have been to Hawaii before I always pack to much or not enough, should I buy there, cheap t-shirts? I always take one pair of pants that convert to shorts, 5 pairs of shorts, 7 days underwear, 2 nice shirts, 2 pairs of shoes, we buy our toiletries there, can anyone think of anything else? Oh and buy the way we do laundry while I'm there.

I'm looking at getting a metal framed hiking type back pack. What is the upper weight/age limit to these? Here's the one I'm looking at getting. http://eastidaho.craigslist.org/bab/796313648.html Are these too big for toddlers?

Answer
they only go to 25 pds. Why don't you look at the ERGO carrier, those metal frames are horrible for you back! The ergo is great and comfy I use it all the time

Baby wearing mamas, do they make a carrier for babies over 25 lbs?

Q. My son has a snuggli infant carrier and the weight limit is 25 lbs. I really like wearing him and I would like to keep doing it, but he just hit 23 lbs.

So, do you have any recommendations?

Answer
My Moby Wrap goes to 35lbs, but now that he is about 25lbs he is really starting to get too heavy for it when I do anything other then carry him around the house.

We use an Ergo when we are out and about, though its not the most attractive looking carrier, it gets the job done. It works a lot like a hiking backpack, to distribute the weight.

I had to give up the front carrier when he was around 10lbs because it killed my shoulders.

These 2 items are quite big combined and my backpack is already big enough for me to handle. Is there something that everybody uses to carry the accessories when they go backpacking? Should I get a small side bag to hold my cameras and lenses?

Answer
You could get a sling and have it slung in the front, therefore helping to distribute some of the weight. (Kind of like the baby slings or a big sling purse you can cross over your shoulder/chest). You could also look into something large enough to go around your waist with the bulk in the front of your body. Adding another bag to your back area would not have any benefit and you want to keep your hands free so these are my suggestions. Good luck and have fun! Be safe!

Where can I find a child carrier like this?

Its Okay E

Im trying to find a site where they sell the baby carrier backpacks, they are cloth and usually tan there is no metal frame of anything. Does anyone know where to find one?

Answer
DO NOT GET THE SNUGLI, bjorn, or others like this. They are bad for babies spine and hips, and soon hurt mom's back. Good ones that distribute weight correctly are the Ergo, the Baby Hawk, the Beco and similar brands. You pay much more, but you can comfortably carry a 25 pound 2 year old in these carriers. The good carriers have baby sitting on their bums, the snugli dangles baby from the crotch.
http://www.attachedtobaby.com/Buckle-Carriers-C5.aspx
I have used the Ergo for a 25 pound 2 year old, and I loved my ring sling from this site. I'm now using a Baby Hawk Oh Snap for the 2 yr old, I'm in a baby wearing network in town and we all share slings and carriers.

tell me what the first 3 months of twins is like?

baby backpack twins image

Who am I?

Can someone truthfully tell me what the first 3 months of twins is like? And the first year? Is it crazy and insane always? When do you (and when do they!) settle into the routine? Do you always feel stressed and like there is not enough of you to go around? What about if there is an older sibling to care for as well? Details details, please!!! :-)
And also, at what point can you go out and about and not feel like the effort of packing strollers and diaper bags is not worth the errand?

Answer
Well. my b/g twins will be 3 months next week and it hasn't been to terrible. The first 6-7 weeks were like I was in a fog! Sleep deprivation is a terrible thing! They were eating every hour and one was ALWAYS awake! I took to feeding them in bed with me just so I could grab a few minutes of sleep before the other woke up! About the two month mark they started sleeping about 4 hrs a night and I felt like a new woman! Now they have regulated to where they are mostly awake at the same time though they do have slightly different day time nap schedules and sleep at night at the same time. :)! I have a daughter that is 17 and she and my husband are a big help! All the kids tend to rotate so everyone gets special mommy time. My twins are funny how they do it! One will wake up from their nap about 1/2 hour before the other and my daughter gets me all to herself after my husband has left for work and the twins are down for the night. When we run an errend we just keep them in their car seats. The seats fit right into shopping carts and if we go to the mall we don't take a stroller (even though we leave one in the van) we just strap them into snuggies for our walk. We don't take a big diaper bag with us if we are just running around town-we have a couple of bags that look like backpacks and we just have a few diapers and wipes in them-just enough for a quick change as needed. If we go out of town then we take one of the big bags that have a couple of clothing changes and the med kits and such. As we haven't gotten though the 1st year yet I can't answer that but I hope it stays kinda like it is now! Its so much fun! Our new favorite game is "pass the baby". You get extra points if you can pass a baby with a "special" surprise and make a clean getaway!

