Actually, I need gift for both of them. I feel with women I can always get them pretty scarves or jewelry (you can't have too much!) but it's impossible to find gift for the male members of my family.
Why would my grandpas want ties? They are retired. And my neither my uncle or my dad wear them to work either.

Aimee

I'm going to be flying with my son next month for the first time alone. Unfortunetly we have to make a connecting flight before arriving to our destination. I am planning on bringing a dvd player & some movies. I will call the airport to find out about what i can carry and what i can check. Can I check & carry items for two since we are paying for two tickets? Just wondering if I should bring the car seat on the plane, since I think he will sit better with it but then i have to lug it to the connecting flight. I thought about buying a "sit & stand stroller" so I can push him and any carry-on items. What have you done to make your travel less stressful? Thanks in advance!

Answer
The cardinal rule is this: travel light. The most important thing you can have is your two hands free.

When I fly with my (now 3 y.o.) son, my tactics depend on the flight we're taking AND how we're leaving the airport.

There are actually THREE parts to the flight: getting to the ticketing counter, getting through security and getting on the flights. You'll need to think through all three pieces in your journey.

If you've purchased two tickets, then yes, you have two luggage allowances. But careful - odds are that you can't handle getting all those bags around the airport on your own. And it's worth noting that no single bag can weigh over 50 pounds, regardless of how many seats you have.

Normally, I pack one rolling suitcase, put my son's carseat in a backpack carrier (they sell them for about $20 at Babies'R'Us) and load any other luggage on the stroller. This argues against using a Sit n Stroll - they have no cargo space underneath and the handlebars don't accommodate bags well, either.

I can just barely manage to walk from the car to the ticketing center pulling one bag, pushing the stroller, wearing the car seat and balancing the rest of the gear. I could not possibly get on an airport shuttle, so I allow extra time to walk from parking to the airport - and pay extra to be in a closer lot.

When my son was about 2 years and 3 months, I stopped using his car seat on the flight. He has a little more freedom of movement out of the car seat, which is great. I can even put the armrest up so he can snuggle up against me. You might triple check with your airline first, but I've always been told that as long as my son can sit on the plane in a lap belt, there's no requirement that he be in a car seat.

The ONLY time I keep the car seat with me now is if I'm leaving the airport in a family member's car and can't chance arriving before our luggage does.

So when I get to ticketing, I check my car seat and the rolling suitcase. This leaves me with my bag, my son's bag, the stroller, and, of course, my kid.

I sometimes fly with my laptop, but have never taken a laptop/DVD player when flying solo with my son. Between folding the stroller, getting our shoes off and all the other craziness required to get through security, I can't handle one more thing. We go low tech for entertainment ... and it works just as well. Especially if you have short flights, the amount of time you can use the DVD player probably isn't worth the weight of taking it and the effort of taking it out for security review.

Once we're through security, the rest is a breeze. We reassemble the stroller and ourselves and get ready to enjoy the flight. We usually buy food on the other side of security, and I usually buy my son a new toy. I find that I can get a good 30 minutes or so out of a new Matchbox car or similar item.

Now here's one thing to consider with your stroller - you'll have to gate check it. And you'll probably have to wait for your gate checked item to be unloaded. I'd still suggest taking the stroller, but if your connection is tight, you might mention it to the flight attendant. Some flight attendants will bend over backwards to give you a hand ... some are not terribly helpful. But it's always worth politely asking if they can do anything to expedite the process.

No airline wants a stranded mom & baby. :)

Lastly, take deep breaths and try to enjoy flying. It can be incredibly stressful, but it can also be fascinating for your child.

Good luck!

What's on your Christmas list for your toddler girl?

That one

My daughter will be almost 17 months on Christmas. I want to buy her a few big gifts instead of a lot of little ones. I was thinking the Fisher-Price "My first doll house" and also the accessories that go with it. I also want to get her a doll, since she only has one. I kind of feel like I want to go crazy and spoil her but I am trying to keep myself from doing this because I'm trying not to live above my means. But...it's Christmas! lol I go back and forth...

Do you go overboard with the gifts on Christmas? It seems like so much fun to do! What are you getting your toddler girl? Especially, what is the big present you are getting her?

Answer
It's funny, up until recently, I haven't had any ideas on what to get my now 18-month-old daughter as we have "everything" from my three-year-old son. But, this Christmas, I've got loads of ideas and somehow have to whittle them down. lol.

The FP My First Dollhouse is definitely on the list. The reviews are great and she loves Little People stuff so the dollhouse seems like a great way to introduce a dollhouse and encourage more imaginative play.

A definite gift will be Fisher Price's Little Mommy set -- a doll, stroller, bassinet and chair/carrier thing. Costco has a version of it for a great price and my daughter loves playing with dolls, pretending to feed them, giving hugs and kisses etc. And, all kids, boy or girl, well at least the ones I know, adore pushing around stollers.

A tricycle. We're doing the Radio Flyer lights and sounds one as we already have a push-bar one from my son and I got a great deal on it. Although she isn't able to pedal yet so maybe this one should wait in my closet until her 2nd birthday. Hmmmm... But, if your daughter doesn't have a push bar one, that would be a good idea. One with a belt is best (we improvise with a person's belt when she rides her brother's, which doesn't have a seat belt, but she still has tons of fun on it). Of course, our winters are fairly mild and some of the days can still have time outside playing. If you have harsh winters, a tricycle can wait until a 2nd birthday too. Although, I will say, my son learned to pedal during the winter, using it indoors instead of out. Outside was too scary for him to learn to pedal. :)

Both my children are getting Step 2's Up & Down Roller Coaster as a joint gift. My daughter is a thrill seeker and this will probably be her favorite toy. We have a large basement and this will also come in handy for all those afternoons stuck indoors due to cold weather. Again, it gets great reviews and almost all of the people who purchase it say they are 100% glad they did. Before I chose this though, I was debating between it and one of the ride-on electric trains, like the Thomas one or Peg Perego Santa Fe ones. I still think that would be a great gift for a 17/18 month old, but I ended up choosing the roller coaster because I think they'll be able to get more use out of it for longer.

In the same sort of idea, indoor "outside play" for the winter, I'm debating the Little Tikes or Step 2 large slide. We go to an indoor play session at our community center and the slide is a HUGE hit with my kids, especially my 18 month old, she'll just climb and slide for an hour straight. Of course, it's pricey, so with the roller coaster, I don't know if this will happen, but I know she would love it if we do get it.

