Why do I get so hot when i carry a baby?

Hello :)
every time i carry or hold a baby i get 100 degrees and
I just want to get away from the kid, also every kid
i carry or hold weights like a 15 pounds!! heavy!!
I just wanna get him/her away from me...
whats wrong with me?

Answer
Babies tend to be little furnaces. My husband also gets sweaty when he holds babies. For me, they are nice little portable heaters, but I run cold.

As for the weight, it's not that heavy, but babies are balanced differently than a backpack or a bag of flour. Plus they squirm more.

If you don't want to hold babies, don't hold them. Or ask the parent if you can hold them for five minutes because you have to go to the bathroom really badly. That way, you can hand them back without feeling pressured. Or just be honest and say "I feel awkward holding your baby. Can I give him back?"

Good luck!

What stores in the mall sell baby phat clothes?

mattnniki6

I usually get my baby phat clothes online (on their website), but I have heard that there are other places to get baby phat clothes for cheap. Does anyone know of these places? is the mall one? and where else.

Answer
Girl, here's what I do.... Go to Burlington if you have one where you live. Burlington sells Baby Phat Jeans for less than 54.00 a piece, sometimes only 34.00 a piece. Also, all their shirts and hoodies are under 40.00. Their jackets are about 119.00 a piece. The only downside to them is that they don't have a very large selection, (like maybe only 5-10 different styles of shirts and 5 different styles of jeans and a few capris) but the money you save when you find something you love is outstanding! You also can get purses and those little backpack things with prices ranging from 19.99 to 64.00. They got belts too sometimes. I love Burlington so much. They also have other types of name brand stuff, like G-Unit, Rocawear, Enyce, etc. I hope this helps. I also order offline, cause Baby Phat is the majority of what I wear, but it's so easy to burn 200.00 on just like.... three things. Try Burlington. As far as Macy's goes, I've never known Macy's to sell ANYTHING Baby Phat, and I used to shop at Macy's quite often. Oh yeah! Try TJ Max. They mostly have purses for under 50.00, but sometimes you'l come across some really cute shirts or jeans for under 40.00! The shirts will be like 19.99! I hope this helps.

Get a good soft structured or unstructured backpack carrier. This is normal at her age. there is no way to teach her to not want to be carried, you have to feed her needs.

what to buy for my baby?

natalia m

This is my first child and i have 4 months to go. and i dont know what to buy and where to start please help me.

Answer
Two absolute NECESSITIES, from my experience with my six babies:

*Start with a NEW carseat-- don't accept a used one unless you can be 100% sure of its past; that it's never been in an accident of any sort (even fender benders), never been dropped, etc. Also, carseats expire after about 5-6 years (read each seat's manual to check), after which time the harness may not be reliable, especially after years of drool/spitup/juice spills/etc. weakening the fibers. The plastics in the frame can also break down, have structural weaknesses not visible to the eye, etc. If the seat has been stored in a shed or garage, with large variations in heat and cold, dryness and dampness, it could be even more unreliable. So please, if there's any way you can afford it, buy a NEW carseat, and check the manufacture date on the box and seat itself for a recent one, so you don't waste money on a carseat that's been sitting on the shelf already for 2 years. For more info, go to http://www.car-seat.org . This a great website for car safety info and suggestions on buying the right carseat for your needs. :)

*a good, comfortable baby carrier, such as a sling-style carrier, mei-tai, or wrap-style:

http://www.carryingaway.com.au/Default.asp?Redirected=Y

(A website with lots of info on different style carriers, it can help you figure out which one fits your needs best.) Wearning your baby during the early months is a great way to meet baby's needs for closeness & frequent nursing, while enhancing bonding and allowing mom the freedom to accomplish more than just baby care. :) A good carrier, IMO, is THE essestial piece of baby equipment, because you are going to spend an unbelievable amount of time over the next two years with a baby in your arms! ;)

After that, the necessities are pretty simple:

*diapers, either cloth or disposable, or both if you want to give both a try; wipes, either commercial ones, or plain soft cloths you can wet with plain water and/or a homemade gentle cleansing solution (search online for "homemade wipes solution" if interested)

*a foam pad or mesh "bouncy chair-like" seat for tub baths (infant baths are pretty much useless IME)

*clothes appropriate for the season; snap-crotch tees (onesie style), light socks, sweater, lightweight pants outfits, shorts or dresses, sun hat, diaper/swimsuit if you plan on swimming/water play, caps for indoors in A/C, etc. You don't need nearly as much as the books say-- maybe 5-6 onesies, 6-8 daytime outfits, 4-6 pj's, etc. Do buy lots of socks though because they seem to disappear easily.... ??

*burp cloths, which can be as simple as you like (plain white diapers) or as fancy, but anything absorbent will do.

*lightweight blanket to cover the carseat and offer shade from the sun, while in the car, or walking through parking lots, etc.

