Does anyone know what the most comfortable BABY backpack carrier is?

Q.

Answer
Mobywraps are great. They hold the baby in the correct position and helps protect their spine. It's really comfortable to wear as well as it goes over both shoulders.
http://www.mobywrap.com/

The Ergo is really great as well it holds baby in the same position as the Mobywrap but is a lot easier to get on without all the wrapping. It holds a baby up to 18kg (approx 40lbs). It's also really comfortable as it spreads the baby's weight over your hips and shoulders so your back doesn't feel the weight.

Do baby backpack carriers hurt your back?

Q. Theres alot of trails around my new house and I want to do lots of walking/hiking with my 9 month old baby. I've been thinking a backpack carrier would be nice, but do they hurt your back?

would it be worth getting one?

Answer
Baby backpack carriers can hurt your back especially if your baby is very heavy. I think at 9 months your baby may be too big to carry on your back and may not fit into most back carriers. However, if you have a small baby, you may be able to do this. Your baby will be walking soon and not want to be carried on your back so you may only use the back pack carrier for a couple of months. In my opinion, I don't think it would be worth getting one at this point.

Suggestions for a baby/toddler backpack?

Silly Momm

My husband and I are planning on doing some camping/backpacking once the weather warms up (it's still snowing where we live and we're beginning to wonder what Spring is) and we are in need of a baby/toddler backpack. My son is 10 months old and weighs in at a nice, healthy 35 pounds so an INFANT carrier is out of the question. He is much to heavy for those. I am referring to the ones with a large frame that carry ~50 pounds or more. I have no idea what names are good and reliable and research I've done hasn't turned up very good answers. Anyone with a suggestion, please let me hear it! Thanks!

Answer
We have a Kelty Kids backpack. It is wonderful. It is quite comfortable to wear, easy to put on and my son loves being in it (he's 14 months and around 25-30lbs). We camp and it is a lifesaver --- we bought it to use in place of our Ergo carrier on long hikes/camping.

It is like this one:

We managed to find a gently used one on craiglist for about half of the new price.

What are the main things to buy when you have your first baby?

Q.

Answer
A List of Things to Buy before Baby comes home

Baby Carrier or Sling:
There are several different products out there that allow you to carry your baby close to you, and keep your hands free for working around the house, shopping, or just going out and about. The carriers fit similar to a non-frame backpack, with straps going over both shoulders, while the slings usually fit over one shoulder. Baby Bjorn, which first launched in 1973, is probably the best known baby carrier name brands, but there are several different manufacturers out there, and prices range from $25 - $150.

Bassinet:
This is an optional baby item that I would recommend thinking about. While some moms believe they are unnecessary, ours was wonderful to have the first six weeks. Bassinets are small and easily moved, so baby (or, in our case, babies) can sleep peacefully wherever you are. Invest in one with wheels so that baby can âfollowâ you from room to room during your day.

Bath Soap, Shampoo, Lotion and Powder:
There are infant washes, shampoos and lotions that are gentler for baby than other types of body washes and shampoos. If you're looking for shampoo, soap and lotions from the store, we highly recommend either the Johnson or Baby Magic brands â calming lavender scent! If you prefer organic and 100% natural ingrediants, Grandma El's shampoo and baby wash is an excellent choice. Check with your pediatrician as to how often you should bathe baby during the first few weeks.

Bathtub:
While you may be able to begin bathing baby in the kitchen sink, thereâs going to be a period after they outgrow the sink and before they can sit in the bathtub on their own. There are several types of bathtubs and bath mats available. You can buy a basic bathtub, or purchase a more complex set up. For instance, Safety 1st has a 4-in-1 bathtub that begins as a mesh bath sling, then converts into an infant bath with sling, then a bath ring seat and finally to a 2-year toddler tub. Thereâs also a Baby Bath Center that has a battery-operated spa and shower that gives your baby a soothing whirlpool bath and a gentle shower spray for rinsing hair

Books:
Reading to baby, even when baby is only hours old, is a great bonding experience. Book reading provides security, comfort, one-on-one time, a great chance to communicate, a good base for vocabulary, and visual and mental stimulation. Studies show a direct correlation between language skills â and some studies suggest intelligence â and how many words a baby hears each day. There are many ways to talk to your baby, and reading is one of them, especially if you really like to narrate the books you read. If youâd rather not spend your downtime reading Three Little Pigs to your newborn, read the paper, magazine, or your current book. The important thing is baby hearing your voice, and not necessarily the words you are saying. You can probably get away with this until baby is about four months old, when they start getting interested in whatâs actually one the pages youâre reading.

Bottles:
Donât go overboard here. Different brands of bottles have different nipples, and some babies just arenât able to latch on to certain brands. Our boys could not latch on to one of the most popular (and most expensive) brands of nipples and bottles out there, which were billed as â Iâd recommend buying two or three of one or two different types, see what works (and whatâs preferred) and go from there.

Bouncy Chair:
There is another wide variety of options for you to choose from here. The range includes âbouncerâ chairs designed especially for infants to chairs where the seat can be laid back for infants, and then raised into sitting positions as baby gets older. We opted for the 3-in-1 Fisher Price chair. It was a stationary vibrating chair with a toy bar when the guys were infants and then converted into a rocker with a toy bar and âbeltâ when they could sit up, and a freestanding chair that they used until they were two. For the same price of a bouncer, we thought this was a better investment. Whichever chair or bouncer you choose will be a life saver for things like taking a shower, folding laundry, cooking dinner â and other times that you arenât able to hold baby, but want him to be nearby. Bouncers have a short (but very useful) life, and baby will outgrow his or her single-use bouncer at about three months â at about the time their necks will be strong enough for stationary exercisers, jumperoos, and swings.