How many more times are we going to be told that Obama looks like Trayvon?

GRETA Say

These Black murders were performed under the supervision of Planned Potty Training Spanking in Chicago. Maybe that is why Obama won't comment or put a stop to this murder.

An African American Chicago mom beat her baby son to death with a black leather belt while he was gagged on the toilet for potty training spanking. Then caused a massive search and rescue operation by claiming he'd been kidnapped by three Mexicans, police said.

Lakeshia Baker, 22, is accused - alongside her 21-year-old boyfriend Michael Scott - of killing tiny Bryeon Hunter at their suburban Maywood home on Monday.
Cops claims the one-year-old, whose body has not been found, was gagged as the pair hit him with the belt for potty training spanking.

They then left him on the bathroom floor, until the following day, to die.
Realizing what they'd done, they allegedly decided to bundle the baby's body into a backpack and dump it in the Des Plaines river.
Then, as a cover-up, they reportedly told cops the child had been abducted by three Hispanic men as the pair walked down an alleyway.
Bryeon Hunter, 1, was killed on April 16, 2013.

It sparked a huge search operation, with police hunting for the baby across the city.
Baker even picked three "suspects" out in a police mug book and appeared in news reports asking for her baby to be returned.
But cops didn't believe her story, Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez told CBS Chicago.

She later admitted it was a ruse, saying they themselves had killed the baby, reports the station.
Prosecutors say each of the defendants accuse the other of dumping the body in the river.

Brielle

Sometimes it is only one cheek and it flares up bright red. It is kind o splotchy but no roughness to it...It sometimes occurs when I carry him in the backpack.

Answer
There a lot of factors and more details could help but here's some reasons.

1. excess heat. If he falls asleep with his face against you then he'll get hot. One cheek red. This happens to my daughter when she's in her sling and sleeping.

2. teething. teeth coming in on one side tend to make screaming red, splotchy cheeks that aren't always even.

3. slapped-cheek (fifth diease). very common viral illness in children. It's usually mild. http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Slapped-cheek-syndrome/Pages/Introduction.aspx

Answer
At least $1000. Those upgrades are not cheap at all, and you are tacking a child onto there. If you want a better deal and a more child friendly airline, go with Emirates. I went to Pakistan in October and I absolutely loved this airline. They provide a backpack full of toys and activities, children's movies, and all kinds of entertainment. THey also provide diapers, sippy cups, bottles, milk, and baby sleepers.

What Job Can I Get If I'm 14?

Daniel

I'm 14 years old, I really wanna get started working in New Jersey, Where can I work??

Answer
Look up your state laws. I know here in FL they have limited hours and can't handle cash or prepare food, so most kids get jobs as signholders, or baggers at grocery stores. you can also maybe start your own business if you're responsible....lawn services, baby/pet-sitting, assisting older/very busy people with chores such as grocery shopping/cleaning...if you're creative you could make some sort of product to sell, such as designing t-shirts, backpacks, jewelry or "spirit sandals" to sell to kids you go to school with....

@ Suqarcake- if there's a Winn-Dixie in your area, they hire 14/15 yearolds and you get 2 4-hour shifts on the weekends, and can work if schools not in session, such as school holidays

Can I start a career after having a baby as a single mom?