*about 4-6 receiving blankets for swaddling during the newborn stage

*baby nail clippers-- they are much safer & gentler on soft baby nails than adult clippers

*bulb syringe (nose sucker)-- the hospital will probably give you the one they use on your baby in the hospital, so don't go buy one until you're sure you need it.

*a sturdy bag to use as a diaper bag, whether it's specialized for babies and diapers, or simply a great bag that will hold up to a lot of abuse and wear & tear. My all-time favorite was a cheap $10 black leather backpack I picked up at Walgreen's on sale. It had a huge main compartment for diapers, wipes, & change of clothes, and several smaller pockets & pouches for the other baby care items I always kept on-hand.

Almost everything else can wait until after baby arrives, and you settle in and see what you really need, what you'll actually use, and then cross of the list all of those extra non-essentials that the rest of the world seems to be unable to live or raise a baby without, such as a crib, bassinett, playpen, swing, bouncy/vibrating/musical seat, stroller....

Our crib became obsolete when we decided early on that the baby would sleep in bed with us. A bassinett was useful occasionally to have someplace moveable to put the baby for naps, and could move it room to room, but I can't say whether we used it enough to make it worth the $$. Same with swings, playpens, baby seats, etc. They came in handy sometimes, especially with the babies who seemed to be more fussy than others (you can't hold them 24/7 after all), but they definitely were NOT something I would worry about spending money on *before* baby arrives. Once baby is here, you can get to know him/her, see what their personality is like, how high the baby's needs are for holding & comfort, etc. Then you can decide which of these accessories you really need. Maybe even borrow one from someone else to try out first before wasting $$ on something the baby doesn't even like.

I'm pretty much a minimalist; I don't believe in a lot of the bells & whistles that are on the market for babies these days, although some of them have their place and can come in handy. I would rather give my babies human contact & interaction, to stimulate them myself rather than have mobiles and blinky-light noisemakers do it instead.

Please also consider breastfeeding; not only will it save you tons of $$ on bottle paraphernalia, not to mention the formula itself, but I'm sure you already know that it is the healthiest thing for both you & baby as well. :) If you are interested, you should know that the best way to ensure that breastfeeding goes well is to educate yourself as much as possible before the birth, and to get a support system in place ahead of time so you can feel comfortable calling someone for help/support once your baby arrives. It's a lot easier to call someone you've met & have gotten to know to ask your nursing questions, than to decide to pick up the phone and call a complete stranger once things have *really* gotten bad. La Leche League meetings offer a wonderful opportunity for both-- information/education *plus* a support system. You can locate a LLL group/leader near you by either calling 1-800-LA LECHE, or checking their website here:

http://www.llli.org/webindex.html

Congratulations and best of luck! I hope this has been helpful to you!

Things to do with a 14 month old baby in Hawaii?

Sandy C

We're traveling to Hawaii in April with our baby girl who will be 14 months. We're going to all the islands and I don't know what activities we'll really be able to do while there. We live in Miami so the beach isn't the main attraction for us. I purchased a baby carrier/backpack and an all terrain stroller to get around. Is there any hiking to do with a tough stroller? Carrying the baby for a month on our backs will not be easy. Any suggestions?

Answer
There are some easy hikes on Oahu that might be doable with a heavy duty stroller, boomer gal has one idea. Thereis also Koko Head (by Hawaii Kai) and Makiki Valley (which is wide enough as it is used every day heavily). Also Diamond Head is doable (not the rougher areas). There is a Children's Discovery Center nearer to downtown that would be fun and it features Hawaiana. There is also the Bishop Museum which might be interesting for a child.

How to be a classroom mom while still having an infant at home? How do I go about volunteering, any suggestion?

I love to participate in my child's school, and her teacher wants me (and I also want) to be room mom, but I explained how I am "limited" on what I can do since I have an 8 month old as well to take care of, (I breastfeed to, so having him on a schedule isn't an option). My child's also in 1st grade..Any suggestions to be really involved? thanks!

Answer
Bring your baby along in a sling.

My breastfed babies have been so portable! When they're that young, they're not yet into things. I have taken them everywhere with me at that age, either in my sling or in my Ergo backpack carrier. When they fussed, I simply nursed them.

There's no need to pub your baby on a schedule. You are wise to realize this. (Can an 8-month-old tell time? No. They need what they need when they need it.) There's also no need to express milk and leave the baby.

I'm a bit of a germ freak. Someone mentioned not taking your baby at all because of germs, but there are things you can do. Hold your baby in your arms or a carrier. Set a ground rule about children not touching your baby's hands or mouth, and you're all set. Besides, if there's something out there, your older child is bringing it home from school anyway. And what a bonus that your milk is protecting your baby with your immunities!

I have two: baby-talking to their kids (high-pitched voice is fine.... blabbering like an idiot to them isn't) and telling me how to parent.

Answer
I'm probably gonna get a lot of thumbs down for this...

But my number one would be a baby with a bottle of formula crammed in it's mouth... Makes me sick to my stomach!