Changing Table:
My sister-in-law told me that a changing table was the most important thing I could buy for the guysâ room, and I am so glad I listened to her! Like any other baby item, there is a huge variety to choose from. You can purchase 'just' a changing tables or purcase a changing table that also serve as a dresser, bookshelf, and closet. There are some âall-in-oneâ that incorporates the changing table into the framework of a crib or bookshelf. Whichever you decide to get, I recommend buying a âsturdyâ changing table, as it will save your back (and all the backs that change babyâs diapers) not only in the infant stage, but through toddlerhood, too (anywhere from 18 months to 3 years, depending on how potty training and pull-ups go). Some of the spindle-legs and wicker changing tables (to name two) have a maximum weight of 20 lbs or so â which baby will quickly outgrow. Itâs amazing how much easier life becomes when you have a changing table to rely on, instead of tables, beds, and the floor.

Cloth Diapers â for you not for baby:
YOU NEED THESE even if you use disposable diapers. These arenât for baby to wear, but for you to use for just about anything â burping, spills, cleaning up spit up, roll up to use as head and neck supports â you name it. Once you get past the infant stage, they still come in handy. The soft feel l makes it nice to use against babyâs skin, and their larger size is much better than depending on washcloths and dishtowels.

Clothes:
Baby needs to wear something! Iâll say it here, but youâll do it anyway â be wary of overbuying for sizes 0-3 months. This size usually is up to 12 lbs, which happens fairly quickly. Stock up on onesies and sleepers (which they will spend most of their time in, anyway), and leave the buttons, shoes, and hard to get into clothes for when baby is 3 months old and older. You donât want to spend your baby money on clothes theyâll outgrow in about two months.
Co-Sleeper or Pak ân Play:

Co-sleeper or Pak 'n Play
There are two great options to cosleep with baby.

Products like the Family Bed Co-Sleeper safely turn a regular bed into a family bed. The Family Bed Co-sleeper offers a comfortable (and washable) pad for dad, mom, and baby to sleep on, while the bolster keeps baby from rolling off. When looking for a family bed co-sleeper, make sure that the bolster is used without straps, buckles, without cumbersome pillows.

A bedside cosleeper is a great way to keep your baby at armâs reach, but out of your bed. You can also remove the sleeping area and use the base as a play pen, if youâd like. I would definitely go for the co-sleeper if you have twins (it has a sturdier bed where the babies sleep, and you don't have to 'reinforce' the bed with cardboard).

Pak ân Plays come with a variety of options as well. Ours had a bassinet and a changing table included. Once the guys outgrew their bassinet, we had them sleep in the pak ân play in the living room, and the co-sleeper in our bedroom. We never did use the play pen features.

Both fold up fairly easily so that you can take them with you when you travel. The big difference between the two is that a co-sleeper has one side that drops down, allowing baby to be at the same heighth as your bed, without having a significant barrier between the two of you that you have to navigate to put baby in, or take baby out, while lying in bed. Also, we found that the co-sleeper was significantly sturdier than the pak 'n play.

Crib:
This one is iffy to have before baby comes home if you plan to cosleep or use a bassinet for the first few weeks, and a must if you intend on putting baby to sleep in the crib as soon as he or she comes home. While itâs great to have âcribâ crossed off your list before baby comes home, if youâre going to be co-sleeping or using a cradle or bassinet, you might want to wait until baby is home. There are more than a few parents that decorated their babyâs nursery before baby came home, only to discover it didnât âmatchâ their babyâs personality. Many families co-sleep with baby during the first year, and skip the crib all together, moving right into a toddler bed.

There are almost as many options for cribs as there are for car seats. You can buy one that serves only as a crib, or one that converts into a toddler bed and then into a twin bed. Hand-me-down cribs are great family heirlooms, but be safety conscious. Are the slates to far apart? Are there any broken or damaged pieces? Is anything painted with lead paint?

Do we really need a daddy diaper bag?

Q. I am 36 weeks pregnant and pretty much have everything but there are a few last things that I was planning on to get before the baby comes.

One of the things that wasn't fulfilled in the baby registry is the "Daddy Diaper Bag". Do you think I really need it? Or is it more of a luxury that isn't needed?

I am having a girl and the baby diaper bag that we do already have a diaper bag that is 100% pink. My husband would probably want to use a non-pinkish bag if he's having a Daddy-Daughter Day. But he says that it's not completely necessary. It's just something that is nice to have.

Does anyone out there have a "Daddy Diaper Bag"? Is it something that you used often? Was it something liked enough by your husband that made him happy?

Thanks so much!

Sincerely,
A New Mommy

Answer
A regular backpack works just as well. If you already have something that's suitable there's absolutely no reason to go buy another bag just for this purpose.

Answer
People are not using bumpers anymore because some studies are trying to say they can cause SIDS. I don't know if I agree with that or not, but fyi.
I actually like and use TONS of blankets of different thickness and texture.
Similac bottles are awesome! They cost a lot, but they work (less gas, etc. and my baby likes that kind of nipple.
Bottle warmers don't work. Run the bottle under hot water, or like the rest of us, microwave. They only suppose to be room temperature, so if there is a "hot" spot, it should just be "warm". Had 3 babies and never had a problem.
Desitin ROCKS!
Actually, I would get more washcloths...in the beginning you'll be using them for butt and face, throwing the butt ones away, then realizing you have a pile for butt and another pile for face! Can actually use more than 4.
Bassinets are a waste of money...baby isn't in it long (if at all). Use the play pack.
Read up on it...baby laundry soap is pointless. I confirmed this when I washed all my newborns clothes with my generic laundry soap. She had sensitive skin and STILL...ZERO problems with the detergent.
Diapers...you cannot predict how many you will use. I had 2 kids in the 6lb range that went through only one bag of newborn diapers. My 3rd, weighing 5 lb 7 is on her 3rd bag of preemies I wasn't expecting to buy. Luvs and Huggies are the best.
After raising 2 kids and having a 3rd, I've learned the hard way that things don't last. For this one, I bought ALL plastic kid size drawers. But yes, I at least got them in pretty girl colors, but I'm not going to care when she decides to destroy it all.
Onesies are nice but you won't need 36 of them.
Formula you don't want to buy ahead because you don't know if your baby will have allergies. I think most people will start their baby on Similac, but I don't think there are any bad brands out there. Good luck!

