My boyfriend is going to study at Cardiff University in Wales for 6 weeks, and I get to go with him. We'll have some travel time, not sure how much yet - probably weekends plus maybe one full week. We want to see multiple countries (probably 6-12) during that time. We heard once that getting the rail passes in the USA would be cheaper. What passes should we get and where should we get them? We don't want to spend a fortune!

Answer
check eurorail site but the rail tickets are sold in zones so be careful it may not be such a good deal for you as amtrack is for europeans , also check ryan air , easyjet , bmi baby for cheap flights from Cardiff or Bristol or Swansea probably to Holland ( Amsterdam ) , France ( Paris Nice , Germany ( Hamburg ) you need to reserve well in advance for inexpensive flights so planning is essential . take a small 2 man tent backpacks and just ask if you need campsites at your destinations . if you hike i would recommend 2 trails close to Cardiff the Offas dyke and the Pembroke coast path but you need boots rucksack wet weather gear

I have moderate to high functioning AUTISM, could I actually be seen by a pediatrician as a patient?

I am CHRONOLOGICALLY 32 years old, but I am emotionally and developmentally/socially at the level of a 4 1/2 year old. I wanted to know what HMOs would allow me to see a pediatrician. I have a 45 year old friend who is mildly retarded, and up until 4 years ago, she was still seeing her pediatrician. She's more mature than me in many ways, and has much more common sense, I'm serious, and she's like maybe a 10 year old. Anyway, I belong to Kaiser Permanente and I called up an older pediatrician and explained my situation. He actually told me that he would have been more than happy to have me as a patient, but because of Kaiser's stupid rules and the fact it is is a bureaucracy (Have you ever seen anyone bite their own employer?)
he would be unable to see me. Kaiser automatically says if you are over age 18 then you can't see pediatricians anymore, EVEN IF YOU LOOK LIKE A BABY!!! This elderly pediatrician told me that he has seen other people with Autism get pediatricians as their doctor (not in Kaiser Permanente, of course, but with other HMOS. One of my friends who is normal told me that Blue Cross would allow it because he is 25 and they sent him to see his pediatrician. I don't feel even comfortable in my OWN body, because I'm like a 4 year old in a adult's body. I mean, I love Care Bears, Teletubbies (and have many Teletubbies backpacks), Sesame Street, Barney and still suck a pacifier. I've actually gotten free pacifiers from pacifier companies in Europe and the USA, because I've been a customer for so long they are grateful!! (I use primarily Mam pacifiers, but also use Nuks).

I am a whiner when I get sick, and I feel that seeing a pediatrician might be in my, and possibly, everybody's best interests. If I ended up having surgery for something serious like stomach ulcer perforation or something like a stroke, I'd be a big handful getting out. I am very pain sensitive, I am worse than a 2 year old. I call everyone for help when I have a stomachache. A simple headache can keep me in bed for a whole day because nothing cures it except sleeping (Advil, Tylenol,
Motrin IB, etc all don't work). I can see if I had surgery I would come out crying and screaming, and I don't think I would fit into a regular adult ward, they'd have to send me to pediatrics. They would understand more, because children complain more.

If you have nothing good to say, then don't say it. I have a developmental disability called Autism which is very serious and not fun at all.

So what HMOs would let me see a pediatrician??? Obviously there are adults seeing pediatricians (probably most of them developmentally
disabled like me, but I'm sure a few normal people even). Any help??

Thanks

Preston from CA

Answer
Having reared an autistic grandson and having worked with many of them, I know they certainly have their quirks, but I have not seen anything that approaches your situation.

Pediatricians specialize in childrens' bodies - because children's bodies are different from adults. It has nothing to do with watching Sesame Street. You are pretty articulate and know exactly what you are doing.

I believe you are making fun of autistic people here (in a very amateur way), and I resent it.
