What's the one must have baby item for new parents?

My wife and I are having a baby boy in April and I wanted to know what is your opinion of the must have baby gear/item for new parents. I'm not talking about a crib, or a bottle or things like that, I want something that new parents wouldn't think of.

Answer
so I'll list my favorites in order of recommendation:

A baby sling - assuming this is your first child (or even if it's not), you'll probably go through at least a short stage of wanting to have your baby constantly with you. A baby sling is the perfect solution. You can hold your baby right next to you, be completely comfortable, and still have both hands free. The other great use for a sling is if your wife wants to breastfeed. I was able to nurse my daughter in a sling while sitting or standing, and my version actually had a cloth attachment that maintained my privacy during (while I personally have no problems with women nursing in public, some places do - and not all nursing moms are comfortable exposing themselves). My best advice if you get a sling is to go somewhere that you can actually try them on. While some brands are more reputable than others, this is definitely something you want made to fit you. And when your baby's older (at least able to hold their head up), I would suggest switching to a backpack style carrier (front/back or both) since these do a better job of distributing their higher weight.

A travel crib/playpen - I plan on skipping a real crib altogether with my next child and using one of these instead. It works just as well for sleeping up to the age when you'd typically buy a toddler bed anyway, it's smaller, it's portable (Grandma's willing to babysit? Great, we're all ready!), and higher end models even have a relatively high changing table and bassinet for babies up to around 20 lbs (which is great when you're a new mom and your back constantly hurts anyway). Plus, you can get a very nice model for under $100, as opposed to the hefty price of a new crib.

A diaper pail - unless you're planning to take out trash ever day, religiously, these really do make a huge difference. You may not notice any smells at first, but as soon as you start feeding that little one real foods, expect to need noseplugs. A high quality diaper pail helps with this problem tremendously (though don't expect miracles - I've never heard of one that completely eliminates odors, but they do make a huge difference). I'm sure someone out there would disagree with me, but my biggest advice on buying one of these is to skip the Genie!! I have known numerous people who got one and they have all been extremely disappointed. Plus it takes specialty bags which are pretty expensive. I'd stick with the cheaper Diaper Champ, or if you want something nicer for a fancy nursery, the Diaper Decor.

A carrier carseat - ok, so I know a carseat qualifies as "required items" (aka not what you're looking for), but I can't even begin to count the number of times that my daughter fell asleep in the car, just to wake up when we got to wherever we were going because I had to unstrap her from the carseat. With a carrier, you can remove the carseat from the base, leaving your child still safely strapped in place - and blissfully asleep. (Trust me, there's nothing worse than a baby who's cranky from being woken up but too well rested to go back to sleep. This was especially horrible when trying to keep her quiet someplace like church.)

Is it possible to pay to use a shower in a European hostel without paying for a room?

Brittney

I'm going camping in Sweden and Poland next year for about a month and I plan on only sleeping in a tent. Is it possible to pay to use a shower at a hostel but not actually pay the full price for a room?
I will bathe in the Black Sea or use baby wipes if I have to, but a hot shower once in a while would be nice. I can't bring that much gear or water with me so a portable camping shower is not possible.

*Any savvy tips on how to bathe while camping/ backpacking in a city would be great. Thank you!

Answer
Camping places in Sweden usually have showers where you pay per minute.

Any opinions about baby backpacks and stroller systems?

army_siste

I don't have a baby yet but I might in the future. My question is about baby backpacks and strollers. Snuggli is one backpack I have seen. How useful are they? I saw one that said it could be used in the front for a small baby and on the back for a larger one up to 27 pounds. Are they comfortable and easy to get on and off? My concern was would my back start hurting after awhile? I have also seen some that have a metal frame that goes on the back? It looks kind of like the old hiking backpacks. Has anyone used that type? Is the soft Snuggli type better than the metal frame type?
On to strollers. I see alot of the stroller systems that come with the carseat carriers. Does anyone have an opinion whether they think the type that holds a carseat is better than just a regular stroller? I can see the benefits of both types. I would be a busy mom who be going on lots of walks and would also need to have one that would fold up nicely for the trunk of the car.Any other must haves for a baby?

Answer
Baby backpacks: I liked them okay. My husband loved ours. He would carry our daughter around all the time. They get in the way if you're trying to do something (and you really can't bend over) but they're nice for walking around and shopping if you don't want a stroller.
Stroller: Get one with a car seat carrier. They are so nice. You have to have a car seat anyway so why not get one that can snap onto your stroller. Its good for an infant because you know their head is protected in the carseat and you can see them at all times because you put the carseat on facing you in the stroller. Also, when your child is too big for the car seat, you can just use the stroller as a regular stroller. We have a 17 month old and have both kinds. Both fit into our trunk nicely. Our Jeep stroller (which is for older kids kind of a more expensive umbrella stroller) is great for going to the store. Her other stroller is nice if he needs a nap because she can lay down in it. Other things to have are a bouncy seat, a swing (our daughter absolutely loved hers), and for hen s/he can walk a stationary set so s/he can stand and play at the same time. We also liked our jumparoo but some people say they're bad for kids' legs. There are many good things for a baby, but it's all about what's good for you and your baby.

What is your favorite "baby-wearing" sling?

Elliott's

I am looking into getting a new one, my son is almost 1. I have gone through three different slings/carriers, he outgrew some of them, the others were hard on my back. Had a front carrier sling when he was an infant, then switched to the backpack styles (like Bjorn), but now I am looking at maybe a Moby, Peanut Shell, K'Tan, Kangaroo Carrier, etc...