Anyone know how to make a regular backpack into a roller backpack?

Monica Sar

Strange question, but I need to find a way to convert regular backpacks into roller backpacks. Our school store sells our school logo-ed backpacks, and we need to convert some into roller backpacks. Does anyone out there know of a company that sells a kit to add the rollers and the handle yourself? Many thanks for any assistance!!!

Answer

This should be an easy task. you will need a round shaft around 5
inches longer than the Backpack be wide...

If you are able to find an old baby stroller or a similar object - just remove the wheels w / shaft (thats with ) If the shaft be longer than
the five inches longer than the,..you,..understand,.?! Naturally, the shaft must be rounded. Make holes in the backpack on the downside that would be positioned on your back,..reinforce / strengthen the
holes area. Put the wheels on. they ought be around 3 - 4 inches.

What do you do for a handle,.? Aaahhaa,.?! You may use an
old handle from a handbag or large purse - use rope material -
make same long enough so as to not lean, or hunch over. Reinforce
the the area around the holes you made,..Would it not be better to buy a cheaper roller Backpack,..?

Anyway, you may find a stiff - or, mildly stiff piece of thicker wire
run same through the handle, or grip,..you're set. You've made a roller backpack,..

Answer
Yaaaa...you don't need 95% of that stuff...lol

Okay....so here is what I needed and used in the 1st week

Infant car seat
Stroller (I actually had 2...1 regular and 1 jogger..but the jogger was borrowed...I didn't need it, but was super glad I had it as it was easier to work with on hills and in the park etc)
Diaper bag
Diapers and wipes
Sleepers/onesies/socks/pants/shirts any other clothing you want/need
Crib and crib sheets
Monitor
Bassinette or playyard or cradle...whatever you want to use while baby is in your room beside your bed - i still don't own a playyard, we used a borrowed cradle and that was fine...my son is 16 months...sometimes I wish I had a playyard, but you definitely do not need one
Breast pump and storage bags
Bottles/nipples (if you are breastfeeding, you only need 1 or 2 bottles...I had 3 and never opened the 3rd bottle...I only used 1 and left 1 at my mom's house so that if she was watching him she could put frozen breastmilk in the bottle...hence the breast pump
They don't need toys for some time...they don't play with toys in the first week...but it is nice to have some car seat toys for entertainment
A play mat is very nice to have
Soothers (2 or 3)
Soother clip
Vitamin D drops
Bouncer/swing...I had both, but only needed 1..he would sleep in the swing, it was awesome!
Breast pads and cream (For sore nipples)
Burp cloths...but you can use old towels too
Infant Bathtub (very cheep...just a regular one, you don't need the ones with hoses/showers etc)
Wash cloths/towels..again you can use regular ones
Mild baby bath soap
Gripe Water (excellent for gas etc) non-alcoholic
Cornstarch (Not peneten etc for diaper rash) this works way better and is much milder on skin!

Hmmmm...that is about it!!

There are things that are nice to have...and you can totally decide and ask for those things too...but the must haves are above!

Hope this helps!

I have a baby coming soon what are some of the things I will need? here is a list of what I have aready.?

International travel with babies?

Q. Planning on flying from the US to South East Asia with a 3 year old and a year old. Sigh.... what can I do to make this trip easier? It'll be Washington DC - NY - Frankfurt - Singapore - Surabaya, Indonesia with SQ (Singapore Airlines). Has anyone made a similar trip? How do you handle the babies?
Thanks in advance.

Answer
I had to do a lot of plane hopping with my little ones when I flew to Ireland (four planes to get there, five planes to get home). They were a bit older - but we also take frequent trips, and have been flying with the kids since they were infants.

I disagree with the other commenter. I never check my luggage. When jumping that many planes, there is a greater chance the airline will "lose" your bags. It is also a pain to wait for the luggage to come around when you have little ones who may be cranky or overstimulated. But if you are traveling alone, then checking it may be your best option, as you won't have to struggle with kids and bags through the airport. Just makes sure you pack a backpack or small carryon bag with extra clothes (at least one set for every person traveling) and any and ALL important supplies - diapers, medication, money, passports... Keep that with you, so if your luggage is lost, you are not stuck with nothing.

For the baby, make sure you have a pacifier or bottle, or something they can suck on while the plane is ascending or descending. The air pressure can hurt their ears, and the sucking will cause that pressure to pop. Some suckers might also be good, if the older child complains about the pressure.

Bring snack foods - granola bars, fruit, crackers... And a water bottle. Fill the water bottle before you get on the plane. But be careful not to let the kids eat and eat and eat out of boredom. There is nothing worse than a kid barfing on a plane.

Bring activities and toys - but nothing noisy that will disturb other flyers or make a mess (it's not easy cleaning up a tiny space with babies in the way). Coloring books and crayons for the older child. If your youngest is going to be a lap baby, then be prepared for another passenger being seated with you. If possible, try to keep the aisle seat, so you can get your kids to the bathroom without having to inconvenience anyone else.

