On October 19 my mother shipped me two boxes from Wisconsin to Germany. I received one box only five days later. (That's very fast as most of the time it takes about seven business days) The second box is still not here. When I track my package, this is what I see:

This box went to a different international sorting facility than the other, even though they were shipped from the same post office at the same time. Why? And why has it arrived and been processed through the same exact sorting facility on two consecutive days?

The *missing* box has a high value amount ($225) but its all in small, completely legal items. Baby clothes, candy, a backpack and a cooler) It's in a large box, not easy to lose. I do expect it to be held by German customs once it arrives and I will have to pay taxes on it but what's taking so long for it to even leave the US? Over the years my mom has shipped me several boxes and I've never experienced a problem like this before.

What's happening with my package? My baby needs those clothes I ordered!

Answer
You do know that, that area of the country was hit hard by a hurricane. Many places are still closed down or on a limited schedule. Even if they are up and running, which this is, things are backed up a bit. Just hang in there. Many people that work there had their homes destroyed or some are still without utilities.

how can i convince my mom to let me get a dog?

Nathan R

im 16 and have always wanted a german shepherd or a siberian husky. Unfortunately, my mom always ask my brother and sister about a pet and not me :(...we have 2 little dogs, but they arent trained right and cant even come inside...itll be a total pain but id be grateful if someone could help me with getting one. thanks!
btw i dont OWN the 2 dogs my SISTER does plus i was living with my dad for the time being that my sister and brother got those 2 dogs...i spend a ton of time with them and they are getting a littler better as the months go on so if the guy below me can help please do

Answer
Well, kiddo, I suggest you read every scrap of information on both of these breeds that there is. This means lots of internet research, lots of trips to the library to check out breed books and books on training, and conversations with a reputable breeder.

When you do that research, you'll find out that both of those dogs are not suited to your home. Both breeds have a high prey drive, and some dogs will chase/kill small animals (dogs) even if they're raised with them. These breeds both require lots of activity and exercise, least of which is an hour walk per day: rain or shine. In addition to that walk, you will need to provide your dog with a job, like weight pull, scent tracking or backpacking in order to satisfy his need to work. Do you really have time for this right now? You're 16, so if you're not already working, you probably will be soon. And your social life will surely suffer when you tell your friends, "Sorry, but I have to spend 2 hours a day working my dog, so I can't go out tonight."

Lastly, you will need to formulate a life plan for the next 15 years that includes this dog. You're 16 now, so who will take care of the dog when you go to college? You can't take him with you, and your parents didn't want it in the first place. What about after college, will you be willing to pay the extra deposit and pricier rent per month to live in a community that allows large dogs? It can get VERY expensive. What about when you get married? What will you do if your new wife doesn't like dogs, or is allergic? What about when children come along? Will you STILL have 2 hours a day to work your dog when that new baby arrives?

Do yourself, and your future dog, a favor and wait until you are an established homeowner with a stable life before you get such a time intensive dog. You already have two "little dogs" that could be made into great pets if you took the time to educate yourself on training.

Do I have to use an approved car/booster seat on Alaska Airlines?

lachburke

I am booked on a flight on Alaska Airlines next year with my 1.5 year old. He is flying on a full fare adult ticket not a discounted infant fare (usually 1/2 price). Both our tickets are points tickets (Perth through to Vancouver on Qantas then Alaska AL). Qantas does not require a booster seat for children in their own seat, even if they are under 2 (ie. infants) so I was not planning on bringing a car seat as I am travelling alone and will have enough to carry as it is. I read on the Alaska AL website that "children travelling on 50% infant ticket seats must use a booster/car seat approved for car and air travel". I'm wondering, given that my son will be travelling on a full fare adult ticket whether he needs the booster seat? What will they do if I don't have one, not let us on the flight? Or, shall I just lie and say he's 2 - or just board the flight with him in his own seat w/out booster and they will assume is is two and not longer an infant and therefore no booster required.

Answer
My 6-year-old has now flown on 242 flights and my 2-year-old on 40 flights. Mostly on Alaska Airlines so I have a bit of experience with this.

As a lap baby (unpaid), you definitely don't need a car seat. Some airlines like Northwest are real pricks about not allowing you to use one even on a flight with lots of empty seats. Whereas Alaska is one of the most baby-friendly airlines we've used and will let you use an empty seat for a car seat even though you paid nothing. I'll reserve a window-aisle combo (leaving an empty middle seat) towards the back of the plane to increase the chance of getting a free empty seat. IF someone does buy the seat between, they ALWAYS want to get out from between mother-child or mother-father passing a baby back and forth.

Without a carseat, you will need to have them in your lap for take-off and landing. They might want you to pick them up during possible turbulance as well. What you propose is no different than the unpaid lap baby who has an empty seat next to them. I can't imagine the flight attendents caring except during take-off and landing and then, (despite the physics involved), Mom's arms suffice. (or a car seat)

But I would reconsider your plan. Again, I've done this A LOT, and we try hard to BRING the car seat, not leave it or check it. Of course the car seat is safest in a crash, but Quantas has never had a crash and Alaska only loses planes about once every 20 years. More importantly, a child can sleep in a car seat much easier because it is sloped and their head is suported on both sides. And your arms will get TIRED of holding him for 18 hours of flight time. And if he gets into a total screaming, kicking fit about being overtired, jet-lagged, etc, you can strap him and pop in a pacificer. For some kids, being secured down helps at times. Sure, it is one more thing to schlepp through the airport, but you could always use a rental cart for $3 or call for one of those electric carts the old folks use. At 1.5 years old, I'd bring a Baby Bjorn front carrier so you can have him on your chest and leave your two hands free. One for the car seat and one to present tickets, passports, etc.

For your carry-on, use a backpack/rucksack. Baby in front, backpack behind, car seat on one arm, one hand free. I've gone through many airports and countries that way. So has my wife. Yeah, it is easier with two adults, but doable as one.

