help with some poems? please?

emily

I got a plain, vintage, canvas mail bag for my backpack. its from the army store in my city, and so it hopefully wont fall apart like my other bags.

anyway, I am COVERING it in quotes, and some fabric paint. I want to put an acrostic poem on the inside flap. but I cant think of any, right now! and I cant find any online!

I really would appreciate your suggestions.

if you could think of one for
school, love, wolves, or emma, that would be awesome!

thanks! serioes answers only, please
um, guys, I have my heart set on an acrostic poem. and those were not acrostic poems, but they were nice.
an acrostic poem is something like

Sweet
Adorable
Rare
And
Honest

something like that. but my name is not Sarah. I need an acrostic poem for either school, love, wolves, emma, or pack. thanks!

p.s. acrostic poems are not tacky! I would rather put something that defines me, and the things I like, than come across as really smart, when people ask about the meaningless (to me) words on this inside of my bag.

lol, malcom. I cant put "hotter than poo" on my school bag
school starts on the third, and I am going into grade 8. it has to be appropriate, especially because my school is k-9, and I want to set a good example. its bad enough I wear ripped jeans, and tons of jewellery! I know it doesn't sound bad, but I the kids in my grade are super inappropriate, and I want to set me and my friends apart from them, show them the right way to behave; and that we are not all swearing, low riding jerks.

so basically, I want it to be appropriate, but also show that I am proud of who I am; a teenage girl, with tons of friends, who all love to laugh, and don't care about popularity.

sorry, if this doesn't make sense:(
thanks!
weird
outstanding
loving
family

proud
accepting
caring
kind

could I do something like this?
I put "sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast". thanks anyways

How to do Disney World on a budget?

backpack baby online

backpack baby online image

~*Absolute

I'm looking to take my family of four to Disney. It' a bit rushed because we just found out we're having another baby and want to do something fun for the kids before the baby's born. So anyway, we don't have much time to prepare so we're on a limited budget. I'm a little overwhelmed trying to find deals online. Everything is either outrageous or seems like a scam (like the hotels for 4 days 4 people for $250 if you listen to a 120 minute timeshare presentation). I wouldn't mind sitting through something like that if it was for real but I'm weary to trust stuff like that.

What about park passes? Is there any way to get them discounted?

Has anyone been there recently that has tips or tried any of these that actually were't a scam?

Answer
Tickets cost what they cost. Get them from disney.com or at the gate.

I am sure that you are aware of the cost of driving vs flying.

The only places you can really save money are food and accomodations. I have done Disney about as cheap as it can be done, but it is all still a tradeoff. For instance, when we are there for 6 or 7 days we like park hopper tickets. That adds $57 to the price of each ticket. But, we would offset that somewhat by putting a cooler in the car and having lunch in the car when we hopped around noon. My youngest would also get a 30 minute nap in his own car seat while we did that. It was pretty cute to drive to the new park and then wake him up with "Joe, do you want to go to Disney World?" But, for a 4 day trip I would not really do this. You will just want to do one park each day.

That 120 minute timeshare presentation is rougher than you think. They are not scams. But, you pretty much want to plan on killing half a day doing that, and it will suck. Now, maybe that is still worth it to you. It will start out very pleasant. However, 3 hours later as they are bringing out the "manager" to close the deal, it will seem like you will never get out of there. Also, be aware that if you get one day passes for your family, you will still want to buy 3 day passes. The difference in price between a 3 day and 4 day pass is currently $14 dollars. That half a day of timeshare hell will be the worst $56 deal of your vacation.

You can take snacks and sandwiches into the parks. Even if you still buy a meal and other stuff at the parks, having peanut putter sandwiches in your backpack, and some snack stuff, can save you more than $50 per day. (no glass, rolling coolers, things that need to be prepared, knives, booze, etc.) Keep it simple. A small backpack with some sandwiches, drink boxes, and snacks. Keep it light and know that you will still buy some stuff. Honestly, if you are planning to eat fast food anyway, you are not missing out on anything by skipping a hotdog or burger and fries for lunch. The fast food at Disney is nothing special.

Something to consider on hotel prices is the price to park your car at Disney. If you stay at a Disney hotel, you do not have to pay to park each day at the theme parks. If you drive in each day it is $14 to park. So, add that cost to the cost of any hotel room outside of Disney. Note that the non-disney "free shuttle" service offered by some offsite hotels is widely know to SUCK.

If you are flying down, staying at a Disney hotel means that you will not need to rent a car. Disney will take you from the airport to your Disney hotel for free, and get you back to the airport again. (Disney Magic Express, see the link below)

The best bargain food we have found at Disney World is at the Animal Kingdom. The Yak and Yeti counter service place has a side of chicken fried rice for $3.99. It is kind of a medium/large size chinese takeout box size thing. If that sounds like a refreshing kind of thing instead of burgers or turkey legs, you can get 4 of them and get change from a twenty. It won't stuff you like burgers and fries, but that can be a good thing, ya know? (see link below)

I am sorry that I don't have any secrets on how to do this for half the money, but I am being honest. If someone is telling you something else, they are not.