Oh, and try not to stress out if your kids do get cranky and make a fuss. I can't recall any flights I have ever been on that there wasn't a baby crying or a child whining. It happens, and most people will be understanding. Those who aren't, well, ignore them. Just concentrate on your children.

Japanese Beaded Characters..that hang from purses, backpacks, etc?

Q. My mother in law went to Japan a few months ago and got a purse and she bought these little beaded characters that clipped on the zipper. They are made of crystal like beads and they are sometimes characters or just objects. Anyway, I want to try and find some online but I don't know what they are called. Also, any website that sells Japanese type accessories or baby clothing...that would also be helpful...

Answer
I buy a lot of those things at this website below (Japanese store that ships to the USA....I always receive my goods pretty fast):

Men with baby carrier?

chicabonit

My husband has no problem with wearing a baby carrier (with one of our babies in it of course) in public. He prefers type with the baby on the front because he can't see the baby when it is in the "backpack" style carrier. We have twins and went to a housewarming for a friend. We live in New York, so we took the subway - each of us with one of our boys in the carrier on the front. When we arrived, I noticed a few women snickering about something, but thought nothing of it. Later, my friend told me they were commenting about how "stupid" my husband looked with the baby carrier, and they are only for women?? Personally, I find it cute - and it is the most convenient - and safest - way to transport our children on the subway. What do you think of men wearing a baby carrier?

Answer
I think the people at the party need to grow up. Men are just a nurturing as women. We are always pushed into roles of violence and disregard. A carrier is a great way to bond with the baby. Not only is it safe as you mentioned, its hands free living. Why is it both parents created the baby, but only one is allowed to care for him/her? I hope you won't continue to surround yourself with these negative neanderthals. Congrats on the twins also.

Can you recommend a Baby Carrier?

Mommy...LT

I'm rather petite and am having trouble finding one that fits. I tried a wrap type one, and one by infantino. The wrap one is way too complicated and is in a stretchy fabric that after 5 minutes it's too stretched out to hold the baby. The infantino one would be good, but even with the straps in the smallest position my baby is still too far from my body.

I'm just interested in forward facing and tummy facing, not a cradle / nursing type position.

Answer
Check out the Ergo Baby Carrier. It's a soft structured carrier, very similar to the Bjorn in appearance, but it can be used as a backpack carrier, a front carrier (facing in AND facing out-- though in any carrier, facing out puts more strain on YOUR back), hip carries, etc. I am not sure how well it will work for a petite momma, I am 5'4" and love it. I can and do use it with my almost 4 year old, and with my 1 year old very comfortable. They are also man-friendly because they aren't girly prints. www.ergobabycarrier.com
If you like the style of the infantino, there are two options... a ring sling, which is adjustable, and a pouch, which is sized to fit you. Both are fairly easy to make if you have a sewing machine, but if not, you can buy one. I like to shop at www.attachedtobaby.com, they carry every type of carrier out there, though not every brand, or every style within a brand (so be sure to do a search if you like a particular style, but want to see if they have different fabric choices). My favorite ring sling is www.rockinbabysling. com, my favorite pouches are www.goo-ga.com or www.hotsling.com. These are great for smaller babies, or quick trips with an older baby/toddler.
Sounds to me like you tried the Ultimate Baby Wrap? That's a VERY stretchy wrap, and really isn't a good determination of how you'd like other wraps, particularly german woven wraps. If you liked the style and general feel of the wrap, look in the woven wrap section at attached to baby. These are my favorite carriers, my preference is for Didymos. They are versatile (tons of positions to use), and superior in comfort to just about anything, but they are hard to learn to use.
Another option is a Mei Tai carrier. Very pretty, very easy to use, very versatile. My favorite brand is www.babyhawk.com or www.meitaibaby.com.

What is your favorite "baby-wearing" sling?

Q. I am looking into getting a new one, my son is almost 1. I have gone through three different slings/carriers, he outgrew some of them, the others were hard on my back. Had a front carrier sling when he was an infant, then switched to the backpack styles (like Bjorn), but now I am looking at maybe a Moby, Peanut Shell, K'Tan, Kangaroo Carrier, etc...

I am kind of sick of wasting money on ones that don't work/hurt.

Advice, tips, especially for older babies? Which carrier do you prefer?

Answer
We had some issues with hating carriers after a short time (especially since our son, born tiny, has ended up being rather large.) It's only recently that I figured out that if you GO to Baby's R Us and ask a manager, they will send someone over to the carrier aisle to unpack and let you try any carrier they sell. It takes a while, obviously, but we brought our son and really took our time over it this last time.

We were looking for a backpack and ended up buying the Kelty TC 2.1 and could not be happier with it - I know you're not looking for a backpack style carrier, but if your baby is getting over 20-22 pounds, it's worth checking out. It is very adjustable, and acts basically exactly like a hiking pack, except with a space for a baby.

Good Hiking Pack for Kids?

Q. We're interested in getting a sturdy backpack for our oldest daughter. I'm willing to spend around 100-150 dollars if I know that it can be passed down through all 3 of our kids until it's completely out grown by all of them. I'd rather an external frame pack (it's what I'm familiar with) but if you know a really high quality internal frame I'll take it into consideration.

The kids right now are 7, 5, and 2 years old. We're thinking our first hike-in trip will be in 2 or 3 years when the little one is old enough to walk the trail by herself. My husband and I would bear the brunt of the gear, the oldest a little gear in the pack we're looking for, the middle one some dry food in a regular book-bag, and the youngest would just walk without anything.