Try hard to save nursing or a bottle for climb-out and, less so, descent. The swallowing helps clear his ear pressure.

Theoretically, they can ask to see a US FAA approval sticker for airplane use on the carseat (they all have it), but any nation's approval ought to fly. And Alaska doesn't check all that often.

You'll need a car seat to drive with him in Alaska until he is 4 years or 40 pounds. And while airplanes rarely hit moose, cars and taxis do.

Does someone know how to lose weight pretty fast?

Hello Kitt

so the thing is that i have this talent show in march and i wanna lose weight so i'll be pretty up there, besides, i've always want to lose that weight, because i still have baby fat!!! and then there's the fact that my mom is on top of me, i told her this is the time for me to be chubby but she wants me to be skinny, but back to the question, how can i lose weight pretty fast, anyone?

Answer
Do you have a park nearby with play equipment? Use that, hang off the monkey bars & do pull ups. That will help the upper body. If thats not an option, do weighted pushups. put a loaded backpack on & do as many pushups as you can both wide & narrow.
Do crunches, sit ups whatever & for your legs do squats & lunges.
Do this every second day, go for a run or bike ride every other day. And sensible dirt if you want to actually loose the fat.

Strollers are making me go insane?

FunkyMonke

So i have a high risk pregnancy and an overly cautious and slightly superstious husband, so i am 23 weeks and i have bought NOTHING... this however has been replaced by EXCESSIVE amounts of research on baby stuff, every freaking baby object you can imagine i have went nuts on reading reviews of, especially strollers. I have read so many blogs, seen so many pictures, i am literally obssessed with this stroller thing, i even read the reviews of European websites and i use a translator sometimes! I thought I had it figured out and settled on the Quinny Buzz + bassinet + Maxi-Cosi-Mico car seat, but then i realized the maxi cosi only lasts to 20 pounds and my friends baby is 22 pounds at 4 months! THen i saw the PEG PEREGO SKATE, and now i think i want that stroller instead. I was obssessed with the Stokke Explorey before i saw the Quinny in the store. I never liked the bugaboo b/c of it folds in two pieces. SO now i am just becoming super confused!!!!!!! What should i do? what stroller do i get? I am getting it later but i want to decide on it now? Please do not tell me i am insane for spending a lot of money on a stroller, i know it is excessive but when i went to Babies R US to look at the basic things like Graco and Evenflo I almost cried. They do not compare, and i do not want to buy another stroller in a year because those fell apart. I live in the city, the stroller has to be sturdy, i do not go on public transport pretty much ever , I do not use a car often, only with my husband (its a stick, i dont know how to drive it) ..... i want a stroller that is forward and rare facing and i want something that will last until child 1 is 4 and then through any other children i will have.
umm the stuff at babies r us sucked. They do not have the same stuff as they do online. They do not have stokke in stores or even bugaboo, atleast not the store i went to
Unfortuanatley i am in the US. The stroller options availabe in Europe just do not compare to anything we have here. The best strollers here are imported from EU, and only few are imported. You guys have the Joolz Bloom out recently, i can not even look at it as no store has it.

Answer
Wow!! You sound like me! I read some of your post to my husband, and he was cracking up because it sounds so similar. I have a huge spreadsheet comparing widths, weights, folds, etc. for a couple dozen different strollers but have pretty much narrowed it down to just a few. We just drove over two hours (each way) yesterday to go stroller shopping for the first time. At the first store, we saw the Orbit Baby, Stokke Xplory, and Quinny Buzz (as well as a less expensive model we didn't like at all called the EasyWalker Sky.) Even though my husband initially ruled out any 3-wheel styles, he loved the Quinny. (It actually has two little wheels instead of 1 in the front center position.) I definitely liked it best of those three. Unfortunately, we didn't get to see the bassinet, which is something we'd definitely get. Then at the second store, we were able to see the Peg Perego Skate and the Bugaboo Cameleon. Well, my husband never, ever thought he'd want to spend $900 for a stroller (when I started my research, he thought even $500 was nutty), but it was seriously love at first sight. He really didn't even want to bother with the Cameleon after seeing the Skate. (In his words, it's like the Ferrari of strollers...the whole "Italian thing".) Like you, I had also ruled out the Bugaboo because of the 2-fold thing, but it's my mom's favorite (because of all the "pretty colors"), so I was trying to be open-minded. The only reservation I had had about the Skate (other than the high price, of course), prior to seeing it, was the weight: 33.7 lbs! But it didn't bother us at all. Like you, this is our first child so maybe we don't really "know" how much of a pain it's going to be to lift it in and out of the car every day. But we're both healthy, strong, fairly athletic people, so we decided it doesn't matter to us. I'd say that the bugaboo maneuvers every-so-slightly better than the Skate but not so much so that we'd consider it over the Skate. Now, the only other "serious contender" is one we haven't been able to see in person: the Uppababy Vista. It's a LOT cheaper and doesn't seem to have any major flaws (other than the 27" width when the regular all-terrain wheels are on it.) My parents (who live elsewhere in the country) have seen both the Skate and the Uppababy. Dad loved the uppababy but forgot why by the time he saw the Skate. (Clearly, he isn't taking this whole "stroller research" thing as seriously as he should!!) They saw the Skate and Cameleon side-by-side. Unfortunately, the salesman who demonstrated them was CLEARLY biased against the Skate and loved the Cameleon. I won't get into everything he said here, since this is already probably too long of a response, but suffice to say that I don't think it was a "fair comparison". So mom left the store still thinking the Bugaboo was still superior. That was disappointing for us, since we were hoping she'd share our "Skate excitement". Anyway, the only stroller other than the Uppababy I haven't seen and still haven't eliminated (based on negative reviews, specs, etc.) is the Bumbleride Queen B. But at this point, I'd say it's likely between the Uppababy and the Skate for us. Perhaps if we saw the Quinny bassinet and loved it, we *might* be tempted to put it back on our short list. But really, that convertible bassinet-seat feature is awesome. The guy who showed my parents the Skate emphasized that the Bugaboo bassinet is far superior in terms of baby's comfort, but to us (again, "first time parents", so take my comments with a grain of salt), the Skate bassinet looked plenty comfy! So I don't know if I've helped at all. Like you, I just want to DECIDE, even if we don't buy right away, so I can move on to the next decision (carriers/backpacks, perhaps...) And it sounds like we are basing our decision on very similar criteria. Have you seen the Skate in person? I think there's a very good chance that's what we'll end up with. The only remaining concern we have about the Skate is that it's the first model year, and there are bound to be minor glitches as a result, at least in some of the strollers they sent out. So that's a risk. My husband is going to call Peg Perego USA customer service on monday, partly to get answers to a couple little questions but also partly to find out how easy they are to deal with, in the event that we do get the Skate and have problems with it. I know Peg Perego is a solid brand that's been around forever. (My mom had Peg Peregos for my siblings and me!) But we're certainly not taking the decision to buy a $900 stroller lightly. (not to mention the $250 infant seat that goes with it and possibly the $100 matching storage bag...) Best of luck in your search! Hopefully, you'll just see one and just know that it's "the one" for you!!