I am kind of sick of wasting money on ones that don't work/hurt.

Advice, tips, especially for older babies? Which carrier do you prefer?

Answer
We had some issues with hating carriers after a short time (especially since our son, born tiny, has ended up being rather large.) It's only recently that I figured out that if you GO to Baby's R Us and ask a manager, they will send someone over to the carrier aisle to unpack and let you try any carrier they sell. It takes a while, obviously, but we brought our son and really took our time over it this last time.

We were looking for a backpack and ended up buying the Kelty TC 2.1 and could not be happier with it - I know you're not looking for a backpack style carrier, but if your baby is getting over 20-22 pounds, it's worth checking out. It is very adjustable, and acts basically exactly like a hiking pack, except with a space for a baby.

How can I make my school uniform look cute and unique?

I have to wear khaki dickies or plaid skirt
blue school shirt or white
white, black , or blue belt
they dont really care about shoe color

Answer
I just saw an article about this about a week ago. It all depends on what the level of strictness your school board has set for the wearing of your uniform.

1. Strict: Add some cute jewelry, a layered necklace or one of those cute charm/locket necklaces. A great brooch from somewhere like Claire's. A couple of colorful bangles, and a chunky ring. Or a great scarf in a a colorful pattern. Switch out your plain backpack for a more playful color. Adorable flats, matte black, or even denim or a cute pair of skimmers. Pull your hair back in messy ponytail, leaving a few wisps around your face and add a really darling headband. A rosy cheek and a glossy peach lip with a soft natural eye will draw the focus up!

2. Less strict: Stay with the bold jewelry still, but go with the multi-strand beaded necklaces, metallic bangles, and ring optional. Color as long as it's not clashing, the sassier the better. Trade the backpack for a cute messenger bag. Go for a small kitten heel in black with a bow detail or more fun flats.

3. Relaxed: Again jewelry jewelry jewelry. Combined a double strand chain necklace with a cute delicate heart charm necklace. A big bauble bracelet and a gemstone cocktail ring (think huge stone) An adorable cardigan with a small graphic detail, 3/4 sleeves, unbuttoned. A carry all tote in an adorable sassy pattern or design rather then a backpack. Simple dressy make-up to draw the eye upward. A great medium high heel, Mary-Janes, to a kitten heel. go for a flare of color. Since you wear neutrals in your uniform (most school uniforms are neutral) a sparkly silver or gold kitten heel or a baby blue Mary-Jane.

Hope this helps give you ideas, depending on what your school allows or not! Good luck!

what are some teenage girl must haves for back to school?

Alexis

ok so I already posted this question but I accidently did it under make up.... whoopsie. But anyways could you all give me some shopping ideas? thanks!

Answer
Ok so I'm making a list For the 2013 - 2014 year.
You'll need:
* High waisted jeans and shorts, you can buy them cheap at thrift stores and cut some into shorts
* I'm pretty sure leather jackets are still in style so get some at like forever 21 or urban planet or sirens if you live in Canada
* Jean vest
* Jean shirt
*. Skinny jeans
* A cute hobo bag or a cute backpack that you get at forever 21 or Claire's
* A muscle shirt
* A front tie shirt
* Uggs are always in style
* ROMPERS like jean rompersor cute lace ones just ones with a cute little pattern
* jumpsuits not granny like patterns but a cute chic pattern
* grey or black leggings. WEAR LACE UNDERWEAR OR A THONG WITH IT IF YOU CAN. If you can't try not to wear weird baggy granny underwear
* cute crop top from like forever 21. Those cute ones that show off your belly button a little and you can wear it with high waisted shorts or jeans
* pullover sweater
* pullover hoodie
* lifeguard sweaters are really in you can get them at a beach broad walk or something
* beanie
* a cute twist head wrap from like Claire's when you're lazy and wanna tie your hair up
* hair donut for perfect donut buns
* good quality yoga pants
* cute lace up boots but I'm not sure where to find it just look around
* cute riding/ cowboy boots
NOW FOR MAKEUP AND MORE ACCESSORIES
* for lazy days just light concealer, mascara, and something like eos lip balm ( you can get it at your local drugstore )
* for jazzy days when you're wearing a cute outfit a light layer of foundation, concealer, blush, mascara, eyeliner, light eyeshadow ( nothing too sparkly, like a light brown ), and baby lips moisturizing lip balm in like pink or cherry red ( foundation can be replaced by tinted moisturizer I'd you'd like )
* stud or pearl earrings and if you have your seconds and\or thirds pierced then studs on those and cute cross or infinity or hoop earrings
* those long necklaces with a bunch of charms from like Claire's is always cute
* cute scarf to wear with like a jean shirt
NOW FOR WARNINGS
DON'T and I mean DON'T wear SnapBack hats or baseball caps or whatever unless its like you're boyfriends. And even if it is DONT constantly wear it, take pictures of you with it, and go around posting pictures of you wearing a SnapBack on instagram or something saying stuff like #girlswhowearhats it's weird and guys find it really dumb
**btw some of these are just personality warnings**
* don't be THAT girl. You know, that girl who hangs out with guys and says cause there's " less drama " but actually does it cause she wants a boyfriend
* it's fine to hang out with guys but don't become one. When you hang out with guys still be cute and girly but just laugh with them or make them laugh. Guys love that
* don't change too drastically. It's weird
* don't wear a load of makeup to school that will make you look pasty
* don't ever ask a guy out.
* always smell good!
* carry around like tissues for runny noses or a spill
* make sure you know who you real friends are

Well that's about it. I really hope this helps!