Now, figure out your hotel situation and get the reservations made. Dwelling on it will not change it. Find the price level/hotel level that suites you and move on. Then you can let the fun begin and start planning your days. Have fun, and I wish I was going.

What are some good tips for getting through an airport faster?

Bri S

I will be taking my first flight in October and I have only the slightest idea of what the hell I am doing, and if you have ever been through the Huntsville International Airport in Alabama it would be great if you could tell me how to get through it. THANKS!! :)

Answer
Sounds like your are going to Space Camp.

Several tips, I hope they help. I do apologize for the length. I'll assume you've never been in airport. Remember traveling is adventure-it both an art as well as science.

1) a) Look on your airlines website and see when they suggest you arrive at your departing airport. Remember the people are put on the plane 20-30 minutes before departure time. Departure time, is just that, the time the jetty is rolled back from the sealed aircraft and the engines are started. That means if you get to the gate at departure time-you be staring at the wrong side of a closed cockpit door.

b) Google the aiport you are departing from. The airport's website as well as sites such as IFLY.com will also have a recommendation for how early to get to airport. While your are there glance at how the airport is laid out and where you airline's check-in counter and gates typically are.

c) Take the longest estimate of the above and add thirty minutes. Add addtional time if the Department of homeland security has set airports to either a threat level of "High" or "Severe".

d) Do not use your additional time to park and walk to terminal. I mean for you to be standing at check-in counter at that time--not just pulling into the airport.

2) Plan ahead and print out your boarding passes as soon as your airline and your daily schedule permit you to. This is typically 24-hours prior to departure time. Print out at least two copies so if you forget one somewhere you have a handy spare.

3) If possible pay for you checked bags ahead of time. Print out the reciept (again at least two copies) and have them handy. The wieght limit on bags on most airlines is fifty pounds. Shoot for 45.

4) Use the "One bag there...two bags back" method. Try to go there with only one bag and your carry on. I always carry a folded up "sea bag" (I was in the navy. Sea bags are large heavy green canvas duffels with backpack straps that can fold up to about 1/2inch by 13inches by 15 inches) in my luggage. I put my dirty clothes in there while I am at my destination. My clean clothes stay clean and now I have an empty suitcase for all the stuff I pick up while I on vacation.

5) Make and list and organize your stuff carefully. Even something as silly and turning your blue jeans inside out and folding them saves room in a suitcase. Check out this site and experiment if your don't believe me. http://www.history.navy.mil/library/online/uniform_fold.htm

6) Make your carry on meets the size standards for your airline. Also make sure it light enough and manuveerable enough to sprint across the airport. Always have "tomorrow's change of clothes" in your carry on. Keep your identity documents, prescriptions, and tolietries in your carry on. The TSA has rules on how ounces of liquids (shampoo etc) you can have in your carry one. http://www.tsa.gov/311/index.shtm Make sure you do not have any prohibited items in your carry on bag. http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm

7) You are not allowed to carry soda through security. It is a liquid and they won't allow it (there are exceptions for contact lens solution and baby formula etc). There is NO rule against carrying a empty water bottle. My wife and I bought one liter plastic kegs at Wal-mart. They security no questions asked. We fill them at the water fountain on the other side of security and either make tea or lemonade.

8) Laptops and CPAP machines must be physically inspected. So able to break those out for the TSA guys at the check point. Don't bury it deep in your carry on.

9) Wear comfy shoes that can be taken off quickly at the check point. Also ditto for any belts you like to wear.

10) After you check your bags, dump all keys, cell phones, coins, and any other metal items into you carry on bag. This prevents you from having to do it at the security check point.

11) Ensure all luggage, purses, laptops, have a luggage tag on them. The airlines have them at the counter when you check or if you want a fancy one you can get them at Wal-mart.

12) If you have to connect to another flight, look at that airports website or map. Know the general lay out of it. For example if you are flying from Providence, RI to Huntsville, AL on NWA-you'll change planes in Detriot, MI. You can go the NWA website or the airport's website and get a glimspe of what is where.

So here's the process in brief. The week before you leave, make list of things you need and use that list to pack your one checked bag (goes under plane) and your one carry on (stays with you). Your carry on should have a snack, an empty plastic water bottle, a change of clothes and everything you need for 24-48 hours after you arrive. (If you bags get left behind, you can wait for the airline to reroute them to you.) If you are carrying a purse and/or laptop purge them of TSA prohibited items. The day before your flight pay your fee fo

HelllloOoO

what do i pack in a 3 month old nappy bag when im going out to my friends house for the whole day??
:) xx

Answer
- diapers (I usually put around 5 in my diaper bag at all times but more wouldn't hurt especially if you have room for them =) )

- wipes

- a couple toys

- extra change of clothes or two

- blanket

- a small towel to change on (I use this for insurance because sometimes my baby has a poopy diaper and I don't want to get it on their floor or table if the diaper leaks)

That's it! That's all my baby needs anyway. We have a small black backpack we got from the pediatrician and it works perfectly. Unisex too so my husband doesn't feel stupid with it lol.

when baby carrying, what sort of bag do you use?

slub

and do you have different bags for different carrying positions etc. ?

i'm talking about being able to at least carry one nappy, jar of food, bib, muslin, slim pack of wipes, bottle and powder.

sorry i should have made myself clearer. i mean when you're carrying your baby in a sling or baby bjorn or whatever.

