Good family activities to do with my three year old daughter?

She seems to be getting a bit tired of the park, aquarium, zoo, and ponds. Generally this something my wife and I do every other weekend or so, just to get out of the house and spend some time together.

Also, we have twin five months old, and we'd rather not go hiking / camping with the infants, as you can imagine.

My daughter generally enjoys anything with animals, and crafts. She doesn't particularly enjoy anything 'girly' from what we've gathered. Likes to figure out puzzles, and always finding ways to make things 'work'. (She'll find a broken toy and will attempt to make it work again.) Extremely shy, if anyone comes at her too quickly, she's retreat behind my wife's leg.

Open to any serious suggestions, :) Thank you in advance.
My daughter hates the water, refuses to go to the pools / lakes with us. She will only go to the frog ponds with us to try and catch frogs in the puddles. Thanks for the suggestion though! :)

Answer
Some more ideas outside of the house...

-- Museums -- art, science, children's, etc. Most places have things for young children.
-- Library story hour
-- Children's theater production (maybe just for the 3-year-old and one parent, no babies)
-- Pet store. You don't have to buy anything -- just look at the animals.
-- Indoor playgrounds -- mall, McDonald's, other parks
-- Check out parks with short hiking trails (and you can wear the babies in backpack carriers), or find a new playground in your area.
-- Find a way to make old adventures more interesting. For example, our zoo has specific animal feeding times, so when we want something new, we choose a couple animals that we want to watch get fed that day. Or we splurge and buy the crackers to feed the giraffes ourselves or the food for the lorikeets. Or we watch for special events or shows on certain days.
-- Also, keep trying the pools/lakes. She may grow to like them over time.

Things to do at home...
-- Draw with chalk. You can do pictures, hopscotch, draw a maze or a path to follow, etc.
-- Ride bikes/scooters up and down the sidewalk.
-- Use blue painter's tape on hardwood or linoleum floors to make hopscotch or paths inside (for rainy/cold days).
-- Puzzles. (Maybe you could pick up a couple new ones.)
-- Board games like Candy Land.
-- Paint with water. You can do this on the driveway, the side of the house, or anywhere. Just get a cup of water and a paintbrush, and it disappears as it dries. Aquadoodle mats are fun for indoors.
-- Take a walk while you push babies in the stroller and she pushes a doll in her own stroller.
-- Build with blocks.
-- Take a magnifying glass or binoculars, and go on an animal hunt in your neighborhood. Look for birds, squirrels, rabbits, chipmunks, and all kinds of bugs.
-- Get an easel and some dry-erase markers, and let her draw and erase as much as she wants.
-- Since she likes puzzles and building, let her help with minor repairs around the house. If you're doing some hammering to hang a picture on the wall, let her help hammer a nail or two into a spare piece of wood. When my kids were 3, their preschool teacher had them hammer big pieces of styrofoam together, and then they got to paint what they had created. I think they even got to use a real saw to help saw the styrofoam before hammering it.
-- Get some sewing cards and let her "sew" them with shoelaces.
-- Start collections of leaves, flowers, or rocks, and let her sort and count them.
-- Blow bubbles.
-- When it rains, let her go out and jump in all the puddles.
-- Turn on all kinds of music, and dance around the house. She can even play along with her own toy or homemade instruments.
-- Read books. Lots and lots of books.

Honestly, there are so many things you can do with a 3-year-old. If you live in or near a major city, there are probably tons of things you haven't even discovered yet, and there's plenty you can do at home as well. Have fun!

What do I need on an airplane flight with my 15 month old son?

What Up!

I'll be going alone. Its only an hour and a half flight. :-) I know I have to bring the stroller and carseat. He will be sitting in my lap. I will only be bring a small backpack and my purse.

Answer
Make sure to pack plenty of things to entertain your child, such as a few books, toys, a portable DVD player (be sure to bring extra batteries) or let him use your laptop (make sure it's fully charged) with a few movies, and one or two comfort things such as a favorite blankie or stuffed animal. I always bring a small pillow and blanket from home for my children (even now) because I know 100% that they are clean, and my children are accustomed to them.

My children like to bring along their own coloring books, a Doodle Pad, their Leap Pads (with a few booklets), and scrap paper that they can make their own drawings with and play games such as tic-tac-toe. My daughter used to like to bring along a doodle bear when she was younger so that she could draw on that as well, and my son likes to bring along some action figures to play with. I found that buying a Rose Art kit is great! It has crayons, markers, coloring books, coloring sheets, and stickers that they can color. It definitely keeps them entertained!

You can also play games like pat-a-cake, or I-spy, and tell stories to your child as well. If you tell a story, try to make it an interactive one where he has a part in it so he stays interested.

You might also consider going to the store and letting your child (I let my children start this at the age of one) pick out his own carry on bag and a few inexpensive toys that will be used only once you are on the plane. Be sure to pick out a few toys without him seeing so that he has an extra surprise when he opens his carry on.

Bring Snacks! just add water packets of food, cheerios, goldfish, animal crackers, dried fruit, etc. are great. New regulations also allow you to take beverages (including water) from home as long as they are less than 3oz (100ml), -OR- beverages (including water) of any size that you have purchased from inside the security area onto planes. You can also bring a limited amount of baby food, yogurt, cheese, puddings, etc. with you also as long as they are in containers less than 3oz (100ml)
http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm#10

As long as your child is with you, you are able to take as much formula, breast milk, or regular milk that you will need for you child for the duration of the time you will spend in the airport and on the flight (as long as it is within reason). And no, you will NOT have to taste it - no matter what form you bring it in.

All that you must do is:

1. Separate the milk from the liquids, gels, and aerosols in your quart-size (1 liter) zip-top bag.
2. Declare you have the items to one of the Security Officers at the security checkpoint.
3. Present these items for additional inspection once reaching the X-ray. These items are subject to additional screening
http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/children/formula.shtm

Save your money when it comes to buying water though because the Flight Attendants will provide you with hot or cold water (or any other drink) free at any time that you request, no matter how many times you request it.

A car seat is not mandatory, but is highly recommended for children under 40lbs. Since your child is under two, you are allowed to hold him as a lap child, meaning that he will have to sit in your lap the entire time. Try to book a bulkhead (front) seat where you will have more room, and a bassinet. Bassinets are limited, and not available on every flight. If the bassinet is available (they can only be used in bulkhead seats) it will attach to the front wall for you to put your child in (however you can not use this during taxi, take-offs, landings, or turbulence).