Can a breastfeed baby of three months, be given the bottle only for four days, then go back to breastfeeding?

Michael

My baby is now a month old. She is currently both breastfed by her mother and given a bottle (which contains pumped milk, not formula). We want to go on a vacation when the baby will be 3 months old, where the baby will be left with her grandmother. If our daughter is given a bottle for those 4 days, when we get back, will she be able to go back to breastfeeding? Any personal experience or insight would be great.

Answer
I think that it is very unwise to leave a 3 month old baby, even if not breastfeeding. There is no way to explain to the baby where mother is and when she will be back. And there is no guarantee that she will go back to the breast when the mother returns. Plus, mother will have to pump regularly day and night in order to preserve her milk supply and be comfortable while away (at least every 3 hours) with a large, double electric pump. Babies whose mothers disappear, even temporarily, have been known to grieve for them.

Have you considered taking the baby with you? Babies are easy to travel with at this age, especially when breastfeeding. All you really need is a baby carrier and a backpack for diapers and some extra clothing. My babies always slept well at the beach under an umbrella and towel.

Even if the mother is currently considering such a trip away from the baby, she might well have second thoughts in 2 months and be reluctant to go away. Is she enthusiastic about this idea?

In answer to your question about the baby going back to exclusive breastfeeding: maybe the baby will start breastfeeding again. But it might take several days and a lot of effort on the mother's part when she returns, and the baby will have to go back to exclusive breastfeeding, at least temporarily (no bottles at all).

Would the Lesportsac Voyager Backpack be suitable for highschool?

Tiffany

I really love the style of the backpack and I've been told that it's roomy enough for books and binders but I want to know if it will last and if it's worth the price. I really need help with this before school starts In August. Thanks.

Answer
I think that backpack is fine for travel or even as a baby bag, but to use everyday and hauling textbooks and notebooks, I don't think it will last. The material is not that durable to withstand sharp corners of hardbound books and notebooks over time. I would stick to a backpack made with either a heavy weight canvas or denier cordura fabric.

Any opinions about baby backpacks and stroller systems?

I don't have a baby yet but I might in the future. My question is about baby backpacks and strollers. Snuggli is one backpack I have seen. How useful are they? I saw one that said it could be used in the front for a small baby and on the back for a larger one up to 27 pounds. Are they comfortable and easy to get on and off? My concern was would my back start hurting after awhile? I have also seen some that have a metal frame that goes on the back? It looks kind of like the old hiking backpacks. Has anyone used that type? Is the soft Snuggli type better than the metal frame type?
On to strollers. I see alot of the stroller systems that come with the carseat carriers. Does anyone have an opinion whether they think the type that holds a carseat is better than just a regular stroller? I can see the benefits of both types. I would be a busy mom who be going on lots of walks and would also need to have one that would fold up nicely for the trunk of the car.Any other must haves for a baby?

Answer
Baby backpacks: I liked them okay. My husband loved ours. He would carry our daughter around all the time. They get in the way if you're trying to do something (and you really can't bend over) but they're nice for walking around and shopping if you don't want a stroller.
Stroller: Get one with a car seat carrier. They are so nice. You have to have a car seat anyway so why not get one that can snap onto your stroller. Its good for an infant because you know their head is protected in the carseat and you can see them at all times because you put the carseat on facing you in the stroller. Also, when your child is too big for the car seat, you can just use the stroller as a regular stroller. We have a 17 month old and have both kinds. Both fit into our trunk nicely. Our Jeep stroller (which is for older kids kind of a more expensive umbrella stroller) is great for going to the store. Her other stroller is nice if he needs a nap because she can lay down in it. Other things to have are a bouncy seat, a swing (our daughter absolutely loved hers), and for hen s/he can walk a stationary set so s/he can stand and play at the same time. We also liked our jumparoo but some people say they're bad for kids' legs. There are many good things for a baby, but it's all about what's good for you and your baby.

Things to do with a 14 month old baby in Hawaii?

Sandy C

We're traveling to Hawaii in April with our baby girl who will be 14 months. We're going to all the islands and I don't know what activities we'll really be able to do while there. We live in Miami so the beach isn't the main attraction for us. I purchased a baby carrier/backpack and an all terrain stroller to get around. Is there any hiking to do with a tough stroller? Carrying the baby for a month on our backs will not be easy. Any suggestions?

Answer
There are some easy hikes on Oahu that might be doable with a heavy duty stroller, boomer gal has one idea. Thereis also Koko Head (by Hawaii Kai) and Makiki Valley (which is wide enough as it is used every day heavily). Also Diamond Head is doable (not the rougher areas). There is a Children's Discovery Center nearer to downtown that would be fun and it features Hawaiana. There is also the Bishop Museum which might be interesting for a child.