Answer
I will be getting a backpack type thing for my next baby. I had a super cute diaper bag with one strap and I HATED it. It wouldnt stay on my shoulder when i would carry my son and then it would through off my balance let alone shift where all the weight of the bag and my son were. Get something that will stay on your back or shoulder. Thats my advice

It is spring now and I don't know what to wear! Capris, pants, sandals, tank tops?! It is the beginnning of spring, about low 60's and a little breezy! What do I do?

Answer
sk83r-
Pants- skinny bullhead jeans, you can buy them at pacsun
Shirts-Famous Stars and Straps shirts, DC shirts, Etnies shirts, Billabong shirts, or any other skating shirts.
I most likely recommend CCS
Shoes- In- fallen, etnies, dc, nikes
out of style- VANS
Jackets- Any baggy jacket. Boys jackets are the best. Try shopping at " freestlye " if you have one located in your area

Preppy-
Pants- American Eagle Outfitters, their jeans are very very comfortable and will fit perfectly, or buy abercrombie skinny jeans
Shirts- any type of baby doll shirts, make sure to wear an undershirt underneath if it's too low, or else you will get teased. Aroepostale and American eagle aren't good places to shop for shirts, the collars get wrinkly and unattractive.

Shoes- In- ballet flats, sandals w/ backs, and skating shoes, believe it or not.
out of style- NEVER wear tacky high heels or any type of boots. that will give you a bad name at school.
Crocs will NEVER be even close to " koolio " so don't EVER wear them.

Jackets- Hollister, Abercrombie & Fitch, or Aroepostale
and also a " guy friend's " baggy jacket

!out of style!-

crocs!!
mudd
gap
FAMILY DOLLAR!
Lisa Frank
Go Diego Go backpacks etc.
any type of plastic shoe

In Style-
hollister co.
A&F
American Eagle
Aroepostale
Dora the explorer backpack etc.
Spongebob Squarepants accessories etc.

Fact- a lot of people in middle school think that dora the explorer and spongebob are DA BOMB.

and "boots" the monkey from dora the explorer

where online can i find expensive infant baby boy clothing?

B W

I am wanting to find a place to buy a bundle of clothing but for a great cost for my brother and sister in law who are expecting there first child.. if anyone can help it would be appreciated....

Answer
salvation army or good will store stuff is usually cheap and clean because infants grow so fast they do not have time to wear it out. Yard sales and flea markets too. tell you sister most insurances not give out free car seats. Also any of these places you can find baby essentials cheap too like changing table, crib high chair, swing, jolly jumper, baby backpack, and all she would need to buy at say walmart would be a crib mattress. they grow too fast too buy expensive and these places you will often find quality clothes from baby gap, old navy, carter, Oshkosh etc.

plz help!!

ps. im in seventh grade and if u have any more organization tips too that would be great!!!

Answer
Have you asked if your school will lend you an extra set of textbooks to leave at home? Then you can have one to keep at school and another to use in doing homework. A lot of schools are allowing this option because so many children are damaging their backs.

Otherwise, see if you can purchase extra copies of the books to keep at home. Then you should be able to get rid of most of the weight.

Also, some students use rolling bags, like the kind that pilots and stewardesses and other frequent travellers use for their carry-on luggage on airplanes; they have wheels and a handle that can be pulled out to use or pushed in to save space. They may be a bit pricey, but it is much easier to push that weight around than it is to lug it on your back.

For the future, you might suggest that your school look into getting copies of textbooks on CDs for students to use at home. I know some kids who have classes where there are textbooks that are kept in the classroom for classroom use and the students are given the choice of a heavy textbook or a CD to use at home for homework. You might try suggesting that idea to the schoolboard. (They may really like it if you mention that it will lessen the likelyhood of them being sued for injuring some poor student's back from such heavy loads.)

Good luck.

I'm thinking of the Bjorn or the Ergo. I've used the Bjorn before and liked it. It seems like the Ergo can be used longer since it can switch to the back. Is this true? Which one did you prefer? Also, my back gets sore fairly easily so I'm looking for one that won't make my back ache. Thank you!

Answer
I did a lot of research for my family and a lot of reading on sites by mothers using them and came down to Moby Wrap or Ergo. My husband was afraid the Moby Wrap would unwrap on him (he's bad at knots...) so he wanted something with actual snaps and such (Ergo) and was willing to shell out the hundred or so dollars difference for that, so we got the Ergo. Before then we used an Infantismo with my daughter and my husband hated it, it hurt his back and was very uncomfortable.