Other things, a rolling toddler-sized backpack. My daughter ADORES her brother's preschool backpack and will spend hours filling it up, emptying it out and pulling it all over the house. But, it has to have the wheels, like a suitcase, as that's the biggest draw. She has other bags without wheels and doesn't play with them at all. Grandma already got one for her. :)

I know it may seem "gender-wrong," especially for first children who are girls and who don't seem to be as into stereotypically boy toys, but here are some ideas of my son's toys that my daughter plays with every day. She loves his wooden train set and will play with it every day. Who knows, she may be just mimicing her brother, but she really seems to like it. Another one is a matchbox car racetrack thing that we have. Probably not totally age-appropriate, but she loves sending cars or trains or, well anything, sliding down the tracks. A Little Tikes kitchen with plastic food stuff. She pretends to wash her hands and eat the food, drink from the cups etc. She also has a lot of fun just taking all the food and utensils out of their storage container and putting them in the stove and back again. Oh, the shopping cart for the same purpose is on our list, although, since we're getting the stroller I probably won't get the cart as well. But, it does seem to be a big hit with young toddlers.

Isn't it fun shopping for your kids?? :)

Things to do with a 14 month old baby in Hawaii?

best baby backpack
on Best Baby Carrier Backpack Reviews 2013
best baby backpack image

Sandy C

We're traveling to Hawaii in April with our baby girl who will be 14 months. We're going to all the islands and I don't know what activities we'll really be able to do while there. We live in Miami so the beach isn't the main attraction for us. I purchased a baby carrier/backpack and an all terrain stroller to get around. Is there any hiking to do with a tough stroller? Carrying the baby for a month on our backs will not be easy. Any suggestions?

Answer
There are some easy hikes on Oahu that might be doable with a heavy duty stroller, boomer gal has one idea. Thereis also Koko Head (by Hawaii Kai) and Makiki Valley (which is wide enough as it is used every day heavily). Also Diamond Head is doable (not the rougher areas). There is a Children's Discovery Center nearer to downtown that would be fun and it features Hawaiana. There is also the Bishop Museum which might be interesting for a child.

Any opinions about baby backpacks and stroller systems?

army_siste

I don't have a baby yet but I might in the future. My question is about baby backpacks and strollers. Snuggli is one backpack I have seen. How useful are they? I saw one that said it could be used in the front for a small baby and on the back for a larger one up to 27 pounds. Are they comfortable and easy to get on and off? My concern was would my back start hurting after awhile? I have also seen some that have a metal frame that goes on the back? It looks kind of like the old hiking backpacks. Has anyone used that type? Is the soft Snuggli type better than the metal frame type?
On to strollers. I see alot of the stroller systems that come with the carseat carriers. Does anyone have an opinion whether they think the type that holds a carseat is better than just a regular stroller? I can see the benefits of both types. I would be a busy mom who be going on lots of walks and would also need to have one that would fold up nicely for the trunk of the car.Any other must haves for a baby?

Answer
Baby backpacks: I liked them okay. My husband loved ours. He would carry our daughter around all the time. They get in the way if you're trying to do something (and you really can't bend over) but they're nice for walking around and shopping if you don't want a stroller.
Stroller: Get one with a car seat carrier. They are so nice. You have to have a car seat anyway so why not get one that can snap onto your stroller. Its good for an infant because you know their head is protected in the carseat and you can see them at all times because you put the carseat on facing you in the stroller. Also, when your child is too big for the car seat, you can just use the stroller as a regular stroller. We have a 17 month old and have both kinds. Both fit into our trunk nicely. Our Jeep stroller (which is for older kids kind of a more expensive umbrella stroller) is great for going to the store. Her other stroller is nice if he needs a nap because she can lay down in it. Other things to have are a bouncy seat, a swing (our daughter absolutely loved hers), and for hen s/he can walk a stationary set so s/he can stand and play at the same time. We also liked our jumparoo but some people say they're bad for kids' legs. There are many good things for a baby, but it's all about what's good for you and your baby.

Medela PIS backpack vs. shoulder bag?

Bayleigh78

These two models appear to be the same despite the bag. Looking for opinions on shoulder bag vs. the backpack. I'm going to return to work and will be using it a lot while there.

Answer
I just think it depends on which style you prefer. Would you carry the backpack on your back? Or just want to sling the bag over your shoulder? I have also been looking at the pumps for when I have this baby in August. I think I will be going with the shoulder bag, just because that is the style I prefer.

Sling vs. Carrier, the sling just isn't working out, help?

Hillbilly

I have a sling and a carrier (kinda like a back pack that goes in front). I tried to put my baby in the sling because I left the carrier in the car. I had it all the way tightened but she just drooped all the way down to my knees almost. It was very uncomfortable and heavy on my back. Is it because my baby is too big for a sling now, or maybe because I'm just so short (5'even)? Does anyone else use a carrier vs. a sling? All I see people on here talk about are slings.

Answer
I hated my sling, and my front carrier, and so did my daughter. The moment she could sit with support I started using a proper child-carrying backpack (it was a Macpac, designed for carrying toddlers up mountains). Best thing I ever bought. I almost never even used a pushchair.

If that photo in your avatar is the baby you are talking about, she'd be fine in that style of backpack. She needs full head and neck control, but not to be able to sit alone.

I'm 5'2, btw.

How exactly can I tone up without any dumbells? I do have a stretch cord-?

Hello,

I am 23. I just had my second child 5 months ago and have already lost a pretty nice chunk of weight. It's time to tone it up!

5'3 140 lbs ----> target weight: 125 lbs

I'm aiming for an all around workout, but specifically looking for these areas:

â¢I need to know what exercises will get rid of my arm flab, tighten and tone.
â¢I would like to know the best exercises for nice, firm (butt)cheeks.
â¢Exercises to tighten and tone my stomach

I've been avoiding trying to lose anymore weight. Because I'm afraid if I do, I'm going to have loose skin. So it's really time to gear it up. If you could help me map out a weekly challenge that would be awesome. Thank you ahead for sharing your thoughts and comments.