Convertible car seats...?

double baby backpack carrier for twins
 on Carrier Sling
double baby backpack carrier for twins image

Rene

I have twin boys that turning 1 in a couple of weeks. They spend a significant amount of time in 3 different cars (mine, my husbands, and grandparents...they babysit). Which means that we need SIX car seats. At their cheapest they are $45. Multiply that by six and it gets expensive. Is anyone aware of any company that gives discounts to parents of multiples or know of any company that sells them cheaper? Any help would be much appreciated.

Answer
Whoa! Well, you are right on wanting seats for each vehicle they are in frequently. The more often a car seat is uninstalled/reinstalled, the more likely it will be installed incorrectly as we rush to get it in and out. So it is a need. Babies R Us has a multiples discount, but you do have to buy them all at the same time. From their website: "BABIES "R" US MULTIPLE BIRTH DISCOUNT

Does Babies "R" Us offer a multiple birth discount? We are pleased to inform you of our multiple birth discount. Babies "R" Us defines a multiple birth as parents with two or more babies the same age. We offer our customers 10% off two or more of the same items purchased in the same order (e.g. two cribs, two bedding sets, two strollers, etc.). The discount can not be combined with any other offers, including sale priced items, and applies to the following categories only: furniture, bedding sets and baby gear, including car seats, strollers, travel yards, highchairs, swings, gates, exersaucers/walkers and backpack/carriers. Double strollers and matching infant car seats are also eligible for the multiple birth discount. This offer is not available on any special purchase items. Corporate sales do not qualify for the multiple birth discount. "

The cheapest seat you are referring to is the Cosco Scenera, and its actually not a bad seat. Not hard to install, easy to use, and rear faces to 35lbs (more on why that's so great later!) The bad part is, you get what you pay for. It only forward faces to 40lbs and the average child will outgrow it at 2-3 years old which means at that time you'll be out shopping for 2 new harnessed seats again, b/c 2-3 year olds can not be put in booster seats. If you're ok with that, I'd suggest getting a couple of these for some of the cars. They'd last long enough that you can work towards saving for the harnessed seats they're going to need when they outgrow them.

As for the least expensive in convertible seats that you will get your money's worth out of and really like, here's the pick of the litter:
When shopping Remember these rules:
1)the BEST seat is the one that fits your child, fits your car, and will be used correctly 100% of the time. (This is why convenience features DO make a difference and ARE worth the money! If its easy to use, you're more likely to use it correctly.
2)children need to stay rear facing as long as possible.
Turning kids forward at 20lbs/1year is an outdated practice that could cost you your child's life!
A)A forward-facing child under 2 years old is 5 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a crash than a rear-facing child of the same age.
B)A child's vertabrae do not fully fuse until 3-6 years old, before then, she is at great risk for internal decapitation. The spinal column can stretch up to 2 inches in a crash BUT the spinal cord can only stretch up to 1/4 inch before it snaps and baby is gone.
C)Current research suggests that children under the age of two years are 75 percent less likely to die or be seriously injured when they are riding rear facing.
D)In a recent article from Injury Prevention, it was found that the odds of severe injury to forward facing children age 12-23 months old was 5.32 times higher than a rear facing child. (Car Safety Seats For Children: Rear Facing For Best Protection; Injury Prevention 2007; 13:398-402.)
3)Once you do turn them forward facing, they need to stay in a 5 point harness as long as possible. 4 years/40lbs is the minimum for riding in a booster, and most 4 year olds have no business using one yet. If they can't sit upright for an entire trip, they need the harness of a car seat still. And, even if they do sit properly, a 5 point harness is safer, so you want to keep them in one as long as possible. This is important to consider b/c most car seats only forward face to 40lbs. My son just turned 3, and is in the 95th% for height and weight - 40" tall and weighs 41lbs. He outgrew the 40lbs seats shortly after his 2nd birthday. It was a total waste of money. He now has a Britax Marathon, which goes to 65lbs, and will be able to fit it for some time yet. If I'd have bought it when he was born, I could have had one car seat this whole time instead of the 3 I wasted money on. They are more expensive for many reasons, this is one.

So...knowing all that, here's some about specific seats. Please don't get a Graco Comfort Sport. Car seat techs call it the 'crappysport'. LOL Its a crappy seat that won't last your child very long b/c it has a really short shell. The straps twist all the time, and if they're twisted they won't support your child in a wreck properly. They're hard to install. There's nothing good about these seats except perhaps they're cheap sometimes. Ditto the Safety1st 3-in-1/Cosco Alpha Omega/Eddie Bauer 3-in1 seats. These are all the same company - same seat, just different covers. They stink. Hard to install, b/c of narrow belt paths. Ever tried to wash a skinny cup by hand? Now imagine that skinny cup with pointy edges. That's what putting your hand through these to install them is like. AND they have too short a shell to really go to 40lbs. And that's another misleading thing the box says - 5-100lbs. What the box fails to mention (you don't find out until reading the manual!) is that the harness only goes to 40lbs, NOT 100lbs! After 40lbs it must be used as a booster. And they do not make good boosters. Also, most kids have to use boosters until they're at least 8 years old. Car seats expire 6 years after the date of manufacture, so no matter what they say it is NOT the last seat you'll ever need to buy.