The Ergo, we've used it with my 23lb toddler on his back and he found it very comfortable, and she liked it as well. We were going up and down hills too, so it's not like it was an easy walk we were doing! His back did not hurt afterwards, and he didn't feel like his center of gravity was compromised with her on his back (unlike a frame backpack he tried with her.) The other day we put our week old son in the Ergo using the newborn infant insert and he fell asleep, absolutely loving it, and my husband felt like he wasn't wearing anything it was so comfortable and held so close. A true measure of the comfort? Our son pooped. He doesn't poop unless he's completely comfortable. :)

So we went with the Ergo and love it. But I read a lot of good reports on the Moby as well and would have been willing to try that.

How did you handle a toddler and baby on your own during a long international flight?

L L

How did you handle having to fly on your own with them and luggage? If you had to connect to another flight, what did you do while you waited?

Answer
I've been flying with my three children for 10 years, since each was 4 months old. They are close in age, just over two years apart and we fly between Europe and California about twice a year, plus other flights.

Don't count on getting help from the airlines. As a Flight Attendant, I often tried to get help for parents, especially on their own, with multiple children and the request was always refused. It can't hurt to ask because I hear some airlines are better about this than others (including both of my employers). Also, for your departure city, find out if you can bring someone with you on a "gate pass". This means that one adult will be allowed to accompany you to the gate, including going through security. I have never been able to do this but again, asking can't hurt!

Absolutely, without a doubt, you need a *good* baby carrier. By definition, this should go to age 2 or 3. Fiddly front packs like the Bjorn wont cut it. I made sure the carrier could be used for both my younger two children. I used a ring sling but a wrap, pouch or front/back carrier like an Ergo or Becco can be used if your younger one can hold his head up.

I only took one stroller and one car seat. I always had a seat for each child. I would have gone crazy if I had had a child on my lap for so long. Also, as an ex-Flight Attendant, I knew this was safer. Air travel itself is safe so that's why babies are allowed in laps but for a few flights, I was pregnant so there wasn't really much of a lap anyway!

Bring more diapers than you think you'll need, about 1/3 more than your children usually use. Put in a plastic bag (about 10 in a bunch) and bind with rubber bands. This saves space in your carry-on.

Don't bring a purse. Take a tiny bag with essentials that goes around your neck (so you can throw it on while folding, opening the stroller, etc. Then instead of a diaper bag, take a backpack (or a diaper bag designed like back pack). You can actually take two if you can't get everything in one, a diaper bag that goes on the stroller and the back pack. I have a largish one. If placed on the floor, it goes up to my knee but doesn't have wheels. I sometimes had to take two, like when I flew with three in diapers once.

To check-in, I everything, including the carry-on's, stroller, car seat and luggage on the cart and pushed it with the older one(s) walking and the youngest in the baby carrier. Try to get some help at your departure airport, even if that person wont be issued a gate-pass. Once I "get rid" of the bags by checking them, then I'm okay. Remember to NOT check in any car seats as luggage. Gate-checking is better if you can't use your seat(s) on board. I also would arrange at least one or two car seats at my destination.

Arriving, I did the same. The baby went in the baby carrier and the older one either walked or sat in the stroller. Once we were at baggage claim, I would make the children wait well away from the bags to avoid injury. Often, my children would find some playmates at this point. If your older one especially finds a friend, ask the parents to keep an eye on him/them for you while you get your bags.

Don't be in a huge hurry and don't wait up front. Stay with your children and when you see a bag, then go up to the belt. Often, someone would help me. Sometimes I could see the bags coming out and then I'd know if I had to run up and get one.

Yes, you can be more liberal about accepting help inside the "secure" area of the airport. Once you're out of customs, this is a public area so be more on guard. After security at your departure point is when it starts. The only people you will meet are other passengers and employees and quite frankly, they couldn't go far with your kids anyway, even if they had evil intentions!

I actually found that we never really sat around between flights. By the time I got off the plane, got through immigration and sometimes customs, found my connecting gate, etc. even a 3 hour layover dissapated. They always want to stop and look at something, have to have a diaper change, etc. There are some children's play areas at some airports and we have done that but often they're too far away to be of much use. If you are a member of a frequent flyer club, you probably can bring your children to the lounge to wait but some are very quiet and child un-friendly.

Sometimes it just works better to find a restaurant and sit and rest. Look up your connection city's airport on the net and find out if there are any children's play areas, where they are and any restaurants, like McDonald's, which might have one too.

For more information, nine years ago I wrote an article on this subject. It's based on both my personal and professional experience of flying with children. It goes more into detail on packing and transporting car seats. It's totally non-commercial and other parents from around the world have contributed;

I am just wanting to know if anyone has any good tips for what to take along for our trip.

Answer
You don't say how old your infant is - and as you said infant and not baby, I would talk to your peditrician first and make sure they have had enough shots and are strong enough to go. Camping lends itself to misquitos bites, ticks and other things...