Just so no one freaks out, we're not being unreasonable in our plans. My husband is an Eagle Scout and is an experienced hiker. I have only done drive-up campsites but have been camping since I was a baby and spent some time in the Army so I know how it feels to haul 70lbs of gear over several miles. As a family, we did some 1 mile hikes last year when the middle kid was 4 years old and we currently do 2-3 mile day hikes every few weeks, so we know that a 5 year old can keep up as long as you don't push too hard. In fact, this weekend we did a 3 mile 200 vertical foot trail with the Big Girls walking, the little one was carried in a pack, and finished in just over an hour.

All that aside what I'm looking for is a good quality, durable, external frame pack for a kid in the 9-11 year old range.

Answer
With the exception of the 7 year old they are to young yet for any large capacity back packs so simple day packs that you can get at any sporting goods supplier will do. In that pack they should carry some water, some snacks, a flash light, a whistle, a space blanket, a fire starter, a multitool, a signal mirror and a two way radio (and know how to use them).

Long treks 2-3 years from now? your eldest could probably use a JanSport Scout Pack or the Kelty Jr. Pack and be able to carry around 25lbs on an external frame pack. However for a young frame internal frame packs are better to use for balance, control and comfort and instead of carrying the weight of a metal frame they can carry more gear they need. There are many high quality packs and you should try before you buy, rent them if you can. REI is one place that rents gear and they have reviews available for the gear the do sell. Why is my baby trying to kill me?

chloe

She's a sweet adorable baby, who loves everyone. She likes to hug and kiss, and cuddle, and she's such a good baby but..

She's almost 10 months, and still wakes up every hour or two at night to nurse. She hardly sleeps all day, and when she does, I have to be next to her because she won't sleep in her crib EVER, and I don't want her to fall of the bed.
In order for her to have her solids, i have to sing dance, and tell her stories, or she won't eat.
She won't stay in her playpen for more than 3 minutes, she won't sit in her high chair, or in her crib. I have to cook, clean and eat while holding her in my arms. I guess she's teething now, because it's gotten a little worse, and I feel like pulling my hair out.
I get no sleep, no time to eat, or take care of myself at all. I have no time for anything at all, not even my poor husband, and basically everything I do, has to be done with a baby hanging from my breast.

This is my first baby. Are all babies like that?
Adrianne, I'm not asking for your sympathy, I just wanted to know if all babies are so difficult. And I know my precious little angel isn't trying to kill me. I'm joking. Relax ok!
LG, thank you so much, I never expected such wonderful and understanding words from a person that doesn't have kids. You're going to make a great father one day.
Tanya, Thank you thank you, thank you!! I checked out the link you gave me, and I thought they were talking about my baby. I feel so much better having read that it's not my fault, and I'm not spoiling her. I could just hug you, and Dr Sears!

Answer
#1 SLEEP
--------------------
Baby proof your bed, put one side against the wall and for the other side by one of the "bed rails" that just slips under the mattress. Pretty soon she will be old enough to climb on and off the bed on her own. OR babyproof her room (bolt furniture to the wall, block outlets and make sure anything plugged in cannot be unplugged.) and get a twin mattress for her floor, get rid of the crib ;-). Then she can't "fall" out of the bed in her room and you can nurse her to sleep.

Also if you cosleep at night, as I do, consider using the crib as a sidecar. Remove the drop side and attach the crib to the side of the bed, you need to make sure the mattresses remain snug together, usually you have to put some padding between the far side of the crib mattress and the bars (I use some old rolled up sheets for mattress sizes I don't have anymore -but I just can't throw out sheets *sigh*)

Also it is developmentally normal for many breastfed babies to still be waking at night to nurse. Mine was up about every 1-3 hours at the age. Less often once I was actually in bed for the night. Of course going in to nurse baby back to sleep every 90 minutes means I didn't get much done in the evenings. Frequent night waking is particularly common in babies who don't nurse well during the day because they are too busy. I have yet to see even one piece of research that suggests ANY health or developmental benefits for a baby or toddler to sleep through the night. I have seen many studies that show it is normal, reduces SIDS risk, and encourages proper brain development. It was around 14 months that my son started going 4-6 hours one stretch at night. Now at 18 months he's good for 7-8 but before that he is up every 1-2 hours (until I go to bed) and after that he is snack, snack, snack.

If the sleep arrangement either the co-sleeping or the frequency of night feedings is bothersome to you many moms have success with this book:

#2 FOOD
--------------
Just stop driving yourself nuts! She doesn't *need* anything except breastmilk. Until age 1 or later solids are for fun, socializing and learning. And right now she is probably having fun and learning how to train mommy but not really learning much about solids.

Offer her food, preferably real foods not baby foods that she can feed herself. And sit there and share them. If she eats she eats, if she doesn't she doesn't. Also this makes you eat healthier. Lots of fruit and veggies, limit salt and sugar. My son ate about 4-5 days per week, and only one meal between ages 10-12 months. After 12 months he started eating a lot more, probably because I got pregnant and morning sickness effected my supply.

Why safe feeding is safe and beneficial for breastfed babies

http://www.askdrsears.com/faq/bf4.asp
This means that infants can go for at least a year on breast milk alone, without eating any foods, and be nutritionally complete. Offering foods between 6 and 12 months of age is simply for social development and to get infants used to eating.

Nourishing a baby (some of this page is useful, some I disagree with, worth a read though)

#3 "Velcro" baby.
-------------------------
Can you put her in a back-style carrier? Either a backpack or a wrap? That can allow you to cook and do the dishes.

Let her "help" fold the laundry. (I let my son throw all the socks and underwear into a basket). She can "help" sweep, dust, etc too.