The Britax Marathon/Boulevard/Decathalon (These 3 are the same seat, just different variances of luxury additions, with the Marathon being the cheapest base model) can be found for regular price of $269, and on sale at Albee Baby online for $209-$219. The Marathon a wide open easy to route belt path, which makes using it correctly a lot easier, as do the built in lockoffs, which mean you never again have to use a locking clip. I can get it into 4 different vehicles in under 2 minutes. Because of the way the base is made, it fits in most cars. And, it is worth the money, b/c it lasts usually twice as long as most other car seats (all car seats expire 6 years after the date of manufacture) lasting a baby till they are 5-6 years old, where most at Walmart will only last till 2-4 years old. Rear faces to 33lbs, then forward to 65lbs. and top slots 17inches tall, lasts most kids to ages 5-6 years old. If you're really wanting these, Britax does 2 annual sales where you can get them for great prices: Sept/Oct and Jan/Feb. But check around, often you can find seats with discontinued covers at albeebaby or amazon for great prices.

The Evenflo Triumph Advance (not the original Triumph, make sure it says Advance) is a great seat. $150 version at Babies R Us has padding similar to Britax seats, top slots of 17", harnesses to 35lbs rear facing, and 50lbs forward facing. $120 Walmart version just has little less plush padding. Wide open belt path, easy to install, though it doesn't have built in lockoffs. The harness adjusts at the front of the car seat, you don't have to take the car seat out of the car just to raise/lower the straps. It has infinite harness adjustment so the harness always fits perfectly until its outgrown. No more tugging straps to tighten them either. You tighten and loosen the harness using knobs on the side of the seat. As a major bonus, it can be used in a recline position even in forward facing mode. Awesome for kids who still sleep in the car. I LOVE THIS SEAT! LOL My son, who is too big for every other car seat at Walmart has the same amount of room in this as the Britax Marathon. These were sale priced a few weeks ago at Walmart, don't know if they still are.

The Compass Tue Fit, also sold as The First Years True Fit, is a great choice, too. Here's a thread talking all about it: http://www.car-seat.org/showthread.php?t=37221&highlight=truefit Has 16.5 inch top harness slots, half inch shorter than the Britax Marathon and Evenflo Triumph Advance. Rear faces to 35lbs, forward faces to 65lbs, has built-in lockoffs, and you never have to rethread the harness to change harness height. The headrest is removable to fit better in smaller cars. $179 for the one cover Walmart offers it in, check Babies R Us and other stores for different covers at a little more expensive price.

If you have a Burlington Coat Factory near you, it would be worth making a visit to see if they have any Fisher Price Safe Voyage Deluxe car seats. The Fisher Price Safe Voyage Deluxe Convertible seat is great, it is made by Britax, without all the frills. It's the same shell as a Marathon, but for less than half the price. $130 at Albee Baby online with free shipping, or at their eBay name, babysurplus. Rear faces to 33lbs, forward to 55lbs. Easy to use, fits in most cars. A small word of warning about these seats: they are now officially not making them anymore, so the date of manufacture is getting older and older, with many being delivered that are 6+ months old already. Since car seats expire 6 years after the date of manufacture, this could make a difference to you, especially since its possible your child could fit in the seat for the next 5-6 years. But since they're marked down to $30, its an awesome deal!

It may take some juggling of seats for a little while to get really good prices on seats you actually want.

How do I help my daughter to become more independent so I can reclaim the joy of motherhood?

Ceylon

My ten month old daughter screams hysterically every time I leave the room. Which means I donât do ANYTHING all day but hold her, feed her, and play with her. My husband is a wonderful father and takes over with her when he gets home from work, which is when I start cooking and cleaning until it is time to go to bed. I have no time for me.

She will often play quietly beside me for a few minutes while Iâm on the computer or doing laundry, but if I am doing chores that require me to move from one room to the other, I have to carry her around in a sling, which is like being pregnant with a 30 pound baby and doubles the time it takes to do anything.

My husband and I waited to have a baby until if finished graduate school and we were financially stable enough for me to be a fulltime stay at home mom. I knew raising a child would be challenging, life-altering, and require sacrifice. As it turns out for me, being a stay at home mom has meant absolute selflessness.

The chronic back pain from holding her, picking her up and toting her around all day keeps me from getting good sleep. I havenât read one book since she was born; I rarely have time to read the news or exercise (outside of taking her on walks). I donât feel like I have anyone to talk to about thisâthe times Iâve tried to discuss it with my mother, she has made me feel guilty, the last time she snarled that I better get my tubes tied âASAPâ so I am not âburdened with the horror of another child.â
When I bring it up with my husband, he doesnât seem to understand and often suggests just letting her cry when I need to get something done. Each day, I put her in her crib or playpen for an hour while I shower, dress, and wolf down a microwave lunch. She spends this time screaming so hysterically that she can barely breath. Needless to say, every lunch and breakfast I have is incredibly stressful.

My baby is an intelligent, precious person, a delightful social butterfly who engages strangers in the park and at restaurants. I know this is not her fault. I LOVE her and feel grateful to have her and the financial stability to devote so much attention to her. Yet I donât want to become resentful. Nor do I want her to sense the fact that around 3 pm each day Iâm wishing I were doing anything else besides reading her a book and praying she takes a nap. My daily life feels like a bad dream where it takes me eight hours to load the dishwasher.

How do I help myself and my family?

Answer
My daughter is the same way! I have twins...and I totally understand that you need to vent a little!

Get a little backpack carrier and stick her in it. Wear her around and you can get stuff done and she will realize she would rather be down to play.