This is not the safest way for a child to fly and the airlines recommend children to have their own seat with a child safety device (CRS). I advise using a CRS (Child Restraint System) because it is safe for the child (especially during turbulence, makes them feel secure, is more comfortable for both parent and child, will help your child sleep, and gives both of you the opportunity to relax a bit. A CRS is a hard-backed child or infant or child safety seat that is approved by the government for use in both motor vehicles and aircraft.

Since you haven't booked a separate seat for your child, be nice on check-in and see if they can "block" the seat next to you. They will then only use it if they absolutely need it - giving you a "free" seat for your child if available.

There is also a new device that is approved by the FAA for airline use ONLY. It is called CARES (Child Aviation Restraint System) and costs $75. It weighs 1 pound, is certified for all phases of flight (taxiing, take off, turbulence and landing), adjusts to fit ALL size airplane seats, and is approved for kids 22â44 lbs.
http://www.kidsflysafe.com/

If you choose not to use your childs car seat for the plane ride, you will be allowed to gate check it (along with a stroller). It will not count towards your checked luggage. This means that you will need to take it with you to your boarding gate, and one of the handlers will take it from you before you depart, tag it, and put it in a special compartment for you. When you exit the plane, it will be waiting for you at the door as well.

I've been flying internationally and domestically with my children since they were 2 months (now 8, 6, & 3 months). At least three trips a year are the children and I traveling internationally (14+ hours each way) alone. In addition to that, we do another 8-10 international and domestic flights a year as a family. I have never had any problems with my children on any of the flights.

I wrote a small article about flying with children that goes more in-depth, gives security rules and regulations for the US, EU, UK, and Australia, offers tips and tricks for the travel, etc. http://www.angelfire.com/jamiehassen79/flying_children.html

If I can be of any more help or assistance, please feel free to contact me.

emcee lexi

with all of the reasons to hate a car (environmental damage, cost, maintenance, etc) why haven't we invented backpack air jets yet?... wouldn't it be great to just strap on a backpack, pop out a couple of handlebars, lift off, and fly?!? it would be perfect for commuting to work, saving the vehicles for trips to the grocery store for bulk shopping...

I don't know... It just seems like we're way behind our potential...

Answer
Could you imagine getting a DUI on one of those babies. LOL, the thought of getting pulled over for swerving your jetpack just makes me laugh.

Usually never remember dreams, now I'm having really violent ones..why?

Slumper B

30 yr old male, for the longest time I could never remember my dreams very well but I always new that I had them, just couldnt remember the details the next day-but i know they werent violent. I'm a new dad of a 4 month old which is basically the only thing different in my life right now, all other stressors are still ticking.. I'm typically laid back with a painfully aggressive angry side but like i said my dreams have never been violent. Within the last 2 weeks I've had 3 dreams I can remember clearly. First was a woman flying around on her jet backpack, she got too close to a helicopter and got shredded into pieces and landed in a giant pool of blood near my feet in a public setting, the people were horrified but in the dream it didnt seem to bother me? 2nd was a weird one where a woman was driving my car with my wife and baby in the back seat, the woman all of a sudden got weird and or possessed and ran the car into a guard rail, everyone seemed okay, even baby but I was obviously pissed and started punching her in the face repeatedly, then we appeared in her apt and I continued to go everywhere she went and just kept pounding her in the her face non stop, my wife was there and my friends sister was there out of nowhere whom I'm havent seen or talked to in years and nobody seemed to really mind? My most recent dream involves a young teenage male being at the same house as my wife and I and baby hanging out with a younger sister of ours. I asked him a question, he was a smart ass, took my baby outside without my permission, I went after him, brought him back inside, he pulled a gun, I took it and pushed him onto the couch, shot him in the chest, he drooled, didnt seem dead, shot him higher in the chest and then in the neck and then he seemed slowed down and then I think i woke up? I guess I'm not really bothered just really curious. Is it really because I have a relatively new baby? I've never hit a woman, never shot a gun and never had any strange run ins with helicopters. I havent watched SAW lately although i do enjoy them...Any ideas?

Answer
First of all, congratulations on your newborn. Second of all, relax!!!!!!!

It's all in your head because as of recent, you have this sprout of life in your own life that quite literally is the branch of life. The most amount of love you as a father can have is towards your kids and our mind takes advantage of that sometimes. You have bad dreams about good people because it's simply the underlying terror that we all have; bad things happening to good people, especially the people closest to us whom we know are good.

It sounds weird but then all dreams are. They never mean anything literally (sometimes they do). You're being told by your own mind you love your kid and you're scared of trouble coming down that kids life.

does wearing a backpack stop me from growing?

I have wore a heavy backpack, like a couple pounds for 5 (or a couple more) days and i am 12 years old. Recently, i have been growing very fast and now i have this heavy backpack and i was just wondering if it stops me from growing that fast..

Answer
A couple of pounds or five pounds is a very light backpack. Wearing 50lbs won't stop you growing.
Growing is part of your makeup....it's what you are so be happy with the way things are going.
At ten I was normal height. At 12 I was taller than my Dad. At 14 I was over six feet and levelled off at 6'2" when I was 15.
I've worn backpacks since I was small and hiked for over forty years now. My three girls are all tall and they wore backpacks from as soon as they walk a few hundred yards.
To them it was like part of normal clothing for being outdoors because their Mum and Dad were out hiking with them and carrying them on child carriers from before they could walk, even in the Alps, child in front and rucksack at the back. We did the shopping with backpacks, took picnic stuff in backpacks, had backpacks with us almost everywhere, either big ones or small day packs.

is it safe to sleep outside in the backyard in a tent?