Why do African Americans where those childish backpacks with Spiderman, Dora the explorer, etc?

Lucifer

There are lots of them at my school, I was wondering why they wear such baby backpacks?

Answer
I've never seen any black people where I live doing that. Maybe just a silly trend in your town. I remember back in the 90's they hung pacifiers around their necks and I thought it was ridiculous. But I think every race and person makes a bad fashion choice at one point or the next. You grow up and you change.

Maybe you should go up to one of them and ask. Let me know -lol

Here's a thought, I know when I was in school, some kids thought it was too dorky to carry their backpacks or folders around, so they'd bring those flimsy pee-chee folders and roll them up. Maybe they think that by wearing childish backpacks it's kind of the same thing. Like if you have to carry a bunch of books around, might as well make a joke out of it. Like "I don't need to wear a big backpack because I'm not a nerd, so instead I'll wear this kid's backpack because I don't take school serious"

Vitamin E and aloe vera are infused into high quality, cold pressed vegetable oils that are non-greasy and absorb quickly to create a silky smooth lotion that leaves the skin with a long-lasting satiny finish - an excellent bed or naptime massage lotion. Keep skin healthy and make this part of an after shower or bath routine. The custom pump locks in the up position making this lotion perfectly portable in a diaper bag, gym bag, or backpack without worrying about a mess.

I have most of the California Baby products for my 5 month old and my 3 year old. They both get eczema and have fair skin. NONE of the CB products irritate them and they work we well, if not better than the mass market brands. Both kids are prone to red rashes on their cheeks, and since I started using the Sensitive Everyday Lotion, their faces are much more clear. Plus the lotion keeps them moisturized far longer than the regular brands. The fragrances in the other products (not the fragrance-free obviously) are mild and pleasant. I highly recommend all of the CB products - especially if you are looking for natural and SAFE baby products.

Diaper Bag Essentials?

Mommy t

I have a question about a diaper bag/backpack my husband and I bought. It's by Baby Innovations and he REALLY likes it a lot....I on the other hand am not so fond of it as I am trying to pack it up with daily essentials. It just seems cramped once everything gets in there and it seems like I'd have to unpack and repack just to get some things out.

What are essentials of a diaper bag in the first year of the babies life and what other functions should it preform? Maybe I can make this one work, but I don't think so. I feel bad because he really likes it.

I am thinking of just returning this and buying a regular backpack.......This does has some functions I love to it....like a pacifier holder on the outside, and it came with a changing pad, and it has an insualted spot fot bottles.
We are breastfeeding mostly with bottle feedings of breast milk when I am not around or someone else would like a chance to feed.

I assume a sling or a shawl is not small and takes up space....
I am also a nanny and will have him with me all day at someone else's house come fall.
I was thinking of buying a regular backpack we both like....wouldn't it serve the same purpose?

Answer
To be honest ANY diaper bag you get is going to be cramped, atleast with me. It seems the bigger the diaper bag I get the MORE I want to put in there LOL.. =) I'm always just trying to Cram just a little more..hehe
But, if you arent that fond of it as far as looks then I think its ok that you get a new one..OR just get a new one for your outtings, and let your husband use that one.
This is what I pack..
4 Bottles w/water in them
Can of formula
3-4 Blankets (some heavier some lighter)
1-2 Outfits depending on where we are going and how long we will be.
Baby Sunscreen/Sunglasses
Infant Tylenol (we bought 1 ecspecially for our bag, Teething pain can get BAD!)
LOTS of toys
Diapers
Wipes
Burp Cloth...For drool, spit up, or milk on my babys face
& His sippy w/juice in it.
Plus a bowl, spoon, & a pack of baby food just in case we arent home for our 6 o'clock feeding..
Of course you wont need to worry about that till later.. =)

I do pack a lot but, I HATE going out and realizing I wish I had brung this..It never fails when I do leave it at home I wish I would have brung it. So, Do what you think is going to work best for you. You can always try this one out when your baby gets here and if you dont like it then get a new one =)

I have 3...
A small one for VERY short trips..like drs office.
A larger one for LOONG trips and one that is just a little smaller then my big one that I got because it fit so well under my stroller when the bigger one didn't.
We just had to figure out what worked best for us, so once your baby is born you'll figure it out!! =)
CONGRATS!!

What are common trends for college students?

I am going to college this fall and I want to start saving up some money to buy a few things I'm going to be needing for my college wardrobe.

I'm going to buy more yoga pants because I know lots of people wear yoga pants in college.
I'm going to buy another pair of Nike Tempo shorts.
I want a North Face jacket and backpack.
I want a pair of Uggs.
I want a pair of Riding boots.
I want to buy many cute dresses and cute fashion tops.
And maybe I should invest in a pair of good school appropriate length shorts.

What else are some popular trends that college students would wear? Thanks!

Answer
Don't buy yoga pants THEY MAKE U LOOK ALL SHITY AND STUFF but if you want to look cute then I suggest forever21 and you should check out freshtops.com they have cute shirts , you should check out macbarbie07,stilababe09,and beauty baby 44,on YouTube .they have cute taste , spikesandseams.com have the cutest high waisted shorts they are appropriate for school they aren't to long or to short, they are kinda short but not booty short it really just depends on how you see them. Also try PAC sun for a girly boho type of look ,American appeal and Charlotte Russe have cute dresses I don't know about you but I don't like paying 50 bucks for a shirt that says holister in the middle but their jeans are really good material. Most people like labels but u should be different

am taking my 14 week old to ibiza is is better to buy the baby milk and nappys there to avoid heavy baggage?

delboy9448

can i purchase baby milk and nappys in the local shops?

Answer
Better to take milk and nappies with you. I can remember wasting a lot of time looking for somewhere to buy nappies. Nappies don't weigh much, and you can easily cut down on other stuff to make sure you have room for these two essential things. Make space for them. It will be worth it. Cut down on clothes instead. You can always wash some while you are there. Take a tube of travel wash with you. It's concentrated detergent. You only need a tiny bit to wash a sinkful of clothes. You can get travelwash designed to wash baby clothes too - it's kind to their skin. But if you can't find it, then a little baby shampoo works just as well for all but the most stubborn of stains.