Answer
Use your body for resistance. I just saw a water bottle workout in a woman's magazine. Online, there is a sand in a backpack workout. you make the backpack with sand yourself. For butt, while on hands and knees, kick back alternate legs (donkey kicks). Abs, hang from parallel bar at park while out with baby, bring up legs in front of you. Arms, hold water bottles, bend arms towards the back and straighten in back parallel to floor. Do sets of 15 each, three sets. Do push ups, you know, exercises from grade school and middle school. Walk with baby daily. Get Denise Austin's book from the library to learn numerous exercises to do at home throughout the day.

What should I wear to an interview for a waitressing position?

MMB

I have to ride my bike there and I don't know what to wear. It would be hard to ride a bike in dress clothes not to mention the fact I will be sweaty by the time I get there. Any suggestions? There is no where I can change.

Answer
Wear the smallest bike clothes you can. Like a tank top, sports bra, and spandex shorts.

Carry a backpack and have in it a sun dress or a elastic waist skirt and nice shirt. Take off the tank and throw the real clothes on over your sports bra and spandex. You can take off the spandex if they are going to show. Bring some nice ballerina flats to throw on in place of your bike shoes.

Bring a baby wipe and wipe down if you are sweaty. Be sure to arrive at least 30 minutes before the interview to cool down, wipe off, and change. If the restaurant is by a mall or large retailer (like target), you can lock your bike up there, go inside to change and cooldown, and then walk over to the restaurant.

I am about to have my second baby and I will have two kids under the age of two so I'm thinking I will need a baby sling or something. With my first son I used the snugli carrier, it was okay but I would prefer something else that is more comfortable. I've been looking at those baby slings that look like little shells that rest on the side of your hip, but I have gotten mixed reviews on that. Some women say it's great to have, some say they are terribly uncomfortable. I've also seen some type of wraps lately and have been wondering about those. Can anyone recomend any of these through experience? Thanks

Answer
I have a "hotsling", a "new native carrier", a "baby bjyorn" and the "infantino sling rider"... here's what i have to say about them

the hotsling... i like the best. my son is 5 months old and i use it to carry him on my hip. when he was smaller (he's 22 lbs now) i used the other carries, and was able to nurse him while chasing after (well not running, but able to move while nursing) a 2 and 3 year old.

the new native carrier... mine never fit right, when he was little, but i can still use it for the hip carry. i like the strechyness of the hotsling better.

baby bjoirn... i assume is similar to your snugli but it hurts my back too much except for when he was like 10 lbs. my son got too heavy to ever really wear facing forwards comfortably, but i could see it being great.

infantino sling rider... worked well for when he was under 18 lbs and sleeping, he never liked it awake

the type of carrier, i have looked into (and the only one i registered for at my shower) was a mei tai carrier... which i think i would have like best, and still might pick it up, if i don't find a good framed backpack reasonably.

I am looking for a good baby carrier for my 1-month-old son. I bought an over-the-shoulder-baby-holder brand sling for him. It claimed to be the best sling on the market but I felt like he was going to fall out of it and I ended up having to use my hands to hold him steady which completely defeats the purpose of a baby carrier which is to be HANDS FREE. Maybe I put him in the sling incorrectly???
Now I'm looking for a new baby carrier and I was wondering if you moms out there can help me decide among all of the options in baby carriers by giving me your reviews and letting me know what worked for you:) I'd really appreciate the help! I'm willing to spend up to $30, I've been looking at the used carriers on Ebay...

Answer
I have three different kinds of carriers and i really like all of them for different reasons. I have a woven cotten wrap type carrier like a moby style but not since it was homemade that was awesome when they were little and needed alot of support. I also have a tube sling(hotsling type thing) which i love with my toddlers when we are running around and i just want something quick to put her in to give me free hands its good for older ones with more head/neck support. And lastly i have a Mei Tai style carrier again homemade that i like for longer outings...Its comfy and easy to tie and take and put baby into and out of and i can wear it for hours and hubbie will even wear it he says its like wearing a backpack so he likes it. If You can sew at all you make any kind you want too really for alot less than they cost in store or try to find some on a really good sale.....But those are the three i like...:)

Most useful and well liked Baby Toys and Equiptment?

on Twin Baby Carrier | eBay

Any favorite toys or equiptment(ie strollers, highchairs etc)
Any that you found especially useful, convenient,
or that baby thought was fun.
Any recommendations?
No I am NOT pregnant.
Compiling a list for baby shower gifts, and thought who knows better than people who are already Parents, what could be most useful.

Answer
-I loved the Snugli carrier- we also used a sling.
-nursing clothes by Motherwear (check ebay for deals) are great for nursing in public if you plan to. Lansinoh breast pads were the best.
-I can say with confidence that I will never buy a highchair again- I would save the money and get the $14 Walmart one that straps to a chair- it's just as good!
-For a stroller, definitely pick one that you can open and close with one hand. Anything else is too much of a pain- especially if you fly.
-Happy Baby manual food grinder- you can take it anywhere and just grind up your healthy family dinner for baby.
-My son's fave toy was the Ball Blaster, the balls swirl down and come out the bottom.
-car seat- definitely the Britax Roundabout- it's a little more pricey but the easiest one I have ever used. For an infant seat I liked the Stay In View by Fisher Price but they stopped making it and it would be hard to find new now. (I had a hard time 3 yrs ago w. my youngest!) I liked the carry strap.
-I have a First Years vinyl changing pad that has pockets for a couple diapers and travel wipes- it was great.
-I would suggest a backpack instead of a diaper bag, it's just so much easier! If you don't bottle feed, they really don't need much space- I have thrown the changer (above) and a couple toys into my purse and been fine.

My ultimate advice- babies need far less crap than you think. With each child my list of "things needed for baby" just gets smaller and smaller.

Congrats!

Hi. Please, I going on a trip & I am looking for a good backpack/diaper bag which can fit essentials & a little extra (mommy's cell phone, wallet, etc). Any suggestions? I've heard Baby Sherpa is good? Any other brands? Thanks in advance.

Answer
I always like using children's backpacks, especially since then I could have one for each of my kids that they liked or picked out. Especially with my daughter-- that way she wouldn't complain that it wasn't cute. Also, if you get a backpack and don't beat it up, oyu can use it when they are kindergarten, first grade, while they still don't need something big. This article has 3 really good options: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/5652566/the_top_3_backpacks_for_girls_in_elementary.html?cat=25

I also like all of the backpacks by Wildkin. You can find Wildkin bags and all other kinds at eBags.com-- I love this website. They always have discounts and they carry good brand like Northface. Also, Land's End has great bags and you can get things monogramed.

