Suggestions for a baby/toddler backpack?

Silly Momm

My husband and I are planning on doing some camping/backpacking once the weather warms up (it's still snowing where we live and we're beginning to wonder what Spring is) and we are in need of a baby/toddler backpack. My son is 10 months old and weighs in at a nice, healthy 35 pounds so an INFANT carrier is out of the question. He is much to heavy for those. I am referring to the ones with a large frame that carry ~50 pounds or more. I have no idea what names are good and reliable and research I've done hasn't turned up very good answers. Anyone with a suggestion, please let me hear it! Thanks!

Answer
We have a Kelty Kids backpack. It is wonderful. It is quite comfortable to wear, easy to put on and my son loves being in it (he's 14 months and around 25-30lbs). We camp and it is a lifesaver --- we bought it to use in place of our Ergo carrier on long hikes/camping.

It is like this one:
http://www.kelty.com/p-283-fc-10.aspx

We managed to find a gently used one on craiglist for about half of the new price.

what did you/do you plan to buy for second baby?

kc

My husband and I have an 18 month old right now, and are currently entertaining the idea of having a baby #2 in the near future, although we aren't 100% sure when due to our sons special needs that we want to first make sure we have addressed fully. Anyways, we were shopping off my friends registry for her shower, and we were wondering what all we would need if we were to have another child soon. We already know we need the crib, highchair, extra carseat, etc...but was there anything from your first baby that you wished you had but didn't?
We know we want one of those cradle swings that go both ways, as our first one didn't have one, and we'd want a double stroller. We have nearly all the basics, a plain play gym, bouncer, jumperoo...we went fairly minimal though.
We have our own ideas on what we'd change or get, but just for fun looking for ideas from others on what they did, plan to do differently.

I never had a glider, although I thought maybe I wish I would have, did you guys use yours or did it sit empty?
Are side by side strollers or the tandem ones easier? Side by side seem so wide, but front to back look hard to maneuver:) Having the older one walk isn't an option for us, as he he never developed the walking reflux. (dr.s say he WILL walk, but probably not til about 3-5 yrs old... but instead of just knowing how, he will have to be taught, like teaching someone to relearn kind of)

We have a 3 BR house, 2 BR upstairs, 1 Down. Do we go downstairs and have each baby with their own room (s/he'd be in our room the first 4 months probably) or have them share a room when baby slept through the night? I feel weird being on a different level!

Answer
I'm expecting baby 2 at the beginning of July. Baby 1 will be 15 months old. Here is what I am asking for:
- more cloth diapers (not for everyone, but I CD with BumGenius diapers)
- an Ergo baby carrier (I have another one- Kelty Kids-, but really want an Ergo. Think I can do two carriers - one back and one front- if I had one) (http://www.ergobabycarrier.com/ )
- a hiking backpack carrier for Baby 1 - probably from MEC (Mountain Equipment Coop)
- a second crib (convertible) and dresser
- extra caddy attachments for my stroller
- some sort of sled that I can pull both babies in next winter

I'm also going to find out the sex with this baby. Baby 1 is a girl, so if baby 2 is a boy I may need a few clothes (though not many).

As for your question about strollers, I have the Phil and Ted's Sport stroller (http://philandteds.com/products/push/sport ) with the extra seat attachment (tandem). LOVE this stroller (it is so easy to maneuver), and I have heard nothing but good things about the second seat. I've attached the second seat to try it out and it seems just as easy as with only one seat attached.

One of my favorite things from Baby 1 was my diaper bag. I had a normal diaper bag at first, but hated it. Then I bought the Skip Hop Backpack diaper bag (http://www.skiphop.com/product/21010.html ) ...I can't imagine using another. It clips to your stroller if you don't want to carry it, which I think will be convenient with 2 babes.

Another thing I had for baby 1 and LOVE is my Pea Pod (http://www.kidco.com/main.taf?p=4,5 ). It's great for when you're outdoors (eg park, beach). I might get a second one for baby 2, or put them both in the same pod.

For sleep, if both babies sleep fairly well through the night I don't see why they can't share a room. That's my plan...if I have to turn my office into a bedroom, so be it, but I really don't want to! : )

As for the glider, I didn't have one, but I've considered getting one. I found that I sat with baby 1 in a comfy chair near the window a lot, but didn't need to rock. Might be nice to have one, especially the ones with the foot rest/ottoman.

Everyone has different needs/likes though. (You can probably tell we spend a lot of time outdoors, so we need things for that.) You probably have the best idea of what you want and need based on your experience with your first child!

Here is the dealio. Im a 22 year old guy about to have a baby girl and i wanted to get a diaper bad and one of those kangaroo thingys that you put the baby that sits on your chest, but all the stuff i see if for the moms. Can anyone help me out to find some cool looking stuff? =D

Answer
When my wife and I were picking out new baby gear, she actually found a really nice Under Armour backpack that we use as our diaper bag. It works really well:

- has plenty of pockets for diapers, wipes and everything
- we use the mp3 pocket for pacifiers so they're easy to find
- has two side pockets for water bottles that we use for baby bottles
- i don't feel like a total fool carry it around

Here's a link to what it looks like:

As for a baby carrier, I use this:
http://www.evenflo.com/product.aspx?id=188&pfid=167

I really like it because it's easily adjustable and fairly comfortable to wear. It isn't some bright obnoxious color and it supports a baby facing frontwards or backwards.