We have had holidays backpacking with our children - one with our first child at the age of 4 months and some more as they grew older. Each time we travelled with the bare minimum of luggage, but travel wash and my boobs (in your case formula) are two things we always took. For holidays like that we started out with just enough nappies to get started and bought more as we went along, but that was a necessity because we were always moving around. It wasn't always easy to find nappies.

But during a package holiday, when we could have taken enough for the whole holiday, we ran out, and, as I said in the first line, spent a lot of time looking before we found any. That was in Majorca. It's best to take enough to last the whole time and then it's not a problem. Have a good holiday.

My dad is going to USA and I really want some stuff from there since I love it and all the things you can buy in the States but not here in my country. What's the best stuff? Like, food, candy and things...Thanks! :)

Answer
It depends but I see that people from China will buy dozens of vitamins supplements, electronic stuff from GPS navigation system to cell phones, hardware and software etc But in general, people outside USA, will buy chocolate, cookies, preserves like jams, baby stuff from strollers to baby clothes, baby playstuff, children toys (not made in china though) tennis shoes, jeans, designers t-shirts,backpacks for teenagers, designers handbags, cosmetics from lotion to wrinkle/aging products for wife and briefs, boxer shorts, odor free socks, etc for husbands. One or two older relatives may want doritos, sun chips , mixed nuts etc. I know because whenever I go back, these are some of the stuff in my shopping list.

My son always wants to be picked up?

ninalatti

My son is 7 months old he will cry all day just looking at me i have tried playing with him on the floor but he wont stop! At first i thought something might be wrong but as soon as i picked him up he would stop and smile. I tried letting him cry it out but he just dosent see to want to give up he will keep at it for hours! I have tried a play pen with toys around, even putting him in the high chair so he can see me while im doing work around the house. When he is with my husband he dosnt cry at all! As soon as i walk through the door he starts untill i hold him. He gets attention from me and i never leave his sight but i cant hold him the entire day. Please help!! What should i do i have a three year old little girl i cant hold my son ALL DAY LONG. When will he grow out of this? What can i do to help him?

Answer
When doing laundry, sit in the floor with him or fold it on the bed. Let him "help" you with it. He can play in the laundry basket or in the pile of clothes.

While working in the kitchen, have one cabinet full of stuff he's allowed to pull out and play with. Or put him in a high chair with a snack he can self-feed or a plastic bowl and spoon he can play with.

Do the floors while Dad gives him a bath at night.

Get a sling and wear him while you work or a "baby backpack" kind of carrier.

Hi all...I am in my third trimester. I am going to register baby items at Babies r us this weekend. This is my first baby and I am not sure which items and brands should I pick is safe and comfortble for my baby and pricewise reasonable too. Please give me the review about the baby items and items I do need must. Thank you all.
Thank you all ....for sparing your precious time and giving me lots of information in detail. I am new in this country and first time mom. So, not much idea how to choose the right baby items. But your patience and support helped me alot to select the right things for my baby too instead of wasting money. I am going to print out all those information and check out those items in the store. Once again thank you.

Answer
I highly suggest taking a (relatively) new mom with you to register. My sister (who had a 2 year old at the time) went with me to register and she was a HUGE Help.

Here are a few suggestions.

There has been a lot of press recently about car seats so I'm sure you can google which ones are safest. The one that sticks in my head (b/c it's the one we have) is Graco Snug and ride. I would recomend getting a Snap and Go base so that you can turn the carseat into a stoller.

The crib is totally a matter of taste. We chose the Da Vinci Roxanne because I liked that it could transition into a toddler bed and I liked that it had a drawer under it.

If you get a changing table, make sure it has safety straps (so that baby can't roll off it). We choose the Da Vinci Roxanne changing table dresser combo.

Actually.... I still have my list that has prices and brands that I wanted. I can paste it here -- sorry.... it's going to be long.

Furniture
â Crib â (Da Vinci Roxanne with drawer and conversion kit) $260
â Mattress for Crib â
â Fitted sheets for crib (jersey knit) â 2-3 $10 each

â Glider chair (Storkcraft sleigh glider â Cherry wood/beige cushion) $199
â Ottoman for glider (storkcraft) $70
â Hanging bookshelf (idea to hand shelf 12â to 18â below the ceiling around room to add lots of display and storage space)

Room Accessories
â Crib mobile (electric â the wind up ones stop to fast) Be careful what you pick out b/c all mobiles will not work with Da Vinci crib $40-$50
â Video Monitor (Summer infant Products: Day and Night Video handheld monitor) $170
â Baskets (for odds and ends â blankets, cloths, dirty laundry) $20+

Traveling With Baby
â Infant car seat with detachable base (MoTH recommends Graco Infant Snug-ride) $100 for seat $40 for x-tra base

â MoTH also recommends Bugaboo Frog â too expensive
â Baby jogger (MoTH recommends City Series â yikes expensive)

â Baby back pack (for when baby is older & no longer in bjorn Justine offered hers)
â Pack N Play $100

â Cotton balls >$5
â Desitin >$10 ?
â Organizer for changing table $15 + - (Maybe either get a basket or hanging Koala organizer â maybe get both)
â Cloth diapers (for clean-up rags/changing table) â 4 $12 for pack of 12
â Diaper bag/baby sherpa backpack $25+ Look at the Koala Black Messenger back with pink accent/ Eddie Bauer and plain black messenger
â Diapers â donât get too many til know what he likes â we used pampers swadlers
â Vaseline & gauze pads
â Wet wipes

What are some child friendly activities to do with an infant?

Amanda

My husband and I like to take day trips, go to beaches, museums, galleries, amusement parks, etc.