Can you all recommend a good diaper bag for me?

Sweet Sout

I'm due in march and I have a 1 year old right now so I'll need a diaper bag that functions for 2 babies at once. Any good suggestions?? Links are greatly appreciated!!!!! :-)
Oh yeah, and both are boys so nothing too girlie! :)

Answer
I recommend a Lands End bag. Whether you choose a little Tripper, Do-it-all or backpack it will be reasonably priced and high quality. Right now they have a color of Do-it-all on sale for 24.50 and it's easy to find free shipping codes online. I have been ordering Lands End for years and am consistently impressed with their quality. The best part is, especially if you pick up that $25 one, it costs the same as a nice one from Wal-Mart or Target, has way more features and is guaranteed.

The guarantee means that If the zipper breaks, if the fabric tears, or the seam rips (for any reason) you can tell Lands End customer service and they will send you a new one! This means no worrying about wearing it out or slinging it around everywhere. If you wear it out, they'll replace it at no cost to you!

It's rugged, has a super 30 inches long, cushy changing pad, lots of pockets and pouches, and can be monogrammed for only $5 extra. How could you go wrong?

Answer
"A wonderful bird is a pelican,
His bill will hold more than his belican."

Here's a good one for you--think of the pelican's beak, which stretches to whatever size is needed as it scoops up water and fish.

So...if you're packing to go on a trip, how about a soft rubbery suitcase that expands to fit the stuff you want to take--or the souvenirs you want to bring back!

Or a backpack--on days when homework is light, it's fairly small but when you've got tons of it, the backpack stretches to hold all your extra books.

Or shopping bags that stretch.

Or strollers and baby carriers that stretch to accommodate twins, but shrink when the next kid's a loner.

You could take the comparison a step further: pelican beaks expand as they take a gulf of water and fish, and then they act as a strainer, so the water drains out and the fish remain.

How about a stretchy colander or strainer to use in the kitchen--it stretches out pretty large as you strain pasta for 8, but stays small if you're draining a small amount.

Hope that works for you!

What do you take with you to get yourself cleaned up and keep up with your good hygiene?
If you could give suggestions to a company to design a hygiene kit for the outdoors, what would you want in a kit, besides the obvious lightweight and compact?

Answer
First, you wouldn't market the same kit to backpackers and campers. The backpacker is interested in saving weight and space and a serious backpacker wouldn't buy the kit, they'd make their own, that is, unless you created some new products like sawed-off tooth brushes, toothpaste in a gel tablet, very lightweight squeeze containers with just enough contents for a week or smaller size for a weekend (like larger, resealable ketchup packets. "Remember, if you cant use it for more than one purpose, leave it at home." And it doesn't matter if it's disposable. The backpacker still has to cate it out. The camper is interested in convenience, little or no clean up, somewhat compact and lower weight than household items.

Otherwise, these are some items to consider.
Mini toothbrush w/cover, sample/travel size Tom's (natural) toothpaste, tech towel, Dr. Bronner's Pure Castile Soap (for shampoo, body soap, dish soap, toothpaste, mouthwash...), Hand Sanitizer, "baby" wipes, bio TP, resealable baggies, small trash bags, weather proof card with bio-friendly instructions (where to create latrine, where not to wash dishes, how to create potable water, strike camp/clean up checklist, etc), woman's urinal (for women's specific kit), tiny stainless mirror (doubles as signal mirror), containers kit, and a list of other items with part numbers to add to or refill the kit including a mini daily med/pill dispenser.

That should do it, though I bet there are 100 other things you could include that would be very useful.

High School Girls; What do you keep in your backpacks?

C_tomlin

I am trying to figure out everything that should go in my backpack because I am reorganizing and getting a new one. So what are your necessities? Organization tips? Extra things you have?

Answer
I usually just carry a few things in my bookbag because I don't like having a lot of weight on my back during the day at school. Luckily this is my last year! But what I do usually keep in my bookbag is: a few folders, pencil pouch (with pens, pencils, erasers, etc), my calculators, and an agenda. I usually go to my locker quite a lot to change my books and binders and just carry those in my hands while walking to class.

Some organization tips: 1) If you have a pocket at the back of your bookbag (I have a north face and at the area towards your back I have a pocket) you can put your folders, paper, etc. there so it doesn't move around or have important papers get crumpled up in your bag if they happen to fall out. 2) Speaking of important papers, have a specific folder that you keep your homework, forms, or anything important in so you know where to find it when you need it. 3) Keep your smaller things (like pencils and calculators) in a smaller zipper portion of your bookbag so it doesn't mix with the larger things and it will be easier to find.

I assume you aren't going to be carrying a purse? If you want to keep some important things with you that you might need or will need throughout the day I would suggest: chapstick, feminine products (tampons, pads, baby wipes), a mirror, hand sanitizer, lotion, gum, tissues, mints, and if you want (I don't) but you can carry a small makeup bag around to hold small makeup products if you want to touch up your makeup sometime during the day. You can keep all these things in a small bag, makeup bag, or clutch-like bag and stick it in a small zipper part of your bookbag. Hope I helped!

I am going to be using it for school and I want it to last a while! What can I uses to protect it, I think it is 100% cotton, and it has like leather straps. Then when its dry apply a little baby oil to the leather

What is a typical supply list for Kindergarten?

Q. We just got our "supply list" for Kindergarten for my daughter, but it is not complete, it's just a general list and then we are to "see her teacher" for her individual supply list.
The trouble is they don't post the class rosters until the evening of August 23. She starts school on August 27. Not only does that give us almost no time to purchase school supplies (I work full time), but it also means we will miss all the decent sales!
The general list looks like this:

- Bookbag (no backpacks)
- 1 pair of tennis shoes
- 1 gym t-shirt
- 2 large pink erasers
- 1 package of dry erase markers
- 1 three ring binder (1.5")
- 6 large glue sticks
- Computer headphones
- 3 boxes of Kleenex brand tissues
- 2 containers of baby wipes
- 1 box of quart size Ziplock brand bags
- 1 package of Post-It-Notes (must be Post-It brand)

What else should I pick up? Crayons? Scissors? What is usually on those lists?