Another thing that has helped is babyproofing EVERYTHING. This way when you shower, you can bring her in the bathroom with her. Maybe give her a bottom drawer of her own so you can shower and she can play with toys in her drawer.

I also can now do laundry (in the garage) and the twins just roam around the house playing, because everything is totally safe. Seriously, it is going to help you a lot!

Whenever you can, let her "help" you. If you need to cook, stick her in front of a pot with a wooden spoon and toss some blocks or something in the pot. Ask her to help make the "soup" and ask her to stir the pot while you stir the real food.

When folding laundry, give her a pile of something colorful, like washcloths, to "fold" or sort or whatever.

What's the one must have baby item for new parents?

best cheap baby backpack
on Baby safety - Shop Cheap Baby safety from China Baby safety Suppliers ...
best cheap baby backpack image

verdict

What to pack? Will be in Hawaii for 14 days what to take?

HawaiianAp

have been to Hawaii before I always pack to much or not enough, should I buy there, cheap t-shirts? I always take one pair of pants that convert to shorts, 5 pairs of shorts, 7 days underwear, 2 nice shirts, 2 pairs of shoes, we buy our toiletries there, can anyone think of anything else? Oh and buy the way we do laundry while I'm there.

How will i be able to carry all of this stuff?

best baby diaper backpack

best baby diaper backpack image
Q. LOL i have a stupid question but im sure some of you moms have a solution so. Well since im still a teenager im still in school. But i also have a baby. So i go to a school for teen-parents. Anywho my question is how am i going to be able to carry my purse,diaper-bag, backpack & of course my daughter. Like i have my backpack for school, diaper bag for my girl, purse for my stuff & then of course my baby how can i carry all of this stuff ( well my daughters a human not stuff :)). Do you think i should put my stuff in my daughters diaper-bag? I know this is a stupid question but i just cant figure it out ( im really tired lol) Does anybody have a solution? Thanks :)
I already have a stroller :)

Answer
Put your purse in your backpack that will help with one bag. Is there a spot in the care center that you can leave some extra baby items so you don't have to carry them everyday? I know most day cares have a special cubby for each child that they keep their extra stuff in maybe your school with have something similar. Or If you have a locker there you can leave some extra baby items there.

What do I need to pack in my babies diaper bag?

zackncats

I am having a baby girl and I need to know what to pack in her diaper bag.

Answer
The other people gave a good list of items. One lifesaver for me was a container with small disposable bags for when a poop happens at a friends house.

Advice: Make an emergency bag and throw it in the trunk of your car. I filled up a backpack with water, individual formula packets, a couple bottles, diapers, wipes, a roll of paper towels (trust me, it comes in handy) extra clothes, sunscreen, snacks, ect. Unless you have a diaper bag the size of a shopping cart, you just can't carry everything around. My advice, take a small diaper bag with just the essentials and have the other bag for backup. Afterall, you will forget things from time to time.

Do I have to use an approved car/booster seat on Alaska Airlines?

best infant backpack carriers
on baby-carrier-backpack | the flower child blog
best infant backpack carriers image

lachburke

I am booked on a flight on Alaska Airlines next year with my 1.5 year old. He is flying on a full fare adult ticket not a discounted infant fare (usually 1/2 price). Both our tickets are points tickets (Perth through to Vancouver on Qantas then Alaska AL). Qantas does not require a booster seat for children in their own seat, even if they are under 2 (ie. infants) so I was not planning on bringing a car seat as I am travelling alone and will have enough to carry as it is. I read on the Alaska AL website that "children travelling on 50% infant ticket seats must use a booster/car seat approved for car and air travel". I'm wondering, given that my son will be travelling on a full fare adult ticket whether he needs the booster seat? What will they do if I don't have one, not let us on the flight? Or, shall I just lie and say he's 2 - or just board the flight with him in his own seat w/out booster and they will assume is is two and not longer an infant and therefore no booster required.

Answer
My 6-year-old has now flown on 242 flights and my 2-year-old on 40 flights. Mostly on Alaska Airlines so I have a bit of experience with this.

As a lap baby (unpaid), you definitely don't need a car seat. Some airlines like Northwest are real pricks about not allowing you to use one even on a flight with lots of empty seats. Whereas Alaska is one of the most baby-friendly airlines we've used and will let you use an empty seat for a car seat even though you paid nothing. I'll reserve a window-aisle combo (leaving an empty middle seat) towards the back of the plane to increase the chance of getting a free empty seat. IF someone does buy the seat between, they ALWAYS want to get out from between mother-child or mother-father passing a baby back and forth.

Without a carseat, you will need to have them in your lap for take-off and landing. They might want you to pick them up during possible turbulance as well. What you propose is no different than the unpaid lap baby who has an empty seat next to them. I can't imagine the flight attendents caring except during take-off and landing and then, (despite the physics involved), Mom's arms suffice. (or a car seat)

But I would reconsider your plan. Again, I've done this A LOT, and we try hard to BRING the car seat, not leave it or check it. Of course the car seat is safest in a crash, but Quantas has never had a crash and Alaska only loses planes about once every 20 years. More importantly, a child can sleep in a car seat much easier because it is sloped and their head is suported on both sides. And your arms will get TIRED of holding him for 18 hours of flight time. And if he gets into a total screaming, kicking fit about being overtired, jet-lagged, etc, you can strap him and pop in a pacificer. For some kids, being secured down helps at times. Sure, it is one more thing to schlepp through the airport, but you could always use a rental cart for $3 or call for one of those electric carts the old folks use. At 1.5 years old, I'd bring a Baby Bjorn front carrier so you can have him on your chest and leave your two hands free. One for the car seat and one to present tickets, passports, etc.