Spend more time actually interacting in the morning, singing songs, games, flashcards, whatever. Sometimes if you pay upfront they are more likely to let you walk away for a few minutes ;). Also these books have some great really short exercises to break up the day (and by short I mean like 30seconds to 3 minutes). http://www.gentlerevolution.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=G&Category_Code=B4
(BTW these books are available at most bookstores, there is just a bit more info on them here. And of course reviews on amazon so you don't have to just take my word for it)

#4 Independence
-------------------------------
Your almost there, soon your baby will be off walking around, disassembling the humidifier, building block towers and assembling lego. Of course she'll still check in every 10 minutes if she's like my toddler (hehe unless he is in something he shouldn't be).

By meeting her needs now you really, really ARE making her more independent in the long run!

#5 Some other advice:
------------------------------
Get out of the house! Go to the park for an hour every day, join mommy groups. Walk around the mall. The break is good for you and generally toddlers respond well to a little stimulation.

http://www.kathydettwyler.org/detsleepthrough.html
The same is true of sleeping. Human children are designed to be sleeping with their parents. The sense of touch is the most important sense to primates, along with sight. Young primates are carried on their mother's body and sleep with her for years after birth, often until well after weaning. The expected pattern is for mother and child to sleep together, and for child to be able to nurse whenever they want during the night. Normal, healthy, breastfed and co-sleeping children do not sleep "through the night" (say 7-9 hours at a stretch) until they are 3-4 years old, and no longer need night nursing. I repeat -- this is NORMAL and HEALTHY. Dr. James McKenna's research on co-sleeping clearly shows the dangers of solitary sleeping in young infants, who slip into abnormal patterns of very deep sleep from which it is very difficult for them to rouse themselves when they experience an episode of apnea (stop breathing). When co-sleeping, the mother is monitoring the baby's sleep and breathing patterns, even though she herself is asleep. When the baby has an episode of apnea, she rouses the baby by her movements and touch. This is thought to be the primary mechanism by which co-sleeping protects children from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. In other words, many cases of SIDS in solitary sleeping children are thought to be due to them having learned to sleep for long stretches at a time at a very early age, so they find themselves in these deep troughs of sleep, then they may experience an episode of apnea, and no one is there to notice or rouse them from it, so they just never start breathing again. Co-sleeping also allows a mother to monitor the baby's temperature during the night, to be there if they spit up and start to choke, and just to provide the normal, safe environment that the baby/child has been designed to expect.

[...]

Human children are designed (whether you believe by millions of years of evolution, or by God, it doesn't matter) -- to nurse *very* frequently, based on the composition of the milk of the species, the fact that all higher primates (Primates are the zoological Order to which humans belong, higher primates include monkeys and apes) keep their offspring in the mother's arms or on her back for several years, the size of the young child's stomach, the rapidity with which breast milk is digested, the need for an almost constant source of nutrients to grow that huge brain (in humans, especially), and so on. By very frequently, I mean 3-4 times per hour, for a few minutes each time. The way in which some young infants are fed in our culture -- trying to get them to shift to a 3-4 hour schedule, with feedings of 15-20 minutes at a time, goes against our basic physiology. But humans are very adaptable, and some mothers will be able to make sufficient milk with this very infrequent stimulation and draining of the breasts, and some children will be able to adapt to large meals spaced far apart. Unfortunately, some mothers don't make enough milk with this little nursing, and some babies can't adjust, and so are fussy, cry a lot, seem to want to nurse "before it is time" and fail to grow and thrive. Of course, usually the mother's body is blamed -- "You can't make enough milk" -- rather than the culturally-imposed expectation that feeding every 3-4 hours should be sufficient, and the mother begins supplementing with formula, which leads to a steady spiral downward to complete weaning from the breast.

best type of baby carrier or wrap?

Star L

Do you like baby front carriers, backpacks, wraps, mobi wraps or mei tai wraps?

Whats the easiest and most comfy wrap? or do you just carry your baby without one?

Answer
The worst I have tried is the babybjorn. HATE it. I don't think it is designed well for baby or for mom's back. I used it ONCE when my baby was less then 8 lbs & my back hurt within 15 mins. Not good. It was adjusted well, I knew it was as I had a good friend with me letting me borrow it. She had used it a lot. Plus it's pretty basic, not too hard to figure out. We readjusted & readjusted, I just hated it. My favorite overall is the Ergo, hands down. But each type has pros & cons & some are better for certain ages & depending on what you want from your carrier. If you want handsfree nursing with small babies then a stretchy wrap like Moby is the right answer. If you want to be able to wear baby for a wide array of ages & weights & for longer periods of time, then an Ergo is a better suggestion. It is more about what YOU want from a carrier then which carrier is best. Ergos are bulky - so they are hard to just tote along "in case". Ones that tote well are rind slings, peanut shell styles or continuous loop slings, but you need to be careful of those styles with very small babies & make sure they are positioned well. Mei tais' are more of a carrier then a wrap & are awesome if you want something that you can wear for a bit, is a bit more take along "just in case" as it's less bulky then an Ergo & they come in a ton of really gorgeous fabrics.