Kelly

My children are 10 12 and 6 , they want to sleep in the backyard in our big tent. I live in a faily decent part of town. but are they too young to be out there all night by themself or am i just being too strict? My kids think im the worst mom ever today. someone let me know what you would do. i cant sleep out there with them all night, because of my shoulder issue. what can be some options>

Answer
My kids were sleeping in a tent at 5000 feet when they were only just walking. We carried them. Child carrier in front and rucksack at the back.
At ten they were higher than that...staying in mountain huts at 7000 feet and carrying backpacks with their night clothes and teddy bears in. And wearing gorgeous little Austrian walking boots.....
Loved it! Playing with snow under the baking Alpine sun in July!
Seeing mountains 50 miles across the valley and sunrises lighting the peaks with pink and orange light.
Ten year old eyes seeing that at 6am and eating breakfast outdoors with paradise for a view.....what a joy for them.
Lay down for a nap at midday with sweet Alpine flowers all around them. See the lake a thousand feet below shimmering in the sunlight, eat with children from other lands and sing with them outside the hut at night under the canopy of stars...sweet mountain songs coming back to us in soft echos across the deep valleys.
Reckon they sleep well at night, wake happy in the morning? They still do.

http://www.johnbiggar.com/images/world-climbing/matterhorn-at-sunrise.jpg . . . . .
Got a bad shoulder? You can be warmer in a sleeping bag outside than under the duvet indoors.
I couldn't walk for two years. Lost a lot of school.
Later I was in an international marching event...top civilian and military teams from around the world.....The Nijmegan Marches. Tough one. Succeed with honor for team and country. And then enjoy the blister parties till dawn....a huge and happy event.
Walking cycling and camping out got me fit when I could walk again. It got my legs working. It gave me paradise again.
Being out. Like yours are hoping for. Adventure....fun.
They need it. They're asking.
You can get an air bed for a few dollars for occasional use, or pay more for velvety cozy luxury...still cheap. You can be comfortable.
Blow them up as hard or as soft as you like. Whatever your shoulder likes.
Variable mattress technology....try that with a spring mattress. A big double one all for you if you want.
Give the kiddies a bit of fun...happy their eyes up laughing..
Children love adventure if it isn't already smothered out of them. Play at pirates marooned on a desert island....spaceships, pioneer explorers.
Nooooo...you're not the worst by a long chalk. Some moms wouldn't even think of letting the children out at at all.
All covered in cotton wool and treated with total care and mommying loving and smothered with it. Kids in safe soft wrappers.
Misery for them. They can't grow like that. Kids need adventure.....it's fun.
Make it as safe as you can.....don't be too obvious about it by telling everyone you're sleeping out. You be there too.
Tucked up and warm, just like indoors.
Have a good night.
Midnight feast on the outdoor cookie stove...paradise for them.
Children grow into the space they've got. Give them more space they grow more....and they learn more.
It still has limits... you're just applying the limits to a bigger space.
Have fun.
Give it a couple of days if you like so you've time to get organized. Get some comfort things going for yourself. It's not on top of a mountain, just in the backyard. But you need a bit of time. Keeps them happy if it all goes smooth. That's means happy Mom too....
Get some goodies to eat outside ...a game to play...a story under the stars....nice warm bed for them...and lots of smiles.
Then you're ready to say yes...and see those happy eyes laughing with you....
Yahaaaayyyyy!!

How to dress like a girl raver? ?

baby backpack babies r us image

Isabella.(

Okay so for Halloween I'm planning to be a raver since this is a costume I can put together myself.
Now I know ravers dress really colorful with bright make up, glowsticks, and lotsa candy but I need details.
Like, what kind of shirt should I wear, shoes, pants/shorts, and a hairstyle idea would be greatly appreciated. Please and thank you! ^.^
Um maybe I should've put in "I want to be a CUTE raver."
C: Hahaha.

Answer
Don't be shy about what you're wearing. You're going to have to wear sparkly bright things that are going to stick out. There is no room for being shy.
When you're going to a party, dress lightly. You're probably going to get really, really hot. So don't wear jackets and layers and layers of clothing, unless you want to smell.
Try wearing baby tees, or bright neon stuff from the eighties. (for shirts, that is)
Wear brightly colored, sparkly makeup and eyeliner. But don't overdo it, you don't want to look like a whore.
Wear a backpack. Not like a school bag, but a stuffed animal backpack. Probably something from a cartoon. Toys-R-Us is a great place to go to.
For bottoms, during the day it's a good idea to wear tight skinny jeans or (for girls) Capri pants, but skirts are always good, too.
Choose any type of shoes (just not flip-flops or anything like that). Stay away from basketball type of shoes (use common sense here.)
Kandi is a good idea, too. If you don't know what that is, do your research.

Different Ravers carry different things depending on their party style. I'm ususally prepared for any situation so I will give you a list of things I keep in my bag:

Money- You need it to get in, for water and goodies if the party thrower is charging (which is bogus if they are), and for any substance that you may feel you need in order to have a good time.

I.D.- For some reason, some parties require you to be over 16.

Vicks Inhaler- More commonly referred to by Ravers as a Sea Breeze.

Vicks VapoRub- Just inhaling it feels good. Especially when you're on E.

Particle Mask- E-Mask, you put your Vicks VapoRub in it and just breath.

Mini Massager- Who doesn't like a massage any way?

Stuffed Animal- E-Babies, I generally carry about 6 with me.

Blinky Stuff- Um, it's dark, and the brighter your flashies the better. Glow sticks are great too.

Stickers- Everyone loves stickers

Glitter- Go glitter someone. Glitter is happy!

Pen and Notebook- I like to refer to it as an E-Book. All my Raver pals sign it and give me their digits, e-mail addies, etc.

Suckers- Yes, these are a seperate food group! Suckers are yummy, and they help you avoid lock jaw.

Binky- Pacifier. These things are addictive whether you are rolling or not.

Comb- Brush, pick, whatever.

Hair ties- or clipies cause your hair's too short. or they look cute

Chapstick- Sucking on Binkies and Suckers all night will give you chapped lips.

First Aid Kit- At least a couple of Band-Aids ppl.

What kind of diaper bag should I get?

Momma2M

I'm on another diaper bag search for Mother's Day, as I am getting myself one (: . I've bought 3 so far. One that was customized (too big), A carters one (too small )& recently the Skip Hop Grand Central. I haven't found anything wrong with the bag, it has everything I'm looking for, just maybe too many different compartments. So I was wondering if any mom (or dad) has any idea of what type of Diaper Bag is good. I'm kinda liking the ones that don't look like a diaper bag at all. Kinda the Storksak ones. I like Vera Bradley also. I am starting to like the leather also. I want something that I can use later once I've stopped carrying a DB. My daughter is 7mo. old so I will carrying around one for a little while longer, but I don't need such a big bag, but yet something that can hold everything I need, in case something comes up. Any ideas?
I went to Buy Buy Baby which has the jujube bff and I could hardly fit my diaper clutch in there. I think it was tiny, but maybe I didn't try organizing it different ways. I wish it would work because I think it is so cute & plus I could keep it for when she's a toddler and the backpack style would be great! Cause everyone knows you gotta be on the go with a toddler running everywhere so I wont have time to constantly be holding a bag on my arm.