With that being said though - for slightly older babies - be sure to bring a baby backpack (for ages 6 months and up) keeps them elevated and allows for them to see everything better - also acts as a diaper bag. Jogger strollers are also a wonderful invention fo rthose trail that you can use them on.

A bassinet or portacrib - as they can't sleep in sleeping bags.

DIAPERS, DIAPERS & more DIAPERS as well as ziploc bags to seal them in while you are hiking, etc... since there may not be any garbage cans near and this will prevent a mess or smell in your diaper bag.

If you aren't breastfeeding - plenty of formula, bottles & BOTTLED water as you probably won't be able to boil water and you don't want them drinking tap water.

Can you use a stroller while hiking?

*My precio

I wanted to go hiking in a few months when it gets a little warmer but I have a 13 month baby. It would be uncomfortable to carry him the whole time, but i can't get a babysitter because all my family live out of the state. So can you use a stroller while hiking?

Answer
It depends.

Certainly a toddler (that's right you don't have a baby anymore!) can handle bouncing around in a stroller although if the terrain is too lumpy (covered in rocks, trees, etc.) you're going to struggle with a stroller. But if the hike is more like a hard-pack dirt path then definitely a stroller can be great!

I have a Bob stroller which I love. The bigger wheels make it easy to navigate obstacles on the path. They aren't cheap however :P I would definitely suggest investing in a decent jogger if you plan to do lots of hiking with it. Your traditional 4-wheel stroller (the kind you use at the mall) is probably going to struggle if you try to take it off-road.

I also have a Kelty backpack which kills - KILLS - my back so I also prefer the stroller. Our Kelty has almost never been used.

Come to think of it I've never seen the father of the baby push his baby around in a stroller. What's up with that?

Answer
Many fathers do push strollers. But I can tell you as a fairly tall woman that the height of the stroller handles means many of us are hunched over the whole time. It might be quite uncomfortable for men to push a stroller very much. I know men who prefer to carry the baby in a backpack.

What are some of the most effed up things you have caught your dog eating?

cjrossi

I'll start:

disposable razor, electrical wiring, crunched christmas ornaments, eyeglasses, TV remote

and I'd like to say "baby gate doorknob" except I didn't catch him eating it, until he pooped it out whole, after a trip to the vet.

it is amazing - you think you have completely cleared and puppy-proofed an area, and they seem to pull stuff out of thin air!
WOW. This has been enlightening, amusing, and in alot of cases, gross.

Thanks for sharing!

Answer
This particular over sized Boxer mix came out of a drug house in a big city. There was suspicion she had been used as a "test subject" for street drugs. She for sure had ISSUES, a few bolts loose and was a rampant chewer.

Her menu over her lifetime was:

A $100 Scientific Calculator (copped from a backpack)
Jewelry - anything she could steal off my dresser
Rare plant bulbs
A thermometer (that she found in a new house I just moved into - cause I didn't own one)
A 12' tree...chewed off at ground level
Her own poop
Money - paper or coin (anything she could reach on the table, or counter top.
Cat, dog, raccoon, cow and bird poop
Human poop (camping once.. I thought I was gonna die)
Multiple hoses
Parts of a broken light bulb
A "floater" she fished out of the kid's john
A USED feminine napkin *gasp*she snagged out of the weeds (on the side of the road) while on a walk...
My dad's cherished barrel cactus.
My grandson's plastic alligator
Bumble Bees / yellow jackets/ honey bees
Quail

BUT... WHAT ALMOST KILLED HER (besides ME)... was
A 2"x2" redwood rung off my deck railing. She chewed it out one summer day so she could poke her head out of the railing and watching me pull into the driveway. She was in the vets for almost a week being treated for that stunt. She lived...but just barely.

Oddly...she's now pushing 11 yrs old and sleeping on the rug right behind my computer chair. I didn't dare rehome her.. I was afraid someone would take her out and SHOOT HER. It wasn't her fault her brain was fried. Now...she's allllllll gray faced and moves with a hitch in her git-a-long. She still occasionally steals a grocery receipt if she can snag it...but it's more for attention then anything else...LOL *knock on wood*... she has not ruined anything of value in a long time.
.
.ADDED:
You guys mentioning furniture disasters -
A friend of mine went and got an adolescent, very rambunctious Boxer and for what ever BRAIN FART REASON...she left him home alone (.l-o-o-s-e in her house) about a week after she got him. When she got back he had pulled the cushions off her n-e-w couch! Starting on the front...he chewed a whole clear out the BACK of the couch! She called me for sympathy and all I could do was laugh until I cried......rotffffffffffff. Duh x 100...lol What WAS she thinking?

Ergo baby carrier vs. babyhawk mei tai?