Parents who use those stupid backpack leashes

Moms who have really sad and distant looking kids and the moms are "perfect" with salon hair and long fake nails. And you and clearly tell they pay no attantion to their kids

Moms who force 2 and 3 year olds to walk every where and would rather yell at them to hurry up than just pick them up.

and parents who completely ignore their kids who are wreaking what ever establishment they are in.

Sorry I have a lot. Bad parents rrrreally get under my skin...

How do I train my dog to not chew/eat everything in the house?

Artemis

I am also experiencing difficulties with getting the dog to poop outside. She pees outside just fine, but she won't ever poo outside, it always has to be inside.

The bigger problem is that she chews everything. Even her leashes. She is swallowing the little pieces and its causing her to get sick and throw up. We try our best to keep things out of her reach but she chews EVERYTHING!

Help!

**She is a nine month old female Shiba Inu mixed with a Chihuahua. We recently adopted her.

Answer
There are a couple of strategies (that you can use in tandem).

1. Get Bitter Apple spray. Dogs hate the taste of it. It's alcohol-based, won't stain and wears off in a few hours. Spray it on a shoe or purse and your don't won't touch it.

2. Treat your dog like a little kid. You wouldn't leave marbles or jacks on the floor if you had a baby--the baby would put them in his mouth and swallow them. Well, keep the stuff that your dog shouldn't chew out of reach. Shoes go in the closet and close it. Hang things up. Yeah, it's a nuisance but it means the dog doesn't develop a taste for shoes.

3. A bored dog resorts to chewing. So do a couple of things. Give that dog a workout. Lots of walks. Go jogging or roller blading with your dog. Put a doggie backpack on your dog to have them carry a bit more weight on a walk. Do performance sports (agility, flyball, weight pulls, rally-o). Take classes. Train your dog a new trick every couple of days (mental stimulation is also important). A dog that gets a workout and mental challenges is a dog that doesn't engage in destructive behavior. A tired dog is a good dog. A mentally stimulated dog is a content dog. Exercise tires the dog. Tricks, activities or a job of some sort stimulates the dog mentally. A bored or restless dog will engage in destructive behavior (chewing things he shouldn't, shredding toilet paper, emptying waste baskets, trying to get up on tables).

4. Give your dog lots of good things to chew: rawhides of various sizes and shapes, greenies, Kongs stuffed with peanut butter, beef marrow bones, rope toys. We have a dog that loves to chew but he never chews stuff he shouldn't--he's always got something that is okay for him to chew on available so he's not tempted to go for shoes, pursues or other similar items.

we're going to be camping in Colorado for a family vacation with my husbands siblings/dad/etc...there will be a 14 month old and my baby who is 3 months...what are some ideas for activities?

Answer
14 mo old - We bought a child carrier backpack for my first son and that sures makes nature oriented stuff easier. My son loved the pack, and so if we went on a hike he just road along in the pack, the sites alone will keep them entertained for the most part.

At 3 months you can get a front carrier, and tote that one along.

Wherever you camp, scout out the area very well before you let the 14 mo old wander around, make sure there are not any dangerous critters or bushes or whatnot. Have a big tent so they can also just use the tent as a playarea.

Buy a few new toys (don't go overboard) and give them a new toy when you first get there, when they bore of that one, give them another new toy.... depends on the attention span of your child how long this will or if it will work at all. (my 16 mo old this would never work, his attention span is like 3 minutes.)

Does anyone have any more feedback on car seats and strollers?

Kelty Kids has a backpack convertable stroller that is nice to use if you encounter stairs. My combi drags behind from my right hand, with my child flexed tightly in my left arm whenever there is no elevator around. The Kelty is 8lbs and around $125 -200 depending on the model you get from Sportsman Warehouse. There are businesses that will match prices in the area, such as Alpine Experience. I'm ready to advance to this type of system since I'm more active now six months post childbirth and this will allow me to go hiking. My Combi stroller/car seat was about $300, but came with a well-constructed car seat that easily came in and out of the base, which remained stationary in the car. This could easily be removed from the car and placed in my stroller in minutes.

Answer
If you can use it as a car seat and a stroller you are saving time and money.
Consider some other models that you can find in this article about the best baby strollers.

Best food to travel with that don't need refrigeration?

laurie0802

We are going on a short vacation and my son isn't a great eater. Does well with PB&J, chicken nuggets and milk. What is easy to pack that we can throw in a backpack to feed him, instead of paying the high prices for food that he won't eat? We have the milk covered with the drink boxed milk, but what else can we do for food?