For your carry-on, use a backpack/rucksack. Baby in front, backpack behind, car seat on one arm, one hand free. I've gone through many airports and countries that way. So has my wife. Yeah, it is easier with two adults, but doable as one.

Try hard to save nursing or a bottle for climb-out and, less so, descent. The swallowing helps clear his ear pressure.

Theoretically, they can ask to see a US FAA approval sticker for airplane use on the carseat (they all have it), but any nation's approval ought to fly. And Alaska doesn't check all that often.

You'll need a car seat to drive with him in Alaska until he is 4 years or 40 pounds. And while airplanes rarely hit moose, cars and taxis do.

can you turn a backpack into a child carrier?

ummhidaya

dont think wrong. i mean like is there a way you can create a baby carrier from your backpack. i have seen them new in stores they have a baby seat but it looks like a normal backpack from the rear angle. since they are over $100 is it possible to make your own? i have a toddler and a infant that will be traveling and that would be prefect. if it is possible anyone know how to do it?>

Answer
i wouldn't do it.. those are safety tested many times before they would ever put a baby in it.. and if you make your own there can be many many safety risks.. so my opinion.. if you want that type of thing fork out the money for it.. but don't endanger your child just because you can't afford that one.. there are others out there that are cheaper.. good luck and please don't make your own for your baby's safety!

I see the carriers they make to do this but I never see anyone use them. I figure people have more than one kid so it would not be feasable.

I just wondered if I'm the only person consideing this.

Answer
I use a backpack carrier when hiking, I don't jog (since I was a teen *lol*, I was a long distance runner on the track team *lol*)

If the baby can sit well without support then any backpack carrier will do. If they aren't that developed then you need to take special care, generally you need to use a soft carrier (like a wrap) and swaddle the baby. Because of the stress it causes the hips its not recommended to use a swaddle board anymore.

PS Oi people using a proper baby carrier is incredibly comfortable for mom and baby, it does not stress mom's back. You can *easily* wear up to 20-30% of your bodyweight which for a 150lbs woman is 30-45lbs which is about a 2-4 year old.

And in case you haven't noticed babies like being bounced. Ever heard of the "colic drop", then there's all those bouncers and jumpers on the market. Daddy throwing the baby into the air, etc. I know lots of moms that end up on their yoga ball bouncing up and down vigorously to soothe a tiny baby, if jogging is your thing than go for it, its not like baby won't tell you if they don't enjoy it.

the fine line between saftey and learning life experience?

I am not a parent yet, but my husband and I were discussing how we would raise our kids. Both my husband and I were sheltered as children and the first bit of freedom we got, we went crazy with it. We were wondering how parents felt about allowing their children to do things on their own.

What is the correct age to have "the talk" with a child?
What is the correct age to put your daughter on birth control?
What is the correct age to discuss drugs and alcohol with a child?
What is the correct age to allow your child to roam the mall with their friends while you are also at the mall?
What is the correct age to allow your child to go to the mall by themselves?
Would you hack/ask for the passwords for your child's email, facebook, etc?
How would you enforce curfew?
Would you drive by the place that your child is supposed to be at to make sure they were there?
Would you install a tracking system in your child's car or cell phone?
Would you search your child's backpack, purse, room, etc?

How would you distinguish the line between being overprotective and keeping your child safe?

I know that a lot of this would depend on the maturity of the child, but any thoughts would be appreciated. Feel free to add any other scenarios as desired. Thanks in advance :)

Answer
My husband and I talked about this before having children as well, so we came up with this.

1. Ongoing. Babies have never come from the 'stork' but from a mommy and daddy with our kids. By 8, mom will talk to daughter, dad with son, about some of the more details. By 14, all contraceptives will be covered.

2. The pill? Never. From a family who has higher heart-disease rates, and the pill has a warning saying it makes things worse, not to mention a lot of the other side-effects to the pill, I don't plan on ever putting my daughter on the pill. Not to mention how it's poisoning the water supply of the world. Now if you mean condoms, my kids will be taught how and where they can buy them and I'll make sure if they ever need to earn $5 to buy them I'll have chores sitting aside. But we don't plan on letting them date seriously until they're 18, so it would be a mixed message to make them available before then. We will show them where our condom drawer is and if they ever had to get one we wouldn't care if one disappeared.

3. Ongoing. Certainly before school age. By 15 I want them to know 99% of it in detail.

4. Depends on their trustworthiness. If they will meet at 5pm without fail, then I wouldn't worry about it from about 10 up.

5. Again, depends on their trustworthiness, but I'd say about 14-16. 14 is when I'd let them go to dances, so it makes sense that I'd let them go to the mall with friends without me there about then. By themselves entirely, about the time I'd be willing to allow them to drive, or about 16.

6. Depends on the age. Until about 14-16 I plan to make a family account that we all use. Then about 14 or so (depending on the child) then they can have their own, but we have their passwords. About 16, if they haven't done anything, their own passwords, but if they're caught in something then that can regress to family-account again, or to us looking again. The screen-shot security program won't ever be removed.

7. We'll see when it comes to that. I mean, with one kid it could be just telling them they're grounded is enough. With another I might have to go and find them and embarrass them/bring them home and then they'd never break. I would never lock them out though. My mom told my dad once "If we lock him out, where do you think he'll go? The streets aren't safe, and I don't want him sleeping at his girlfriend's house... better home late than not at all." So yeah, they would never be locked out.