Anna

I don't really like the backpack look of the ergo, and the mei tai looks more appealing to me, which one is more comfortable? do you recommend one over the other?

thanks

Answer
Ooh - tricky one! Some mums like one or other, some like either.
I like the Ergo because the buckles make it quick to put on, no long straps to drag on wet winter ground while tying (though tucking straps MT straps into your belt works while putting it on), padded waist helps transfer weight onto the hips so likely to be able to carry for longer (eg. 3-4 years old).

Babyhawk - lots of colourful options, more curvy mums often find them more comfotable with no buckles to dig into large boobs, pack up smaller due to less rigis waist.

Resale value is great on both slings so if you feel you've gone with the wrong one you'll recoup your money OK.

Perhaps check out if you have any sling enthusiasts locally so you can try them both on, or maybe a local sling lending library to try before you buy. Check out the link - might ne of help - certainly reviews somewhere on the site.

Advice or opinions about baby carriers (reviews?)?

LeaLea

Hi. My SO and I are doing the pre-baby shopping and having a hard time finding the right carrier. I guess we want one that does it all and is ergonomically friendly. Maybe that's too much to ask? We would prefer to be able to carry baby in front, on our backs, or on our hip - also we would like baby to be able to face us or face out when carried on the front. Lastly, something that has good back and hip support would be ideal since there may be times when we're wearing it for hours. Does anyone know of anything out there like this??

We have looked at Baby Bjorn, but that does not appear to be able to carry on the front AND on the back (backpack or piggyback style). Also, we found the ERGObaby, but that only allows baby to face you when riding in the front - baby can't face out. Also, while ERGO baby gets good reviews it doesn't appear suitable until the baby gets a bit bigger and we would like to only buy one carrier in stead of one for when it's a newborn and one for when it's a bit older.

Anyone find the perfect baby carrier for themselves? Something out there we've missed? Your input is appreciated - thanks!!

Answer
You might ike a Moby Wrap- it's very flexible and can do all the positions you mentioned.

Yesterday, I had to hold her while shopping in hardware stores because she insisted on opening packages or bottles if I let her down. The shopping carts can be very dirty in a hardware store.

Does anyone use a backpack baby carrier for their toddlers for shopping? I don't do much hiking, and I use a stroller to take her on walks. So I would just use it to take her where I don't want her to run around.

Is it safe to get into? Is there a risk of dropping her while putting the backpack on? Any other uses for this? Any suggestions for brands? I heard Tough Traveler is good. Thanks.

Answer
I love my backpack for shopping, and I can still carry my soon to be 3 year old. This is the one I have http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441776409&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302735239&bmUID=1160421939450 . We bought it almost 5 years ago when our oldest was the right size for it. It still looks brand new. I used it for shopping and long walks, my husband uses it for hiking. Have fun!

what is the best baby carrier for a 9month old baby?

Carla

I am thinking buying A BABY carrier for my 9 month old, thinking of using it for awhile. What is the best one out there?

Answer
Ergo.

it's a soft front or back pack...the newer model can also be used on the hip.

it is ergonomically designed for the wearer and the rider.

wearer - wears like a back pack, sternum belt, wide shoulder straps, thick lumbar supportive waist strap.

rider - baby sits in a more natural position where his/her weight is distributed across the butt and thighs... does not hang by the crotch like bjorns/snuggli type carriers

it goes up to 40lbs... though that recommendation is for the comfort of the adult, not because the straps, fabric, buckles can't hold anymore... one picture on their website is a 100lb woman in it!! I still use mine for my 44lb 4 yr old on odd occassions like when we've been at the zoo or the flea market for too long and she's tired, it folds down pretty well and I tuck it at the bottom of my backpack when we're having a big excursion like that.

ETA... for kelty fans - I can't tell, does the child sit in it - like in a real sitting position like the Ergo??

Q. I am 32 years old and 8 months pregnant with my first baby. I will be raising her on my own, and want to be the best mother I can be. I have read most of the books, researched a lot online, and still have many fears.

Any words of wisdom?

Answer
Congratulations! It seems you have done everything I have done when I had my son (now 5 y.o.) - books didn't help much⦠only gave me the basic idea on things. I did talk to parents online, there are message boards you can participate in and get advice from other parents.

Not everything that worked for others will work for you so it's best to keep an open mind, listen to your instincts and remember to rest physically and emotionally. If you can get any help of your friends to watch the baby so you could sleep - that will help you. I am still sleep deprived, five years later :).

If you happen to feel depressed after the delivery - a little baby blues are a normal thing as your hormones change, but if you feel the "blues" don't go away and starting to develop into a depression (lasting lets' say more than a month) - you may want to see a doctor and get her advice. I did get depressed after my son was born and it's hard caring for a baby when you're not feeling like doing anything at all...

People will tell you many, MANY things. Some will push their opinion onto you and some will make suggestions. It's best to keep an open mind. The way I looked at it - if this is something that my doctor tells me and I agree with it - that's the road I am going to take. If someone tells you smth outrageous and claims it works - use common sense and your best judgement. If ever in doubt - talking to other parents or a doctor [or both] usually provides enough useful information for you to make an educated decision.