Like I said I do love my ergo - but the drawbacks are this...they aren't as pretty as many of the other types, they are definitely bulky, so it's not easy to just bring it along in case you might want to use it. i do keep mine in the car a lot, but even tucking it in the basket under the stroller fills the whole basket for me just about. They also are a bit pricey compared to some of the others. The pros are that it really does put the weight onto your hips, not your back. My 5 yr old can still fit in it & he is average size for age AND he is almost half my weight. I can carry him fine. My legs will burn, but my back doesn't feel a thing. You are NOT supposed to put a child that heavy in there, but it was at Disney & the little one was sleeping in the stroller & the big one was VERY tired...so you make due right? Anyway, it is rated to 45 lbs. It is also easy for me to put on my tiny petite frame (as in 100lbs) & in no time I can take it off, hand it to Dh & he can adjust it to fit his nearly 6 ft frame in just a minute. He had no trouble using it from day one. By that I mean he wasn't bothered by it because it wasn't girly AND he had no trouble getting it adjusted without instruction or confusion & my 1st son was worn by daddy a LOT. We have had ours nearly 5 yrs. We have used it & I have loaned twice to relatives. It has been laundered a LOT & it still looks basically new, despite being under almost constant use. My 1st child was in it EVERY day literally. It is how I got things done. He liked to be held, I needed to move. The only thing an Ergo won't do is allow a child to be in front forward facing. There is some controversy about having a baby set that way in a structured carrier anyway though, as many warn it could put pressure on the spine & hips to have them set on their crotch. I the ergo they set on their butt & their legs kind of wrap around you versus hang.

he funny thing I ONLY had an ergo with my 1st child & he loved it & so did I. baby #2 comes along & I thought a Moby would be nice for newborn stage - he hated it. So I got a slingling (continuous loop) and a friend let me borrow her babybjorn, then I got a Mei Tai (Baby Hawk) & Maya Wrap (ring sling), (I think this is when I needed rehab - but anyway), then I got one of the hip hold type (can't remember the name brand) and I got fed up! My child didn't love any of them & neither did I. When I first put him in the Ergo & he didn't really like it the way my 1st had - it never occurred to me that he might not like CARRIERS. Well that was it. He tolerated the Ergo better than any of the other ones I bought & we went back to that - plus that one felt good to my back & was easy to put on alone & take off. So I liked them all for different reasons (other than the bjorn) - but my baby hated them for some mysterious reason I cannot quantify. I have sold most of them or given them away & the only one I won't is my ergo. Until my ovaries shrivel & fall out, I will hold onto it "in case" because when it works, it works so well. My 2nd finally decided to like carriers when he was around 10 months old & at 26 months is now a pro in the ergo. When he wants in he calls it giddyup. :)

Baby Carrier for hiking??

Aghbaybay

Hello- I'm looking to start going on some hikes with my 6 month old daughter.

I've heard of using the soft backpack style ones like ERGO or BECO...but are the bigger ones like that look like a huge backpack and have metal on them and everything more comfortable??

Which kind is better? OR what other one do you recommend?

I have a pouch sling- but I don't think that would work that well.

Answer
I have a backpack carrier, it is one of the big ones with a metal frame, but it weighs almost nothing and is great for hiking. It is a Kelty brand and was one of my best purchases. I have a Bijorn and several slings, but for extended hiking I cannot carry in one of those.

Also, Maya is 3 and we can still carry her in the pack comfortably, which is nice. So, yes, they are MUCH more comfortable and I could even kind of forget she was up there.

Also, you can adjust the band that goes around your waist, so if you are feeling pressure in one part of your shoulders or back you pull a strap, and you can carry the weight totally differently.

If you do a lot of hiking then one of these is a must. Check Craigslist or local second hand stores as well. You can got one for $50 instead of $200. Babies r Us has them on display as well. You can put your daughter in it and try it on.

Any suggestions for a backpack baby carrier?

jveryrad

I have a very active 15month old daughter. She likes to grab objects and destroy them. She is difficult to bring to a store. Yesterday, I had to hold her while shopping in hardware stores because she insisted on opening packages or bottles if I let her down. The shopping carts can be very dirty in a hardware store.

Does anyone use a backpack baby carrier for their toddlers for shopping? I don't do much hiking, and I use a stroller to take her on walks. So I would just use it to take her where I don't want her to run around.

Is it safe to get into? Is there a risk of dropping her while putting the backpack on? Any other uses for this? Any suggestions for brands? I heard Tough Traveler is good. Thanks.

Answer
I love my backpack for shopping, and I can still carry my soon to be 3 year old. This is the one I have http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441776409&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302735239&bmUID=1160421939450 . We bought it almost 5 years ago when our oldest was the right size for it. It still looks brand new. I used it for shopping and long walks, my husband uses it for hiking. Have fun!

Traveling with a 4 month old baby girl..?

Q. okay so i have a question mom's.. i would like to buy my daugheter a small suit case.. just for her..

we are going on vacation for 4 days.. Which stores would i be able to find one? my nephew had one with disney characters but it seems like i can't find a single one..

and another question how much clothes would you pack??

Answer
Target has backpacks with characters, but not really suitcases. YOu might have to try Amazon. Or as your nephew's mom where she got it!

Baby clothes are small - take more rather than less. I think I brought 2 outfits per day for my dd at that age, plus some layering clothes - ie long sleeves and/or a sweatshirt, pants - even with warm days it can be cool at night. Also bring an extra sleep outfit. Even if you have access to laundry you don't want to be bothering your host about it too often.

is the winter weather too cold to take my 4 month old for a walk?

want_2_sho

I was wondering if it is too cold to go for a walk outside with my 4 month old son. I have gained a lot of weight due to my birthcontrol this winter and I was thinking about going for a walk everyday, nice weather depending, to help with losing some weight. I have a baby carrier thats like a backpack where you carry the baby in front of you (Snugli) and if i put a heavy outfit on him underneath his snowsuit if that would be warm enough for him to go for a walk with me. I live in South Glens Falls, NY and the temperature ranges from the 20's to the 40's on a nce day. His snowsuit is made of thick "soft" material and has a hood. he also wears a warm winter hat. i would also dress him very warmly underneath. Im a stay at home mom so i have him by myself all of the time and it would also benefit him as well as myself. Do you think that this is a good idea? Any other suggestions would also be appreciated!! Thanks!