We're pregnant but are exploring all areas of parenting and want to know what other parents do to stimulate their babies or if most people wait til toddler age?

Answer
As a newborn, they will really just sleep most places you go. As they hit about 6 months, they become both much more alert, and much easier to carry around, in my opinion (once they are sitting unsupported they can go in a backpack or sit on your hip in a sling). So around 6-7 months was when I started taking my dd places just because she might have fun there.

There are a couple things you have to remember with baby outings. The first is that your baby will probably only be able to be happily awake for a few hours w/o feedings and/or a nap (some babies nap well on the go, others don't). So for any longer excursion, you have to make sure you plan in stops/time for these things. Babies also usually have a pretty short attention span, so the best outings are ones where enough is going on to keep them interested, but not enough to by totally overwhelmign (like very loud or very crowded. I have found my dd does much better in overload situations when she is close to me in the sling, as opposed to in a backpack, in the shopping cart, etc). The final thing to consider is that babies are more sensitive to environmental conditions - they should not spend a lot of time in the sun or in extreme temperature conditions, esp since before 6 months sunscreen is not recommended.

So that said, I have found the best outings to often to be ones that can be done in just a few hours, between naps. Often these are very mundane things. Babies LOVE animals, so a trip to a local petshop can be a favorite outing. We also go to the library's children room/story time - besides reading and getting books, babies LOVE seeing other children. Many areas have science centers with special corners for young chilidren. My dd also enjoys the pool, going on hikes or walks (something we did since she was very young), going to the playground, and actually even going on errands (lots of people to see).

As far as the things you mention, amusement parks are overwhelming for young children usually, and while they like the beach, a few hours out in the sun is probalby enough at that age (plus you would need a ton of gear to keep the sand/salt/sun off). babies are pretty indifferent to things like museums - they would probably enjoy the people, its just a question of how bad you would feel if she was loud (babies are pretty unpredictable). So I guess my overall recommendation is to keep it short and local most of the time, while they are young. Longer expeditions like camping or the beach are possible, but tend to take a lot of planning, packing and vigilance, so most people only do day trips occasionally.

Of course there are tons of things you can do with your infant in your own house as well.

I want a diaper bag that is functionable? I would like for it to look like a big purse or even a back pack not sure yet. I going to start looking but dont know where to start. Any suggestions?

Answer
It totally depends on how much you want to spend! For my first baby I used a small sized backpack and just stuffed everything in it, I thought it was pretty functional, though not really big. After my daughter was born a friend of mine gave me a Fluvial bag; they are not cheap($120-$160), however I am a huge fan! There are different styles but they all have the appearance of a purse and are quite stylish. They have an exterior that can be easily wiped down and fabulous pockets inside for everything you would need. I will use mine as a purse even after the kids are needing a diaper bag. Another great one, though still on the pricier side($120-ish), is a Go-GaGa. It is more of a messenger bag, but has an amazing strap that you can spread like a wrap over your shoulder to distribute the weight better. the nice thing is you can usually find these on ebay for cheaper than you can in a shop! If you are looking for a less expensive option try Babies'r'us, they have multitudes of styles and brands for a lot less money! Good luck and have fun!

Question for all you moms and dads out there?

JennaH

OK- I was wondering if there is any special things that you think are a must have when shopping for a baby? I know the crib, car seat, stroller, etc. But what other products did you find really helpful?

Where there things you bought or were given that were a complete waste of money? Like a baby robe?

Answer
One gadget that was used all the time was a vaporizer. This gadget sits on a table top, plugs into the wall, gets filled with water and emits a super fine mist of moisture into the air. I found that by adding a cup or so of Listerine to the water, I could kill germs and add moisture to the air at one time. Babies are miserable when they get colds, runny noses etc. This seemed to provide almost instant relief and let the baby sleep better. Any baby that is sleeping better lets the parents sleep better too!

http://www.toysrus.com/family/index.jsp?categoryId=2256211&cp=2255984.2256207&cid=

Another good thing to get is a baby monitor... these are walkie talkie type gizmos that let's you put a small transmitter in the babies room and a receiver in the parents room or wherever. You get to hear everything that's going on in that room without havng to make constant checks in person. This gave us all kinds of confidence and the baby didn't have to start crying loudly to get somebody in there.

http://www.toysrus.com/search/index.jsp?kwCatId=&kw=monitor&origkw=monitor&f=Taxonomy/TRUS/2255957

Still another item is a baby backpack... Strap this thing on, put the baby in it and you can do just about everything you used to be able to do. Babies seem to love being back there, doing things with you, and seeing things from your perspective with the security of seeing you right there with them.

http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2301479&cp=&pg=2&f=Taxonomy%2FTRUS%2F2255957&origkw=backpack&kw=backpack&parentPage=search

If you really want to see them having fun... get a Johnny Jumper. This thing is a seat connected to a spring that attaches to the top of a door jamb. It's adjusted so the babies/toddler's feet barely touch the floor. When he/she pushes off with their feet the spring assists them up and their weight bounces them back down to their feet which just touch the floor. A baby gate is a must if you have areas of the house you just don't want the baby to enter. This thing slides open to squeeze into doorjambs or walkways. It is especially convenient to block off things like stairwells to keep a crawling baby from tumbling down the stairs.

A baby walker is a good things too. This is a baby seat mounted iinto a wheeled carriage that has a shelf of sorts in front of the baby. The babies feet stick out below and allow him/her to propel themselves all over the place. The shelf in front let's them have things to play with or their juice cup.

A subscription to Disney Rhyming Readers seemed to provide near endless reading material that both my kids absolutely loved. I must have reread stories from these hundreds of times. Enough so, that I started to make up my own story lines and substitute other rhyming words in place of the story's words. I don't know how we got a subscription to these... I don't even know if they are out of print but the kids loved them and so did we.

These things stick out in my mind after raising two very capable kids to adulthood. One owns and runs his own karate studio since he was sixteen and the other is an Olympic gold medalist swimmer that graduated high school a year early and is attending UC Berkeley on a full scholarship. You are reading words from a very proud dad!