Answer
Ju-ju-be does fantastic diaper bags!
They are so stylish, you just look like you're carrying a cute oversized handbag!
My favourite is the BFF bag. It can be carried in so many ways, backpack, handbag, shoulder bag etc.
I live in New Zealand, and a friend sent me over it and I love it so much.
Here's the site: have a look through the site for all the specs and features.

http://shop.ju-ju-be.com//Diaper-Bags-for-Moms-CID288.aspx

EDIT: I'm sorry I couldn't have been of more help. I would list the diaper bag I had for my first baby which was fantastic, but it's a New Zealand brand and they don't ship out of country :(
I did however find this bag that looks great:

http://www.poshtots.com/diaper-bags/diaper-bags-by-style/all-diaper-bags/petunia-pickle-bottom-marigold-medallions-wistful-weekender/1377/2156/1309/32635/poshproductdetail.aspx

It's got the shoulder or clutch straps, and looks a good size!
Alternatively you could pop into your basic baby store (like babies r us) and see what they have in. My first bag was a cheapie but so great! Great quality too! If you look in store you know the exact size and shape. Personally I wouldn't worry about the material of the bag, if you like it don't let the material stop you buying it :)

I need to know what furniture, clothing, and other necessities to properly bring home my newborn baby.

Answer
You'll find a lot of people recommend things that are nice to have but not necessary. Obviously you need clothes, diapers, wipes, soap/shampoo, car seat, baby nail clippers, and feeding supplies.

Nursing pillows are nice, but any pillow can prop your arm/baby up. Bouncers can help, but didn't work for my son. A crib will eventually be necessary, but a lot of babies are happiest sleeping with Mom or in the car seat for the first few months. Changing tables are easier on your back, but I change my 7 week old on a changing mat that came with my diaper bag. Baby bathtubs are a good idea, but many babies have been bathed in the sink. Diaper warmers are a waste of money.

If you're breastfeeding, a pump can give you some freedom. A swing saved my sanity with both my children. A thermometer can relieve middle of the night worries (ear thermometers work better on older children. A newbon's ear canal is too small for an acurate reading). Along those lines, mylincon drops for gas and baby Tylenol or Motrin (don't wait until you need it). A dresser (you have to put the clothes somewhere), but a cheap rubbermaid set of drawers from Wal-Mart lasted my son for a while. Rattles and other toys will become necessary, but for the first little bit your face will be their favorite thing to look at (along with lights, ceiling fans, and large high contrast objects like furniture and the tv). A sling or some type of baby carrier is a good idea(I have a backpack and a sling and prefer the sling). I don't use my stroller very often, but I'm glad I have it. A baby monitor is necessary if your home is large, but can be useful in a small apartment too (it helps me to be able to relax and not rush my shower). My kids didn't care about a crib mobile at first, but as their vision improved they did like it more. You will need a diaper pail, but at first (until they start solid food) the diapers don't smell too bad and can be thrown in a regular trash can. Many hospitals will give you a free diaper bag (I got 2 with my son). As they grow books will always be a necessity.

Any suggestions on a baby carriet for a 2 yr. old who is almost 30 pounds?

Kirstie

I have a Moby Wrap which I used from about 1 month old until he was 10 months (once he started walk) I have used it a couple of more times but seems to be uncomfortable for both of us. While I travel by bus from time to time (no strollers allowed to be open) and he won't sit still for long periods, I would live something that is comfortable for both of us.

Answer
Maybe the Toddler Baby Hawk. I have one, but my 3 yr old is 30 pounds and he is getting a bit big to carry. I carry on my back, still comfortably. The next stage up is an actual backpacking style carrier.

How much money should I save for a new baby?

I want to start trying for a baby next year. I plan on taking between 3-6 months off from work. How much money should I set aside? Thanks.

Answer
If you plan to be off work that long, I would save a few thousand.

On baby items alone, brand new for the most part, we spent about $1500. Luckily our baby shower brought us a TON of diapers, clothing, and major expenses (stroller and car seat). The most expensive items will be clothes and diapers. Babies tend to go through them like crazy. My son is wearing 3-6 month clothing and he is 9 weeks old.

He is breastfed, so if you plan to feed your baby formula...add that to your expenses as well. I am not sure how much formula costs. BUT you also have to figure how much baby might eat during growth spurts. My baby ate double during weeks 2,3, and 6. They literally will want to eat every 2 hours even when they seems to eat every 3 or 4 normally.

Here is a breakdown of our expenses:

Clothes: $75 (bought a few pajamas for warmer weather)
Diapers: $40 (newborns tend to go through 12-14 day, mine goes through 8 or so, we buy pampers sensitive)
Wipes: $20 (extra large box with 6 refills)
Ointment: $7 (Aveeno or Butt paste)
Baby wash: $7 (we use Aveeno, baby skin dries out with fragrance washes)

* I didn't add the toys we bought him this month because with a newborn, the first month is literally sleep, poop, eat, sleep. That is about it. Then about month two it would be nice to buy books, floor gyms...etc.

**Buy a white noise machine or mobile (helps them sleep)
**If not breastfeeding, buy a binky
**Receiving blankets! They sleep better when swaddled (about $6-8 a pack)
**Hand mittens, they claw like crazy
**hats
**They go through a stage where they never want to leave your side, buy a safe sling or baby **backpack to carry him/her around in....this stage usually sets in around 3rd week.

Any suggestions for a backpack baby carrier?

jveryrad

I have a very active 15month old daughter. She likes to grab objects and destroy them. She is difficult to bring to a store. Yesterday, I had to hold her while shopping in hardware stores because she insisted on opening packages or bottles if I let her down. The shopping carts can be very dirty in a hardware store.

Does anyone use a backpack baby carrier for their toddlers for shopping? I don't do much hiking, and I use a stroller to take her on walks. So I would just use it to take her where I don't want her to run around.

Is it safe to get into? Is there a risk of dropping her while putting the backpack on? Any other uses for this? Any suggestions for brands? I heard Tough Traveler is good. Thanks.

Answer
I love my backpack for shopping, and I can still carry my soon to be 3 year old. This is the one I have http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441776409&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302735239&bmUID=1160421939450 . We bought it almost 5 years ago when our oldest was the right size for it. It still looks brand new. I used it for shopping and long walks, my husband uses it for hiking. Have fun!