Plus, most people will be focusing on your kid and not you, so you have that going for you.

I just bought one of these at the thrift store so we can take our baby hiking with us. It is in great shape and we love it, but i want to wash it. The instructions say to follow the instructions in the manual to remove the washable seat (it is machine washable according to the tag) but i don't have the manual and can't find it on line. I've gotten it partially removed but I think there must be an easier way, and i can't figure out which parts go in the washing machine and where the "machine washable" parts stop. Can anyone help me? thanks so much!

Answer
I didn't have an owner's manual either, so I simply removed the entire nylon part from the frame and detatched the backpack . I filled the sink with warm water and soaked it all for 15 minutes then I used a brush with a bit of laundry soap on it to clean it. Then I gave it good rinse and hung it up to dry. It took a day and a half to dry (because the foam had absorbed some water) but it looked new in the end. If you only want to wash part of it just soak and clean that part.
Bottom line: handwash it with mild soap, using the washing machine might tangle it up or worse.

How do you occupy your baby at a restaurant?

Gracee's M

So I have been cooking a lot lately but tonight by husband took Gracee and I out for dinner. It was really kinda crazy trying to get Gracee to sit still in her high chair with out trying to stand up, and she was getting restless and bored. I kept giving her food and snacks to play with and eat but they eventually just ended up on the floor.
Do you have any restaurant tips or anything to keep your baby happy and entertained through-out the whole meal?

Answer
i have a little backpack full of toys that i bring with us to the restaurant.
its loaded with so many different things that its hard for them to get bored. and my kids are only 3 1/2 years old and 10 1/2 months. its got everything in it. dolls, cars, blocks, crayons and coloring books , you name it its in there!! oh and a little packet of wipes too!. ;0)
so when we get to the restaurant i sit them in at the table and when they start getting fidgety out come the toys!. and they play quietly until the food comes then the toys go away until they are done eating and then they get cleaned up and out they come agin until everyone is finished and ready to go. :0)
but dont worry too much, most kids even with an abundance of toys arent going to sit through an entire meal at a resaurant without making a peep. just take it in stride and be thankful they arent screaming the whole time and throwing their food at the people next to you . lol :P just try to go to family restaurants :0)
now believe me this isnt something we practice at home, but toys work wonders for eating out!. our bag is always packed and in the van ready to go, just in case we make any last minute stops. and it comes in hand when we get stuck anywhere waiting.!
good luck next time! :0)

How do I stop thinking about this?

baby backpack with leash image

Nicole

Today, I was watching my father hold my newborn baby daughter. I realized although I knew he wouldn't dare harm her, any guy could. I have a trust issue with this now and now I don't know how to stop thinking about it. This is vague and impractical, but can someone just give me an answer?

Answer
That's is such a very hard question. You cannot protect her from every guy and from every harm. But you can do your best from the biggies. Always keep her in your sight and within arms reach in public. When she starts walking and you don't have enough hands, it's time for a backpack leash. Know who what when where and why. Get a nanny cam. As she gets older your safety concerns will change and so to will your worries. Remember to pick your battles, some things she will have to learn the hard way, like don't stand on your rocking horse, Others you have to teach that are non negotiable like don't talk to strangers. Worrying for her is normal, but don't let those worries control you and ruin the joy you have with her.

I would need some tips and advice as to how to keep him occupied in ONE spot while I do my ticketing, go through security, and wait until boarding time. He will not stay in his stroller for long
He is 28 pounds. Should I rather use a baby carrier?

Answer
The best way to go about it would be to bring him lots of entertainment. Books, toys, markers and paper, etc. If you put him in a stroller but he has things to do he should be able to sit there, plus you'd be able to keep track of him easily. But like someone else suggested, you could also get one of those "leashes" which are really just backpacks for the child with a string and handle attached. Here are some inexpensive ones: http://www.walmart.com/search/search-ng.do?search_query=Child%20Leashes&adid=22222222220018687822&wmlspartner=wmtlabs&wl0=b&wl1=g&wl2=&wl3=14210570032&wl4=That way you could keep track of him and he could keep his entertainment in the backpack. And ignore the people who comment that it's "wrong"...it's just a way to keep track of your child! It's not like just because you have one you'll treat them like a dog!

Good luck :)

Things a new mom didnt know she really needed?