Answer
I wouldn't worry too much about it. Your daughter isn't going to need crayons or scissors for the first day of school. There will still be plenty of time for sales after school starts. Chances are that things like crayons and scissors will be provided if she needs them. Just get the stuff on the general list, and worry about the other stuff later. You might want to pick up a pack of pencils for her and some of the basics like that but you should be fine for the first day just sending her with the items on that list.

Has anyone done Semester at Sea?

baby backpack india image

ballaerina

Is it competitive? Would you recommend it? Do you have any advice for an applicant?

Answer
SAS is a FABULOUS PROGRAM!! You will not regret the decision to go - I PROMISE!

Here's some advice I've given others in the past:

as far as money is concerned - it's different for everyone. i brought a lot in the way of cash for trip expenditures. that is, i bought almost nothing in countries to take back with me (which was a damn good thing, too, because i would have just lost everything in katrina, anyway). my roommate, on the other hand, bought a huge backpack and filled it with trinkets and gifts for people. she only brought about a grand for this, as she did most of her trips with SAS. it totally depends on the type of person you are.

make sure you go through that itinery book thouroughly - my recommendation would be to do a good mix of trips. i personally picked about two big ones to go on with the group - i travelled in china with sas (i did tsingua university and the great wall with a short stint in shanghai for the new year) and i travelled kenya with the group (i did a 4 day safari and a day at the baby elephant orphange). for the rest of my sas adventures, i pretty much just wing'ed em. i hadn't had much travelling experience in the past, so i thought this was a great way to learn. haha.

this goes back to the applying early thing - the only way to secure your spot on sas trips is to apply early. point blank - even then, it's not a guarantee. don't stress out over this - no matter what you pick, you'll have an amazing experience!

as far as other advice is concerned:

-go knowing no one. you'll meet tons of people and have a blast. if you know someone, you're likely to shut the two of you out from the rest of the ship.
-don't invest in a satellite phone - it's just not worth it. they're expensive, and chances are, someone else will let you use theirs for a minimal fee if god-forbid there was a crisis (i.e. during our "storm incident" a few kids had em and just let us call our parents to let them know we were okay).
-bring USD! despite what you may think, most of these places think cashiers checks or travellers checks are worthless. i made this mistake. don't do it. there is a safe in your cabin where you can lock up any valuables.
-buy a "travellers belt" and use it! it looks stupid underneath your clothes, but it's a great way to ensure you don't get pick-pocketed (and as americans, that happens a lot).
-bring lots of singles because its a great way to haggle!! also, you can exchange currency one you get to a port - they offer this service right on the ship. easy. and don't sweat the exchange rates because they'll always be terrible. haha. in the long run, you'll only lose a few us dollars by doing it the day of. the onlyonly way you'll wind up risking more is if you exchange more than you need in each county (because the exchange back will always be less - just as a rule of thumb).
-don't pack more than you can carry. everyone else will have the same amount of crap and no one is going to help you because they have their own load to worry about.
-it's not a fashion show. being a girl, this was a hard lesson to learn. i brought a few "cute going-out outfits" and wound up exchanging with three or four other girls when we had adventures on the town. on this note, label your clothing! it will probably, at some point, get lost in the laundry.
-bring bathingsuits. lots of them. you're surrounded by water and hell, there's a pool.
-if you have a laptop, bring it, but be careful. while it is a small community with tons of trust, laptops, as with other expensive electronics (ie ipods), tend to disappear. you can rent one on the ship (which is what i had to do after my television fell on mine during the 'wave') for a minimal fee - the rentals are pretty crappy.
-use your ship internet time wisely. if you go to india, don't waste any of your shipboard internet minutes because internet cafes in india are like a penny a minute! by that same logic, use your free minutes in south africa where internet cafes are a dollar a minute. once you expend your shipboard internet minutes, using the on board computers get expensive.
-get your shots in advance. i applied late like i mentioned above. i had to get al 3490825875467862134 vaccines in two weeks before i left. NOT FUN! also, beware of your malaria medication. mine made me sick. turns out, i was allergic. i stopped taking mine and i was fine. i don't reccommend this, though. make sure that your body can handle all the meds and such.
-don't forget that this is school! the grades you earn will stay on your permanent transcript. excuses like "but i lost my paper to a fire-breathing chinese dragon" will only get you so far. the professors aboard are great ones and they are learning with you. open your mind and expand. you will learn more out of the classroom than in - they know this - but this is still no excuse to not take classes seriously.
-here's some advice you may not want your parents to read: don't go with a significat other. now i don't know whether you are dating someone or not. i wasn't when i went. my roommate was. needless to say, she broke it off with her long-term beau. if you ask almost anyone that has gone, it is just not wise to go attached. you are experiencing things with people that only they will understand. and truth be told, after two months of seeing the same people day in and day out, they start to look good, haha. so avert relationship disaster. and if it's meant to be, your sigother will be waiting for you when you get off that ship and you will be waiting for them as well. but let it be known that you will be a changed woman after this trip and your relationship may never be the same (plus, they'll get totally sick of you yapping: sas this...sas that..sas..sas..sas)!!
-try everything once. i did stuff i never thought i would do: cage diving with great whites, jumping from a 75 foot cliff into a freezing pool of water, horseback riding through the winelands, riding in a rickshaw... i even ate things that got me so sick i thought i wouldn't see another day. no matter the outcome, i'll probably never have the chance to do these things again and i relished even in the not-so-pleasant times.
-prepare to see the worst. imagine the most horrible thing you have seen in your life thus far. you'll see worse. trust me. humanity can be cruel. learn from it and carry it with you.
-HAVE FUN! this is unavoidable but take time to write in journals, snap photos, and reflect on what you are doing. less than 1% of the world's population circumsail the world and you are one of them! it's awesome. it's better than awesome.
-keep in touch! i want e-mails, updates, pictures, whatever! sas was the best time of my life, and i promise it will be yours, too.

hope this was of some help! if you have more questions, please don't hesitate to ask! lots of luck,

Matching tattoos for the kids? HELP! Idears?

So youâll never guess where I am right now........Dharamsala! Esperanza put aside here prejudices about tattooâs on women and we took up Aleah on her offer to go backpacking with them there!!! âThemâ is Aleah and Namir (the Israeli couple) and their daughter Netanya, and of course we are Esperanza, Ryan, and myself. Itâs so AMAZING. Weâve already done TONS of stuff...I just got time to come to an Internet Cafe (there are tons of them, due to all the hippieâs around hoping to catch a glimpse of the âDollyâ Lama).