I know how this might sound (by me being a teenager and all) but my mom is ruining my life. I know that lots of teenage girls say this but she really is ruining my life. 7 Years ago she met my stepdad and she snuck off and married him without me knowing, then she got pregnant and didn't decide to tell me about it until she was 5 months...I know that some people might think that it was none of my business but my mom and I were very close and we told each other everything. Well fast forward a few years she is madly in love with my stepdad and she is kinda like his slave...she did everything for him and he did nothing...he barely helps us do anything like taking care of my little sister (which I have practically raised her) or helping us clean up... my mom wanted me to just kiss his butt...then he started doing music with his friends and then he convinces her that he's gonna get this record deal...so of course my mom goes along with it (I didn't and I tried to warn her) so she packs us up and moves us down to Atlanta...now he is flat broke and all of his so called "musically talented" friends hate him and they all left him...so now I'm 17 stuck in a place that I don't wanna be, no car, no money, no friends (like I had before), I get harassed at this school down here...(I was handcuffed for not letting a guy at my school take my backpack and rip it) and now the same guy is harassing me every day...I really blame my mom for how my life is now but I don't want to hurt her feelings...I mean my cousin who's the same age as me had a baby at 14 and even she's living happier and doing more of the things that I wanna do. I just feel so depressed and I feel its my mom's fault...I mean she's let this random guy just come in and put my life on hold...I'm so confused and I think I'm losing my mind by being stuck in the house all the time with nothing to do but "study"...what advice can anyone give me for my situation?
Please no mean or rude comments...and I can't get therapy or counseling

Answer
It took me almost 35 years to figure out how to answer this question. When you wake up every morning, you have two choices. You choice to either be happy or sad. I now chose to be happy.

People sense your unhappiness at school. Start walking around with a smile on your face and see how many new friends you will have.

As a parent, there is NOTHING that I would do to purposefully hurt or make my children unhappy. I believe that your mom is the same. A honest discussion with your mom about your situation is needed. Please make a list to help you with your discussion points. Prioritize what you want to talk about. Maybe only talk to her about the top two priorities. Try to keep blame to a minimum.

Best of luck.

Convertible car seats...?

Rene

I have twin boys that turning 1 in a couple of weeks. They spend a significant amount of time in 3 different cars (mine, my husbands, and grandparents...they babysit). Which means that we need SIX car seats. At their cheapest they are $45. Multiply that by six and it gets expensive. Is anyone aware of any company that gives discounts to parents of multiples or know of any company that sells them cheaper? Any help would be much appreciated.

Answer
Whoa! Well, you are right on wanting seats for each vehicle they are in frequently. The more often a car seat is uninstalled/reinstalled, the more likely it will be installed incorrectly as we rush to get it in and out. So it is a need. Babies R Us has a multiples discount, but you do have to buy them all at the same time. From their website: "BABIES "R" US MULTIPLE BIRTH DISCOUNT

Does Babies "R" Us offer a multiple birth discount? We are pleased to inform you of our multiple birth discount. Babies "R" Us defines a multiple birth as parents with two or more babies the same age. We offer our customers 10% off two or more of the same items purchased in the same order (e.g. two cribs, two bedding sets, two strollers, etc.). The discount can not be combined with any other offers, including sale priced items, and applies to the following categories only: furniture, bedding sets and baby gear, including car seats, strollers, travel yards, highchairs, swings, gates, exersaucers/walkers and backpack/carriers. Double strollers and matching infant car seats are also eligible for the multiple birth discount. This offer is not available on any special purchase items. Corporate sales do not qualify for the multiple birth discount. "

The cheapest seat you are referring to is the Cosco Scenera, and its actually not a bad seat. Not hard to install, easy to use, and rear faces to 35lbs (more on why that's so great later!) The bad part is, you get what you pay for. It only forward faces to 40lbs and the average child will outgrow it at 2-3 years old which means at that time you'll be out shopping for 2 new harnessed seats again, b/c 2-3 year olds can not be put in booster seats. If you're ok with that, I'd suggest getting a couple of these for some of the cars. They'd last long enough that you can work towards saving for the harnessed seats they're going to need when they outgrow them.

As for the least expensive in convertible seats that you will get your money's worth out of and really like, here's the pick of the litter:
When shopping Remember these rules:
1)the BEST seat is the one that fits your child, fits your car, and will be used correctly 100% of the time. (This is why convenience features DO make a difference and ARE worth the money! If its easy to use, you're more likely to use it correctly.
2)children need to stay rear facing as long as possible.
Turning kids forward at 20lbs/1year is an outdated practice that could cost you your child's life!
A)A forward-facing child under 2 years old is 5 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a crash than a rear-facing child of the same age.
B)A child's vertabrae do not fully fuse until 3-6 years old, before then, she is at great risk for internal decapitation. The spinal column can stretch up to 2 inches in a crash BUT the spinal cord can only stretch up to 1/4 inch before it snaps and baby is gone.
C)Current research suggests that children under the age of two years are 75 percent less likely to die or be seriously injured when they are riding rear facing.
D)In a recent article from Injury Prevention, it was found that the odds of severe injury to forward facing children age 12-23 months old was 5.32 times higher than a rear facing child. (Car Safety Seats For Children: Rear Facing For Best Protection; Injury Prevention 2007; 13:398-402.)
3)Once you do turn them forward facing, they need to stay in a 5 point harness as long as possible. 4 years/40lbs is the minimum for riding in a booster, and most 4 year olds have no business using one yet. If they can't sit upright for an entire trip, they need the harness of a car seat still. And, even if they do sit properly, a 5 point harness is safer, so you want to keep them in one as long as possible. This is important to consider b/c most car seats only forward face to 40lbs. My son just turned 3, and is in the 95th% for height and weight - 40" tall and weighs 41lbs. He outgrew the 40lbs seats shortly after his 2nd birthday. It was a total waste of money. He now has a Britax Marathon, which goes to 65lbs, and will be able to fit it for some time yet. If I'd have bought it when he was born, I could have had one car seat this whole time instead of the 3 I wasted money on. They are more expensive for many reasons, this is one.

So...knowing all that, here's some about specific seats. Please don't get a Graco Comfort Sport. Car seat techs call it the 'crappysport'. LOL Its a crappy seat that won't last your child very long b/c it has a really short shell. The straps twist all the time, and if they're twisted they won't support your child in a wreck properly. They're hard to install. There's nothing good about these seats except perhaps they're cheap sometimes. Ditto the Safety1st 3-in-1/Cosco Alpha Omega/Eddie Bauer 3-in1 seats. These are all the same company - same seat, just different covers. They stink. Hard to install, b/c of narrow belt paths. Ever tried to wash a skinny cup by hand? Now imagine that skinny cup with pointy edges. That's what putting your hand through these to install them is like. AND they have too short a shell to really go to 40lbs. And that's another misleading thing the box says - 5-100lbs. What the box fails to mention (you don't find out until reading the manual!) is that the harness only goes to 40lbs, NOT 100lbs! After 40lbs it must be used as a booster. And they do not make good boosters. Also, most kids have to use boosters until they're at least 8 years old. Car seats expire 6 years after the date of manufacture, so no matter what they say it is NOT the last seat you'll ever need to buy.