Danceuse86

I'm 25 years old, with a university degree, speak 4 languages fluently and lots of other qualifications/experience. I have to admitt that I have an impressive resume. Here's the situation though: I've been backpacking through Australia for the past year with my boyfriend, who's from the US (I'm from Canada.) We just found out that I'm pregnant and have decided to keep the baby. I move back to Canada in March, and my baby is due in August. I'll have to use the time in between to find a place to live, and a casual job to hold me over until I can get a real job at some point after the baby's born (I don't want to risk searching before because I'll be so large and that could affect my chances.) I have plenty of savings, so money shouldn't be too much of a concern for a while. The father of the baby is also supportive and will be there financially and so are my friends/family. I'm excited to be a mommy, but am worried that since I'll mainly be raising it alone, it'll be hard for me to kick start a career after the baby comes.
Has anyone else ever started a career under tough circumstances like this one? Any advice/suggestions well appreciated! Thanks. xx

Answer
Can you work online as a translator among your four languages? Working from home would be ideal for you, at least for the next year or so.

You did not mention the kind of career you want. Would it require full-time or even abnormally long work weeks? If so, I hope it pays enough so that you can hire a nanny or daycare.

If you will live in an English speaking part of Canada, maybe you can find a French speaking nanny/daycare (or one speaking an exotic yet useful language like Mandarin or Arabic). If you will live in a French speaking area, you could hire a nanny/daycare speaking either English or one of those exotic languages. That way, the child learns all the languages from the youngest possible age.

When you say you will "mainly be raising it alone", does that mean the father will seldom see the child in person? If so, discuss with your boyfriend having him video chat with his child, like via Skype over the Internet. Virtual interaction is better than a phone call, I'm guessing.

This might seem off-topic, but I think you should speak neither English nor French to your child. I assume that, in Canada, he or she will learn both of those languages via school, television, other kids, maybe a nanny, etc. You could speak one of your other languages to him/her one day, then another language the next day, then switch back to that first language on the third day, then back to that second language on the fourth day, etc. In other words, just endlessly alternate between the two languages from day to day. Your child deserves the multilingual advantage that you have!

To set up yourself and your child for success, you should do some homework. Good parenting requires forethought. Be sure to read plenty of books on parenting, think about what they all say, but don't accept on faith any single thing that a book says.

Here are some random ideas I have:

I wonder whether acting and public speaking lessons would be valuable for an older kid. That would really help his self-presentation, I'm guessing.

Another example: don't just order him to do his school work because it's required. At the start of each semester, look at a list of classes he's taking. Sell him on the value of each course subject - how exactly will it be helpful. You might have to search on Google/whatever for something like "math motivation" to get ideas for how to sell the benefits of a subject. Unfortunately, schools and teachers seldom sell kids on the value of trying to learn what they teach.

When he's old enough, have him try lots of different activities (hobbies; clubs and elective classes at school). Explain the various reasons why each activity is worthwhile:
* Develop skills he can use in life
* Figure out what career he'll probably be good at and excited about
* Be a more interesting person, especially to people who are interested in that activity
* Get practice with difficult technical subjects, to be better prepared when trying to learn them in college or on the job. Some subjects are difficult enough that it will be very helpful to have been exposed to them before and to have a lot of practice.

Some parents only pressure their kids to go to college and then get a particular kind of job; I wonder whether parents should suggest exploring less common alternatives. For instance, it might be good to somehow encourage entrepreneurial thinking, living and working overseas, and whatever other nontraditional paths you can think of. I don't know how to sell kids on those kinds of ideas, but it seems worth trying. I think that preparing for life is even more important than preparing for college.

Still another aspect of leadership is responding to problems that come up. A couple examples:

1) If your child is anxious or has social difficulties, don't just ignore it or give up if you can't figure out how to help. Hire a family counselor or child psychologist.

2) If your child does not understand a particular school subject fully, hire a tutor. Even if he/she currently has an A grade, this might be valuable if homework or tests show wrong answers that he/she cannot explain. This has a side benefit of teaching the child to seek outside academic help when needed, rather than accepting poor performance.

Why is it that when my depression acts up I can't stop thinking about suicide and weird thoughts?