Anyway, we all have really bonded, and last night at dinner we came up with an AMAZING idea. Of course, we made A + N aware of our quest to get Ryan his tattoo. Then they reminded us of an ancient custom of India. Sometimes if two couples (or two mothers) struck up a really good friendship, and if one had a boy and the other a girl (or was pregnant with same), they would vow to cement the alliance between their families by betrothing the children to one another. (For you guys that donât know, âbetrothâ means âengageâ.) Then when they got older, the kids would marry.

This got us thinking about Ryan and Netanya....and tattoos. Why not....get them matching tattooâs? It would be meaningful on so many levels. It would commemorate the fateful meeting between our two families, as well as strengthening our bond. Also, it would be a beautiful way of betrothing Ryan and Netanya.

Our only problem now is coming up with the PERFECT design. We were thinking some kind of six-pointed star with all of out names and what they mean....maybe even the symbols for each of our names at each point. Shareef means âhonor(able)â (Arabic), Esperanza means âhopeâ (Mexican), Aleah means âimmigrant to new homeâ (Jewish), Namir means âleopardâ (Israeli), Netanyu means âGift of Godâ (Hebrew), and Ryan means âKinglyâ (Irish). We could also have the names written in each of their scripts (Arabic, Mexican, Jewish, Israeli, Hebrew, and Irish). However, we still need to work in on Ryanâs the original idea of his birth date and âMIRACLEâ in Arabic. Plus we donât want it to get too big because theyâre just babies (6 + 7 months).

Any ideas would be AMAZING.
OK you guys have no right to judge us if you don't know the whole story...and I didn't ask for your opinions except on the DESIGN so...ideas? What is a symbol of "hope" and "immigrant"?
I don't have any tattoo's but Aleah has lots (like I explained last time) and she said they didn't hurt very badly....kind of like a cat scratch or a sunburn....she even fell asleep during one of them LOL

Answer
Hello again Shareef! I hope that you are all having a great time seeing the mighty greatness that is the dolly lama!!! lolz.
a couple of thing...

1. DO NOT listen to these people that say not to tattoo a baby! I mean, we, in America, get babies ears pierced, get the little boys circumsized, and we even cut their umbilical cords! Talk about pain! However, I am under the impression that they babies can't remember all of these things, so now is the best time to get the tattoos done! I mean, from what I hear, tattoos are pretty PaInFuL and I wouldn't want to remember it unless I had to! They will thank you for it in the long run, I promise!!!

2. Congrats on "betrothing" little Ryan and Netanya! I am sure they will enjoy years of happiness together!

3. As for design... PLEASE don't get a nautical star! Those are SO played out! What you chiefly need to do, is incorporate something that has INTENSE meaning to all of you.... like maybe .... well, I think that butterflys would be best! What you can do for little Netanya, is get a string of butterflies on her lower back! That is a totally original place for a tattoo, plus, it will be cute because it won't show unless she wears lowrise diapers! Then everyone will get a little *peek*... lolZ!! Okay, so there will be a total of 5 butterflies... on the right side, you can have two butterflies, one with her mom's name in some pretty language, like sanscript or japanese, and the other with her dad's name in the same language! Make each butterfly the color of the parent's eyes to add deeper meaning. Also, on the left side of her lower back, you should put you and Ranza's names in chinese or whatever... you should see how the characters look first to see which language looks better. Once again, make the eye color of the parent the color of their corresponding butterfly! Then, for the centerpiece! You will have one butterfly that will symbolize the JOINING of the two families! The butterfly will be half Ryan's eye color and half Netanyu's eye color! The, to symbolize Ryan, you should have the butterfly wearing a crown and to add Netanyu's "Gift of God" added in, you could have the crowned butterfly have a halo on top of it's crown! Underneath the butterfly, you can have "Miracle" written and both babies birthdates!
For little Ryan, make the design the same, except instead of butterflies, make his flames or a tribal. Those are both SUPER manly designs! just make sure you still carry the colors of the eyes, etc, into the design! Also, make sure to leave room where they can tattoo their wedding date someday!

All in all, I think that my design will be much more symbolic than a star, and not as complicated.

i don't like to wear the tudung...because ALL my friends didn't wear it...besides, i can't wear baby tees and mini skirts anymore when i go out...it all began when i hit puberty...i feel miserable now...i'm 14, hit puberty on 11....it's been 3 years...i feel like want to cry now...please help...i'm too young...beside, i'll promise that i'll wear it when i'm married...but if i don't wear the tudung now, my parents and sisters will scold me...please help...
it's a religion thingy where women must not show their hair after they had gotten puberty...

Answer
Option one: respect your family's wishes and buy the coolest scarves you can find. There realy are some great ones out there, I know. Match your outfits. Buy some extras to share with your friends--they can tie 'em on their backpacks or around their necks or wear them like a turban. Start a trend. Rock the tudung like it's... like it's whatever fourteen year olds all wish they wearing these days. Prada backpacks?

Option two: telll them no. Be firm, firm, firm. Tell them no. Tell them you respect their wishes and your religion, but you are not ready. A hard road, but, at your age, your perrogative.

Option three: compromise. Can you cover your hair in a less conspicuous way? Maybe a smaller scarf or wear your hair tied up? Maybe something vintage, like a snood. A snood, btw, is a crocheted hairnet thing women wore over the backs of their long hair in the 1930s and 40s. Very glamorous.

Good luck.

I need some serious room help!?

Emma

My room is a fashion DON'T EVEN GO THERE. It's light purple, has pretty stencils on top that are kinda nice. But then I have a BIG vanity that's too big for my room, a paisley chair that doesn't have any purple in it, a book shelf with two shelves and picture books on it (I tried to get rid of them but my mom said I had to keep them there because there's no space for them anywhere else), another small mirror that's hideous, a closet that has 4 shelves (two of them consisting of all my mom's craft stuff squished together, and two of them for all my clothes, a very small space for my dresses, coats, and sweat shirts, a single bed that I don't even fit in, an old vintage painting that was cool but is now just out of place, a violn, two backpacks, two more shelves filled with random junk, and a newspaper sprawled out on the floor. And to top it all off, it's about a 15 by 10 foot room including the closet that takes up 10 feet of it. It's WAY smaller then it sounds. It's more like a janitor's closet.

the biggest problems are that the walls are a baby color, my bed is too small, and i don't have room for my stuff. No, I can't get a better room right now. They're all taken. I was thinking, if I repaint the walls, get rid of the vanity, put shelves on the walls for my books and some of my junk, and kick my mom out of my closet, maybe it'd be better... HELP!!!!!!!!!