The Britax Marathon/Boulevard/Decathalon (These 3 are the same seat, just different variances of luxury additions, with the Marathon being the cheapest base model) can be found for regular price of $269, and on sale at Albee Baby online for $209-$219. The Marathon a wide open easy to route belt path, which makes using it correctly a lot easier, as do the built in lockoffs, which mean you never again have to use a locking clip. I can get it into 4 different vehicles in under 2 minutes. Because of the way the base is made, it fits in most cars. And, it is worth the money, b/c it lasts usually twice as long as most other car seats (all car seats expire 6 years after the date of manufacture) lasting a baby till they are 5-6 years old, where most at Walmart will only last till 2-4 years old. Rear faces to 33lbs, then forward to 65lbs. and top slots 17inches tall, lasts most kids to ages 5-6 years old. If you're really wanting these, Britax does 2 annual sales where you can get them for great prices: Sept/Oct and Jan/Feb. But check around, often you can find seats with discontinued covers at albeebaby or amazon for great prices.

The Evenflo Triumph Advance (not the original Triumph, make sure it says Advance) is a great seat. $150 version at Babies R Us has padding similar to Britax seats, top slots of 17", harnesses to 35lbs rear facing, and 50lbs forward facing. $120 Walmart version just has little less plush padding. Wide open belt path, easy to install, though it doesn't have built in lockoffs. The harness adjusts at the front of the car seat, you don't have to take the car seat out of the car just to raise/lower the straps. It has infinite harness adjustment so the harness always fits perfectly until its outgrown. No more tugging straps to tighten them either. You tighten and loosen the harness using knobs on the side of the seat. As a major bonus, it can be used in a recline position even in forward facing mode. Awesome for kids who still sleep in the car. I LOVE THIS SEAT! LOL My son, who is too big for every other car seat at Walmart has the same amount of room in this as the Britax Marathon. These were sale priced a few weeks ago at Walmart, don't know if they still are.

The Compass Tue Fit, also sold as The First Years True Fit, is a great choice, too. Here's a thread talking all about it: http://www.car-seat.org/showthread.php?t=37221&highlight=truefit Has 16.5 inch top harness slots, half inch shorter than the Britax Marathon and Evenflo Triumph Advance. Rear faces to 35lbs, forward faces to 65lbs, has built-in lockoffs, and you never have to rethread the harness to change harness height. The headrest is removable to fit better in smaller cars. $179 for the one cover Walmart offers it in, check Babies R Us and other stores for different covers at a little more expensive price.

If you have a Burlington Coat Factory near you, it would be worth making a visit to see if they have any Fisher Price Safe Voyage Deluxe car seats. The Fisher Price Safe Voyage Deluxe Convertible seat is great, it is made by Britax, without all the frills. It's the same shell as a Marathon, but for less than half the price. $130 at Albee Baby online with free shipping, or at their eBay name, babysurplus. Rear faces to 33lbs, forward to 55lbs. Easy to use, fits in most cars. A small word of warning about these seats: they are now officially not making them anymore, so the date of manufacture is getting older and older, with many being delivered that are 6+ months old already. Since car seats expire 6 years after the date of manufacture, this could make a difference to you, especially since its possible your child could fit in the seat for the next 5-6 years. But since they're marked down to $30, its an awesome deal!

It may take some juggling of seats for a little while to get really good prices on seats you actually want.

Answer
Yaaaa...you don't need 95% of that stuff...lol

Okay....so here is what I needed and used in the 1st week

Infant car seat
Stroller (I actually had 2...1 regular and 1 jogger..but the jogger was borrowed...I didn't need it, but was super glad I had it as it was easier to work with on hills and in the park etc)
Diaper bag
Diapers and wipes
Sleepers/onesies/socks/pants/shirts any other clothing you want/need
Crib and crib sheets
Monitor
Bassinette or playyard or cradle...whatever you want to use while baby is in your room beside your bed - i still don't own a playyard, we used a borrowed cradle and that was fine...my son is 16 months...sometimes I wish I had a playyard, but you definitely do not need one
Breast pump and storage bags
Bottles/nipples (if you are breastfeeding, you only need 1 or 2 bottles...I had 3 and never opened the 3rd bottle...I only used 1 and left 1 at my mom's house so that if she was watching him she could put frozen breastmilk in the bottle...hence the breast pump
They don't need toys for some time...they don't play with toys in the first week...but it is nice to have some car seat toys for entertainment
A play mat is very nice to have
Soothers (2 or 3)
Soother clip
Vitamin D drops
Bouncer/swing...I had both, but only needed 1..he would sleep in the swing, it was awesome!
Breast pads and cream (For sore nipples)
Burp cloths...but you can use old towels too
Infant Bathtub (very cheep...just a regular one, you don't need the ones with hoses/showers etc)
Wash cloths/towels..again you can use regular ones
Mild baby bath soap
Gripe Water (excellent for gas etc) non-alcoholic
Cornstarch (Not peneten etc for diaper rash) this works way better and is much milder on skin!

Hmmmm...that is about it!!

There are things that are nice to have...and you can totally decide and ask for those things too...but the must haves are above!

Hope this helps!

Tips for traveling with a 2 1/2 year old?

Aimee

I'm going to be flying with my son next month for the first time alone. Unfortunetly we have to make a connecting flight before arriving to our destination. I am planning on bringing a dvd player & some movies. I will call the airport to find out about what i can carry and what i can check. Can I check & carry items for two since we are paying for two tickets? Just wondering if I should bring the car seat on the plane, since I think he will sit better with it but then i have to lug it to the connecting flight. I thought about buying a "sit & stand stroller" so I can push him and any carry-on items. What have you done to make your travel less stressful? Thanks in advance!

Answer
The cardinal rule is this: travel light. The most important thing you can have is your two hands free.

When I fly with my (now 3 y.o.) son, my tactics depend on the flight we're taking AND how we're leaving the airport.

There are actually THREE parts to the flight: getting to the ticketing counter, getting through security and getting on the flights. You'll need to think through all three pieces in your journey.