A bike seat??

I want to start riding my bike with my daughter...she is 9.5 months...is she old enough? Or is should I wait? What age is ok?

Answer
At an absolute bare minimum the child has to be able to wear a bike helmet, which means their neck must be strong enough to support the weight. That happens at about 1 year of age and parents are advised to discuss it with their pediatrician -though I do not actually believe that pediatricians or family doctors have *any* training in this.

In some places (NY for example) it is the law that no child under age 1 be attached to a bike in any way.

http://www.bhsi.org/little1s.htm
Nobody we have met in the injury prevention field recommends taking an infant of less than 12 months in a bicycle child seat, trailer, sidecar or any other carrier. Nobody. And we do not either.
New York state law prohibits it. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission thinks it is dangerous to take a child under one year on a bicycle, and here is their rationale:

Maurice Keenan, MD, from the American Academy of Pediatrics [21], requested that a minimum age of 1 year be reflected on the label for helmets intended for children under age 5. This would better convey the message that infants (children under age 1) should not be passengers on a bicycle under any circumstance.

The Commission agrees with the commenter that children under 1 year of age should not be on bicycles. Children are just learning to sit unsupported at about 9 months of age. Until this age, infants have not developed sufficient bone mass and muscle tone to enable them to sit unsupported with their backs straight. Pediatricians advise against having infants sitting in a slumped or curled position for prolonged periods. This position may even be exacerbated by the added weight of a bicycle helmet on the infantâs head. Because pediatricians recommend against having children under age 1 as passengers on bicycles, the Commission does not want the certification label to imply that children under age 1 can ride safely.

Source: 16 CFR Part 1203 Safety Standard for Bicycle Helmets; Final Rule, page 11726

That explains why you will not find a child helmet on the market sized for a tiny tot. You certainly do not want to ride with a bare-headed child, and in some places it is illegal. In fact, several states have laws against taking children under one year of age on a bicycle, even with a helmet.

Parents love their babies and love their bicycles, so it is natural to want to put the two together. That thought occurs to every bicycling parent, generally before the child is born. We see messages on the Internet indicating that some parents do put their children in baby seats of one design or another and take them along on trailers starting as young as five weeks. Others use a baby backpack. At slightly older ages, people use front or rear-mounted child seats. A few (mostly in the UK) use sidecars. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. A disclaimer: our purpose here is to highlight the risks. We are hearing more now about undiagnosed brain injuries, with symptoms too subtle for doctors to detect in a clinical setting, but very real to families. And that comes to mind whenever someone asks us about babies and biking. We worry about your six-week-old entering the first grade six years from now with a small but detectable mental handicap. That is alarmist; this is an alarmist page!

For an official US Government view, we have excerpts from the Consumer Product Safety Commission's age-related guidelines for ride-on toys.

These 2 items are quite big combined and my backpack is already big enough for me to handle. Is there something that everybody uses to carry the accessories when they go backpacking? Should I get a small side bag to hold my cameras and lenses?

Answer
You could get a sling and have it slung in the front, therefore helping to distribute some of the weight. (Kind of like the baby slings or a big sling purse you can cross over your shoulder/chest). You could also look into something large enough to go around your waist with the bulk in the front of your body. Adding another bag to your back area would not have any benefit and you want to keep your hands free so these are my suggestions. Good luck and have fun! Be safe!

How do you clean the inside of a backpack?

Just In Da

Before Spring Break, I brought baby carrots and ranch to eat for lunch, in separate sandwich bags. Anyways, I didn't finish them so I put them in my backpack in one of the front compartments. I forgot about it entirely. I noticed that my stuff in my backpack was damp this morning, then I solved the mystery. I have wiped the compartment with a dry paper towel but there is still a residue and smell, and it has spread to the other compartments. What should I do?

Answer
Try handwashing it in the sink.
Or wiping it out with a wet cloth.

How can I make a flight more comfortable for two small children?

Hi, my children and I will be flying LA/NYC soon, and I would just like some tips as to what I can bring or how I can make the flight more comfortable for my two children... (they are 4 years & 2 weeks.)
nonldsinutah, no, I will not drug my children.

Answer
I'm a former Flight Attendant and I now fly a lot with my own three children. I can assure you first of all, both ages are good for flying. Four year olds understand better what is going on better than 2 or 3 year olds do and are easier to keep occupied in their seats. The baby is so small that s/he'll probably sleep the whole time.

Since I'm a Flight Attendant, I have to tell you that the ONLY way to fly safely with a baby is to have him or her in their own car seat on board. Babies under age 2 are allowed on laps but if anything goes wrong, they're not protected. Air travel is safe so there is very little chance of that happening. As a mom who has made many transaltantics with my own children, I have to admit that it was very nice to have somewhere to place the baby down. It was much more comfortable for me, my baby and everyone around us.

If you didn't book a seat, don't despair! Ask at check-in if it's possible to place an empty seat beside you. Often they do this for families. Check that your seat if FAA approved. Most sold in the U.S. are;
http://www.faa.gov/passengers/fly_children/crs/

If the seat is part of a travel system, you can gate check the stroller part at the door of the aircraft.

Many times on the internet and elsewhere you'll read that you're supposed to make the children suck something on take-off and landing. This is actually a bit of a myth and there's no reason to remove your baby from his or her car seat during the most important parts of the flight for keeping them safe. If they fall asleep, there is no reason to wake them. If you want to make them suck on something during ascent, not just take-off (when the plane leaves the ground) than by all means do so but I have never done anything special and they're fine.

What I do do is take them to the pediatricians' a few days before flying and have him make sure their ears are healthy and infection-free. Healthy ears can handle pressurization changes.

Try to book bulkhead seats (the ones with the wall in front). They are located in different places depending on the aircraft. These are convenient for children and some airlines even supply bassinets which attach to the wall. I will admit that this is rare but nice when you can get it.

