Since the Martin Backpacker has the acoustic quality of a paper clip, are there any good travel sized guitars?

I could play another instrument... because I can play other instruments... but a travel instrument should be travel instruments. Even smaller.

Martin got that part right, and sacrificed on sound way too much. Still, it's not sized to fit in a pack, it can fit outside a pack easily.

I was thinking of childrens' instruments, but never is there a childrens' toy guitar that plays well. There are youth-sized guitars, however, which might be the way to go.

Still, a travel instrument should be a travel instrument. That also means it has to be willing to take exposure to the elements. It either has to be an "outdoor instrument" and be durable and expensive, or it has to be disposable and cheap, yet play well.

That's a dilemma.

Mandolin and ukulele are pretty good choices. The Baby Taylor sounds pretty sweet in my opinion, and is a good bit smaller than the typical guitar. My personal recommendation would be a cigar box guitar. You could build it yourself or have one made or grab one off ebay. When done right, they sound good, great for backpacking, and are very durable. No need to worry about banging it up, its a cigar box. Most are 4 string meant for a slide, but you can also get 6 string ones both acoustic or electric. There's also cigar box ukuleles, even smaller, durable, and actually pretty cool sounding. I had a ton of fun building cigar box instruments.

of course, there's always spoons...

99 cent only store has cute Elmo backpacks, crayons, balls and stuff. Ebay also has this kind of stuff. Has she been on pbskids.org? Way cute printable coloring sheets and interactive games.
