real world.

I do realize teachers make good money in NJ, but compared to all of the worthless occupations who pay more, they are underpaid.

Answer
There are many reasons for homeschooling (some outrageous, most not), but here is my reason.

My 9yr old daughter has a variety of medical 'issues'...for every 2 days she was in the classroom, she was home sick in bed for 3 (after awhile all those absences add up). Two of her 'conditions' require that she carry an Inhaler (asthma) and an Epipen Jr. (Anaphalxia). When I informed the school that she needed to have these items on her at all times in event of an attack, I was informed that the medicine would have to stay either in the Infirmary or in the Front Office and she would have to be brought there in order to recieve treatment. Now please keep in mind that we had a notice from her Pediatrican that these items MUST stay WITH HER.
Not wanting to make waves, I smiled, nodded my head and gave the school a set and then slipped a set in my daughter's backpack (she had it if she needed it), I was also 'informed' that while her need of an Epipen negated her being able to play outside at recess she was 'required' to attend OUTSIDE Gym classes without her Epipen.
My daughter almost died during a OUTSIDE Gym class when she was stung by a Wasp and then told to 'Shut Up and Deal' when it happened-----in less then 2 minutes after being stung my daughter went into CARDIAC ARREST. I was not informed of the incident until 1 hour later when she was in ICU and minimally stabilized----her grade level at school was 1st Grade. The Gym Teacher had the balls to tell me that she did not know of my daughter's health condition nor was she informed of the need for an Epipen or Inhaler, nor was she ever instructed in the use of such 'Medical paraphanalia'. She also stated to me that she was teaching the class alone and had no time to 'deal' with a 'WHINEY BABY', nor any way of reaching the Office Staff other then to send a child to inform them that there had been an 'incident'.

I will NEVER again entrust my child to the care of the Public School System. These so called 'Professional' Educators are poorly trained, in some cases woefully underpaid, are thrown into classrooms that hold 30 children and expected to 'teach' pupils but can no longer discipline ( if you do something wrong in class you get it from the Teacher then get sent to the Office and get it there and then go home and get it again). Gone are the days of the Teacher being held responsible for her students and classroom (nowadays we have Teacher's showing BrokeBack Mountain in class instead of actually TEACHING). Gone are the days when kids went to school properly attired and said Yes Ma'm, No Ma'm, May I, Please and Thank you. Now the kids get a half day in the middle of the week, Teacher isn't expected to utilize his/her time for Lesson planning the way they should and we allow the FCAT which has no real signifigance other then to see if the Teacher is even teaching the material (they spend 3 months learning that junk instead of learning to read, write and figure.) Still half our kids can't do any of it and the Teacher's complain they don't have enough time to teach or plan but yet want off more days. Our response you ask!?! Lengthen the school day, cut down summer vacation and add more Teacher Planning days. What's wrong with that picture???? OH and while your at it, let's dumb down the academics, yet require 4th graders to start Algebra and require High Schoolers to have volunteers hours in order to graduate (little hard to volunteer if Jr. and Sally are spending 90% of their time at home catching up on school work that they couldn't finish in class) and flunking them if they don't have all the 'Required time' but pass Paul and MaryJo because they are on the Football and Cheer Squad (don't worry they don't need to read for those jobs....just play well and look sexy).
Just so that the record is set straight... I am a product of the late 60's, attended both Pulic/Private school in the 70's & 80's, recall 'Corporal Punishment' and it's ripple effect and went on to become a Preschool Teacher---I have since that time witnessed the decline of our youth, the total lack of discipline, respect for self and others and the lack thereof morals and standards. My children ( I have two) understand that I make the rules not them, I am the final authority in all things (unless you are dealing with Religion then I pass the buck to God), I brought them into this world and I can take them out. Don't like the fact that I spank---here's the phone, while you are calling Children's Services I'll pack your bags and you can wait outside for them and don't let the door hit you in the butt on your way out.

To sum it all up ---yeah I loved being a kid and yeah I think I'll let her have a joyous occasion .....by learning in an environment that treats her for the individual she is, not some seat assignment or dollar sign (for every child the school has they get yeah so much money and are not above fudging their records). The old days are gone and school is not the same as you and I once knew it--if it was then the old rules would still apply, kids would have far more respect and life would be easier.
My kids get their 'Social' from Girl/Boy Scouts, neighborhood children, Church, Volunteer Work, and Living History and extra curricular activities.

Any suggestions for a backpack baby carrier?

I have a very active 15month old daughter. She likes to grab objects and destroy them. She is difficult to bring to a store. Yesterday, I had to hold her while shopping in hardware stores because she insisted on opening packages or bottles if I let her down. The shopping carts can be very dirty in a hardware store.

Does anyone use a backpack baby carrier for their toddlers for shopping? I don't do much hiking, and I use a stroller to take her on walks. So I would just use it to take her where I don't want her to run around.

Is it safe to get into? Is there a risk of dropping her while putting the backpack on? Any other uses for this? Any suggestions for brands? I heard Tough Traveler is good. Thanks.

Answer
I love my backpack for shopping, and I can still carry my soon to be 3 year old. This is the one I have http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441776409&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302735239&bmUID=1160421939450 . We bought it almost 5 years ago when our oldest was the right size for it. It still looks brand new. I used it for shopping and long walks, my husband uses it for hiking. Have fun!

How long does it take for you to pump breastmilk?