8. Yes. I would also call, or talk to the parents that should be there.

9. It will be a family cell phone for a LONG LONG time. So yeah. More to help me find it. As far as the car, again yeah, because it's not their car but the family car and if it got stolen or if I got in an accident or something then I'd want a way to find me. When they are a new driver, I might even install a 'black box' device that would tell me how fast it was going. They would KNOW all these things are there though, because I think knowing you're being watched is a great deterrent.

10. If I felt like there was reason to. If they have drugs in the house, I'm the one who could get in trouble. However, if I found condoms, they wouldn't be in trouble. Just illegal things, y'know? I mean, coupled with this should be "what would you do if you found porn, drugs, alcohol, condoms, etc..." I actually hope to volunteer to train a drug-search dog (I've wanted to for a long time, and I'd love to work with a hound) by the time they're teens. So there's a chance that I'd plant drugs in their room and have the dog practice. :P With their permission of course.

11. This is a very fuzzy line. My plan is to get them to 18 free. No drug-alcohol-sex addictions. No relationships so serious that it will make them choose something they may regret. No children. To one person, it's very overprotective to say no porn in the house, but as someone who has seen people deal with that addiction and seen it mess up their entire lives... to me it's negligent to not care about it.

I say I want them free at 18. Free to go to the school of their choice (which means good grades.) Free to make the choices they want as far as career. Free from things tying them down or forcing them on paths that they shouldn't be forced onto. This means restrictions now until they are old enough to make those decisions, and then increasing freedom to teach them how to handle themselves, but until 18 I would feel strongly responsible if they did something that would limit their lives 10 years down the road. Until 18, I do feel like it's my watch, and I have to take responsibility and make sure they don't make those decisions and choices. That would be overprotective by some. To me... it's being a good parent.

If I'm going to their school when they're 20 and yelling at their professors and overseeing their choice of roommate, THAT is overprotective.

The best food/things you can buy in USA?

Penny

My dad is going to USA and I really want some stuff from there since I love it and all the things you can buy in the States but not here in my country. What's the best stuff? Like, food, candy and things...Thanks! :)

Answer
It depends but I see that people from China will buy dozens of vitamins supplements, electronic stuff from GPS navigation system to cell phones, hardware and software etc But in general, people outside USA, will buy chocolate, cookies, preserves like jams, baby stuff from strollers to baby clothes, baby playstuff, children toys (not made in china though) tennis shoes, jeans, designers t-shirts,backpacks for teenagers, designers handbags, cosmetics from lotion to wrinkle/aging products for wife and briefs, boxer shorts, odor free socks, etc for husbands. One or two older relatives may want doritos, sun chips , mixed nuts etc. I know because whenever I go back, these are some of the stuff in my shopping list.

How do you carry your baby when you go out?

When you go out with your baby, what do you use to carry him or her around? I'm just wondering which items I should get before my little one is born, so I thought I'd ask all of the moms & dads - which item(s) do you use the most when you go out? and why do you prefer to carry them that way?

For example:
Stroller
Carseat carrier
Sling
Hold in arms
Backpack carrier
Front carrier (ex. Snugli)
other?

Answer
I agree with the car seat in stroller. The reason I like this, is purely CONVENIENCE! When you use this method, your baby is already in the car seat in the car, you simply unbuckle the car seat from it's position, press the carrier's release button, and wah-lah the car seat is free to go with you. Next, your husband pulls the stroller around and the carseat clicks right into place, than the car seat and stroller both have a canopy that connects, so baby is better protected from wind, rain, and loud noises. You can stroller baby around which is great, because trust me, baby's get heavy overtime and tired arms make for tired moms. The stroller makes for a smooth ride, and you can use the under carriage to store baby's items, diapers, spit-up rags, extra bottles or whatever, plus they usually come equipped with a cup holder which is perfect to hold a drink of your choice while you are moving around the store.

The super positive points:

If baby is sleeping, you don't have to wake the baby at all when you leave him/her in the carseat, you don't have to worry about anyone bumping into baby on accident, because they were not paying attention to your precious bundle you were carrying in your arms.

If you are in a grocery store, and don't need a stroller, the car seat carrier should just click right into the cart, and again, you won't have to wake baby up, or worry about how dirty the pre-provided baby carrier that comes with some shopping cart might be.

How to travel with newborn internationally?

I would like to travel soon with my 7 week old baby to Canada so he can see his grandparents. This will be a 22 hr flight via airplane! How soon can I travel and how I carry him with me conveniently? car seat, stroller what kind, backpack carrier? Anyone tried travelling w a newborn- can u give me tips

Answer
Oh wow i will be travelling from Canada hopefully within a week so her grandparents can see her and that will 22 hours of flight too but the difference is she will 4 months actually i wanted to go since she was 1 month but passport took some time. well the advices i got and after searching on different websites i came to know that:
When you get your tickets just ask them if there is anyway they can give you the seat where you can hook a bassinet up for the baby.
Take lots of diapers, pacifier, wipes, 2 to 3 change of cloths,
Make sure you take a soft blanket of your lill one.
Please don't drug the baby with Benadryl it can create more problem for you because sometimes babies get cranky.
Just make sure that u are feeding the kid (either bottle or breast feed) at the time of take off and landing so that he/she isn't cranky due to air pressure.
Btw dont worry your baby will be sleeping most of the time :)
Good luck!