Answer
I'm sorry that you are having this problem! :( but i hope this helps: (i have a small room too)
okay, so maybe if you get rid of some stuff then you can get a full bed! Maybe you can put all of your mom's craft stuff in those plastic bins that you can put under your bed to make more room in the closet if she doesn't let you kick her out of your closet. hehe. get rid of the vanity, and maybe (if you have enough room then you can get a small desk and put a mirror sitting on top of it so it can be both, or maybe if you have enough room you can put a small dresser to have more room for your clothes. I think putting up shelves sounds like a great idea, but try to make sure they aren't overly cluttered. the trick to making a small room seem bigger, is to use light colored paint, and then brighter accessories and to try to keep stuff off the floor. So throw away the newspaper on the floor (if you have read it already) and maybe you can get one of those over the door hooks for your closet to provide extra space and you can put your 2 backpacks there. (if you don't like or don't use one than maybe you should give it away). go through everything in your room to reduce the amount of junk, and maybe for one of the shelves, or in the bookcase then get some of those storage bins to hide the clutter. I hope i helped and good luck!

What should I bring for my kids traveling internationally?

Jewel

We are going on vacation to visit family for the first time in Europe this summer but I am a little scared about the flight over and back. I have a 10 yr old, 6 yr old and a 2 yr old (all boys) and I need some serious ideas to keep them entertained during all parts of the flight (take off, supper, sleeping, landing etc). I'm especially worried about the 2 yr old and 6 yr old. What are some good traveling tips, ideas to bring (not just in general toys, what kind?) hints that would help on their first international airplane ride?

Answer
I've been traveling internationally with my son since he was born (now 26 months) and for longer than that with my nieces and nephews and with a little planning all will go smooth. Looks like you are already on the right track.

Here are some tips:

1 Arrive at the airport early to get checked in comfortably and be sure you have documents in order. In addition to a passport, it is always good to carry a copy of your children's birth certificate -- you may need it to prove you are their parent. Also if you are traveling alone with your children be sure you have a notarized letter from the other parent giving you permission to do so or you may be stopped at security.

If you need a stroller for your 2-year-old, you can go through security with a stroller and take your baby in the stroller right up to the door of the airplane -- you stroller will need a tag that you get at the gate -- and they will check it for you there. Take advantage of early boarding for families -- if your kids won't get too crazy waiting on the plane for everyone else to board. If so, board last.

2. When booking your seat, ask for seats in the bulkhead. That is the area right in the front of the plane. It has more room and will allow you to easily change your child or let him/her play when it is safe to do so. One note though: Because there are no seats in from of you, you'll have to stow all your carry-on luggage in the overhead compartments during take-off and landing and that could impede access for necessary items like toys. A window seat is great for kids and maybe your kids can share, switching off for the flight. My 2-year-old loves to look out the window and see the wing and the clouds!

3. Be sure to bring favorite snacks (we always have cheerios on hand) as many airlines don't serve food anymore and those that do either serve things kids won't eat, can't eat (peanuts) or serve junk food. (We order a kid's meal on one flight and it consisted of potato chips, candy bars and a sugery drink -- things we don't give our kid anyway, but a disaster to pump them full of sugar on a plane). Bottled water is plentiful on board so you can always bring dried cereals that can be rehydrated and heated by flight attendants, who in my experience have always been willing to help. Remember that there are limits on liquids that you can bring on through security these days -- including baby foods -- but whatever you buy after security is okay. Look for easy to carry, easy to eat foods in the airport. I know not always easy but even applesauce is a good choice.

4. Before the flight, go to a dollar store and pick up some cheap toys. I usually get one thing for every hour of flight -- that would be times 3 for you. What you get is really up to your child's interest but make it something that can carried easily. A new toy is a novelty and will keep your child entertained longer. Do pack a few favorites from home, especially some good books your child loves to read or have read to her. But if your child has an irreplaceable toy (a favorite teddy bear he has to sleep with for example) either don't bring it or don't bring it out during flight in case it gets lost. Your child will be desperate! (Don't pack it in your checked luggage either -- if this gets lost, same problem). Before you leave find out if the plane your will be on has in-seat entertainment systems. These are great for kids because they can play video games or watch TV or movies. If not, you may consider investing in a portable DVD player if you kids will wear headphones -- although with three kids unless you want to lug 3 players this could become a problem.

Make sure each kid has there own piece of luggage -- a backpack or small rollaway -- to keep their stuff in and make them feel like they a big kid for having their own suitcase.

Get the kids interested in the flight plan -- they usually show this on video at certain points during the flight. They can figure out how long they've been flying, what countries they've passed over, etc. Lots of fun for the older ones.

5. To deal with pressure on the ears for your child, be sure they have something to suck on. The older two can learn how to yawn or unblock their ears in otherways like by chewing gum. For the little one, if your child takes a pacifier let him have it during takeoff and landing. If not a sippy cup is good.

6. Some people might recommend this but I don't think you have to drug your child to fly with them. Some people will suggest that you give your child things like benadryl to make them sleep and I think this is a mistake. You child should only take medications that are medically necessary not for the convenience of you or other adults who may not like that you are traveling with an infant.

What you should do is carry any common medicines you use for your children (Children's Tylenol, for example) in case they get sick while you are abroad and you can't find medicines they are used to taking. Also keep your pediatrician's contact info with you in case you have to contact them.

7. Always ask for help if you need it from airline employees both on the ground and in-flight. They are more than happy to help to make your flight as smooth as possible.

Finally, check with your pediatrician before you leave to see if they have any suggestions for you or if your child is not well if it is okay to fly.

Hope this is all helpful and that you have a great flight and vacation!

What should I put in my carry on for a 20 hour flight with 4 hour stop?

Malissa

So early next month I'm moving to Australia from Ireland and will be flying for approx. 20 hours with a 4 hour stop in Abu Dhabi. And I have some questions...

1~ What will be worth putting in my clear ziploc bag? Like should I put a mini shamoo in there or not bother because obviously there are no showers on the plane. Should I put my toothbrush in a separate ziploc bag or the same one? (I know the airline I'm flying with gives you toothpaste and a brush anyway)

2~ Do wipes count as a liquid and are they allowed in my carry on? Like a pack of face wipes and a pack of baby wipes.