Answer
bring some peanut butter..then maybe see if you can get those little jelly packets that they have on the table at restaurants that don't have to be refridgerated (small enough so you throw it away after opening) and some bread...you can make his fave sandwich...

also maybe those peanut butter granola bars? or any type of granola bar...some fruits like apples etc...?

and snack stuff like pretzals, chips...also if you go to the baby food aisle they have some snack things that are like granola bars but are supplemental with vitamins...and maybe some pediasure for older kids...kinda like a milkshake with nutrients..

hope this helps

Hi all...I am in my third trimester. I am going to register baby items at Babies r us this weekend. This is my first baby and I am not sure which items and brands should I pick is safe and comfortble for my baby and pricewise reasonable too. Please give me the review about the baby items and items I do need must. Thank you all.
Thank you all ....for sparing your precious time and giving me lots of information in detail. I am new in this country and first time mom. So, not much idea how to choose the right baby items. But your patience and support helped me alot to select the right things for my baby too instead of wasting money. I am going to print out all those information and check out those items in the store. Once again thank you.

Answer
I highly suggest taking a (relatively) new mom with you to register. My sister (who had a 2 year old at the time) went with me to register and she was a HUGE Help.

Here are a few suggestions.

There has been a lot of press recently about car seats so I'm sure you can google which ones are safest. The one that sticks in my head (b/c it's the one we have) is Graco Snug and ride. I would recomend getting a Snap and Go base so that you can turn the carseat into a stoller.

The crib is totally a matter of taste. We chose the Da Vinci Roxanne because I liked that it could transition into a toddler bed and I liked that it had a drawer under it.

If you get a changing table, make sure it has safety straps (so that baby can't roll off it). We choose the Da Vinci Roxanne changing table dresser combo.

Actually.... I still have my list that has prices and brands that I wanted. I can paste it here -- sorry.... it's going to be long.

Furniture
â Crib â (Da Vinci Roxanne with drawer and conversion kit) $260
â Mattress for Crib â
â Fitted sheets for crib (jersey knit) â 2-3 $10 each
â Ultimate Crib Sheet 2-3 (an all-in-one waterproof mattress protector/cover/sheet) $18 each
â Waterproof mattress pad/lap pad â 2-3 $10-20 each
â Dresser/ Changing table combo (Da Vinci Roxanne 3 drawer Baby Changer with safety strap) $240
â Changing pad & pad covers â 3 covers $10-15 each cover/$23 for pad
â Glider chair (Storkcraft sleigh glider â Cherry wood/beige cushion) $199
â Ottoman for glider (storkcraft) $70
â Hanging bookshelf (idea to hand shelf 12â to 18â below the ceiling around room to add lots of display and storage space)

Room Accessories
â Crib mobile (electric â the wind up ones stop to fast) Be careful what you pick out b/c all mobiles will not work with Da Vinci crib $40-$50
â Video Monitor (Summer infant Products: Day and Night Video handheld monitor) $170
â Baskets (for odds and ends â blankets, cloths, dirty laundry) $20+

Traveling With Baby
â Infant car seat with detachable base (MoTH recommends Graco Infant Snug-ride) $100 for seat $40 for x-tra base
â Stroller (Car seat stroller frame) with zip up blanket(???) MoTH recommends Snap and Go frame for stroller $60
â MoTH also recommends Bugaboo Frog â too expensive
â Baby jogger (MoTH recommends City Series â yikes expensive)
â Front carrier (bjorn - wrap is more comfy)
â Baby back pack (for when baby is older & no longer in bjorn Justine offered hers)
â Pack N Play $100

Playing With Baby
â Activity gym $40
â Bouncy Seat/exercauser (Baby Bjorn Baby Sitter) $100

Clothes
â Onesies â 3 packs $10 per 5-pack
â Long sleeved onesies
â Pjs with feet (zipper is easiest)
â Halo Newborn Sleepsack with swaddling feature $20 OR Swaddleme Fleece Wrap $10
â Sleepsack â 2 $20
â Socks â 6 pairs
â Terry cloth bibs â 3

â Baby towels $15
â Baby Manicure set >$5
â Alcohol swabs >$5
â Q-tips >$5
â Cotton balls >$5
â Desitin >$10 ?
â Organizer for changing table $15 + - (Maybe either get a basket or hanging Koala organizer â maybe get both)
â Cloth diapers (for clean-up rags/changing table) â 4 $12 for pack of 12
â Diaper bag/baby sherpa backpack $25+ Look at the Koala Black Messenger back with pink accent/ Eddie Bauer and plain black messenger
â Diapers â donât get too many til know what he likes â we used pampers swadlers
â Vaseline & gauze pads
â Wet wipes
â Baby Tylenol
â Thermometer (rectal) >$10

Nursing and Feeding
â Nursing bras (no underwire) â 4
üBoppy
ü Breast pump (Medela Pump N Style)
â Receiving blankets â 2 $10-15 for a 4-pack
â Nursing pads (100% cotton â machine washable are better than disposable)
â 6 bottles (don't bother with bottle warmer)
â Silicone nipples, infant size â 2
â Pacifiers
â Bottle brush to clean
â Formula (Enfamil; Similac with Iron) -- nice to have on hand even if you plan on breastfeeding
â High chair â get the booster seat with tray that you attach to chair â takes us less space. Also suggested by MoTHs â and all plastic or wood/ NO cloth. $15-$25

Strollers are making me go insane?