Watch your budget - being a single mom can get tough financially. If you're planning on sending your child to day care - this can get a little pricey. What I learned from it - visit different day care centers, talk to teachers and ask questions. Walk through multiple rooms and review. If anything you don't like - move on to another center. And in my experience with childcare - you get what you pay for... Same goes for private babysitters and nannies â but I personally chose against hiring a nanny for safety reasons. I heard too many stories of abuse so I trust day care centers more because there is more structure there. And the day care center will be held accountable for every bump your child gets while in their care - so you know they will make sure to follow all the rules.

There's going to be lots of trial and error situations. As they say "it will get hard before it gets better" and with newborns it's very true. But even if you catch yourself thinking: "this will never end, I'll be stuck to this baby forever with no time for me" - no, you won't be. It's true that you will be glued to this child for the first year most likely and it will be hard to find time for yourself... But it's only until the baby starts walking, talking and etc... As the times goes by you will be getting your personal time back.

I agree with someone who said this earlier â take lots of pictures!

Wishing you the best of luck!

Ok, and here is the list of things I could not live without. Links are for information only â I am in no way soliciting any particular products, this is just a list of things I had and found they did work (for me). Maybe you will find it helpful.

- Enfamil formula (highly recommend if you choose to use formula).

- Gap backpack instead of a regular "diaper bag". I loved it - it looks great, not like a diaper bag, very roomy inside, convenient and the best thing - you throw it on your back, pick up the baby and off you go. Very easy.

The toddler will have his own seat, but I will be holding the baby. My questions are, should the toddler fly in his carseat, and if should we be taking a stroller to the gate (I have a double jogger).
Anyone who has gone through this, please give advice! This is not a vacation, it is for a cross country move so both carseats will need to go on the plane in some way.

Answer
Definitely strap the toddler into his seat and buckle him in. Don't get him out for any reason. Treat it like a car trip. Take a stroller to the gate, but I'd recommend just using a single stroller because they're easier to fold and deal with and get a sling or Bjorn for your infant. It'll be easier for everyone involved! Make sure to have new toys in a backpack for him. Think: a new box of crayons, coloring book and paper, play doh, little plastic animals and cars. One thing my grandmother did for me in a similar situation was to wrap little junky toys like the ones mentioned above and at certain time intervals I was allowed to open a new one. It made the trip go faster (according to my parents) and I only got them if I was behaving myself. Good luck!

I had rented a hospital grade breastpump with my first baby and would like to either buy or rent one again which ever is cheaper, I have 36DD breasts now and Im sure they will be bigger when I breastfeed so does anyone have any suggestions on an everyday use pump, Im really stumped on this!

Answer
I have a Medela Pump in Style ... This one to be exact: http://www.amazon.com/Medela-Style-Advanced-Breast-Backpack/dp/B0011E75RK

I love it. You can buy different size breastshields if the ones that come with the pump don't fit correctly. I have 36D breasts (up to an E when I was engorged) and I didn't have issues with the breastshields that come with the pump.

If you plan on pumping for a while ... purchasing a breast pump is a better deal than renting one. I bought mine at Babies R Us with a 20% off coupon and my insurance company has a $50 reimbursement deal for breast pumps that are purchased.

What type of baby sling works best?

tpds0830

So many to choose one.. how do I decide on the right one? I need one that can accommodate a newborn for nursing and hopefully I'll be able to use it as the baby grows. What type works best for you? Thanks!

PS.. I'm not looking for the "backpack" type. We have a structured one that we used for our eldest when he was big enough.

Answer
It's all about the baby.
It's just like diapers. You may think a certain one is best, but ultimately the baby will decide.

There are many to choose from.
For moms, a lot like the Sling.
There are simple material ones you can buy, with adjustable clips.
There are also padded ones, but some babies get too hot in them.

Then there are backpack, shoulder bags, hips bags.

Babies R Us has a nice selection of the slings. Most babies don't have a problem with them.
I would buy both, a plain material one and a padded one. They aren't too expensive either.

I really like the simple, one circle clip sling.

Have fun!

Kelty Kids has a backpack convertable stroller that is nice to use if you encounter stairs. My combi drags behind from my right hand, with my child flexed tightly in my left arm whenever there is no elevator around. The Kelty is 8lbs and around $125 -200 depending on the model you get from Sportsman Warehouse. There are businesses that will match prices in the area, such as Alpine Experience. I'm ready to advance to this type of system since I'm more active now six months post childbirth and this will allow me to go hiking. My Combi stroller/car seat was about $300, but came with a well-constructed car seat that easily came in and out of the base, which remained stationary in the car. This could easily be removed from the car and placed in my stroller in minutes.

Answer
If you can use it as a car seat and a stroller you are saving time and money.

What is your favorite "baby-wearing" sling?

Elliott's

I am looking into getting a new one, my son is almost 1. I have gone through three different slings/carriers, he outgrew some of them, the others were hard on my back. Had a front carrier sling when he was an infant, then switched to the backpack styles (like Bjorn), but now I am looking at maybe a Moby, Peanut Shell, K'Tan, Kangaroo Carrier, etc...