My daughter is 12 days old. She's very sleepy and doesn't latch on well, so I've been using a Medela backpack pump (the next strongest grade after a hospital grade) every 3 hours, including nights. It's been 12 days and after pumping for 40 minutes I still get less than 1 ounce combined. It doesn't appear to increase in amount. I'm taking 6 fenugreek supplement pills each day. My cup size is A. Does that mean I need to pump longer or more often?

Answer
I feel your pain! I went through this exact same thing! The pumping regimen really wears you down, but hang in there, it is SOOO worth it! I wound up being able to nurse my daughter till she was almost 15 months. And with my second baby I had OVER supply.

I would not pump so long - it can make you sore and kindof have the opposite effect - if you are so worn out you will not produce.

I'd limit your pumping to 15-20 mins at a time. Fenugreek dosing is very individual - you should be taking enough that your sweat starts smelling like maple syrup. I never had much luck with the pills, I had better luck with a liquid formula called "more milk plus" it is also fenugreek but stronger, you can get it at Whole Foods or other health food stores, or online.

One thing that could be happening is that your supply is going up, but the baby is drinking it all, and the "leftovers" for the pump stay low, if you see what I mean?

If it does not appear that your baby is getting an increase in milk, talk to your doctor (pediatrician, lactation specialist, or whoever is advising you...) about getting medication to help. Domperidone and Reglan are prescription meds that are actually intended for acid reflux, but have the "side effect" of increasing prolactin! I did five days of Reglan and my supply went from 1 oz to about 3.5 oz per session.

If you are not familiar with the site Kellymom, it has LOTS of helpful information about bf'ing and building supply, and other issues related.
http://www.kellymom.com/bf/supply/index.html

Best of luck to you in a very difficult situation, and all good wishes to your baby!

What is a good backpack for 8 month old?

mica.dance

I'm looking for a good, comfy backpack for my 8 month old. Just to do some light walking/hiking in this fall/winter. I like the kind that the baby can see over your shoulders. I've heard Kelty Kids is a good brand, but sooo expensive!
The problem with soft carriers is that the baby usually sits right on your back, not up enough to see over your shoulders like ones with metal frames.

Answer
I had the Kelty, I got mine for about $70, but it was amazing, it honestly did not hurt my back at all and my daughter was 18 months when I used it (26lbs) I would highly recommend it, maybe you can see if someone is selling second hand in your area online (craigslist etc) or even at a second hand store. It was also great in the winter, putting her in that instead of trying to push a stroller through the snow, my daughter loved it!

For my sca

I have been doing alot of research and I think I have decided to purchase my own breastpump, I wish to breastfeed for the first year. Although it is alot of money up front I think it will be more convienent as well as cheaper than formula and renting a pump for a few months. My question is is the Medela breast pump compatible with any other type of bottle? My fiance' and I would prefer Avent bottles but the Medela pump has the best reviews and I can't find bottles for that pump anywhere. Also what is your experience with this pump?

Answer
I have that pump and it is great. The backpack comes with 4 bottles for storage, a cooler with ice pack and a manual pump that works great. There's also a battery pack, in case there is not an outlet. I am really happy with the purchase.
You can pump into the storage bottles and then transfer milk into the avent bottles. I know that the Dr Browns bottles will work, but I don't know about Avent. The wide ones won't work. Personally, though, I use either the storage bottles that were provided, milk bags or these little storage bottles (http://store.nursingmothersupplies.com/cgi-bin/store-mothernursingsupplies/00043.html?id=PFR4fy9j&mv_pc=9291) for freezing milk. I use Born Free bottles. It sounds like your baby is not born yet--- be aware that the choice of bottle will depend more on the baby than the pump. If your baby does not like the nipple on the Avent bottle, you will have to switch anyways.

Need review for the baby items...?

truecolor

Hi all...I am in my third trimester. I am going to register baby items at Babies r us this weekend. This is my first baby and I am not sure which items and brands should I pick is safe and comfortble for my baby and pricewise reasonable too. Please give me the review about the baby items and items I do need must. Thank you all.
Thank you all ....for sparing your precious time and giving me lots of information in detail. I am new in this country and first time mom. So, not much idea how to choose the right baby items. But your patience and support helped me alot to select the right things for my baby too instead of wasting money. I am going to print out all those information and check out those items in the store. Once again thank you.

Answer
I highly suggest taking a (relatively) new mom with you to register. My sister (who had a 2 year old at the time) went with me to register and she was a HUGE Help.

Here are a few suggestions.

There has been a lot of press recently about car seats so I'm sure you can google which ones are safest. The one that sticks in my head (b/c it's the one we have) is Graco Snug and ride. I would recomend getting a Snap and Go base so that you can turn the carseat into a stoller.

The crib is totally a matter of taste. We chose the Da Vinci Roxanne because I liked that it could transition into a toddler bed and I liked that it had a drawer under it.

If you get a changing table, make sure it has safety straps (so that baby can't roll off it). We choose the Da Vinci Roxanne changing table dresser combo.

Actually.... I still have my list that has prices and brands that I wanted. I can paste it here -- sorry.... it's going to be long.

Furniture
â Crib â (Da Vinci Roxanne with drawer and conversion kit) $260

â Glider chair (Storkcraft sleigh glider â Cherry wood/beige cushion) $199
â Ottoman for glider (storkcraft) $70
â Hanging bookshelf (idea to hand shelf 12â to 18â below the ceiling around room to add lots of display and storage space)

Room Accessories
â Crib mobile (electric â the wind up ones stop to fast) Be careful what you pick out b/c all mobiles will not work with Da Vinci crib $40-$50
â Video Monitor (Summer infant Products: Day and Night Video handheld monitor) $170
â Baskets (for odds and ends â blankets, cloths, dirty laundry) $20+

Traveling With Baby

â Cotton balls >$5
â Desitin >$10 ?