Kristen

Hello,

My cousin is about to have preemie twin girls and Iâd really like to get her some things that would truly be useful to her. So my question is for all the moms, what was truly useful to make you and your babies more comfortable, relaxed, happyâ¦

I know a helping hand would be very useful but she lives across the county and she does have family there to help her with that. Iâm honestly looking for materialistic things that would really help her without just being âclutterâ All suggestions are welcome, thank you for reading this. :)

Answer
I have a 2 1/2 month old, and throughout this time, I kept writing down the things that really came in handy for me and things that I could have done without. Some of the things that are really really helpful for me are:

1. Bottle Warmer - I pumped my breastmilk due to inverted nipples that made it hard for me to breastfeed so in the middle of the night I had to have bottles ready. This warmer has done wonders cause I kept it in our bedroom and it has a cooler that holds two bottles. It helped me avoid going out to the kitchen and made my life a lot easier. Whether she is breastfeeding via pump or bottlefeeding, this warmer really helps.

2. My breast friend - this is an alternative to the boppy. I still find multiple uses for my boppy, however, boppys don't provide the best support when breastfeeding. My brest friend is sturdier and provides much better support for your back and shoulders when breastfeeding. It also allows you to transport the baby to their crib when sleeping, holding her on there without alot of movement.

3. A backpack for babies or sling - this worked miracles for me with my newborn during those stages when she really wanted to be next to mommy all the time. Before this, I found myself bound to the bedroom feeling guilty if I didn't hold her, but once I put her in the carrier, I was able to cook, clean and feel liberated to do things around the house. I recently discovered the Moby wrap. I don't know how this would work with twins, but it can help with one at a time. Go to www.mobywrap.com.

4. Glider - Oh my gosh.........this thing works wonders with putting the baby to sleep or comforting them when needed.

5. Swing - she tends to enjoy this as well, and often times she goes to sleep here.

6. Sleeper Bags - These are very helpful to avoid unbuttoning a lot of clothes in those midnight hours. My husband loved these also.

7. Breastfeeding Bras - some say you don't need these but they were a God send for me, even when pumping. They would help hold the pump in place so my hands could be free to do other things. And believe me, I pumped a lot.

8. A Breast Pump - I invested in the Medela Pump that runs about $300 or $280, I can't remember. This was such a worthwhile investment. Whoever says the manual pumps are okay have never had to pump before. I believe in investing in the top of the line when it comes to pumping.

9. Gift Cards - my friends gave me tons of gift cards for my shower(s) and they were so handy. It helped me during those times I wasn't working and needed things for the baby.

10. Diapers - Find out what kind of diapers she prefers to use for them and stock up. I am still surviving off of the diapers we recv'd from our shower.

11. Burping Clothes - I prefered the kind that are like diapers. they can be purchased in WalMart where you get 12 for $12. I can't seem to get enough of these.

12. Bibs - I never knew bibs were so expensive. Get tons of these for later. They don't tend to use as much when newborns, but at around 2 months, they start to drool more and it helps when you burp them and they spit up. I never had many so it caused me to change her clothes a whole lot more.

If she doesn't mind second hand items, I highly recommend shopping for used baby items on www.craigslist.com. You can find great deals on their for things like the glider or swing.

Hope this helps!

Things to do with a 14 month old baby in Hawaii?

baby backpack stroller
 on Baby Backpack

Sandy C

We're traveling to Hawaii in April with our baby girl who will be 14 months. We're going to all the islands and I don't know what activities we'll really be able to do while there. We live in Miami so the beach isn't the main attraction for us. I purchased a baby carrier/backpack and an all terrain stroller to get around. Is there any hiking to do with a tough stroller? Carrying the baby for a month on our backs will not be easy. Any suggestions?

Answer
There are some easy hikes on Oahu that might be doable with a heavy duty stroller, boomer gal has one idea. Thereis also Koko Head (by Hawaii Kai) and Makiki Valley (which is wide enough as it is used every day heavily). Also Diamond Head is doable (not the rougher areas). There is a Children's Discovery Center nearer to downtown that would be fun and it features Hawaiana. There is also the Bishop Museum which might be interesting for a child.

How much money should I save for a new baby?

Jilly

I want to start trying for a baby next year. I plan on taking between 3-6 months off from work. How much money should I set aside? Thanks.

Answer
If you plan to be off work that long, I would save a few thousand.

On baby items alone, brand new for the most part, we spent about $1500. Luckily our baby shower brought us a TON of diapers, clothing, and major expenses (stroller and car seat). The most expensive items will be clothes and diapers. Babies tend to go through them like crazy. My son is wearing 3-6 month clothing and he is 9 weeks old.

He is breastfed, so if you plan to feed your baby formula...add that to your expenses as well. I am not sure how much formula costs. BUT you also have to figure how much baby might eat during growth spurts. My baby ate double during weeks 2,3, and 6. They literally will want to eat every 2 hours even when they seems to eat every 3 or 4 normally.

Here is a breakdown of our expenses:

Clothes: $75 (bought a few pajamas for warmer weather)
Diapers: $40 (newborns tend to go through 12-14 day, mine goes through 8 or so, we buy pampers sensitive)
Wipes: $20 (extra large box with 6 refills)
Ointment: $7 (Aveeno or Butt paste)
Baby wash: $7 (we use Aveeno, baby skin dries out with fragrance washes)

* I didn't add the toys we bought him this month because with a newborn, the first month is literally sleep, poop, eat, sleep. That is about it. Then about month two it would be nice to buy books, floor gyms...etc.