FunkyMonke

So i have a high risk pregnancy and an overly cautious and slightly superstious husband, so i am 23 weeks and i have bought NOTHING... this however has been replaced by EXCESSIVE amounts of research on baby stuff, every freaking baby object you can imagine i have went nuts on reading reviews of, especially strollers. I have read so many blogs, seen so many pictures, i am literally obssessed with this stroller thing, i even read the reviews of European websites and i use a translator sometimes! I thought I had it figured out and settled on the Quinny Buzz + bassinet + Maxi-Cosi-Mico car seat, but then i realized the maxi cosi only lasts to 20 pounds and my friends baby is 22 pounds at 4 months! THen i saw the PEG PEREGO SKATE, and now i think i want that stroller instead. I was obssessed with the Stokke Explorey before i saw the Quinny in the store. I never liked the bugaboo b/c of it folds in two pieces. SO now i am just becoming super confused!!!!!!! What should i do? what stroller do i get? I am getting it later but i want to decide on it now? Please do not tell me i am insane for spending a lot of money on a stroller, i know it is excessive but when i went to Babies R US to look at the basic things like Graco and Evenflo I almost cried. They do not compare, and i do not want to buy another stroller in a year because those fell apart. I live in the city, the stroller has to be sturdy, i do not go on public transport pretty much ever , I do not use a car often, only with my husband (its a stick, i dont know how to drive it) ..... i want a stroller that is forward and rare facing and i want something that will last until child 1 is 4 and then through any other children i will have.
umm the stuff at babies r us sucked. They do not have the same stuff as they do online. They do not have stokke in stores or even bugaboo, atleast not the store i went to
Unfortuanatley i am in the US. The stroller options availabe in Europe just do not compare to anything we have here. The best strollers here are imported from EU, and only few are imported. You guys have the Joolz Bloom out recently, i can not even look at it as no store has it.

Answer
Wow!! You sound like me! I read some of your post to my husband, and he was cracking up because it sounds so similar. I have a huge spreadsheet comparing widths, weights, folds, etc. for a couple dozen different strollers but have pretty much narrowed it down to just a few. We just drove over two hours (each way) yesterday to go stroller shopping for the first time. At the first store, we saw the Orbit Baby, Stokke Xplory, and Quinny Buzz (as well as a less expensive model we didn't like at all called the EasyWalker Sky.) Even though my husband initially ruled out any 3-wheel styles, he loved the Quinny. (It actually has two little wheels instead of 1 in the front center position.) I definitely liked it best of those three. Unfortunately, we didn't get to see the bassinet, which is something we'd definitely get. Then at the second store, we were able to see the Peg Perego Skate and the Bugaboo Cameleon. Well, my husband never, ever thought he'd want to spend $900 for a stroller (when I started my research, he thought even $500 was nutty), but it was seriously love at first sight. He really didn't even want to bother with the Cameleon after seeing the Skate. (In his words, it's like the Ferrari of strollers...the whole "Italian thing".) Like you, I had also ruled out the Bugaboo because of the 2-fold thing, but it's my mom's favorite (because of all the "pretty colors"), so I was trying to be open-minded. The only reservation I had had about the Skate (other than the high price, of course), prior to seeing it, was the weight: 33.7 lbs! But it didn't bother us at all. Like you, this is our first child so maybe we don't really "know" how much of a pain it's going to be to lift it in and out of the car every day. But we're both healthy, strong, fairly athletic people, so we decided it doesn't matter to us. I'd say that the bugaboo maneuvers every-so-slightly better than the Skate but not so much so that we'd consider it over the Skate. Now, the only other "serious contender" is one we haven't been able to see in person: the Uppababy Vista. It's a LOT cheaper and doesn't seem to have any major flaws (other than the 27" width when the regular all-terrain wheels are on it.) My parents (who live elsewhere in the country) have seen both the Skate and the Uppababy. Dad loved the uppababy but forgot why by the time he saw the Skate. (Clearly, he isn't taking this whole "stroller research" thing as seriously as he should!!) They saw the Skate and Cameleon side-by-side. Unfortunately, the salesman who demonstrated them was CLEARLY biased against the Skate and loved the Cameleon. I won't get into everything he said here, since this is already probably too long of a response, but suffice to say that I don't think it was a "fair comparison". So mom left the store still thinking the Bugaboo was still superior. That was disappointing for us, since we were hoping she'd share our "Skate excitement". Anyway, the only stroller other than the Uppababy I haven't seen and still haven't eliminated (based on negative reviews, specs, etc.) is the Bumbleride Queen B. But at this point, I'd say it's likely between the Uppababy and the Skate for us. Perhaps if we saw the Quinny bassinet and loved it, we *might* be tempted to put it back on our short list. But really, that convertible bassinet-seat feature is awesome. The guy who showed my parents the Skate emphasized that the Bugaboo bassinet is far superior in terms of baby's comfort, but to us (again, "first time parents", so take my comments with a grain of salt), the Skate bassinet looked plenty comfy! So I don't know if I've helped at all. Like you, I just want to DECIDE, even if we don't buy right away, so I can move on to the next decision (carriers/backpacks, perhaps...) And it sounds like we are basing our decision on very similar criteria. Have you seen the Skate in person? I think there's a very good chance that's what we'll end up with. The only remaining concern we have about the Skate is that it's the first model year, and there are bound to be minor glitches as a result, at least in some of the strollers they sent out. So that's a risk. My husband is going to call Peg Perego USA customer service on monday, partly to get answers to a couple little questions but also partly to find out how easy they are to deal with, in the event that we do get the Skate and have problems with it. I know Peg Perego is a solid brand that's been around forever. (My mom had Peg Peregos for my siblings and me!) But we're certainly not taking the decision to buy a $900 stroller lightly. (not to mention the $250 infant seat that goes with it and possibly the $100 matching storage bag...) Best of luck in your search! Hopefully, you'll just see one and just know that it's "the one" for you!!