â Diaper bag/baby sherpa backpack $25+ Look at the Koala Black Messenger back with pink accent/ Eddie Bauer and plain black messenger

Its Okay E

Im trying to find a site where they sell the baby carrier backpacks, they are cloth and usually tan there is no metal frame of anything. Does anyone know where to find one?

Answer
DO NOT GET THE SNUGLI, bjorn, or others like this. They are bad for babies spine and hips, and soon hurt mom's back. Good ones that distribute weight correctly are the Ergo, the Baby Hawk, the Beco and similar brands. You pay much more, but you can comfortably carry a 25 pound 2 year old in these carriers. The good carriers have baby sitting on their bums, the snugli dangles baby from the crotch.
http://www.attachedtobaby.com/Buckle-Carriers-C5.aspx
I have used the Ergo for a 25 pound 2 year old, and I loved my ring sling from this site. I'm now using a Baby Hawk Oh Snap for the 2 yr old, I'm in a baby wearing network in town and we all share slings and carriers.

How do you carry your baby when you go out?

Mountains

When you go out with your baby, what do you use to carry him or her around? I'm just wondering which items I should get before my little one is born, so I thought I'd ask all of the moms & dads - which item(s) do you use the most when you go out? and why do you prefer to carry them that way?

For example:
Stroller
Carseat carrier
Sling
Hold in arms
Backpack carrier
Front carrier (ex. Snugli)
other?

Answer
I agree with the car seat in stroller. The reason I like this, is purely CONVENIENCE! When you use this method, your baby is already in the car seat in the car, you simply unbuckle the car seat from it's position, press the carrier's release button, and wah-lah the car seat is free to go with you. Next, your husband pulls the stroller around and the carseat clicks right into place, than the car seat and stroller both have a canopy that connects, so baby is better protected from wind, rain, and loud noises. You can stroller baby around which is great, because trust me, baby's get heavy overtime and tired arms make for tired moms. The stroller makes for a smooth ride, and you can use the under carriage to store baby's items, diapers, spit-up rags, extra bottles or whatever, plus they usually come equipped with a cup holder which is perfect to hold a drink of your choice while you are moving around the store.

The super positive points:

If baby is sleeping, you don't have to wake the baby at all when you leave him/her in the carseat, you don't have to worry about anyone bumping into baby on accident, because they were not paying attention to your precious bundle you were carrying in your arms.

If you are in a grocery store, and don't need a stroller, the car seat carrier should just click right into the cart, and again, you won't have to wake baby up, or worry about how dirty the pre-provided baby carrier that comes with some shopping cart might be.

What should I bring when travelling with my baby?

Gal in red

My baby will be five months old when I travel and I will be out of the conuntry for a month. What should I bring with me?

Answer
Hopefully you are nursing. Then you don't have to deal with worrying about water quality or hauling formula.

If you us formula- use POWDER...and only bottled water....and insist the bottles be brought to you UNOPENED so you can see the seal....then you know they weren't refilled.

Bring orajel and baby tylenol...and any over the counter medication you use for baby. You don't want to need to rely on meds in another language.

Carry diapers for a week and wipes. Don't drag a months worth. Every country has diapers. Lay in your stock as soon as you get there. Put the wipes in a ziploc bag- less space.

Disposable bibs.

Only 2-3 SIMPLE toys.

Car seat. This can double as a "highchair." I've even hauled car seats into movie theaters. The weight holds the seat down, and my kids were always happy to sit in their carseat if they were watching a movie.

Umbrella stroller and a baby backpack. Backpacks are easier than slings when they are that age- and when you have luggage.

Baby will be on cereal by then....depending on where you are going, you should be able to get dry cereals. Again....watch the water!

A blanket or toy baby associates with their bed. this will make the sleeping arrangements seem more homey.

If you will be travelling across more than 1 time zone...start adjusting baby to the new schedule 2 days for every time zone you are crossing (30 minutes a day)...so your travel day is the second to last day of adjustment......don't forget to reverse it on your way back.....it's good for you, too----you won't lose time to jet lag.

Keep with you on travel days.....a bag with EVERYTHING baby would need for 3 days...and then a few more diapers. When our 3rd was a month old, my husband and I tok her across the country with us on a business trip....and rest trip for me. She nursed, so no problem there....but the airline LOST the bag with her "gear." I was so glad I had 3 days supplies for her....it took that long to get her bag back!

How do you occupy your baby at a restaurant?

Gracee's M

So I have been cooking a lot lately but tonight by husband took Gracee and I out for dinner. It was really kinda crazy trying to get Gracee to sit still in her high chair with out trying to stand up, and she was getting restless and bored. I kept giving her food and snacks to play with and eat but they eventually just ended up on the floor.
Do you have any restaurant tips or anything to keep your baby happy and entertained through-out the whole meal?