Bring a change of clothes and at least 1/3 more supplies than you think you need. Have the 4 year old bring a backpack of his or her own toys. Bring one new toy to surprise him or her onboard.

If your baby is bottlefed, use the kind of bottles with plastic liners. Airplanes have really bad sinks for bottle washing and you can premeasure the powder beforehand to make the task even easier. Also be sure to get him or her used to a room-temperature bottle. Yes, they warm them onboard but be ready to feed your child anywhere, including check-in, security, etc. Since warmed bottles have no health-advantage to the child, make your life easier.

I have never used any sort of drugs to get my children to sleep and we fly between Europe and California about twice a year. It can be dodgy and twice while working, I saw children get the opposite reaction. They were totally wired! I wont risk it either.

My absolute secret to flying easily with a baby is to have a good baby carrier. I've tried all sorts but my sling worked best. The kind that dangle the child from the crotch, like Bjorns, aren't as comfortable. With a sling, wrap or pouch, you can slide the child in and out of any bassinet or car seat and it's nice to get on and off the aircraft hands-free, especially with other children in tow. I've had moms ask me where I got mine when they saw how much easier it made our flight.

About seven years ago I wrote an article on this subject for a local expat newsletter. I've since had lots of feedback from other parents and expanded it. I put it on a blog to share with other parents after seeing really dire advice on the web. I flew as a Flight Attendant for over 10 years before having my first baby and now I've been flying for 8 years with my own. Feel free to visit;

Do I need a car seat for my 2yr old to be used in an airplane?

EVEC

We will be flying to Texas and I wanted to know if we are required to take a car seat?

Answer
It is never required to use a carseat. That is up to the parents for all ages. Airline seatbelts are not designed for little children and don't hold them very well.

I'm a former Flight Attendant and spent 10 years seeing and helping other parents fly with their kids before I had my own. Little did I realize that I'd be travelling with mine between Europe and California twice a year, plus shorter flights inbetween, virturally all alone. I've been doing this since my 8 year old was 4 months old. Almost all flights were with them in carseats. The only time I haven't was when I was prevented from doing so by foreign carriers.

I assume you're already in the U.S. and you'll be flying an American carrier. That wont happen to you. Since your 2 year old has a seat, you have the right to use a FAA approved carseat.

Check the one you already have for a FAA "sticker" which now is usually simply on the side information bar. Usually there's a little airplane and it says "...has been approved for use on aircraft..." etc. Most U.S. carseats are FAA approved. If it's not, which is unlikely, consider borrowing (trading?) or simply buy another. Good ones go for as little as $40.

I recommend this option over using a CARES harness, which isn't as secure and can only be used inflight. At $75, it seems steep for such a one-purpose gizmo but it's your money to spend as you wish!

Having the carseat onboard guarentees that the it wont be damaged or lost in baggage and you can use it right away when you leave the airport in Texas, assuming you'll be doing so by car. I had a bad experience with a car company rental seat and most Carseat techs don't recommend you use them (wish I had that bit of advice!)

Here's a link for you which shows the FAA approval writing and, if you scroll down, a picture of the CARES harness.
http://www.faa.gov/passengers/fly_children/crs/

To get it through the airport, you have several options. There are carseat bags which you can wear like a backpack. These didn't appeal to me, since I usually fly alone with my three. There is also the pricey GogoKidz cart;
http://www.go-baby.com/Products/gogokidz.html

It doesn't fit all carseats and is expensive at $80-90.

I simply put my carseat on a all-metal luggage cart (a souvenir of the fi

Furniture
â Crib â (Da Vinci Roxanne with drawer and conversion kit) $260
â Mattress for Crib â

â Ottoman for glider (storkcraft) $70
â Hanging bookshelf (idea to hand shelf 12â to 18â below the ceiling around room to add lots of display and storage space)

Traveling With Baby
â Infant car seat with detachable base (MoTH recommends Graco Infant Snug-ride) $100 for seat $40 for x-tra base

â Diaper bag/baby sherpa backpack $25+ Look at the Koala Black Messenger back with pink accent/ Eddie Bauer and plain black messenger

Answer
Yaaaa...you don't need 95% of that stuff...lol

Okay....so here is what I needed and used in the 1st week

Infant car seat
Stroller (I actually had 2...1 regular and 1 jogger..but the jogger was borrowed...I didn't need it, but was super glad I had it as it was easier to work with on hills and in the park etc)
Diaper bag
Diapers and wipes
Sleepers/onesies/socks/pants/shirts any other clothing you want/need
Crib and crib sheets
Monitor
Bassinette or playyard or cradle...whatever you want to use while baby is in your room beside your bed - i still don't own a playyard, we used a borrowed cradle and that was fine...my son is 16 months...sometimes I wish I had a playyard, but you definitely do not need one
Breast pump and storage bags
Bottles/nipples (if you are breastfeeding, you only need 1 or 2 bottles...I had 3 and never opened the 3rd bottle...I only used 1 and left 1 at my mom's house so that if she was watching him she could put frozen breastmilk in the bottle...hence the breast pump
They don't need toys for some time...they don't play with toys in the first week...but it is nice to have some car seat toys for entertainment
A play mat is very nice to have
Soothers (2 or 3)
Soother clip
Vitamin D drops
Bouncer/swing...I had both, but only needed 1..he would sleep in the swing, it was awesome!
Breast pads and cream (For sore nipples)
Burp cloths...but you can use old towels too
Infant Bathtub (very cheep...just a regular one, you don't need the ones with hoses/showers etc)
Wash cloths/towels..again you can use regular ones
Mild baby bath soap
Gripe Water (excellent for gas etc) non-alcoholic
Cornstarch (Not peneten etc for diaper rash) this works way better and is much milder on skin!

Hmmmm...that is about it!!

There are things that are nice to have...and you can totally decide and ask for those things too...but the must haves are above!

Hope this helps!