I am kind of sick of wasting money on ones that don't work/hurt.

Advice, tips, especially for older babies? Which carrier do you prefer?

Answer
We had some issues with hating carriers after a short time (especially since our son, born tiny, has ended up being rather large.) It's only recently that I figured out that if you GO to Baby's R Us and ask a manager, they will send someone over to the carrier aisle to unpack and let you try any carrier they sell. It takes a while, obviously, but we brought our son and really took our time over it this last time.

We were looking for a backpack and ended up buying the Kelty TC 2.1 and could not be happier with it - I know you're not looking for a backpack style carrier, but if your baby is getting over 20-22 pounds, it's worth checking out. It is very adjustable, and acts basically exactly like a hiking pack, except with a space for a baby.

Any parenting advice please?

Very easy.
(I tried to find a link but they don't sell them anymore...It used to be in "Diaper Bags" section on Gap website...)

Do I still need to give her a gift at her baby shower?

I'm co-hosting a baby shower for a friend who is having twins. It is a couple's shower, and I'm hosting along with 3 other women.

I have 2 kids and I'm giving my friend all of our hand-me-downs. She wants them, I checked first. :)

I'm giving her a $200 bassinet, $170 Graco swing, 2 bouncy infant chairs (the ones that recline), baby clothes, a diaper bag, bottles, 1 infant sling (the one you put over your shoulder and it cradles the baby by your chest, 1 infant backpack carrier, and a booster seat. There might be more stuff, I just can't remember now.

This is all stuff my husband and I would have sold if we weren't giving it to them. Do we still need to get them baby shower gifts?

Answer
No, all that plus hosting the shower is enough. When the baby is born, you could get her a little token thing if you want, but not necessary.

Things you wished you registered for/bought?

Loving Bab

I'm finishing up my registries (two), mostly because I am bored and have already rearranged the baby's room, lol.....and was just wondering if there was anything you ladies forgot to register for or something that you bought later on that you wish you had earlier...thanks :)

Answer
Well my oldest is now 7 years old. I had a small medium sized diaper bag, and a large diaper bag. Honestly you would be better off getting a sturdy backpack, because you're going to have a diaper bag for at least 2-3 years. I got tired of hauling my purse and the diaper bag around, so I just got a really nice backpack to keep everything in. You're going to carry around diapers, wipes, diaper rash cream, possibly bottles & formula, toys, to keep your bub happy while your out and about. It's better to just keep it in one bag (IMO).

2: A good quality swing. I was stupid and bought a battery operated one. It ate up D cell batteries like you wouldn't believe. I would invest in a good quality electric baby swing. My advice is to get one that swings from side to side instead of backward & forward. It's the "natural" movement of the side to side that is most soothing to babies.

3: Invest in onesies, sleepers, t-shirts, pants & shorts with an elastic waist versus snaps. They will be your very best friend. During the first year of life, babies don't really wear very much.

4:Bibs! Invest in some non-cloth bibs. They will stain your child's clothing. Something similar to this:http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2827339
These catch food, and they are really easy to clean. These we're a life saver for me. Please don't get bibs with a tie back, get one with a velcro enclosure. The ties can be a choking hazard.

5: If you're making the choice to formula feed I HIGHLY recommend anti-colic & gas bottle. Don't go cheap on these. I used Dr. Brown's bottles for my child, and he did great with them. The only con that I saw was that there we're tons of parts to clean. I also recommend the Playtex Vent Aire. Less expensive, and easier to clean. My friend used these with her multiples. If your making the choice to breast feed, then I highly recommend called: The Mommy Cover (I know I will get thumbs down). http://www.joiaproducts.com/ My other friend has one of these, and she LOVES it.

6: Invest in used books, music & cd's and toys for sensory development. My friend with the multiples HIGHLY recommends the "Your Baby Can Read". Her twins are 14 months old, and doing really well with this product. They love their music time, and reading time before bed.
Their language, motor skills, and receptive language skills are off the charts. (She's sitting right next to me as I am typing this).

7: A good stroller. I can't stress the words A GOOD STROLLER. This will be your best friend when your shopping, walking in the mall, toting your babies in the airport etc. Don't be afraid to buy a more expensive one. I recommend this one: http://www.target.com/Kolcraft-Universal-Infant-Seat-Carrier/dp/B001FCM24E/ref=br_1_4?ie=UTF8&frombrowse=1&qid=1278382792&searchView=grid5&sr=1-4&node=13691271&searchRank=pmrank&searchPage=1&rh=&searchSize=30&id=Kolcraft%20Universal%20Infant%20Seat%20Carrier&searchBinNameList=style_name%2Ctarget_com_brand-bin%2Ctarget_com_primary_color-bin%2Cprice
This one is light weight, and you can fit just about any car seat on there. I loved mine.

Well I hope I've helped you with your question. Good luck!