Dawn

I am 38, mother of 4, and 3 step children (all living with me ages 2-17). I have a supportive family, but have been battling depression for almost 20 years if not longer. My dad was an alcoholic vietnam vet so I know I have a touch of secondhand PT SD due to the alcohol and guns. Been to many Dr's. for treatment all to no avail. 2 hospital stays (one due to cutting in depressed state) and other for vicodin addiction (the only thing that ever kept me from being depressed and feeling happy and energetic). Now on Pristiq, adderal xr, and today dr. wants to add wellbutrin (been on it already). I feel so hopeless to the point I wonder if I am actually going crazy. No dr has given me an exact diagnosis..just more pills. Esp, the week before my cycle, is SO bad. I visualize killing myself, think about what I would write in suicide notes to my kids, etc..I cry and get angry. I would never do that to my babies. It feels like my soul is in a constant state of torment and I want to feel better for myself and children. I feel foggy headed half of the time waiting for the next time " I don't feel right"..can anyone relate? I have been to psychiatrists, therapists, Dr's for the last 10 years. I feel I truly am mentally exhausted and the stress of raising these kids with a husband working his butt off just to pay bills is crazy. Sometimes I feel like such a bad mother, a loser, for thinking such bad thoughts but sometimes I can't get them out of my head, esp. at night.
Please don't be mean and leave nasty comments for fun....this is very serious to me. I am in such a bad spot and feel like I can't get out.

Answer
Dawn,
Who wouldn't feel stressed and depressed in your situation? I admire you for accepting such a huge job. Obviously you are a special person, and very loving. Look at the job you accepted! And a big one it is.
Meds can make you fuzzy-headed, adding to your challenge. So, even while you're struggling to make 9 breakfasts, you're walking through molassas with every move. And you fight on. Diapers, sports practice, homework in the backpacks, packing lunches. Breakfast zooms to bedtime while you're still trying to find a moment of sunshine to bask in!
It's hard to see the rainbow when clouds are covering the sky. And you so need to see the sky. Some depression is situational, what my medical doctor calls "life stuff". Some is from brain chemicals -the annoying tiny little amounts of this and that that run from nerve to nerve sometimes kicking the nerve's tires, and sometimes soothing it back to sleep. If only it would do what we want it to do!

My personal recommendations come from my own experience, not from education. Keep talking to counselors. If one isn't good for you, go on to the next one. If you don't like the counselor, or feel like you can relate to him or her, you won't do the work you need to do to find that spot in the sun for your cat nap.

Keep a gratitude journal. Oprah started it, and millions have discovered it's power. At the end of each day you open your journal, write 5 things, no matter how small, that you are grateful for. Review it every so often.

When you are angry or depressed, find something else to focus on. Your children are an excellent thing to think about. You can pick up a book to read to the little ones, or do some art with any of them. Do something wonderful for your husband. These may seem unnaturally selfless, but doing something good for others pays you back with good brain chemicals.

Just when you are feeling so frazzled by endless work, take a walk. Sounds like the last thing you'd need at that moment, but it works. See if you can find another mom who'd like a break on occasion to exchange with. You watch her kids while she takes a quiet, healthy walk. Then she watches yours while you take a quiet, healthy walk.

These stratedgies really do help you feel better. Some take longer than others to get results, but you will get results. Keep your success in mind. When you are feeling morose, tell yourself to stop that, then deliberately think of something positive. It takes practice, but you'll get better with it over time.
If you need someone to talk to when you are feeling down, drop me a line through my profile here at Yahoo! Answers.

Double Stroller Necessary?

TLT

I have a son (pretty well behaved) who turns 3 in September. I am expecting a little girl in the beginning of October.

I was hoping to avoid using the double stroller. The storller I have will take her carseat and has a small stand on the back that my son can stand on.

I was wondering if you (or anyone you know) has kids around these ages and if you use a double stroller or not. Are you glad you choose to (or not to) purchase one?

I was thinking of maybe getting a double umbrella stroller. Do they make them? Have you tried them? Please help and keep in mind I am on a fairly small budget which is why I want to try and make a decision soon so I can save up a bit.

Answer
I was going to get one for my children, since they had about the same age spread as yours, but, about the time my second was born, my oldest decided she wanted to walk. Sure, she threw a fit about the baby having the stroller, but she would only stay in it for 5-10 minutes before she wanted to walk.