International travel with newborn (3-8 months old)?

Betty

We are from Canada and thinking of taking a one month vacation/backpacking excursion with our newborn (once she is born). I have read the best time to take them is between 3 and 8 months old.... it's something we have always wanted to do, has anyone else ever done this? (We're thinking Europe or Australia). What concerns would you have with this?

Thanks!

Answer
It is a perfect time to take them on international travels. Once they're more mobile, it will be harder to keep them entertained and happy on such trips for a few years. Shorter trips will be possible, but for something like you're describing, it's best to do it within the first year or so.

Some concerns will involve how you will carry the baby and all of your gear for travel. Backpacking may not actually be the best idea simply because of weight issues. You'll need an excellent, comfortable backpack baby carrier. It might be a better idea to plan on renting a car for your entire trip and doing it by road for the majority of the time, going on short backpacking jaunts as you go.

One thing to think about is the types of vaccinations you might want your baby to have while travelling. Some vaccinations can't be given until baby is a certain age, which would need to be taken into consideration.

You will need to get your baby's passport as soon as possible so you will have it by the time you are ready to travel.

Another consideration will be feeding baby. If you are breastfeeding, you will have the easiest job of it and you won't ever have to worry about water quality or having somewhere to heat formula. Also, if baby is less than 6 months old, she won't even need solid foods at all, which will make it all the easier. If you are formula-feeding, however, you will have to think about bottles, formula, water, etc. Another benefit to breastfeeding abroad is that your baby will be less likely to get sick.

You will need to have breastpads to soak up leaking milk while you travel. I recommend bringing 4-6 good, thick cotton or hemp pads that can be hand-washed. Wash them every day.

Diapers. Believe it or not, cloth diapers are actually easier to deal with on a backpacking trip than disposables. Why? Because cloth diapers are easy to clean, so long as you're not squeemish about it. Especially if baby isn't eating solid foods yet, even poop is easy to clean. If you're using disposable diapers, you will have to consider how you will dispose of them. If you are using cloth, you will have to consider how you will clean them. The old-fashioned, plain cloth diapers work better for such travel than the fancy all-in-ones or anything like that. You can simply hang the cloth diapers up to dry after you've washed them in a stream/hostel/hotel with a mild soap. You don't even need to soak them in anything if you wash them every day or two.

Another concern will be how you will sleep with the baby. It is a suffocation hazard to have baby in a mummy bag or anything like that, so getting warm sleepers for baby will be important.

It's a wonderful idea and a great adventure.

Any suggestions for a backpack baby carrier?

I have a very active 15month old daughter. She likes to grab objects and destroy them. She is difficult to bring to a store. Yesterday, I had to hold her while shopping in hardware stores because she insisted on opening packages or bottles if I let her down. The shopping carts can be very dirty in a hardware store.

Does anyone use a backpack baby carrier for their toddlers for shopping? I don't do much hiking, and I use a stroller to take her on walks. So I would just use it to take her where I don't want her to run around.

Is it safe to get into? Is there a risk of dropping her while putting the backpack on? Any other uses for this? Any suggestions for brands? I heard Tough Traveler is good. Thanks.

Answer
I love my backpack for shopping, and I can still carry my soon to be 3 year old. This is the one I have http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441776409&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302735239&bmUID=1160421939450 . We bought it almost 5 years ago when our oldest was the right size for it. It still looks brand new. I used it for shopping and long walks, my husband uses it for hiking. Have fun!

What is a good backpack for 8 month old?

mica.dance

I'm looking for a good, comfy backpack for my 8 month old. Just to do some light walking/hiking in this fall/winter. I like the kind that the baby can see over your shoulders. I've heard Kelty Kids is a good brand, but sooo expensive!
The problem with soft carriers is that the baby usually sits right on your back, not up enough to see over your shoulders like ones with metal frames.

