what to buy for a newborn baby?

doberman_l

what are the basic things you need to have for the beggining of a babys life?
such as diapers, etc?
please help

Answer
Bath/Grooming:
-Diapers
-Wipes
-Desitin, or any other rash cream or baby powder
-wash cloths
-hooded towels
-Baby wash
-Baby bath tub

Clothing:
-Lots of onesies and sleepers
-Receiving blankets for swaddling
-socks
-sun hat
-Mittens to prevent scratching
-Baby laundry detergent (use for the first year)
-Bibs and burp cloths

-If you are not nursing, a couple cans of formula/bottles/bottle brush with nipple cleaner
-Crib/waterproof pads/bedding

-Lots of binkies(if you are using them), nail clippers, bulb syringe for suctioning mucous, baby thermometer (forehead one works best), infant medication in case of fever

-Infant car seat and stroller

-A monitor is nice to have. We got one that detects if baby is breathing and alerts if breathing stops, but to be honest we never turned the motion sensor on. The few times I did the alarm went off right away.

Other things that are not necessities but great to have are:
-boppy
-infant swing (great for a place for baby to calm down or nap)
-baby backpack (slings were recalled for strangulation)
-bouncer/vibrating chair
-bumbo (good for learning to sit and for feeding time w/"play tray")
-rattles and toys
-mirror for in the car so you can see baby
-diaper bag
-sleep wedge (this is good for making baby feel cozy and so he/she stays on back)

A lot of things like the swing, bouncer, etc. can be bought at second hand baby stores. Most things are gently used and some are even brand new for so much cheaper!

What toiletries do you personally bring with you on long backpacking/camping trips?

What do you take with you to get yourself cleaned up and keep up with your good hygiene?
If you could give suggestions to a company to design a hygiene kit for the outdoors, what would you want in a kit, besides the obvious lightweight and compact?

Answer
First, you wouldn't market the same kit to backpackers and campers. The backpacker is interested in saving weight and space and a serious backpacker wouldn't buy the kit, they'd make their own, that is, unless you created some new products like sawed-off tooth brushes, toothpaste in a gel tablet, very lightweight squeeze containers with just enough contents for a week or smaller size for a weekend (like larger, resealable ketchup packets. "Remember, if you cant use it for more than one purpose, leave it at home." And it doesn't matter if it's disposable. The backpacker still has to cate it out. The camper is interested in convenience, little or no clean up, somewhat compact and lower weight than household items.

Otherwise, these are some items to consider.
Mini toothbrush w/cover, sample/travel size Tom's (natural) toothpaste, tech towel, Dr. Bronner's Pure Castile Soap (for shampoo, body soap, dish soap, toothpaste, mouthwash...), Hand Sanitizer, "baby" wipes, bio TP, resealable baggies, small trash bags, weather proof card with bio-friendly instructions (where to create latrine, where not to wash dishes, how to create potable water, strike camp/clean up checklist, etc), woman's urinal (for women's specific kit), tiny stainless mirror (doubles as signal mirror), containers kit, and a list of other items with part numbers to add to or refill the kit including a mini daily med/pill dispenser.

That should do it, though I bet there are 100 other things you could include that would be very useful.

High School Girls; What do you keep in your backpacks?

I am trying to figure out everything that should go in my backpack because I am reorganizing and getting a new one. So what are your necessities? Organization tips? Extra things you have?

Answer
I usually just carry a few things in my bookbag because I don't like having a lot of weight on my back during the day at school. Luckily this is my last year! But what I do usually keep in my bookbag is: a few folders, pencil pouch (with pens, pencils, erasers, etc), my calculators, and an agenda. I usually go to my locker quite a lot to change my books and binders and just carry those in my hands while walking to class.

Some organization tips: 1) If you have a pocket at the back of your bookbag (I have a north face and at the area towards your back I have a pocket) you can put your folders, paper, etc. there so it doesn't move around or have important papers get crumpled up in your bag if they happen to fall out. 2) Speaking of important papers, have a specific folder that you keep your homework, forms, or anything important in so you know where to find it when you need it. 3) Keep your smaller things (like pencils and calculators) in a smaller zipper portion of your bookbag so it doesn't mix with the larger things and it will be easier to find.

I assume you aren't going to be carrying a purse? If you want to keep some important things with you that you might need or will need throughout the day I would suggest: chapstick, feminine products (tampons, pads, baby wipes), a mirror, hand sanitizer, lotion, gum, tissues, mints, and if you want (I don't) but you can carry a small makeup bag around to hold small makeup products if you want to touch up your makeup sometime during the day. You can keep all these things in a small bag, makeup bag, or clutch-like bag and stick it in a small zipper part of your bookbag. Hope I helped!