I also considered the stand-on strollers, but opted out of these as well because my oldest would outgrow them so quickly.

I ended up using my single stroller, and just kept reminding my oldest that she needed to "help me push" by holding onto the side. When the baby decided, at about 20 months, that she didn't want to ride in the stroller either, or hold my hand, for that matter, I was really glad I didn't go to the expense.

I traded the diaper bag for a backpack, attached ribbon in a loop on both straps, and now they walk with me holding on to the loops, and gave up my stroller. They are both pretty good about not letting go. For longer walks, I use a wagon, where one or the other "helps" me pull it more often than not.

I should add, though, that I am not a big mall goer, or a fitness walker. Our big trips include the zoo and the science museum, which are not nearly as crowded as the typical mall. If you do go to crowded places a lot, you may want to buy one of those backpack harnesses for your son, kinda like a leash, just to make sure he stays close and doesn't get separated for you. The kids I know who have these think they are the coolest thing, because they look just like a stuffed animal backpack.

As to your question about double umbrella strollers, they do make them, but they are really hard to find. When I was looking, they cost a pretty penny, but not as much as a typical double stroller. The reviews I read made it sound like they don't handle as well, and they might be too little for your son.

Why do African Americans where those childish backpacks with Spiderman, Dora the explorer, etc?

Lucifer

There are lots of them at my school, I was wondering why they wear such baby backpacks?

Answer
I've never seen any black people where I live doing that. Maybe just a silly trend in your town. I remember back in the 90's they hung pacifiers around their necks and I thought it was ridiculous. But I think every race and person makes a bad fashion choice at one point or the next. You grow up and you change.

Maybe you should go up to one of them and ask. Let me know -lol

Here's a thought, I know when I was in school, some kids thought it was too dorky to carry their backpacks or folders around, so they'd bring those flimsy pee-chee folders and roll them up. Maybe they think that by wearing childish backpacks it's kind of the same thing. Like if you have to carry a bunch of books around, might as well make a joke out of it. Like "I don't need to wear a big backpack because I'm not a nerd, so instead I'll wear this kid's backpack because I don't take school serious"

Things to do with a 14 month old baby in Hawaii?

Sandy C

We're traveling to Hawaii in April with our baby girl who will be 14 months. We're going to all the islands and I don't know what activities we'll really be able to do while there. We live in Miami so the beach isn't the main attraction for us. I purchased a baby carrier/backpack and an all terrain stroller to get around. Is there any hiking to do with a tough stroller? Carrying the baby for a month on our backs will not be easy. Any suggestions?

Answer
There are some easy hikes on Oahu that might be doable with a heavy duty stroller, boomer gal has one idea. Thereis also Koko Head (by Hawaii Kai) and Makiki Valley (which is wide enough as it is used every day heavily). Also Diamond Head is doable (not the rougher areas). There is a Children's Discovery Center nearer to downtown that would be fun and it features Hawaiana. There is also the Bishop Museum which might be interesting for a child.

Christmas Gift ideas for a 2 year old girl?

I want to get a present for my boyfriends two year old daughter, but I can't think of anything? She likes baby dolls, but she has alot of them already so that's thrown out. She also likes blankets, big legos, and stuffed animals. Got any ideas?

Answer
A two-year old will really, truly, not get the idea, or be pleased, if they get a gift on Christmas. It's really just another day to them. Which is totally why everyone gets toddlers an insane amount of gifts every year, which is nonsense, but that's just my opinion. And yes, I'm a jealous teenager.

Anyways.
If they throw something out a lot, don't get it.
I suggest you get a gift basket for her. A cute one too, so she can carry her things around. Throw in the blankets, legos, stuffed animals, pillows, and might as well get a couple small dolls for her while you're at it.

Sounds pricey? Not that much. I've seen tons of places that set out handmade gift baskets - already wrapped, too - around this time with all that jazz for only twenty bucks.