If you've purchased two tickets, then yes, you have two luggage allowances. But careful - odds are that you can't handle getting all those bags around the airport on your own. And it's worth noting that no single bag can weigh over 50 pounds, regardless of how many seats you have.

Normally, I pack one rolling suitcase, put my son's carseat in a backpack carrier (they sell them for about $20 at Babies'R'Us) and load any other luggage on the stroller. This argues against using a Sit n Stroll - they have no cargo space underneath and the handlebars don't accommodate bags well, either.

I can just barely manage to walk from the car to the ticketing center pulling one bag, pushing the stroller, wearing the car seat and balancing the rest of the gear. I could not possibly get on an airport shuttle, so I allow extra time to walk from parking to the airport - and pay extra to be in a closer lot.

When my son was about 2 years and 3 months, I stopped using his car seat on the flight. He has a little more freedom of movement out of the car seat, which is great. I can even put the armrest up so he can snuggle up against me. You might triple check with your airline first, but I've always been told that as long as my son can sit on the plane in a lap belt, there's no requirement that he be in a car seat.

The ONLY time I keep the car seat with me now is if I'm leaving the airport in a family member's car and can't chance arriving before our luggage does.

So when I get to ticketing, I check my car seat and the rolling suitcase. This leaves me with my bag, my son's bag, the stroller, and, of course, my kid.

I sometimes fly with my laptop, but have never taken a laptop/DVD player when flying solo with my son. Between folding the stroller, getting our shoes off and all the other craziness required to get through security, I can't handle one more thing. We go low tech for entertainment ... and it works just as well. Especially if you have short flights, the amount of time you can use the DVD player probably isn't worth the weight of taking it and the effort of taking it out for security review.

Once we're through security, the rest is a breeze. We reassemble the stroller and ourselves and get ready to enjoy the flight. We usually buy food on the other side of security, and I usually buy my son a new toy. I find that I can get a good 30 minutes or so out of a new Matchbox car or similar item.

Now here's one thing to consider with your stroller - you'll have to gate check it. And you'll probably have to wait for your gate checked item to be unloaded. I'd still suggest taking the stroller, but if your connection is tight, you might mention it to the flight attendant. Some flight attendants will bend over backwards to give you a hand ... some are not terribly helpful. But it's always worth politely asking if they can do anything to expedite the process.

No airline wants a stranded mom & baby. :)

Lastly, take deep breaths and try to enjoy flying. It can be incredibly stressful, but it can also be fascinating for your child.

Good luck!

Things to do with a 14 month old baby in Hawaii?

We're traveling to Hawaii in April with our baby girl who will be 14 months. We're going to all the islands and I don't know what activities we'll really be able to do while there. We live in Miami so the beach isn't the main attraction for us. I purchased a baby carrier/backpack and an all terrain stroller to get around. Is there any hiking to do with a tough stroller? Carrying the baby for a month on our backs will not be easy. Any suggestions?

There are some easy hikes on Oahu that might be doable with a heavy duty stroller, boomer gal has one idea. Thereis also Koko Head (by Hawaii Kai) and Makiki Valley (which is wide enough as it is used every day heavily). Also Diamond Head is doable (not the rougher areas). There is a Children's Discovery Center nearer to downtown that would be fun and it features Hawaiana. There is also the Bishop Museum which might be interesting for a child.

My 6 month old is about to out grow his infant car seat and I'm not sure what we're going to do. We live in Singapore w no car and take taxis a lot so the infant seat snapping into the stroller is really convenient for us. I'm quite sad that he is outgrowing his infant car seat already! :( Anyway, I've found these two solutions:
http://www.parents.com/baby/gear/strollers/toddler-travel-system/
this one costs something ridiculous like $900 though :/
and this...
http://www.lillygold.com/
which I think we are going to get unless there are any other options out there that anyone knows of... any one?

Answer
there is this, its more for airport use, but you could still use it for what you want to.http://www.onestepahead.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=533888&cmSource=CrossSell&relatedProductId=534458

this is actually so you can carry the carseat on your back like a backpack: http://www.onestepahead.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=363756&cmSource=CrossSell&relatedProductId=533888

this is bulky but its worth looking at http://www.onestepahead.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=534069&cmSource=CrossSell&relatedProductId=363756

I would be all by myself with DS to travel from India to US by Feb 2013. He's is not used to sit in stroller. Am also in a dilemma about the stroller option since am worried if I have to carry him just in case, then stroller will be an added weight.
thanks!

Answer
Yes.

Honestly I love my Ergo. We have 2 so that my husband can wear one and I can wear one, back when we only had 2 kids my daughter liked riding backpack style on Daddy during hikes, while I carried my son. It goes to 40lbs, front carry, side carry, and backpack carry, so it worked very well. I just had my third, and I'm looking forward to carrying her.

I don't know how old your child is, but with my kids I had considered getting a double-stroller when my second was born because she was just a little over 2 and wouldn't walk far, she always rode in the stroller. Instead I tried the Ergo thinking it would be a bit cheaper just for 6 months or so. Instead I used the Ergo up until the week I found out I was pregnant. After about a year old my son wanted to ride in the stroller, so my daughter would walk and if she got tired I'd put her on my back and she could then ride home. It gave her the freedom to walk, but also be able to ride if she got tired, and she LOVED being able to talk right into my ear rather than me being behind her pushing the stroller which made for great nature walks.

Since the Ergo was lightweight, easy to pack, all fabric so it is compact... we took it EVERYWHERE. The stroller was alright, but the Ergo was simpler and easier to bring. If I had one child, I definitely would skip the stroller and just use an Ergo, especially on trips.

Something else to keep in mind, every time I took a stroller on an airplane it was broken. The Ergo, on the other hand, I packed in our carry-on and had right there as soon as I needed it.

How to lose my baby weight...?

I Love

I want to lose about 15-20 pounds. I weigh 130 and its mostly around my stomach and thighs. I want to lose weight but alot of things are stopping me;

Im breastfeeding so I cant necesarrily drink the weight loss shakes or take any kinds of pills

My parents have totally spoiled my baby so she wants to constantly be carried so I cant prepare anything good or healthy to eat so I end up picking on things or getting fast food.

Any suggestions?

Answer
Aww lordy another victim of western culture.

First advice. Get an ergonomic baby carrier such as a Beco Butterfly or an Ergo. Will cost about as much (or less) than a gym membership.