Answer
i have a little backpack full of toys that i bring with us to the restaurant.
its loaded with so many different things that its hard for them to get bored. and my kids are only 3 1/2 years old and 10 1/2 months. its got everything in it. dolls, cars, blocks, crayons and coloring books , you name it its in there!! oh and a little packet of wipes too!. ;0)
so when we get to the restaurant i sit them in at the table and when they start getting fidgety out come the toys!. and they play quietly until the food comes then the toys go away until they are done eating and then they get cleaned up and out they come agin until everyone is finished and ready to go. :0)
but dont worry too much, most kids even with an abundance of toys arent going to sit through an entire meal at a resaurant without making a peep. just take it in stride and be thankful they arent screaming the whole time and throwing their food at the people next to you . lol :P just try to go to family restaurants :0)
now believe me this isnt something we practice at home, but toys work wonders for eating out!. our bag is always packed and in the van ready to go, just in case we make any last minute stops. and it comes in hand when we get stuck anywhere waiting.!
good luck next time! :0)

Q. Its past midnight where I am. Im bored so I thought Id ask how everyones day went.

I woke up super early, went to church, had a potluck & then my pasters boyfriend stole my seat when I got up to get cake, then I went to target with my sister & we bought bathing suits, a backpack, Little Manhatten (the movie), shoelaces with pink stars on them & other travels supplies, shes leaving for Disney World later, then we went to walmart where I bought some red (my fav color) earbuds and my dad told me he was buying us laptops for Christmas this year (YES!), then we got bored waiting for my mom&sis so we sat in the Mcdonalds & watched a little person reason with her 7yr old daughter & they were practically the same height, then some girl walked in in her bikini, and my dad told me stories about how he used to work in a gas station & the stuff he had to deal with, then I bought a pillow pet for my best friends birthday, then I went to my cousins graduation party & had the most amazing lasania ever! But then my brother & his kids showed up & they were being brats. Then I went with my sister to her friends house to get her prom dress & phone charger. Then I came home, got on facebook, tweeted/facebooked about footloose & hawaii. Then I ate kiwi and grapes for dinner & attempted to install my printer, looked into bording schools, dropped a vase, cut my toe open, put a bandaid on it. Checked facebook, chatted with 2 of my cousins & found out that another cousins rich friend is taking him on his family vacation to Hawaii. Got jealous, then told my other cousin to tell him he'd be awesome if he brought me back a ukelele. Now, im sitting here being jealous of My sister& my cousin & chilling on Y!A, watching Little Manhatten, thinking about playing some Sims 3. What have you done today?

BQ: What number am I thinking of?

BQ2:Whats your fav band & fav song by them?

Answer
Sunday (Yesterday): My boyfriend, friends and I pulled an all nighter and we went to Vauxhall Bridge in London to watch the Queen's Golden Jubilee. We were there at 5:00am, so the crack of dawn and we got a good view right by the river and we could see everything. I was surprised though with how many there were at that time already. It was beautiful because we bought our breakfast from a French bakery near our university and brough our breakfast with us. We ate our breakfast and had our mug of coffee while watching the sunrise over looking the river Thames :) waiting for the boats and the royal family to come through wasn't too long of a wait. We had our books, some music, drinks and a little barbecue to keep us busy, and we also met some new people who were lovely. We did get caught up in the rain though, but everything was worth it. The boat were beautiful and the atmosphere was truly something special. It was really weird though because ahead of me, I could see the river but behind me I could see a sea of people haha. After we got soaked by the rain, as we forgot to bring umbrellas, but we went to eat at pizza hut and we then bought some waffles covered in nutella </3 I then went back home kinda of early for 8:00pm (I normally stay out way later) and watched the final of the apprentice and then went to bed.

Today: It's 7:08am and I getting ready to go to work on my hospital placement - (I'm a medical student) and I am still on the cardiovascular ward which I loved. I had a nightmare today and I woke up crying :/ it wasn't pleasant and I am very annoyed that I couldn't sleep, as I am tired, my eyes are puffy and I look like a zombie. It's a bank holiday today which means less nurses and doctors on the ward today, and more responsibility for me, which I don't mind but means I am going to have to set up my game a bit and pay attention. At least I finish fairly early today and my best friend & I are going to have McDonalds. I have been trying to cut down on my junk food and sweet & chocolate intake, however under exam stress, moving into my new home and working at the hospital, chocolate is my baby and my new best friend :/ I seriously have to stop eating, otherwise my skin is going to breakout like a motherfcuking b1tch

BQ: 7? That's the first number that popped into my head
BQ2: The Killers - Mr Brightside

Have a nice day x

Convertible car seats...?

baby backpack minimum age image

Rene

I have twin boys that turning 1 in a couple of weeks. They spend a significant amount of time in 3 different cars (mine, my husbands, and grandparents...they babysit). Which means that we need SIX car seats. At their cheapest they are $45. Multiply that by six and it gets expensive. Is anyone aware of any company that gives discounts to parents of multiples or know of any company that sells them cheaper? Any help would be much appreciated.

Answer
Whoa! Well, you are right on wanting seats for each vehicle they are in frequently. The more often a car seat is uninstalled/reinstalled, the more likely it will be installed incorrectly as we rush to get it in and out. So it is a need. Babies R Us has a multiples discount, but you do have to buy them all at the same time. From their website: "BABIES "R" US MULTIPLE BIRTH DISCOUNT

Does Babies "R" Us offer a multiple birth discount? We are pleased to inform you of our multiple birth discount. Babies "R" Us defines a multiple birth as parents with two or more babies the same age. We offer our customers 10% off two or more of the same items purchased in the same order (e.g. two cribs, two bedding sets, two strollers, etc.). The discount can not be combined with any other offers, including sale priced items, and applies to the following categories only: furniture, bedding sets and baby gear, including car seats, strollers, travel yards, highchairs, swings, gates, exersaucers/walkers and backpack/carriers. Double strollers and matching infant car seats are also eligible for the multiple birth discount. This offer is not available on any special purchase items. Corporate sales do not qualify for the multiple birth discount. "

The cheapest seat you are referring to is the Cosco Scenera, and its actually not a bad seat. Not hard to install, easy to use, and rear faces to 35lbs (more on why that's so great later!) The bad part is, you get what you pay for. It only forward faces to 40lbs and the average child will outgrow it at 2-3 years old which means at that time you'll be out shopping for 2 new harnessed seats again, b/c 2-3 year olds can not be put in booster seats. If you're ok with that, I'd suggest getting a couple of these for some of the cars. They'd last long enough that you can work towards saving for the harnessed seats they're going to need when they outgrow them.