**Buy a white noise machine or mobile (helps them sleep)
**If not breastfeeding, buy a binky
**Receiving blankets! They sleep better when swaddled (about $6-8 a pack)
**Hand mittens, they claw like crazy
**hats
**They go through a stage where they never want to leave your side, buy a safe sling or baby **backpack to carry him/her around in....this stage usually sets in around 3rd week.

Advice for taking our 19 month old son on a long-haul flight (30+ hours)?

ergo baby backpack uk image

Steven Jen

Hi, later this year my partner and I are taking our son who will be 19 months old on his first ever flight but I for one am dreading it as it is a long-haul flight going from New Zealand to the UK (via Australia/Singapore and possibly Dubai - depending on which airline we finally decide to book with) for a 3 week stay.

As most boys probably are, our son is very energetic, won't stay still very long at all and gets very bored easily so needs lots of entertaining.

The trip will be well worth it when we do get to the UK as our son has never met any of my side of the family who are all over there. So knowing that alone will help us cope somewhat with any stresses of flying with a young child.

Any advice/tip's/experiences shared etc to help ease the journey will be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Answer
I'm a former Flight Attendant and I fly transatlantics alone a lot with my three children.

This is a long flight and you're going to need to be organized. I wont lie to you and I have to admit that this was probably the worst age for air travel. They love to move but don't have the reasoning to talk about the fact that sometimes they have to be seated, etc.

I recommend that instead of a diaper bag, purse, etc. you opt for a large backpack. Mine goes up to my knee when placed on the ground. Bring at least two changes of clothes and way more diapers than he usually goes through in the same time frame. He will need more than usual. Take out packs of 10, straight from the pack so that they're really flat and put in a plastic bag, Bind with rubber bands and this will make space. Clothes are rolled, placed in plastic and also bound with rubber bands. Split the supplies between both of you in case you're separated or just so that one can take him somewhere without having to fuss with the gear.

My kids at that age were too active for portable DVD players, although they were useful later. You actually have a number of options as far as gadgets that play movies so find out what works for you and if you think it'll keep him occupied. One tip I got was to burn the movies on to your hard drive if you're bringing a computer to save battery time while watching. Make sure he wears the headphones. Practice at home if necessary.

I found simple toys worked best; toy trucks, toy cars, plastic animals, coloring things (magadoodles as well as old fashioned pens and paper), chunky books with openable flaps, pinwheels, plastic rings that click together, pipe cleaners, play dough, etc. Nothing that makes noise. Even a quiet noise played 10,000 will drive your fellow passengers batty. Make sure some of the toys are new (or at least never seen before) so you can "present" them at critical times, like to offset a tantrum and after the plane pulls away from the gate and everyone is supposed to be seated.

Try to get him off of bottles and on to a sippy cup if possible. But if he's like my son, good luck! Chances are he wont so opt for the bottles with disposable plastic liners. Get the flat liners (not "pop-ins"), premeasure the powder in each, roll it up and put in a ziplock.

I really recommend that he have his own seat. This is a LONG time to be on your laps and he's going to be big and heavy. If you opt to save money, try to get an empty seat on the plane beside you. They often do this for families. Be really nice at check-in.

I always fly with a car seat. This is a whole, big subject. Babies are quieter and more comfortable in their own familiar car seat, as well as much, much safer. It's not that big a deal to take it along. I simply strapped mine to a metal luggage cart and pulled it behind me with the carry-on bags. You do want to check your car seat's compatibility, before you book. Make sure you can use it on board. Different airlines have different rules.

Be sure not to check it as luggage. They often get lost and/or broken en route so either use it on board or gate-check it. You may want to arrange a car seat at your destination but please never use one from a rental car company. Have relatives ask around and make sure it's not too old.

I really recommend a good baby carrier. It is the secret to successfully flying with children. He's far too big for one of those dire "front packs" (like the Bjorn) but something comfortable and perhaps with a back carry is good. If you don't already use a sling or wrap, you may want to get a Mei Tai, Ergo, Beco or similar carrier. They're soft, easy to take along and are magic for calming overtired babies on flights (experience speaking!) Also, in big scary airports, toddlers don't always sit nicely in their strollers and want to be held. As a Flight Attendant, I saw far too many parents trying to get through airports with clingy and sleeping babies over their shoulders. Don't be one of them!

Please don't fret over ears. It's actually a myth that babies have to suck on something for take-off and landing. Sure, if you want to offer a cup to drink, not on landing but at the top of descent (landing is too late) when everyone's ears have to reverse pressure, do so. This is about an hour before. What I do recommend is that you schedule a doctor's visit and make sure he doesn't have any ear blockages or infections. These are dangerous and painful to fly with so just have someone look in his ears. We "caught" one in my toddler son once. But on the flight itself, there is no reason to unnecessarily wake up your child or force him to drink if he doesn't want to.