Shakes and pills are not weight loss tools, they are lazy poisons that rob your body of the nutrients you need.
\
no time to cook is BS. Sorry. My daughter is a VERY high need baby. She is held throughout about all of the meals I cook.

THIS is where the Beco or Ergo comes in, put baby in it, go about your cookin'. Secondly, put away your car keys. get a backpack, strap on your baby and WALK. Go to the bank, the grocery store (obviously not for the big shopping trips, but need some yams for supper, heck yes), any other errands you have, do them while wearing your baby. If you use an Ergonomic carrier properly it will be comfortable for both you and baby, while getting mama in shape.

Eat good healthy, unprocessed food and walk with your little one. Very very very easy, cheap and straight forward.

Im pregnant with baby number 3 and need a 3 seater pram as my daughter will be 3 and a half and my son 25 months when the new baby arrives. Just after some advice and whats good out there for a decent not to heavy 3 seater!!
Thanks

Answer
I have seen three seater prams before but they wouldn't be suitable for a newborn and 2 older toddlers. I would be going for a double stroller for the older kids if they still fit with their combined weight and put the baby in a carrier/harness/pouch on you. Or put the younger two in a double stroller/pram and get a walking harness/backpack for the oldest one to walk beside you without running off.

Phil and Teds prams make great double prams for babies and toddlers.
Or I found these.....

Need review for the baby items...?

truecolor

Hi all...I am in my third trimester. I am going to register baby items at Babies r us this weekend. This is my first baby and I am not sure which items and brands should I pick is safe and comfortble for my baby and pricewise reasonable too. Please give me the review about the baby items and items I do need must. Thank you all.
Thank you all ....for sparing your precious time and giving me lots of information in detail. I am new in this country and first time mom. So, not much idea how to choose the right baby items. But your patience and support helped me alot to select the right things for my baby too instead of wasting money. I am going to print out all those information and check out those items in the store. Once again thank you.

Answer
I highly suggest taking a (relatively) new mom with you to register. My sister (who had a 2 year old at the time) went with me to register and she was a HUGE Help.

Here are a few suggestions.

There has been a lot of press recently about car seats so I'm sure you can google which ones are safest. The one that sticks in my head (b/c it's the one we have) is Graco Snug and ride. I would recomend getting a Snap and Go base so that you can turn the carseat into a stoller.

The crib is totally a matter of taste. We chose the Da Vinci Roxanne because I liked that it could transition into a toddler bed and I liked that it had a drawer under it.

If you get a changing table, make sure it has safety straps (so that baby can't roll off it). We choose the Da Vinci Roxanne changing table dresser combo.

Actually.... I still have my list that has prices and brands that I wanted. I can paste it here -- sorry.... it's going to be long.

Furniture
â Crib â (Da Vinci Roxanne with drawer and conversion kit) $260
â Mattress for Crib â
â Fitted sheets for crib (jersey knit) â 2-3 $10 each

â Glider chair (Storkcraft sleigh glider â Cherry wood/beige cushion) $199
â Ottoman for glider (storkcraft) $70
â Hanging bookshelf (idea to hand shelf 12â to 18â below the ceiling around room to add lots of display and storage space)

Room Accessories
â Crib mobile (electric â the wind up ones stop to fast) Be careful what you pick out b/c all mobiles will not work with Da Vinci crib $40-$50
â Video Monitor (Summer infant Products: Day and Night Video handheld monitor) $170
â Baskets (for odds and ends â blankets, cloths, dirty laundry) $20+

Traveling With Baby
â Infant car seat with detachable base (MoTH recommends Graco Infant Snug-ride) $100 for seat $40 for x-tra base

Convertible car seats...?

double baby backpack carrier for twins

double baby backpack carrier for twins image

How do I help my daughter to become more independent so I can reclaim the joy of motherhood?

Ceylon

My ten month old daughter screams hysterically every time I leave the room. Which means I donât do ANYTHING all day but hold her, feed her, and play with her. My husband is a wonderful father and takes over with her when he gets home from work, which is when I start cooking and cleaning until it is time to go to bed. I have no time for me.

She will often play quietly beside me for a few minutes while Iâm on the computer or doing laundry, but if I am doing chores that require me to move from one room to the other, I have to carry her around in a sling, which is like being pregnant with a 30 pound baby and doubles the time it takes to do anything.

My husband and I waited to have a baby until if finished graduate school and we were financially stable enough for me to be a fulltime stay at home mom. I knew raising a child would be challenging, life-altering, and require sacrifice. As it turns out for me, being a stay at home mom has meant absolute selflessness.

The chronic back pain from holding her, picking her up and toting her around all day keeps me from getting good sleep. I havenât read one book since she was born; I rarely have time to read the news or exercise (outside of taking her on walks). I donât feel like I have anyone to talk to about thisâthe times Iâve tried to discuss it with my mother, she has made me feel guilty, the last time she snarled that I better get my tubes tied âASAPâ so I am not âburdened with the horror of another child.â
When I bring it up with my husband, he doesnât seem to understand and often suggests just letting her cry when I need to get something done. Each day, I put her in her crib or playpen for an hour while I shower, dress, and wolf down a microwave lunch. She spends this time screaming so hysterically that she can barely breath. Needless to say, every lunch and breakfast I have is incredibly stressful.

My baby is an intelligent, precious person, a delightful social butterfly who engages strangers in the park and at restaurants. I know this is not her fault. I LOVE her and feel grateful to have her and the financial stability to devote so much attention to her. Yet I donât want to become resentful. Nor do I want her to sense the fact that around 3 pm each day Iâm wishing I were doing anything else besides reading her a book and praying she takes a nap. My daily life feels like a bad dream where it takes me eight hours to load the dishwasher.

How do I help myself and my family?

Answer
My daughter is the same way! I have twins...and I totally understand that you need to vent a little!

Get a little backpack carrier and stick her in it. Wear her around and you can get stuff done and she will realize she would rather be down to play.

Another thing that has helped is babyproofing EVERYTHING. This way when you shower, you can bring her in the bathroom with her. Maybe give her a bottom drawer of her own so you can shower and she can play with toys in her drawer.

I also can now do laundry (in the garage) and the twins just roam around the house playing, because everything is totally safe. Seriously, it is going to help you a lot!

Whenever you can, let her "help" you. If you need to cook, stick her in front of a pot with a wooden spoon and toss some blocks or something in the pot. Ask her to help make the "soup" and ask her to stir the pot while you stir the real food.

When folding laundry, give her a pile of something colorful, like washcloths, to "fold" or sort or whatever.