Answer
I had the Kelty, I got mine for about $70, but it was amazing, it honestly did not hurt my back at all and my daughter was 18 months when I used it (26lbs) I would highly recommend it, maybe you can see if someone is selling second hand in your area online (craigslist etc) or even at a second hand store. It was also great in the winter, putting her in that instead of trying to push a stroller through the snow, my daughter loved it!

Come to think of it I've never seen the father of the baby push his baby around in a stroller. What's up with that?

Answer
Many fathers do push strollers. But I can tell you as a fairly tall woman that the height of the stroller handles means many of us are hunched over the whole time. It might be quite uncomfortable for men to push a stroller very much. I know men who prefer to carry the baby in a backpack.

What are some of the most effed up things you have caught your dog eating?

cjrossi

I'll start:

disposable razor, electrical wiring, crunched christmas ornaments, eyeglasses, TV remote

and I'd like to say "baby gate doorknob" except I didn't catch him eating it, until he pooped it out whole, after a trip to the vet.

it is amazing - you think you have completely cleared and puppy-proofed an area, and they seem to pull stuff out of thin air!
WOW. This has been enlightening, amusing, and in alot of cases, gross.

Thanks for sharing!

Answer
This particular over sized Boxer mix came out of a drug house in a big city. There was suspicion she had been used as a "test subject" for street drugs. She for sure had ISSUES, a few bolts loose and was a rampant chewer.

Her menu over her lifetime was:

A $100 Scientific Calculator (copped from a backpack)
Jewelry - anything she could steal off my dresser
Rare plant bulbs
A thermometer (that she found in a new house I just moved into - cause I didn't own one)
A 12' tree...chewed off at ground level
Her own poop
Money - paper or coin (anything she could reach on the table, or counter top.
Cat, dog, raccoon, cow and bird poop
Human poop (camping once.. I thought I was gonna die)
Multiple hoses
Parts of a broken light bulb
A "floater" she fished out of the kid's john
A USED feminine napkin *gasp*she snagged out of the weeds (on the side of the road) while on a walk...
My dad's cherished barrel cactus.
My grandson's plastic alligator
Bumble Bees / yellow jackets/ honey bees
Quail

BUT... WHAT ALMOST KILLED HER (besides ME)... was
A 2"x2" redwood rung off my deck railing. She chewed it out one summer day so she could poke her head out of the railing and watching me pull into the driveway. She was in the vets for almost a week being treated for that stunt. She lived...but just barely.

Oddly...she's now pushing 11 yrs old and sleeping on the rug right behind my computer chair. I didn't dare rehome her.. I was afraid someone would take her out and SHOOT HER. It wasn't her fault her brain was fried. Now...she's allllllll gray faced and moves with a hitch in her git-a-long. She still occasionally steals a grocery receipt if she can snag it...but it's more for attention then anything else...LOL *knock on wood*... she has not ruined anything of value in a long time.
.
.ADDED:
You guys mentioning furniture disasters -
A friend of mine went and got an adolescent, very rambunctious Boxer and for what ever BRAIN FART REASON...she left him home alone (.l-o-o-s-e in her house) about a week after she got him. When she got back he had pulled the cushions off her n-e-w couch! Starting on the front...he chewed a whole clear out the BACK of the couch! She called me for sympathy and all I could do was laugh until I cried......rotffffffffffff. Duh x 100...lol What WAS she thinking?

Sweet 16 jersey shore party?

cheer gurl

I am having a sweet 16 jersey shore party! I need to know like what i should wear to be like snooki. Please dont answer that she doesnt wear nothing or dresses like a whore. And I just need party ideas please.
Thank you!

Answer
Makeup:
Get dirt, preferably with an orange tint, and mix it with water and smear it all over your face. Puree carrots and soak your face in the juice the day before if you can't find any orangey dirt. Then, rub black food dye all around your eyes. It stays longer than regular old makeup and you'll need it because you'll be partying hard, and you don't want the world to end if your makeup runs, because it will.

Hair:
If your hair isn't already black, dye it. Put a gallon of product in your hair. Get hair extensions galore. We all know her secret. Ask your local gym for armpit hair and glue it together to get the perfect length instead of paying 300 bucks for remy human hair. Go to the pet store and buy a rat with babies. Put them in your hair, 75% fake at this point, then clip them in, sealing their greasy, hairy fate. Simple.

Outfit:
Dress like a whore. A shiny, short, shiny whore. Wear black, patent leather 8" stiletto high heels. Giggle like a retard if you get too drunk to walk in them and start waddling down the sidewalk, or if one breaks. Or both. Then break down crying about it 30 seconds later.

Other/ party ideas:
Wear too much perfume. PePeLePew, a fancy designer perfume, would work best. Use the whole bottle. For added fun, hire some random guy to come to your party and punch you in the face. I'm sure any guy will once he hears "sweet 16" and "jersey shore party" smashed together like Twinkies that have been in the bottom of a backpack for two months. The food dye comes in handy here, as well, to mask the black eye that you may receive. It should stay for two weeks until you're in the clear. You want to make this as realistic as possible, because everyone knows that the show isn't scripted. Get really drunk, even if your mom won't allow it because that's all that the show is about anyways.