For more information, nine years ago I wrote an article on this subject. It's based on both my personal and professional experience of flying with children. It's totally non-commercial and other parents from around the world have contributed;

Flying alone from Houston to UK with my 22 month old toddler on my lap?

curiousme

Hi! I am flying alone with my 22 month old toddler on my lap from Houston to London with a layover in Dulles. My flight times are 2.5 hours and 7.5 hours with a layover of 1.5 hours. Since the tickets are so expensive I did not buy a seat for my daughter as I am not required to by the airlines. Now as the time is getting closer, I am nervous how I will manage with her on my lap for the duration of the long flight. Are there any suggestions? Have any of you flown alone wth a 20 month old toddler on lap?

Also, when in the baggage claim area, how would I be managing my daugnter's stroller and also my bags through the customs. Any suggestions on this?

Answer
I'm a former Flight Attendant and I fly a lot with my three kids.

That's a long flight, with a connection and a big baby. I've seen some pretty miserable transatlantic flights with big toddlers when I was working!

Are you flying a U.S. company? If so, you can use your FAA approved car seat on board, if there's an empty seat. Will you need a car seat in London? Never check car seats in as luggage. At check-in, be really nice and ask about having you sit next to an empty seat. Sometimes they "block" seats next to babies, using them only if necessary. The other plus; if the seat is filled, it might be an airline employee flying on a pass (thus less likely to complain about a big toddler!)

Take the car seat to the gate, even if they aren't sure. Sometimes, empty seats pop up last minute with "no-shows" and you may still get a seat. Having the car seat will solidify you "reason" for getting the empty seat. If you are unsuccessful, the seat will be "gate-checked" and sent down with the strollers and wheelchairs. This is better than checking them in as luggage. You can then collect the seat and try again to use it on the trans-atlantic portion.

Check at the podium at Dulles and restate your request for an extra seat.

The absolute secret to flying easily with a toddler is to have a GOOD baby carrier. Fiddly Bjorns and other front packs are too small. Look into getting an Ergo, Becco or other soft front/backpack. I saw too many parents dragging sleeping children off the airplane, uncomfortably slung over shoulders, etc. When I finally had children, I had a sling which meant I wasn't one of them!

I actually ditched the stroller and used a metal luggage cart to haul my car seat (with an extra bungee). This worked just as well as an overpriced "Gogokidz" and I could chuck the diaper bag on it. I found with a toddler, a full stroller was overkill. It's just not necessary since the baby can ride on the car seat. The stroller can be checked or borrow one at your destination.

Going through customs, I put the baby in the baby carrier and everything else on the luggage cart. I simply pushed the cart through. Remember too that with a toddler this age, they can walk or go in the carrier. It's tiring to hold such a big baby but at the same time, he's too young to do all that walking. Alternating between the car seat on the luggage cart, the baby carrier and having the child walk was the easiest way (and I fly alone transatlantically with three closely spaced children)

For more information, nine years ago I wrote an article on this subject. It's based on both my personal and professional experience of flying with children. It's totally non-commercial and other parents from around the world have contributed;

Good luck!

i was just wondering about diaper bags. lol i have a very super cute tote diaper bag. but my hubby wants one of his own that doesnt look so feminine. just wondering if ya'll got one and where i could find a more "manly" diaper bag lol....preferably one that looks like a backpack. thanks

Answer
Hi,
I think the easiest option would be to have him buy his own backpack and just use it as a diaper bag. The only difference would be that it didn't say MOTHERCARE on it or something.

If he DOES want a specific one, though, here is a list of 'Daddy Diaper Bags':

How exactly can I tone up without any dumbells? I do have a stretch cord-?

Jessica

Hello,

I am 23. I just had my second child 5 months ago and have already lost a pretty nice chunk of weight. It's time to tone it up!

5'3 140 lbs ----> target weight: 125 lbs

I'm aiming for an all around workout, but specifically looking for these areas:

â¢I need to know what exercises will get rid of my arm flab, tighten and tone.
â¢I would like to know the best exercises for nice, firm (butt)cheeks.
â¢Exercises to tighten and tone my stomach

I've been avoiding trying to lose anymore weight. Because I'm afraid if I do, I'm going to have loose skin. So it's really time to gear it up. If you could help me map out a weekly challenge that would be awesome. Thank you ahead for sharing your thoughts and comments.

Answer
Use your body for resistance. I just saw a water bottle workout in a woman's magazine. Online, there is a sand in a backpack workout. you make the backpack with sand yourself. For butt, while on hands and knees, kick back alternate legs (donkey kicks). Abs, hang from parallel bar at park while out with baby, bring up legs in front of you. Arms, hold water bottles, bend arms towards the back and straighten in back parallel to floor. Do sets of 15 each, three sets. Do push ups, you know, exercises from grade school and middle school. Walk with baby daily. Get Denise Austin's book from the library to learn numerous exercises to do at home throughout the day.