The stuffed animals, in my experience, toddlers and babies like ones that are just the right size for them, so it's big enough to hug and carry, but small enough so that it's not towering over the little one. Several small plush often overwhelm the child - get a nice big one, and if you insist on smaller ones, give them to your boyfriend to hide. When the time comes, and she's not co-operating or whatever, take it out to bribe them with.

I agree with one of the others on the animal pillow/plush. They come in penguins, lady bugs, dolphins, polar bears, every other animal you can think of, and I've seen them at the mall, in one of those carts. Where I live, they're thirty bucks, but they're really cute and squishy. A two-year old might not get it though.

You can get a blanket customized for her. Choose your color, fabric. Or bring in one of your old ones, and get them to embroider her name, with some cute pictures. Toddlers tend to like pictures that are all over, or running down the sides, instead of just in one corner. Spread the love, you know?

My little brother - he's two - LOVED his Pooh-bear backpack that he got for his birthday. We're training him for daycare soon, and every morning, he sees me carrying mine my backpack to school, so he was super physicked when he got one. Pack it up with some toys, and maybe a sticker book. It's much more efficient and toddler-friendly than a gift basket. He'll have a sort "friend" in the backpack when he starts school, and whatnot. It doesn't even need to be jazzy. My cousins was like a design made ten years ago, with dark colors, and only a Winnie and Tigger on the front. He still carries it around, and it's a month since he got it. That's a pretty long life-span for a child's play toys.

Hope I helped!

What should I keep in my backpack at school ?

Roxy Marty

I got all the school stuff , I just wanna no what to keep in " girl emergencies " hahaha well yes so like pads , travel size perfume , chap stick , and what for make up ? Thank you lots <33

Answer
This is what I carried ever since I was in high school

-mirror
-wipes
-lip gloss /chap stick
-small deodorant- you never know, maybe you're stressed for the work, gym class, or you have a nerve rush for your presentation
-baby wipes- in case the deodorant fails you wipe before reapplying, or if you have a certain smell down there
- a pad-
eyeliner-
- blush-
-aspirin- headaches or certain pains
-allergy pills- if you need them
-nail filer- call me crazy but when i was doing manual projects and had a little crack on my nail it really bugged me, so i would file it for few seconds just to smooth it off and finish it at home
-hand sanitizer-
-small comb-
-small bottle of hair spray
hair ties and bobby pins
-body spray
-lotion

I would need some tips and advice as to how to keep him occupied in ONE spot while I do my ticketing, go through security, and wait until boarding time. He will not stay in his stroller for long
He is 28 pounds. Should I rather use a baby carrier?

Answer
The best way to go about it would be to bring him lots of entertainment. Books, toys, markers and paper, etc. If you put him in a stroller but he has things to do he should be able to sit there, plus you'd be able to keep track of him easily. But like someone else suggested, you could also get one of those "leashes" which are really just backpacks for the child with a string and handle attached. Here are some inexpensive ones: http://www.walmart.com/search/search-ng.do?search_query=Child%20Leashes&adid=22222222220018687822&wmlspartner=wmtlabs&wl0=b&wl1=g&wl2=&wl3=14210570032&wl4=That way you could keep track of him and he could keep his entertainment in the backpack. And ignore the people who comment that it's "wrong"...it's just a way to keep track of your child! It's not like just because you have one you'll treat them like a dog!

Good luck :)

Ergo baby carrier vs. babyhawk mei tai?

baby backpack baby carriers reviews

baby backpack baby carriers reviews image

Anna

I don't really like the backpack look of the ergo, and the mei tai looks more appealing to me, which one is more comfortable? do you recommend one over the other?

thanks

Answer
Ooh - tricky one! Some mums like one or other, some like either.
I like the Ergo because the buckles make it quick to put on, no long straps to drag on wet winter ground while tying (though tucking straps MT straps into your belt works while putting it on), padded waist helps transfer weight onto the hips so likely to be able to carry for longer (eg. 3-4 years old).

Babyhawk - lots of colourful options, more curvy mums often find them more comfotable with no buckles to dig into large boobs, pack up smaller due to less rigis waist.

Resale value is great on both slings so if you feel you've gone with the wrong one you'll recoup your money OK.