As for the least expensive in convertible seats that you will get your money's worth out of and really like, here's the pick of the litter:
When shopping Remember these rules:
1)the BEST seat is the one that fits your child, fits your car, and will be used correctly 100% of the time. (This is why convenience features DO make a difference and ARE worth the money! If its easy to use, you're more likely to use it correctly.
2)children need to stay rear facing as long as possible.
Turning kids forward at 20lbs/1year is an outdated practice that could cost you your child's life!
A)A forward-facing child under 2 years old is 5 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a crash than a rear-facing child of the same age.
B)A child's vertabrae do not fully fuse until 3-6 years old, before then, she is at great risk for internal decapitation. The spinal column can stretch up to 2 inches in a crash BUT the spinal cord can only stretch up to 1/4 inch before it snaps and baby is gone.
C)Current research suggests that children under the age of two years are 75 percent less likely to die or be seriously injured when they are riding rear facing.
D)In a recent article from Injury Prevention, it was found that the odds of severe injury to forward facing children age 12-23 months old was 5.32 times higher than a rear facing child. (Car Safety Seats For Children: Rear Facing For Best Protection; Injury Prevention 2007; 13:398-402.)
3)Once you do turn them forward facing, they need to stay in a 5 point harness as long as possible. 4 years/40lbs is the minimum for riding in a booster, and most 4 year olds have no business using one yet. If they can't sit upright for an entire trip, they need the harness of a car seat still. And, even if they do sit properly, a 5 point harness is safer, so you want to keep them in one as long as possible. This is important to consider b/c most car seats only forward face to 40lbs. My son just turned 3, and is in the 95th% for height and weight - 40" tall and weighs 41lbs. He outgrew the 40lbs seats shortly after his 2nd birthday. It was a total waste of money. He now has a Britax Marathon, which goes to 65lbs, and will be able to fit it for some time yet. If I'd have bought it when he was born, I could have had one car seat this whole time instead of the 3 I wasted money on. They are more expensive for many reasons, this is one.

So...knowing all that, here's some about specific seats. Please don't get a Graco Comfort Sport. Car seat techs call it the 'crappysport'. LOL Its a crappy seat that won't last your child very long b/c it has a really short shell. The straps twist all the time, and if they're twisted they won't support your child in a wreck properly. They're hard to install. There's nothing good about these seats except perhaps they're cheap sometimes. Ditto the Safety1st 3-in-1/Cosco Alpha Omega/Eddie Bauer 3-in1 seats. These are all the same company - same seat, just different covers. They stink. Hard to install, b/c of narrow belt paths. Ever tried to wash a skinny cup by hand? Now imagine that skinny cup with pointy edges. That's what putting your hand through these to install them is like. AND they have too short a shell to really go to 40lbs. And that's another misleading thing the box says - 5-100lbs. What the box fails to mention (you don't find out until reading the manual!) is that the harness only goes to 40lbs, NOT 100lbs! After 40lbs it must be used as a booster. And they do not make good boosters. Also, most kids have to use boosters until they're at least 8 years old. Car seats expire 6 years after the date of manufacture, so no matter what they say it is NOT the last seat you'll ever need to buy.

The Britax Marathon/Boulevard/Decathalon (These 3 are the same seat, just different variances of luxury additions, with the Marathon being the cheapest base model) can be found for regular price of $269, and on sale at Albee Baby online for $209-$219. The Marathon a wide open easy to route belt path, which makes using it correctly a lot easier, as do the built in lockoffs, which mean you never again have to use a locking clip. I can get it into 4 different vehicles in under 2 minutes. Because of the way the base is made, it fits in most cars. And, it is worth the money, b/c it lasts usually twice as long as most other car seats (all car seats expire 6 years after the date of manufacture) lasting a baby till they are 5-6 years old, where most at Walmart will only last till 2-4 years old. Rear faces to 33lbs, then forward to 65lbs. and top slots 17inches tall, lasts most kids to ages 5-6 years old. If you're really wanting these, Britax does 2 annual sales where you can get them for great prices: Sept/Oct and Jan/Feb. But check around, often you can find seats with discontinued covers at albeebaby or amazon for great prices.

The Evenflo Triumph Advance (not the original Triumph, make sure it says Advance) is a great seat. $150 version at Babies R Us has padding similar to Britax seats, top slots of 17", harnesses to 35lbs rear facing, and 50lbs forward facing. $120 Walmart version just has little less plush padding. Wide open belt path, easy to install, though it doesn't have built in lockoffs. The harness adjusts at the front of the car seat, you don't have to take the car seat out of the car just to raise/lower the straps. It has infinite harness adjustment so the harness always fits perfectly until its outgrown. No more tugging straps to tighten them either. You tighten and loosen the harness using knobs on the side of the seat. As a major bonus, it can be used in a recline position even in forward facing mode. Awesome for kids who still sleep in the car. I LOVE THIS SEAT! LOL My son, who is too big for every other car seat at Walmart has the same amount of room in this as the Britax Marathon. These were sale priced a few weeks ago at Walmart, don't know if they still are.