3~ Do I have to declare hair oil, perfume and a regular sized shampoo that will be in my suitcase because they are liquids or not?

4~ Since my carry on will be above my head and I don't want to be reaching up or getting someone else to move so I can get it, can I have a little makeup bag like in front of my feet to put my hairbrush, my "monthly items", hand sanitizer etc. in?

Thanks ⤠And I just put it in this section because I haven't gotten any answers in the travelling section plus I'm presuming many of you have flown before so yep â¤

Answer
1. No to shampoo. Yes to a travel size of dry shampoo. Put it in your liquids bag just to be on the safe side but I'm not sure if its technically a liquid. Yes to travel toothpaste, no to toothbrush if they're giving you one anyway. And yes put it in the same bag, just make it easier on yourself.
2. They do not count as liquid and yes you can put them in carry on, but I wouldn't bring a whole pack I'd just stick a few in a ziplock and call it a day.
3. No.
4. Almost all airlines allow two carry on items. Bring a cross body purse for your essentials and boarding pass, passport etc and put bigger/heavier stuff in the other bag (I recommend a backpack.) make sure you grab your book or magazine out of the bigger bag before you sit down.

Bring a tiny bottle of mouthwash, mascara, and facial & hand lotion. Trust me you will be glad you have it when you land! Go to the bathroom 30 mins or so before landing and use your face wipes, then put on some lotion, mascara, and illuminator or blush so you don't look like a zombie when you get off the plane. :) recycled airplane air is evil. Also, hand sanitizer, tissues, and cough drops or gum are great to bring.

Good luck with your move!

What is a good baby sling that is comfortable and causes minimal back pain?

baby backpack carrier prices image

Chiro

I am looking for a good quality and hopefully cute baby sling for a baby shower gift. I really don't want to spend more than $100.

Answer
Personally, I like the Over the Shoulder Baby Holder (OTSBH). It comes in a lot of fabrics and several sizes (based on the size of the adult, not the baby--it can be worn as long as the baby is carried). But mostly, I like it because it is so good for my back.

I have always had back problems, but when I bought my first OTSBH, I had been carrying my child in an aluminum frame backpack. My back and neck were so sore that I could turn my head from side to side more than a tiny bit. I bought the OTSBH in desperation. Wearing my child (then 1 1/2) in it for many hours a day actually *healed* my sore back!! Two days later, I had full movement back (other times when I've had the same problem it took months and repeated therapeutic massage).

A sling is better than other kinds of baby carriers because they are more flexible. A baby can lie down in front of you in at least 2 different positions, and it supports her/his back perfectly. When they're a little older, they can sit in front of you, facing outwards with you supporting the back and head. And a toddler can sit on your hip or back.

I'm sure most brands of slings are similar; the important thing is that a sling is worn with the fabric spread out along the entire back and baby's weight is also supported on the hip and opposite shoulder. So it supports the back and spreads the weight evenly on the parent's upper body. But the OTSBH is also better (in my opinion) because it has padding (along both long sides and on the parent's shoulder), and is adjustable. Some slings are sewn closed and cannot be adjusted; this means you need a different one for each parent, and it makes it harder to get it on and off. And the padding makes it more comfortable on the wearer's shoulder, and makes me feel more sure that the baby can't fall out the side (although I'm sure the unpadded ones are safe--it just *feels* safer). Unpadded slings have the advantage of taking less room to pack up, but I'll keep the comfort and skip the ease of packing.

They retail for about $45 and are widely available on baby stores on the Web. I think all slings are in the same price range.

What's the one must have baby item for new parents?

verdict

My wife and I are having a baby boy in April and I wanted to know what is your opinion of the must have baby gear/item for new parents. I'm not talking about a crib, or a bottle or things like that, I want something that new parents wouldn't think of.

Answer
so I'll list my favorites in order of recommendation:

A baby sling - assuming this is your first child (or even if it's not), you'll probably go through at least a short stage of wanting to have your baby constantly with you. A baby sling is the perfect solution. You can hold your baby right next to you, be completely comfortable, and still have both hands free. The other great use for a sling is if your wife wants to breastfeed. I was able to nurse my daughter in a sling while sitting or standing, and my version actually had a cloth attachment that maintained my privacy during (while I personally have no problems with women nursing in public, some places do - and not all nursing moms are comfortable exposing themselves). My best advice if you get a sling is to go somewhere that you can actually try them on. While some brands are more reputable than others, this is definitely something you want made to fit you. And when your baby's older (at least able to hold their head up), I would suggest switching to a backpack style carrier (front/back or both) since these do a better job of distributing their higher weight.

A travel crib/playpen - I plan on skipping a real crib altogether with my next child and using one of these instead. It works just as well for sleeping up to the age when you'd typically buy a toddler bed anyway, it's smaller, it's portable (Grandma's willing to babysit? Great, we're all ready!), and higher end models even have a relatively high changing table and bassinet for babies up to around 20 lbs (which is great when you're a new mom and your back constantly hurts anyway). Plus, you can get a very nice model for under $100, as opposed to the hefty price of a new crib.

A diaper pail - unless you're planning to take out trash ever day, religiously, these really do make a huge difference. You may not notice any smells at first, but as soon as you start feeding that little one real foods, expect to need noseplugs. A high quality diaper pail helps with this problem tremendously (though don't expect miracles - I've never heard of one that completely eliminates odors, but they do make a huge difference). I'm sure someone out there would disagree with me, but my biggest advice on buying one of these is to skip the Genie!! I have known numerous people who got one and they have all been extremely disappointed. Plus it takes specialty bags which are pretty expensive. I'd stick with the cheaper Diaper Champ, or if you want something nicer for a fancy nursery, the Diaper Decor.

A carrier carseat - ok, so I know a carseat qualifies as "required items" (aka not what you're looking for), but I can't even begin to count the number of times that my daughter fell asleep in the car, just to wake up when we got to wherever we were going because I had to unstrap her from the carseat. With a carrier, you can remove the carseat from the base, leaving your child still safely strapped in place - and blissfully asleep. (Trust me, there's nothing worse than a baby who's cranky from being woken up but too well rested to go back to sleep. This was especially horrible when trying to keep her quiet someplace like church.)