Perhaps check out if you have any sling enthusiasts locally so you can try them both on, or maybe a local sling lending library to try before you buy. Check out the link - might ne of help - certainly reviews somewhere on the site.

Can anyone recomend a baby carrier, sling, or wrap? ?

mrs.russel

I am about to have my second baby and I will have two kids under the age of two so I'm thinking I will need a baby sling or something. With my first son I used the snugli carrier, it was okay but I would prefer something else that is more comfortable. I've been looking at those baby slings that look like little shells that rest on the side of your hip, but I have gotten mixed reviews on that. Some women say it's great to have, some say they are terribly uncomfortable. I've also seen some type of wraps lately and have been wondering about those. Can anyone recomend any of these through experience? Thanks

Answer
I have a "hotsling", a "new native carrier", a "baby bjyorn" and the "infantino sling rider"... here's what i have to say about them

the hotsling... i like the best. my son is 5 months old and i use it to carry him on my hip. when he was smaller (he's 22 lbs now) i used the other carries, and was able to nurse him while chasing after (well not running, but able to move while nursing) a 2 and 3 year old.

the new native carrier... mine never fit right, when he was little, but i can still use it for the hip carry. i like the strechyness of the hotsling better.

baby bjoirn... i assume is similar to your snugli but it hurts my back too much except for when he was like 10 lbs. my son got too heavy to ever really wear facing forwards comfortably, but i could see it being great.

infantino sling rider... worked well for when he was under 18 lbs and sleeping, he never liked it awake

the type of carrier, i have looked into (and the only one i registered for at my shower) was a mei tai carrier... which i think i would have like best, and still might pick it up, if i don't find a good framed backpack reasonably.

I have one of those backpack like things that the baby sits in front of you or in the back. My son is 7 1/2 weeks old and only like to be carried outward. When do you think is too soon to face him forward in the back pack?

Answer
You can forward face them in a front-pack from about 2-3 months when they have sufficient head control.

You shouldn't put them in a back-pack carrier until they can sit well assisted. The reason is that you can't really keep an eye on them.

I would like to travel soon with my 7 week old baby to Canada so he can see his grandparents. This will be a 22 hr flight via airplane! How soon can I travel and how I carry him with me conveniently? car seat, stroller what kind, backpack carrier? Anyone tried travelling w a newborn- can u give me tips

Answer
Oh wow i will be travelling from Canada hopefully within a week so her grandparents can see her and that will 22 hours of flight too but the difference is she will 4 months actually i wanted to go since she was 1 month but passport took some time. well the advices i got and after searching on different websites i came to know that:
When you get your tickets just ask them if there is anyway they can give you the seat where you can hook a bassinet up for the baby.
Take lots of diapers, pacifier, wipes, 2 to 3 change of cloths,
Make sure you take a soft blanket of your lill one.
Please don't drug the baby with Benadryl it can create more problem for you because sometimes babies get cranky.
Just make sure that u are feeding the kid (either bottle or breast feed) at the time of take off and landing so that he/she isn't cranky due to air pressure.
Btw dont worry your baby will be sleeping most of the time :)
Good luck!

What should I bring backpacking that won't be on my list?

Cinderella

I'm going on a two week backpacking trip through a ymca camp in minnesota and was wondering, is there anything that I should bring that isn't on the :basic need" list? Or any tips for a first timer?

Answer
Just remember that you'll be carrying all of your gear for 2 weeks. Seriously. Every ounce counts, so think really really really hard about everything that you are bringing. Anything that can do double (or triple) duty is a plus.

Some backpackers will even go as far as snipping off the end of their toothbrush and brush in order to save on some weight.

Break in your boots now if they are newer. Blisters are awful on the trail. A travel pack of baby wipes are great for a little personal cleanliness.

What is a good baby sling that is comfortable and causes minimal back pain?

Chiro

I am looking for a good quality and hopefully cute baby sling for a baby shower gift. I really don't want to spend more than $100.

Answer
Personally, I like the Over the Shoulder Baby Holder (OTSBH). It comes in a lot of fabrics and several sizes (based on the size of the adult, not the baby--it can be worn as long as the baby is carried). But mostly, I like it because it is so good for my back.