The Compass Tue Fit, also sold as The First Years True Fit, is a great choice, too. Here's a thread talking all about it: http://www.car-seat.org/showthread.php?t=37221&highlight=truefit Has 16.5 inch top harness slots, half inch shorter than the Britax Marathon and Evenflo Triumph Advance. Rear faces to 35lbs, forward faces to 65lbs, has built-in lockoffs, and you never have to rethread the harness to change harness height. The headrest is removable to fit better in smaller cars. $179 for the one cover Walmart offers it in, check Babies R Us and other stores for different covers at a little more expensive price.

If you have a Burlington Coat Factory near you, it would be worth making a visit to see if they have any Fisher Price Safe Voyage Deluxe car seats. The Fisher Price Safe Voyage Deluxe Convertible seat is great, it is made by Britax, without all the frills. It's the same shell as a Marathon, but for less than half the price. $130 at Albee Baby online with free shipping, or at their eBay name, babysurplus. Rear faces to 33lbs, forward to 55lbs. Easy to use, fits in most cars. A small word of warning about these seats: they are now officially not making them anymore, so the date of manufacture is getting older and older, with many being delivered that are 6+ months old already. Since car seats expire 6 years after the date of manufacture, this could make a difference to you, especially since its possible your child could fit in the seat for the next 5-6 years. But since they're marked down to $30, its an awesome deal!

It may take some juggling of seats for a little while to get really good prices on seats you actually want.

Strollers are making me go insane?

FunkyMonke

So i have a high risk pregnancy and an overly cautious and slightly superstious husband, so i am 23 weeks and i have bought NOTHING... this however has been replaced by EXCESSIVE amounts of research on baby stuff, every freaking baby object you can imagine i have went nuts on reading reviews of, especially strollers. I have read so many blogs, seen so many pictures, i am literally obssessed with this stroller thing, i even read the reviews of European websites and i use a translator sometimes! I thought I had it figured out and settled on the Quinny Buzz + bassinet + Maxi-Cosi-Mico car seat, but then i realized the maxi cosi only lasts to 20 pounds and my friends baby is 22 pounds at 4 months! THen i saw the PEG PEREGO SKATE, and now i think i want that stroller instead. I was obssessed with the Stokke Explorey before i saw the Quinny in the store. I never liked the bugaboo b/c of it folds in two pieces. SO now i am just becoming super confused!!!!!!! What should i do? what stroller do i get? I am getting it later but i want to decide on it now? Please do not tell me i am insane for spending a lot of money on a stroller, i know it is excessive but when i went to Babies R US to look at the basic things like Graco and Evenflo I almost cried. They do not compare, and i do not want to buy another stroller in a year because those fell apart. I live in the city, the stroller has to be sturdy, i do not go on public transport pretty much ever , I do not use a car often, only with my husband (its a stick, i dont know how to drive it) ..... i want a stroller that is forward and rare facing and i want something that will last until child 1 is 4 and then through any other children i will have.
umm the stuff at babies r us sucked. They do not have the same stuff as they do online. They do not have stokke in stores or even bugaboo, atleast not the store i went to
Unfortuanatley i am in the US. The stroller options availabe in Europe just do not compare to anything we have here. The best strollers here are imported from EU, and only few are imported. You guys have the Joolz Bloom out recently, i can not even look at it as no store has it.

Answer
Wow!! You sound like me! I read some of your post to my husband, and he was cracking up because it sounds so similar. I have a huge spreadsheet comparing widths, weights, folds, etc. for a couple dozen different strollers but have pretty much narrowed it down to just a few. We just drove over two hours (each way) yesterday to go stroller shopping for the first time. At the first store, we saw the Orbit Baby, Stokke Xplory, and Quinny Buzz (as well as a less expensive model we didn't like at all called the EasyWalker Sky.) Even though my husband initially ruled out any 3-wheel styles, he loved the Quinny. (It actually has two little wheels instead of 1 in the front center position.) I definitely liked it best of those three. Unfortunately, we didn't get to see the bassinet, which is something we'd definitely get. Then at the second store, we were able to see the Peg Perego Skate and the Bugaboo Cameleon. Well, my husband never, ever thought he'd want to spend $900 for a stroller (when I started my research, he thought even $500 was nutty), but it was seriously love at first sight. He really didn't even want to bother with the Cameleon after seeing the Skate. (In his words, it's like the Ferrari of strollers...the whole "Italian thing".) Like you, I had also ruled out the Bugaboo because of the 2-fold thing, but it's my mom's favorite (because of all the "pretty colors"), so I was trying to be open-minded. The only reservation I had had about the Skate (other than the high price, of course), prior to seeing it, was the weight: 33.7 lbs! But it didn't bother us at all. Like you, this is our first child so maybe we don't really "know" how much of a pain it's going to be to lift it in and out of the car every day. But we're both healthy, strong, fairly athletic people, so we decided it doesn't matter to us. I'd say that the bugaboo maneuvers every-so-slightly better than the Skate but not so much so that we'd consider it over the Skate. Now, the only other "serious contender" is one we haven't been able to see in person: the Uppababy Vista. It's a LOT cheaper and doesn't seem to have any major flaws (other than the 27" width when the regular all-terrain wheels are on it.) My parents (who live elsewhere in the country) have seen both the Skate and the Uppababy. Dad loved the uppababy but forgot why by the time he saw the Skate. (Clearly, he isn't taking this whole "stroller research" thing as seriously as he should!!) They saw the Skate and Cameleon side-by-side. Unfortunately, the salesman who demonstrated them was CLEARLY biased against the Skate and loved the Cameleon. I won't get into everything he said here, since this is already probably too long of a response, but suffice to say that I don't think it was a "fair comparison". So mom left the store still thinking the Bugaboo was still superior. That was disappointing for us, since we were hoping she'd share our "Skate excitement". Anyway, the only stroller other than the Uppababy I haven't seen and still haven't eliminated (based on negative reviews, specs, etc.) is the Bumbleride Queen B. But at this point, I'd say it's likely between the Uppababy and the Skate for us. Perhaps if we saw the Quinny bassinet and loved it, we *might* be tempted to put it back on our short list. But really, that convertible bassinet-seat feature is awesome. The guy who showed my parents the Skate emphasized that the Bugaboo bassinet is far superior in terms of baby's comfort, but to us (again, "first time parents", so take my comments with a grain of salt), the Skate bassinet looked plenty comfy! So I don't know if I've helped at all. Like you, I just want to DECIDE, even if we don't buy right away, so I can move on to the next decision (carriers/backpacks, perhaps...) And it sounds like we are basing our decision on very similar criteria. Have you seen the Skate in person? I think there's a very good chance that's what we'll end up with. The only remaining concern we have about the Skate is that it's the first model year, and there are bound to be minor glitches as a result, at least in some of the strollers they sent out. So that's a risk. My husband is going to call Peg Perego USA customer service on monday, partly to get answers to a couple little questions but also partly to find out how easy they are to deal with, in the event that we do get the Skate and have problems with it. I know Peg Perego is a solid brand that's been around forever. (My mom had Peg Peregos for my siblings and me!) But we're certainly not taking the decision to buy a $900 stroller lightly. (not to mention the $250 infant seat that goes with it and possibly the $100 matching storage bag...) Best of luck in your search! Hopefully, you'll just see one and just know that it's "the one" for you!!