What Job Can I Get If I'm 14?

Daniel

I'm 14 years old, I really wanna get started working in New Jersey, Where can I work??

Answer
Look up your state laws. I know here in FL they have limited hours and can't handle cash or prepare food, so most kids get jobs as signholders, or baggers at grocery stores. you can also maybe start your own business if you're responsible....lawn services, baby/pet-sitting, assisting older/very busy people with chores such as grocery shopping/cleaning...if you're creative you could make some sort of product to sell, such as designing t-shirts, backpacks, jewelry or "spirit sandals" to sell to kids you go to school with....

@ Suqarcake- if there's a Winn-Dixie in your area, they hire 14/15 yearolds and you get 2 4-hour shifts on the weekends, and can work if schools not in session, such as school holidays

Answer
Little, important stuff: Be prepared for bugs, sun, rain, cold, and heat. Not so much for you, you can just suck it up, but for the 4 month old.

You're right at the cusp between a Baby Bjorn front carrier and a child carrier backpack (Kelty is good, REI has them). Depends a little on your own child's neck strength. We've done both. 2 months through Europe with 2-3 month old in a Baby Bjorn (great for public transit) and BP trips in CA, AK, and HI with him in a Kelty child carrier backpack when he was 6 to 24 months.

2 to 4 years old was a time for closer stuff - more camping, less BPing. By 5, he could do 3 miles in a morning OR an afternoon and then we'd make camp.

In some ways, it is as easy as it will get for the next 5 years. Mom has everything the baby wants, baby has a semi-regular sleep schedule now, but stays where you put him/her. We've got a friend who followed her husband on the fricking Iditarod Sled Dog race (1100 miles) with a little one like that so it can be done.

Note that if you are carrying baby, someone else needs to carry all the baby STUFF. And your stuff. And their own stuff. That gets to be a lot of stuff. Sometimes I (dad) make two trips to haul it in (I get a peaceful round trip as a sherpa). Or we book a remote cabin (in AK or HI) with beds, stove, pots, roof, wood stove already there. It cuts your weight a lot and lets you do it in one trip. As does going during mild weather - you pack less clothes for everyone.

Just accept that the grownups will wear the same outer clothes everyday and the baby's outfit is just fine if there's drool on it. It's a BP trip, not a fashion show.

Attitude: While on a road trip or a BPing trip or riding in a pressurized metal tube at 31,000 feet I try to think of a pioneer family taking 6 months to cross the plains in a covered wagon. Hard tack, salt pork and bad water every day. Hot and dry or too cold all the time. One kid was born on the way, one died. Makes $5 for a hot meal and another $5 for a cold beer from the stewardess seem like a bargain. Or Mac&Cheese (4 years from now on a family BP trip) seem not so bad.

As others have said, don't get too ambitious - you'll do a lot less distance than you did on adult-only trips. Keep it simple, keep it fun, test and fine-tune the concept slowly. At 3 to 6 months, we found we could do most anything (hike the Black Forest, the Louvre, a glacier hike, subways, etc) for 2.5 hours. And then get somewhere comfortable (cafe, mountain hut, tent) for another nursing session and a diaper change.

Remember - the spectacular destinations are for your sake, not theirs until they're 5 or so. They'd be just as happy with the sticks and rocks in your backyard as at 10,000 feet in the mountains. Or on a playground in any city.

And accept that it will be more of a test of your flexibility as a parent than as a stud-muffin hiker. Modelling an active, adventurous lifestyle is important to us (trying to combat the TV/supersize me culture) and we are starting to see the fruits of that now.

what to buy for my baby?

What else do I need to buy to go along with my breast pump?

Amanda

I am going to buy a Medela® Pump In Style® Advanced Breast pump Backpack this week and am wondering if there is anything that I need to buy to go with it. They have a ton of things at the store and they will Tell u to buy it all. So I am looking for real women's answers instead. Things that maybe you couldn't have lived without, or were talked into buying.

Answer
I had the double mini medella breastpump. It came with most stuff you need for right now. But if you plan on pumping and storing your Their really cheap and in all supermarkets. (Madella do do little milk storage bottles but I found they didnt hold as much milk.If you plan to let others feed baby from your storage milk then obviously bottles etc needed for the milk. So you probably need a steriliser to clean the breast pump bits that come off too. Breast pads a big must! I used to wear 2 as the medella pumps quite strong for getting a good flow from you so I leaked a lot lol)

I also bought nipple shields as I had a bad experience the first time I breastfed and ended up with cracked bleeding nipples, I used the shield to help my nipples recover butfor baby to still be able to feed from me without me crying my eyes out! ( they were from Madella too)

Basically if you just pumping to get your milk flow going you dont need anything other than what youve already got!

Feel free to message me if you want ay extra info! x