What are the words on pages 71 and 72 in The Clique by Lisi Harrison?

Im trying to find a site where they sell the baby carrier backpacks, they are cloth and usually tan there is no metal frame of anything. Does anyone know where to find one?

Answer
DO NOT GET THE SNUGLI, bjorn, or others like this. They are bad for babies spine and hips, and soon hurt mom's back. Good ones that distribute weight correctly are the Ergo, the Baby Hawk, the Beco and similar brands. You pay much more, but you can comfortably carry a 25 pound 2 year old in these carriers. The good carriers have baby sitting on their bums, the snugli dangles baby from the crotch.

I have used the Ergo for a 25 pound 2 year old, and I loved my ring sling from this site. I'm now using a Baby Hawk Oh Snap for the 2 yr old, I'm in a baby wearing network in town and we all share slings and carriers.

Anyone know any good ones? My baby is 4 1/2 months, 13lbs 9oz. Don't want the backpack carrier things..

Answer
I've have the Moby Wrap. I really like it. It can easily support my toddler. It is easy to wrap when you get the hang of it. I certainly recommend it.

To the first poster --- bag style slings (like those made by Infantino) have been implicated in suffocation deaths because of the way the "hold" the baby --- they essentially force the baby into a chin-to-chest position (which cuts off oxygen supply) and obscure the parent's view. The recall/advisories on slings are specifically about bag slings. All parents should learn how to properly position a baby and not buy products that make it virtually impossible to do so.

Baby (front) carriers for Pre-schoolers?

Fanano

Hi,

We are from Dubai, UAE (we are used to warm temperatures). My little brother is 2 & 1/2. He moves quite a lot, and we might be going to Japan in the winter, its his first time to a cold-snowy place. We are worried about him, so I decided on getting a carrier.

1) It is appropriate to get carriers for children at that age, right?
2) What do you recommend is one of the most convenient carriers (we prefer those that are front and not facing parent)?

* Also:
I would highly appreciate if someone could suggest one of those carriers that are actually a multi-purpose (front carriers, back carriers, and stroller seat?)
If front carriers are irrelevant..
then, how about back carriers like the one "Ethel" mentioned.

Answer
Well there is a carrier for the hip for older children to about 3 1/2

here's the link :

http://www.infantino.com/Carriers/151-302.php

or if not you can just get a Backpack which is for older babies and he will ride on your back.

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_ba?url=node%3D166828011&field-keywords=+baby+backpacks

If the child is 2 1/2 Im not sure why you're so concerned.. just about the cold? Dress him warmly, and he will be fine. Really. Just make sure he's dressed appropriately when going outside. If he's in a stroller maybe get a stroller with a foot muff so he'll be warmer.

Things to do with a 14 month old baby in Hawaii?

best backpack carriers for baby image

How do you walk your dogs with a small child?

baby backpack with leash
on The Perfect Leash The Perfect 1
baby backpack with leash image

Bird

I'm thinking about the upcoming Winter months and wondering how I'll manage walking my two dogs with my baby. I'll be living in an apartment so I'll have to walk them, I can't just let them out in a backyard. I'm wondering how other people make it work. Thanks!

Answer
Will your baby be walking with you?

The great thing about dogs is that they can be taught to do just about whatever you want.

First, lets talk about your dogs and their walking behavior. When you walk, do they tug you along? Do they cross the leash, always darting around to sniff and investigate? Do they stop to smell something and refuse to go, even when you call them and tug on the leash? If this sounds like your dogs, then your first step is to teach them some walking manners!

If you have little or no dog training experience, you can join a class! Try calling your local dog shelter and asking if they have information. (They often do: naughty dogs are more likely to end up at the shelter than polite ones.) Also, ask at your local pet store. The chains, like Petsmart, also offer training classes. Shop around for a trainer and a system that works for you. Clicker training is easy to pick up, for both dog and owner.

While you still have options, I would recommend you start walking them both, on leash, for long enough walks that they feel tired. Then you can go home, let them rest for a few minutes... And then take the poor tired dears right out again, but this time with the baby. If your baby can walk, have her walk with you. This is just to get the dogs used to walking in a group with baby, and get baby used to walking with dogs.

Second question is this: How much do you trust the dogs around your baby? I don't mean to imply they might eat her, but are they used to being around each other? Are the dogs interested in baby, or is she family, and just another person they've accepted in their lives?

If you will be carrying your baby, you can get a baby backpack. If your baby will be in a stroller, go ahead and take the stroller with you when you walk your dogs. Get them used to walking with the stroller. That way when you add a living baby to it, it shouldnt be too much of a surprise.

Hope this helps!

(If you decide not to take an obedience class, please do teach them yourself. Check on the Internet for how-tos about leash training, obedience, heeling, and dog/baby relationships.)

Do you think its wrong when people put their children on a leash?

Spencey

Today I saw someone with their child on a leash. It was one of those backpacks with the leash attached to it. What do you think of these? Are they wrong?