I have always had back problems, but when I bought my first OTSBH, I had been carrying my child in an aluminum frame backpack. My back and neck were so sore that I could turn my head from side to side more than a tiny bit. I bought the OTSBH in desperation. Wearing my child (then 1 1/2) in it for many hours a day actually *healed* my sore back!! Two days later, I had full movement back (other times when I've had the same problem it took months and repeated therapeutic massage).

A sling is better than other kinds of baby carriers because they are more flexible. A baby can lie down in front of you in at least 2 different positions, and it supports her/his back perfectly. When they're a little older, they can sit in front of you, facing outwards with you supporting the back and head. And a toddler can sit on your hip or back.

I'm sure most brands of slings are similar; the important thing is that a sling is worn with the fabric spread out along the entire back and baby's weight is also supported on the hip and opposite shoulder. So it supports the back and spreads the weight evenly on the parent's upper body. But the OTSBH is also better (in my opinion) because it has padding (along both long sides and on the parent's shoulder), and is adjustable. Some slings are sewn closed and cannot be adjusted; this means you need a different one for each parent, and it makes it harder to get it on and off. And the padding makes it more comfortable on the wearer's shoulder, and makes me feel more sure that the baby can't fall out the side (although I'm sure the unpadded ones are safe--it just *feels* safer). Unpadded slings have the advantage of taking less room to pack up, but I'll keep the comfort and skip the ease of packing.

They retail for about $45 and are widely available on baby stores on the Web. I think all slings are in the same price range.

Would the Lesportsac Voyager Backpack be suitable for highschool?

Tiffany

I really love the style of the backpack and I've been told that it's roomy enough for books and binders but I want to know if it will last and if it's worth the price. I really need help with this before school starts In August. Thanks.

Answer
I think that backpack is fine for travel or even as a baby bag, but to use everyday and hauling textbooks and notebooks, I don't think it will last. The material is not that durable to withstand sharp corners of hardbound books and notebooks over time. I would stick to a backpack made with either a heavy weight canvas or denier cordura fabric.

I have a very active 15month old daughter. She likes to grab objects and destroy them. She is difficult to bring to a store. Yesterday, I had to hold her while shopping in hardware stores because she insisted on opening packages or bottles if I let her down. The shopping carts can be very dirty in a hardware store.

Does anyone use a backpack baby carrier for their toddlers for shopping? I don't do much hiking, and I use a stroller to take her on walks. So I would just use it to take her where I don't want her to run around.

Is it safe to get into? Is there a risk of dropping her while putting the backpack on? Any other uses for this? Any suggestions for brands? I heard Tough Traveler is good. Thanks.

Answer
I love my backpack for shopping, and I can still carry my soon to be 3 year old. This is the one I have http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441776409&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302735239&bmUID=1160421939450 . We bought it almost 5 years ago when our oldest was the right size for it. It still looks brand new. I used it for shopping and long walks, my husband uses it for hiking. Have fun!

what is the best baby carrier for a 9month old baby?

Carla

I am thinking buying A BABY carrier for my 9 month old, thinking of using it for awhile. What is the best one out there?

Answer
Ergo.

it's a soft front or back pack...the newer model can also be used on the hip.

it is ergonomically designed for the wearer and the rider.

wearer - wears like a back pack, sternum belt, wide shoulder straps, thick lumbar supportive waist strap.

rider - baby sits in a more natural position where his/her weight is distributed across the butt and thighs... does not hang by the crotch like bjorns/snuggli type carriers

it goes up to 40lbs... though that recommendation is for the comfort of the adult, not because the straps, fabric, buckles can't hold anymore... one picture on their website is a 100lb woman in it!! I still use mine for my 44lb 4 yr old on odd occassions like when we've been at the zoo or the flea market for too long and she's tired, it folds down pretty well and I tuck it at the bottom of my backpack when we're having a big excursion like that.
http://www.ergobabycarrier.com/

ETA... for kelty fans - I can't tell, does the child sit in it - like in a real sitting position like the Ergo??