Can a breastfeed baby of three months, be given the bottle only for four days, then go back to breastfeeding?

My baby is now a month old. She is currently both breastfed by her mother and given a bottle (which contains pumped milk, not formula). We want to go on a vacation when the baby will be 3 months old, where the baby will be left with her grandmother. If our daughter is given a bottle for those 4 days, when we get back, will she be able to go back to breastfeeding? Any personal experience or insight would be great.

Answer
I think that it is very unwise to leave a 3 month old baby, even if not breastfeeding. There is no way to explain to the baby where mother is and when she will be back. And there is no guarantee that she will go back to the breast when the mother returns. Plus, mother will have to pump regularly day and night in order to preserve her milk supply and be comfortable while away (at least every 3 hours) with a large, double electric pump. Babies whose mothers disappear, even temporarily, have been known to grieve for them.

Have you considered taking the baby with you? Babies are easy to travel with at this age, especially when breastfeeding. All you really need is a baby carrier and a backpack for diapers and some extra clothing. My babies always slept well at the beach under an umbrella and towel.

Even if the mother is currently considering such a trip away from the baby, she might well have second thoughts in 2 months and be reluctant to go away. Is she enthusiastic about this idea?

In answer to your question about the baby going back to exclusive breastfeeding: maybe the baby will start breastfeeding again. But it might take several days and a lot of effort on the mother's part when she returns, and the baby will have to go back to exclusive breastfeeding, at least temporarily (no bottles at all).

what is the best baby carrier for a 9month old baby?

Carla

I am thinking buying A BABY carrier for my 9 month old, thinking of using it for awhile. What is the best one out there?

Answer
Ergo.

it's a soft front or back pack...the newer model can also be used on the hip.

it is ergonomically designed for the wearer and the rider.

wearer - wears like a back pack, sternum belt, wide shoulder straps, thick lumbar supportive waist strap.

rider - baby sits in a more natural position where his/her weight is distributed across the butt and thighs... does not hang by the crotch like bjorns/snuggli type carriers

it goes up to 40lbs... though that recommendation is for the comfort of the adult, not because the straps, fabric, buckles can't hold anymore... one picture on their website is a 100lb woman in it!! I still use mine for my 44lb 4 yr old on odd occassions like when we've been at the zoo or the flea market for too long and she's tired, it folds down pretty well and I tuck it at the bottom of my backpack when we're having a big excursion like that.

ETA... for kelty fans - I can't tell, does the child sit in it - like in a real sitting position like the Ergo??

what diaper bag do you recommend?

I want a diaper bag that is functionable? I would like for it to look like a big purse or even a back pack not sure yet. I going to start looking but dont know where to start. Any suggestions?

Answer
It totally depends on how much you want to spend! For my first baby I used a small sized backpack and just stuffed everything in it, I thought it was pretty functional, though not really big. After my daughter was born a friend of mine gave me a Fluvial bag; they are not cheap($120-$160), however I am a huge fan! There are different styles but they all have the appearance of a purse and are quite stylish. They have an exterior that can be easily wiped down and fabulous pockets inside for everything you would need. I will use mine as a purse even after the kids are needing a diaper bag. Another great one, though still on the pricier side($120-ish), is a Go-GaGa. It is more of a messenger bag, but has an amazing strap that you can spread like a wrap over your shoulder to distribute the weight better. the nice thing is you can usually find these on ebay for cheaper than you can in a shop! If you are looking for a less expensive option try Babies'r'us, they have multitudes of styles and brands for a lot less money! Good luck and have fun!

Question for all you moms and dads out there?

JennaH

OK- I was wondering if there is any special things that you think are a must have when shopping for a baby? I know the crib, car seat, stroller, etc. But what other products did you find really helpful?

Where there things you bought or were given that were a complete waste of money? Like a baby robe?