Answer
Leashes are not meant just for dogs. We use them to keep our eyeglasses around our neck, our dogs safe from running off and/or being hit by a car, purse straps are a leash of sorts, some people use a leash on their wallets. If we use this device to protect these material things and our pets, why would we not use them to protect our most precious children?

Children are FAST. In just a fraction of time, they can be chasing a butterfly into the road, or lost in the crowd at a mall, etc. The leashes offer a sense of safety and security for both parent and child.

Holding their hands is extremely uncomfortable. They have to hold their arm at an angle that is not natural, it causes hands to sweat, and it gives them no freedom to explore. The tethers keep them safely at your side without discomfort for either parent or child, and they can still use their hands, etc.

Not everyone needs to use them. I bought them when I took my two older children- then 5 and 7- to Disney World. We did not need them, but had I thought they were necessary Iw oudl have used them in a second. My youngest daughter is 3 and we have not used it with her for a while, but we did- she actually enjoyed it but then again she also went through a phase of crawling around and barking and panting. Just a vivid imagination.

In my opinion, it is not wrong. It is no different than using a baby carrier, stroller, play pen, straps on the seat in the shopping cart, etc.

At which age did you start to carry baby on your back?

baby backpack carrier ergo
on Baby Baby Carriers Baby Carriers Slings Ebay | Home Design Plans
baby backpack carrier ergo image

LGM

My little daughter is three months, two weeks old. She can hold up her head pretty well, but can't sit yet, of course. I have an ergo-baby carrier and a sling. However, both seemed to be laid out to carry a baby her age in front, rather than on the back. At which age would it be safe for baby to be carried on my back?

Answer
I used a sling with my son, using different positions at different ages, according to what was comfortable at the time. I eventually bought a different backpack carrier when he really seemed to outgrow the sling. In our case, he was about a year old when I finally started using the backpack regularly. He was small for his age though, so that made front carrying possible for longer than most!

It depends on your carrier, but some front carriers and most back carriers recommend the baby be around 6 months old for the sake of spinal development. Slings tend to be better for young babies because they hold the babies in more natural positions. Young babies prefer to be curled up with their entire body supported, rather than stretched out or in a position with their legs dangling. Back carriers are generally better for older babies who are stable sitting on their own.

How did you handle a toddler and baby on your own during a long international flight?

L L

How did you handle having to fly on your own with them and luggage? If you had to connect to another flight, what did you do while you waited?

Answer
I've been flying with my three children for 10 years, since each was 4 months old. They are close in age, just over two years apart and we fly between Europe and California about twice a year, plus other flights.

Don't count on getting help from the airlines. As a Flight Attendant, I often tried to get help for parents, especially on their own, with multiple children and the request was always refused. It can't hurt to ask because I hear some airlines are better about this than others (including both of my employers). Also, for your departure city, find out if you can bring someone with you on a "gate pass". This means that one adult will be allowed to accompany you to the gate, including going through security. I have never been able to do this but again, asking can't hurt!

Absolutely, without a doubt, you need a *good* baby carrier. By definition, this should go to age 2 or 3. Fiddly front packs like the Bjorn wont cut it. I made sure the carrier could be used for both my younger two children. I used a ring sling but a wrap, pouch or front/back carrier like an Ergo or Becco can be used if your younger one can hold his head up.

I only took one stroller and one car seat. I always had a seat for each child. I would have gone crazy if I had had a child on my lap for so long. Also, as an ex-Flight Attendant, I knew this was safer. Air travel itself is safe so that's why babies are allowed in laps but for a few flights, I was pregnant so there wasn't really much of a lap anyway!

Bring more diapers than you think you'll need, about 1/3 more than your children usually use. Put in a plastic bag (about 10 in a bunch) and bind with rubber bands. This saves space in your carry-on.

Don't bring a purse. Take a tiny bag with essentials that goes around your neck (so you can throw it on while folding, opening the stroller, etc. Then instead of a diaper bag, take a backpack (or a diaper bag designed like back pack). You can actually take two if you can't get everything in one, a diaper bag that goes on the stroller and the back pack. I have a largish one. If placed on the floor, it goes up to my knee but doesn't have wheels. I sometimes had to take two, like when I flew with three in diapers once.

To check-in, I everything, including the carry-on's, stroller, car seat and luggage on the cart and pushed it with the older one(s) walking and the youngest in the baby carrier. Try to get some help at your departure airport, even if that person wont be issued a gate-pass. Once I "get rid" of the bags by checking them, then I'm okay. Remember to NOT check in any car seats as luggage. Gate-checking is better if you can't use your seat(s) on board. I also would arrange at least one or two car seats at my destination.

Arriving, I did the same. The baby went in the baby carrier and the older one either walked or sat in the stroller. Once we were at baggage claim, I would make the children wait well away from the bags to avoid injury. Often, my children would find some playmates at this point. If your older one especially finds a friend, ask the parents to keep an eye on him/them for you while you get your bags.