Would I still need a stroller for a 2 1/2? What double stroller would you recommend? I usually just walk with my 2 year old but I was thinking if I was shopping alone or running errands with both of them, I want to have the option of putting them in a stroller for safety reasons, specially when it's crowded. Thanks.

Answer
I am a fan of the "Sit and Stand" type strollers. Check these ones out:

Especially at 2 1/2 years old, most likely your older child would not want to be confined to a stroller all the time. This worked very well for my children who were about 2 1/2 to 3 years apart. They do have these "Leashes" which I was never a fan of, because it kind of makes it seem like the children are being treated like animals. My 3rd child was a "Wanderer" though (Found out later he has Autism) so we did use one for a few months. Here are some examples of more discrete ones: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Goldbug-2-in-1-Monkey-Child-Safety-Harness/4532497

Two toddlers, one adult on an airplane, what to take?

Cindy

I'm leaving tomorrow to take my kids to see my parents. The flight will be 6 hours long. What are the must-haves of flying with toddlers (1 and 2 years old). One will be on my lap. Please help. This is not as easy task!

Answer
Sippy cups and bottles to help with the ear popping, drinking during lift off and landing can help with the discomfort. Also, make sure you don't overpack for your carryon, you are most likely going to have to carry enough without adding extra bulk and weight. Bring their favorite loveys, and either a portable dvd player or quiet toys that they really enjoy. Brought cars for my two year old when we flew with him. The worst part was hauling his car seat in and off of our three different planes. (was holding his little bro at the time too) Bring lots of snacks, as waiting can seem indefinate to little ones. Plus airport food is pricey! A small umbrella stroller will serve you well in the airport. They will even check it at the gate for you and have it ready when you land. Bring a sling or frontpack for the baby, you will be holding him/her alot and it will help. Make sure you know how to use it though, i had to show the girl behind me how to use hers mid-flight. Also, anything that usually calms your child is a good idea. You can try buying the two year old their own mini backpack so that he/she can carry their own toys or snacks. This will lighten your load and might encourage them to take that 'helper' role you are gonna need. Pack as lightly as you can, only what you would for a day spent at the mall for example, as you are going to have to lug all of it down the narrow airplane aisle carrying one and holding the others hand. Try to arrange for family boarding. I know southwest airlines does it, to give moms with small kids a chance to settle in before the plane fills up. You can always call the airline and ask how that works. Don't worry, most of the kids i have seen on planes sleep right through. The roar of the engines seem to lull them to sleep. (one note though, if your airline has open seating, make sure you notify the person sitting in front of you that you have a small child with you, and if they won't be comfortable having a child near them, if they would please relocate, the gentleman in front of my child asked me to move me and my two children, one of whom was in a carseat, in mid-flight because my sons kicking his own seat was bothering him. obviously i refused and informed him that it simply wasn't possible for the remaining halfhour of our flight, =) )

EDIT: i would also suggest bringing a leash for the two year old. I know some people find it barbaric, but you can find one at walmart that is elmo and bright red, and all you have to use is the actual tether part, it loops around their wrist. I found mine to be the most useful thing i packed in my diaper bag full of junk. (the leash comes with a full body harness like most, but i usually just use the wrist tether)

Baby wearing mamas, do they make a carrier for babies over 25 lbs?

Q. My son has a snuggli infant carrier and the weight limit is 25 lbs. I really like wearing him and I would like to keep doing it, but he just hit 23 lbs.

So, do you have any recommendations?

Answer
My Moby Wrap goes to 35lbs, but now that he is about 25lbs he is really starting to get too heavy for it when I do anything other then carry him around the house.

We use an Ergo when we are out and about, though its not the most attractive looking carrier, it gets the job done. It works a lot like a hiking backpack, to distribute the weight.

I had to give up the front carrier when he was around 10lbs because it killed my shoulders.

Is ErgoBaby carrier a good choice for International travel with 12 months baby?

gv

I would be all by myself with DS to travel from India to US by Feb 2013. He's is not used to sit in stroller. Am also in a dilemma about the stroller option since am worried if I have to carry him just in case, then stroller will be an added weight.
thanks!

Answer
Yes.

Honestly I love my Ergo. We have 2 so that my husband can wear one and I can wear one, back when we only had 2 kids my daughter liked riding backpack style on Daddy during hikes, while I carried my son. It goes to 40lbs, front carry, side carry, and backpack carry, so it worked very well. I just had my third, and I'm looking forward to carrying her.

I don't know how old your child is, but with my kids I had considered getting a double-stroller when my second was born because she was just a little over 2 and wouldn't walk far, she always rode in the stroller. Instead I tried the Ergo thinking it would be a bit cheaper just for 6 months or so. Instead I used the Ergo up until the week I found out I was pregnant. After about a year old my son wanted to ride in the stroller, so my daughter would walk and if she got tired I'd put her on my back and she could then ride home. It gave her the freedom to walk, but also be able to ride if she got tired, and she LOVED being able to talk right into my ear rather than me being behind her pushing the stroller which made for great nature walks.

Since the Ergo was lightweight, easy to pack, all fabric so it is compact... we took it EVERYWHERE. The stroller was alright, but the Ergo was simpler and easier to bring. If I had one child, I definitely would skip the stroller and just use an Ergo, especially on trips.

Something else to keep in mind, every time I took a stroller on an airplane it was broken. The Ergo, on the other hand, I packed in our carry-on and had right there as soon as I needed it.
