Baby sling?
Sky
I want to get a sling or backpack to carry my baby in, but I have no idea which one to get! I've seen some women carrying their babies in slings that look very simple, they look like just a long strip of fabric that they tie around the waist and over the shoulder. They look very comfortable. I'm trying to find out where to get that style but I can't find anything like it when I search. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? What are they called and where can I buy one?
Or, is there anyone in the know who can tell me which is the best sling for comfort and healthy positioning?
Wow thanks everyone! I think what I saw was the Moby or the Didymos. I was just using totally the wrong search terms! You are all so helpful I wish I could give everyone 10 points!
Answer
I have both a sling- which is a one piece of fabric that goes around you, almost like a tube- and a wrap, which is a long section of fabric that you wrap around yourself several times.
I LOVE my sling. I use a Hotsling and have been very happy with it. The one piece slings go off of your measurements, like what size shirt you have. You'll need to measure yourself for the best fit. I found a good price for one on eBay.
I also love my Moby wrap--which is what you described-- it's just one long piece of soft jersey type fabric that's basically one size fits most. I also bought it on eBay. I particularly liked it in the beginning as it's really adjustable.
I'll link to a site on baby wearing so you can see all the different kinds of slings/wraps and decide what works for you. I also made a baby sling from one of the patterns on the site. It turned out well, but I'm not crazy about the fabric I picked (too scratchy) so I don't often use it. Even if you know very little about sewing, the project is really easy.
I never use my bjorn, not ever. The slings are so much cuter and more convenient with all the ways you can wear them, plus they fold up to be very small. I get so many compliments on mine all the time. Just this morning I had my 8 month old in my Hotsling on my back while I was doing the dishes.
Get ready to get noticed! People are just tickled when they see a baby in a sling or wrap. I get compliments and nice comments all the time. I especially love when they're like, "Who thought of that?! They never had those when I had a baby!" I never say to them, well, slings/wraps have been around for thousands of years, it's hardly a new idea, it's just an old idea that we rediscovered, haha.