Don't be in a huge hurry and don't wait up front. Stay with your children and when you see a bag, then go up to the belt. Often, someone would help me. Sometimes I could see the bags coming out and then I'd know if I had to run up and get one.

Yes, you can be more liberal about accepting help inside the "secure" area of the airport. Once you're out of customs, this is a public area so be more on guard. After security at your departure point is when it starts. The only people you will meet are other passengers and employees and quite frankly, they couldn't go far with your kids anyway, even if they had evil intentions!

I actually found that we never really sat around between flights. By the time I got off the plane, got through immigration and sometimes customs, found my connecting gate, etc. even a 3 hour layover dissapated. They always want to stop and look at something, have to have a diaper change, etc. There are some children's play areas at some airports and we have done that but often they're too far away to be of much use. If you are a member of a frequent flyer club, you probably can bring your children to the lounge to wait but some are very quiet and child un-friendly.

Sometimes it just works better to find a restaurant and sit and rest. Look up your connection city's airport on the net and find out if there are any children's play areas, where they are and any restaurants, like McDonald's, which might have one too.

For more information, nine years ago I wrote an article on this subject. It's based on both my personal and professional experience of flying with children. It goes more into detail on packing and transporting car seats. It's totally non-commercial and other parents from around the world have contributed;

I have entered many websites about baby diaper bag like nacobabydiaperbag.com,but which style is a better choice I have no ideas.

Answer
it depends on how you live, and how you'll use it the most. As in if you'll be having it on your pram, if you'll be carrying it like a tote bag, if you'll be wanting a backpack, and if you want an in-built bottle carrier or a separate one, and if you want it to include a change-mat, or have a separate one. And on top of that there's personal style and taste to consider, as well as budget. On top of that, you can buy portable change mats or change mat wallets that have pockets for wipes, diapers and creams etc so you can just carry that for short trips, or if you're going out with someone else they can look after the big diaper bag and you just take the wallet and baby for a change. It's always good to get one that can fit a blanket, a spare set of clothes or 2, a couple of bibs, a spare pacifier, some toys as well as changing and feeding equipment. One that's easy to clean is a plus. And getting a wetbag for dirty cloth diapers if you're using them, or clothes/blankets that have been spat up on, or a diaper blowout/leak is always useful so everything else doesn't get stinky and dirty.

What size bag can I take as carry on?

I have a Jansport, 5200 cc backpack I was planning on taking on the plane as carry on. I don't have it fully packed. Will this fit in the overloader? I am flying on a continental flight from New York to San Francisco, than a United flight from San Francisco to Sydney, Australia. What is the size of the over head storage trays?

Answer
Yes, that will fit. The overhead storage is actually pretty big. When my husband, two kids, and I went on Emirates to and from Pakistan, I had this huge gym bag my husband had gotten with his purchase of Kenneth Cole Reaction. He also had his laptop. I had my tote purse and the baby bag along with a stroller. Up until we landed in Dubai for the stopover, we had put all of that above our seats for the storage. Emirates is a great company that provides strollers for children so they took care of it from that point until we got to Pakistan. So your bag should definately fit in there.

Do baby backpack carriers hurt your back?

Theres alot of trails around my new house and I want to do lots of walking/hiking with my 9 month old baby. I've been thinking a backpack carrier would be nice, but do they hurt your back?

would it be worth getting one?

Answer
Baby backpack carriers can hurt your back especially if your baby is very heavy. I think at 9 months your baby may be too big to carry on your back and may not fit into most back carriers. However, if you have a small baby, you may be able to do this. Your baby will be walking soon and not want to be carried on your back so you may only use the back pack carrier for a couple of months. In my opinion, I don't think it would be worth getting one at this point.

Things to do with a 14 month old baby in Hawaii?

Does anyone use a sling?

I want to get a sling with my current (3rd) baby when he's born. I tried the backpack-front pack (whatever it's called, lol) with my second child, and he was a big baby and was just too heavy--my back hurt every time I carried him in it. Does anyone know of a good sling? With my first (and second) we had the whole "travel system" (where the infant car seat straps into either the stroller or the carseat base in the car) and with this one, we bought just a regular infant car seat. I'm wondering what would be the best way to carry him when we go out, and a sling seems to make the most sense. Has anyone used one? I bought one at Target a few weeks ago and I hated it. I just could NOT get it adjusted properly, the strap seemed too short, etc. I realized after I'd taken it back that it probably didn't fit properly because I'm 35 weeks pregnant and my stomach was in the way, hah! Seriously though--even when my stomach is gone, I imagine it would still be hard to adjust the strap length, etc. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good sling (or other way of carrying the baby!)?

Answer
The Hotslings and Moby wraps are both great slings. they are very natural looking and don't have a lot of straps to adjust (It's all fabric) Perfect for a tiny baby. But it doesn't make the baby any lighter. I only used my sling for the first 2 months and then put him in the front carrier before he could sit up. He was 20 lbs. but it was easier than carrying around the infant seat everywhere.