Answer
One gadget that was used all the time was a vaporizer. This gadget sits on a table top, plugs into the wall, gets filled with water and emits a super fine mist of moisture into the air. I found that by adding a cup or so of Listerine to the water, I could kill germs and add moisture to the air at one time. Babies are miserable when they get colds, runny noses etc. This seemed to provide almost instant relief and let the baby sleep better. Any baby that is sleeping better lets the parents sleep better too!

Another good thing to get is a baby monitor... these are walkie talkie type gizmos that let's you put a small transmitter in the babies room and a receiver in the parents room or wherever. You get to hear everything that's going on in that room without havng to make constant checks in person. This gave us all kinds of confidence and the baby didn't have to start crying loudly to get somebody in there.

Still another item is a baby backpack... Strap this thing on, put the baby in it and you can do just about everything you used to be able to do. Babies seem to love being back there, doing things with you, and seeing things from your perspective with the security of seeing you right there with them.

If you really want to see them having fun... get a Johnny Jumper. This thing is a seat connected to a spring that attaches to the top of a door jamb. It's adjusted so the babies/toddler's feet barely touch the floor. When he/she pushes off with their feet the spring assists them up and their weight bounces them back down to their feet which just touch the floor. Hand/eye coordination (in this case, feet/eye coordination) is developed and they will sit there and bounce seemingly forever!

http://www.toysrus.com/search/index.jsp?kwCatId=&kw=jumper&origkw=jumper&f=Taxonomy/TRUS/2255957

A baby gate is a must if you have areas of the house you just don't want the baby to enter. This thing slides open to squeeze into doorjambs or walkways. It is especially convenient to block off things like stairwells to keep a crawling baby from tumbling down the stairs.

http://www.toysrus.com/search/index.jsp?kwCatId=&kw=gate&origkw=gate&f=Taxonomy/TRUS/2255957

A baby walker is a good things too. This is a baby seat mounted iinto a wheeled carriage that has a shelf of sorts in front of the baby. The babies feet stick out below and allow him/her to propel themselves all over the place. The shelf in front let's them have things to play with or their juice cup.

A subscription to Disney Rhyming Readers seemed to provide near endless reading material that both my kids absolutely loved. I must have reread stories from these hundreds of times. Enough so, that I started to make up my own story lines and substitute other rhyming words in place of the story's words. I don't know how we got a subscription to these... I don't even know if they are out of print but the kids loved them and so did we.

These things stick out in my mind after raising two very capable kids to adulthood. One owns and runs his own karate studio since he was sixteen and the other is an Olympic gold medalist swimmer that graduated high school a year early and is attending UC Berkeley on a full scholarship. You are reading words from a very proud dad!

Come to think of it I've never seen the father of the baby push his baby around in a stroller. What's up with that?

Answer
Many fathers do push strollers. But I can tell you as a fairly tall woman that the height of the stroller handles means many of us are hunched over the whole time. It might be quite uncomfortable for men to push a stroller very much. I know men who prefer to carry the baby in a backpack.

What are some of the most effed up things you have caught your dog eating?

cjrossi

I'll start:

disposable razor, electrical wiring, crunched christmas ornaments, eyeglasses, TV remote

and I'd like to say "baby gate doorknob" except I didn't catch him eating it, until he pooped it out whole, after a trip to the vet.

it is amazing - you think you have completely cleared and puppy-proofed an area, and they seem to pull stuff out of thin air!
WOW. This has been enlightening, amusing, and in alot of cases, gross.

Thanks for sharing!

Answer
This particular over sized Boxer mix came out of a drug house in a big city. There was suspicion she had been used as a "test subject" for street drugs. She for sure had ISSUES, a few bolts loose and was a rampant chewer.

Her menu over her lifetime was:

A $100 Scientific Calculator (copped from a backpack)
Jewelry - anything she could steal off my dresser
Rare plant bulbs
A thermometer (that she found in a new house I just moved into - cause I didn't own one)
A 12' tree...chewed off at ground level
Her own poop
Money - paper or coin (anything she could reach on the table, or counter top.
Cat, dog, raccoon, cow and bird poop
Human poop (camping once.. I thought I was gonna die)
Multiple hoses
Parts of a broken light bulb
A "floater" she fished out of the kid's john
A USED feminine napkin *gasp*she snagged out of the weeds (on the side of the road) while on a walk...
My dad's cherished barrel cactus.
My grandson's plastic alligator
Bumble Bees / yellow jackets/ honey bees
Quail

BUT... WHAT ALMOST KILLED HER (besides ME)... was
A 2"x2" redwood rung off my deck railing. She chewed it out one summer day so she could poke her head out of the railing and watching me pull into the driveway. She was in the vets for almost a week being treated for that stunt. She lived...but just barely.

Oddly...she's now pushing 11 yrs old and sleeping on the rug right behind my computer chair. I didn't dare rehome her.. I was afraid someone would take her out and SHOOT HER. It wasn't her fault her brain was fried. Now...she's allllllll gray faced and moves with a hitch in her git-a-long. She still occasionally steals a grocery receipt if she can snag it...but it's more for attention then anything else...LOL *knock on wood*... she has not ruined anything of value in a long time.
.
.ADDED:
You guys mentioning furniture disasters -
A friend of mine went and got an adolescent, very rambunctious Boxer and for what ever BRAIN FART REASON...she left him home alone (.l-o-o-s-e in her house) about a week after she got him. When she got back he had pulled the cushions off her n-e-w couch! Starting on the front...he chewed a whole clear out the BACK of the couch! She called me for sympathy and all I could do was laugh until I cried......rotffffffffffff. Duh x 100...lol What WAS she thinking?