Answer
At first I didn't want to take my 4 month old out in this chilly weather, but it gets quite boring being cooped up inside all the time. I bundle her up nice and warm with a warm hat and she is fine. The fresh air is good for her and she really likes the sounds and sights around town.

As long as he's warm, there should be no harm!

3 seater pram??

britjam

Im pregnant with baby number 3 and need a 3 seater pram as my daughter will be 3 and a half and my son 25 months when the new baby arrives. Just after some advice and whats good out there for a decent not to heavy 3 seater!!
Thanks

Answer
I have seen three seater prams before but they wouldn't be suitable for a newborn and 2 older toddlers. I would be going for a double stroller for the older kids if they still fit with their combined weight and put the baby in a carrier/harness/pouch on you. Or put the younger two in a double stroller/pram and get a walking harness/backpack for the oldest one to walk beside you without running off.

Phil and Teds prams make great double prams for babies and toddlers.
Or I found these.....

School Drama...AHH HELP!!? I'm completely lost..I'm stressed..?

Q. So if you answered my last question about this,You would know that i'm going to a new school..And it sucks! I ask,That you PLEASE read this whole thing..I bet it will be long. But i need MAJOR help..And if no one answers,And it expires,I'll ask it again. I'm really stuck here...Thank you for reading this.
So,My birthday is next month,On the 26th. And i'm not all that pumped for it..I'm stressed out really badly. First off,I have BAD acne,I have acne on both my cheeks,my nose, the sides of my face,my forehead,my chest,my arms, and my back. My mom told me,It's puberty,...BIG TIME! I can't help it that i'm not the most prettiest thing in the world. I know no one is perfect,But when i'm around people,It feels like a big Competition. Now,My hair..I take showers every day,And my hair is ruined,It's not shiny,And i have what my mom calls:"Curly Q's",On top of my head. After i get out of the shower,They're noticeable. My hair is curly after i get out of the shower,Which sucks just as much. I don't have a backpack,or any school supplies..So,I would like to ask the girl's,THE PRETTY GIRLS,Who have got it goin ooooon,{Lol,Kidding..Every girl can answer..I'm just targeting that mostly to girls who buy creams and are good with hair, and stuff.} My 'grandma' is taking me school shopping some day,And i need to know..Is there any REALLY good, long lasting hair and skin products i can use,THAT work? I only had 2 friends in my last school,My boyfriend...{Who broke up with me every week..Damnit!!!} And one of my other friends. We're all apart from each other,But oh well..I'll never forget them! And in this new school,You can't sit by yourself,You have to sit with other kids,In your class..And i'm quiet, shy, nervous, and i'm also a Misanthrope. Google it..
I hate people,I hate kids,I can't trust anyone well...And i don't know what to do..I'm going to try and not care what people think of me,But i need help..HELP ME?! I've looked on Yahoo Answers,And NOTHING helped me...Please people..This is to all the adults, parents, grandparents, and teens in high school as well. People attack me,Because of my BAD BAD BAD BAD BAD acne..And it's hurtful. I don't tell anyone,Because then..A big fued will start, and I'LL get in trouble. I've never had any luck in school...NO luck whatsoever.. This new school is full of girly preppy girls,Mean boys,And it's full of Gossip and Drama..I am so lost here,I feel like killing myself over this..Because school is SO completely hard for me to overcome. I don't like the teachers,i don't like the food,i don't like the kids, and i don't like the work..I really need ya'lls help..There's the principal there,I know him..He worked at my old school,Turns out..HE OWNS BOTH THE SCHOOLS! And,He doesn't like me...I missed over 31 days in my last school,Due to sickness. I got my tonsils out now,And i used to be late all the time..If i be late again,HE'LL USE IT ALL AGAINST ME AND TAKE ME AND MY MOM BACK TO COURT! I don't wake up in the mornings,But i might buy an alarm clock..I NEED HELP GUYS!?
I am completely lost here..
I can't get into homeschool,My damn 'parents' won't let me..

Answer
Girl calm yourself,i too was in your position, now you might be dissapointed for what im about to tell you, acne take's a long time to get rid of those commercial's you see for proactive and stuff like that are a bunch of bull, now, this hormone thing,is a load of crap,it's what your eating,i was addicted to fast food

it made me break out it made me sick, and my hair was a mess
if you eat fast food cut it all off,you have to,start eating
alot of fruit's and vegtable's,so when your shopping, ask your ma to take you to the "grocerie store" pick out ton's of fruit's,

this will make your face slim down, and your acne will start to dissapear do this all the time, apple's and pear's will make your hair strong, and next time you find some rose's take a few with you and squeeze them over water,it will turn a brownish color and take a tissue and let it sit on your face for awhile about 30 min's it put's vitamin's in your skin!

i know i wish i could change the way i looked in one day,
like i wish i had a fairy godmother like cinderella lol,

but to make it happen MAKE IT HAPPEN,
buy a straitener, straiten your curly q's i too have them,
make sure your hair is dry before you do this ,buy baby oil,
johnson's or whatsoever, and tab a little on your hair and straiten it you will see it's about to become very strait and boom thier gone blend it with your strait hair,it DOES work,

(don't burn yourself) and wear stuff that make's you comfy,
look up to your idol, and focus on your school work
please do not fall behind because some popular preppy girl is intimidatiing you and screw boy's please have good grade's!
that matter's the most,

and live life, remember this line and tell yourself

"one thing i can tell you is you got to be free"

it get's me through the day!
